Winding Plotline.......2007-04-05

Several generations of families are thrown into various tragedies as the plot twists and turns to offer many surprises.

Could this be In Flames' best CD?.......2006-10-08

For me, I think this one Whoracle and Jester Race are all tied for the best. All their albums from Lunar Strain to Come Clarity are amazing to me but this one really stands out to me.

Other than Clayman, this is probably Anders' best output in my opinion. The first glimpse at clean vocals can be found on Ordinary Story and a little bit on Coerced Coexistence.

But what really makes this album shine is the work put out by Jesper and Bjorn. Their harmonised guitar work is untouchable. This is very relative on Embody the Invisible and The New World which are the best songs as far as guitars goes, 2nd and 3rd to Behind Space '99.

Stand out tracks:

Embody the Invisible: Fast song, great opener.

Scorn: One of my all time favorite from In Flames. Similar to Embody the Invisible.

Coerced Coexistence: Fast yet slows down in the chorus for a very catchy song.

Behind Space '99: My favorite song of all time. Better than the original and perfect in every sense of the word.

This album to me is perfect and cant possibly be rated any lower than 5 stars.

Great album....but whats with the 80's cheese?.......2006-09-04

The one thing that I just cannot understand about In Flames style, is that they love to use cheesy 1980's guitar riffs for their main riff in almost all of their songs, making them literally un-bearable for me to listen to them. Seriously, some of their riffs sound like they came straight from the theme songs from Japanese Anime cartoons. C-H-E-E-S-Y!
One of the main things that bothers me with In Flames style, is that there really is not groove or "soul" too it. I know that Melodic Death isn't really supposed to have "soul" to it, but c'mon! Expand and spiral out. Bands should be trying new things, not sticking to the same style for every release. Having grooves and "soul" really adds to the experience, rather than just making music with the hopes of blowing speakers out and bashing the listeners face in.

Another thing that I have noticed about In Flames style on most of their discography, is that they use the same song structure over and over. While it is a great formula, the "wear and tear" really shows when you have heard the same sounding riff on six of their albums. Colony is their 1999 release, and its a decent one.
The guitar work, which is hailed as some of the best in the genre, is self-absorbed and pretentious at times, but nontheless awesome. Bass guitar is almost non-existant though, which is rediculous. The drumming follows similar patterns througout the whole album and really doesn't get creative beyond what has already been done in Melodic Death Metal.

Colony does feature some amazing songs that I really, really like. "Ordinary Story", which is a very melodic song sans all the cheese from the 1980's. I really like the title track "Colony", the riffs are great. "Zombie Inc" is a decent song, "Pallar Anders Visa" is a beautiful, beautiful short acoustic guitar tune, "Coerced Coexistence" has a strange chorus that is almost sung, with some decent guitar work. "Resin" is completely un-listenable to me. The 1980's cheesy guitar kills it. "Behind Space 99" is actually a song off of "Lunar Strain" I believe. They re-do it, and it sounds really good. "Insipid 2000" is a great song as well, with an interesting break in the song at 00.59 seconds into the song. "New World" is a great closing song, that almost borders on the cheese factor.

Overall, "Colony" is a decent release that, while not being a must have for the regular metal-head, is a nice listen. All too often I hear people hailing In Flames as the Gods of Melodic Death Metal. Sure, they were one of the originating bands of the genre, but they for dang sure do not represent all there is to offer in the genre.

Another good disk from the masters of Gothenburg.......2006-05-04

Colony for the most part still sounds like its predicessors. But on this cd you can definitely hear the changes they have in here which they will start sounding like. This cd, especially the overly sick Clayman which is to follow this release, set the stage for their next three cds that foolow Clayman: Reroute to Remain, Soundtrack to Your Escape, and Come Clarity. For the most part, this a good cd that continues with the traditional gothenburg sound they started with in Lunar Strain. This is a worthy editon to your In Flames collection, my freinds, and also to your metal libray. I also like the cover art for this album as I do for the Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance and Whoracle.

I agree the reviewer two reviews below. How anyone could rate this below 5 stars I have no idea. This album comes close to being 'perfect'. Everything is perfectly well crafted:

1. The vocals are superb. Although Anders has let us down on the later In Flames album (he's practically screaming now), in Colony, the death growls are low, sustained and best of all - coherent. As much as I detest emo screaming, I also don't like vocals so messy, that even if you read the lyrics it still sounds like "ASGFJYURFH!" But these vocals are great
2. The drumming: excellent use of blast beats. Not overdone, not underdone, perfectly heavy without being annoyingly aggressive.
3. The bass: extremely deep and well suited to the music. Metal doesn't sound good without perfect bass!
4. Guitars: ah, the usual interweaving Gothenburg dual guitar sound. Absolutely wonderful with the overlay of harmonics and melody. There are lots of amazing solos in the songs. Check out Behind Space and The New World to see what I mean
5. Other instruments like pianos and strings are used, so the songs never get boring and are well varied. Chck out the cool use of pianos in Ordinary Strong, and the chimes in Colony.
6. Well structured songs. Not the usual verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus routine. Instead you never know to expect.
7. This is serious no-nonsense metal. Not some mediocre trashy metalcore music. Proper heavy melodic death.
8. The song Embody The Invisible is another good reason to buy this album. It's so brilliant, and the best song in the album

So buy this album and gasp at its wonder

A Rock Group Scheduled to Appear at the Annual Spring Concert of St Patrick's High School in Chicago Called in at the Last Moment and Said They Couldn't Appear Due to Illness. Pat Mcbride, Emcee of the Show and Senior at the School, Got Together with Three Other Seniors and Formed a Group to Fill In. They Did Three Beatles Numbers that Night and the Response was So Good They Decided to Become a Regular Group. They Called Themselves the Patsmen but Soon Tired of that Name and Searched for a New One. They Decided on 'the New Colony' Since it was in the Middle of the First Big British Musical Invasion and They Wanted to Be Known as a Strictly American Group. By the Time the Group Had Grown to Six-hence, the New Colony Six, which Went on to Become One of Chicago's Most Popular Groups and Eventually Spread Across the Nation.

Fond Memories Of The New Colony Six!.......2006-03-09

For you old timers (myself included) that remember & liked The New Colony Six; you have got to hear these ballads again! Hands down; This is one of the best Bands that I remember; and yet forgot about; until I happened to stumble upon their (out of print) Best Of; Colonized CD here at Amazon. What a pleasant surprise for me! Needless to say; I done more searching looking for my favorite New Colony Six songs on other compilations that was still in print and found their 2 most popular Ballads was on Dick Bartley Presents Classic Oldies 1965-1969 being, I will Always Think About You, and, Things I'd like To Say, however purchasing that CD only left me wanting more of their good songs. I knew there was more because I vaguely remember a few of them but didn't remember the titles and it has been so long; the available 30 second song samples wasn't helping me at all. Well..... My search stopped right here with this Treat Her Groovy Disc that Amazon now has. The titles of 2 of those songs are, Barbara; I Love You, and, Blue Eyes, and, Blue Eyes, isn't even on the Colonized CD. There are also 3 others here that I remember and I think they are every bit as beautiful as the Band's 2 most popular Ballads (which are also here) being, I Want You To Know, I Could Never Lie To You, &, Can't You See Me Cry. The remainder of the songs don't appeal to me much and that is why I only gave this Disc 4 stars however the Ballads more than justify purchasing this CD.
This Disc is their 2 Mercury Records Studio Albums, Revelations, &, Attacking A Straw man, from 1968 & 1969 on 1 Disc and for roughly ¼ of the price of the Colonized CD; and this is what I was looking for. This Disc and their, At The Rivers Edge, Disc will get you 15 of the 20 Colonized songs anyway; for roughly ½ the price. The sound quality on this CD is as beautiful as the Ballads. If you like this band; you can't go wrong here. I cannot believe I completely forgot about them but then.....It was a long time ago!
Final Note; I'm only kidding about old timers only. Everyone needs to hear the Ballads I have mentioned above! Simply put......They are Gorgeous!

Great music reminiscent of the Association.......2006-02-21

Thank God for Satellite radio! I had no idea who did "Things I'd Like To Say" until I caught it on XM and it was The New Colony Six! I was aware of their garage rock sound but not the ballad sounds that would make you think of the Association or Gary Puckett. Better than Puckett, on par with the best Association music and were better at making whole albums as evidence here. If it had more cuts like "Sun Within You" and "Come Give your Love To Me" and dropped the last two cuts, I would have given it 5 stars. Save yourself some bucks and skip the "Colonized" Rhino collection. Far too expensive. Buy this along with the insanely excellent "At the River's Edge" (5 stars!) and you will have most of "Colonized" for half the price. One disc will have the garage and the other will be the lighter sunshiny music. A logical move in 1968 for a garage band considering the immense popularity of Puckett, the Association, the Bee Gees,etc. If you are into this stuff don't hesitate.

New colony six - 2 albums in 1.......2005-12-07

Being from chicago, the new colony six where the second most popular local bang in the late 60's only the buckinghams got more national attention.

This CD combines their last 2 albums on Mecury Records "revelations" and "attacking a straw man" . Most people will know the hits from the first album "i will always think about you" and their biggest national hit " things i'd like to say". its good clean pop sound, happy and carefree no anti war messages here, just fun and toe tapping/sing along songs......hope you like as much as i did when i bought the 8-track tapes in '68 and '69!

Hmm.........2005-01-06

I've been a huge fan of the SF series since the age of 7. I'm proud to say that Capcom has done a great job on SF despite how confusing and chopy the sl is. Anyway. SF 3 has some pretty good music that you can jam to, however, you should spend the extra couple of bucks on the import version, just because the tracks are longer, and you get another CD that features the voice overs and other hits from the game. I would like to have a CD where the thrid cuts to each song are mixed in! Like Elena's 'Beats In My Head' That would really make my day, Capcom!

I'd recommend spending a little more for the Japanese import version. Some of the songs are longer and it comes with bonus CD with new songs and extended tracks. You can find it at places like animenation.com

Okay, but only for parties........2002-07-27

This is not the kind of soundtrack one can listen to regularly and get familiar with. I'd say it's best to play at a party because it makes for perfect background music to chatting and drinking and it's neo-techno feel is suitably apt.

Mars Colony also have a soundtrack CD available for Streets Of Rage 2, which is also more thematic. The music on this CD is rather good, with great beats and all but it just seems in between a soundtrack CD and a regular 'trance' CD. Some of the tracks are 'Tribal Dance' mixes and I can't imagine most of the music being out-of-place in a typical nightclub.

So if you can find it, get a copy. It's also great for budding DJs to have fun with in mixing and editing.

Awesome soundtrack! Except.............2002-04-05

First of all, I want to say recommend this to all the Street Fighter fans out there. Most of the time, I play the game just to hear the music. Among my favorites are "Third Strike"- the game's theme, "Let's Get it On Now"-just before battle, and "Movin' On"-staff roll. My only beef about this soundtrack is that the full version these three songs are not on it. Other than that, awesome soundtrack.

Please Capcom, Make another!.......2001-03-30

If you have any intention to buy a video game soundtrack, I believe that this is your album of choice. Although the tracks are on the short side, they are ones that will touch you in a way that many other recordings fail to achieve. Trust me, this is the best I've heard from Capcom and if this is any sign, I'll be back to get the next one.

Ever Beside Me in My Heart.......2007-03-11

When "I Confess" boomed over WLS radio in Chicago, its sound was distinctive from most of the radio. It had a roughness and unpolished feel, but still was addictive with the guitar peeling out of the speakers, launching the local band. The songs on "At the River's Edge" are short, clocking around 2 & 1/2 minutes. Most of the band's first album "Breakthrough" that shares a cover similarity with this release are on this disc, but not all. There is a sweetness about the churning guitar sound on "Don't You Think It's Time You Stopped Your Cryin'" and the chugging rhythms of "Last Nite." "I And You" still has a haunting quality with the weeping organ, "We now are together, never again shall we part, we'll let nothing come between us, you are ever beside me in my heart." "I Lie Awake" has a great build and the classic churning guitars, making such a distinctive sound. "The Time of Year Is Sunset" offers dreamy harmonies that presage some of the Mercury sides the 6 would lay down several albums later. One of my favorite early Colony tracks is the pounding "Cadillac" that sounds part Indian drum chant, part garage rock, "I looked in the trunk but there wasn't no jack; I think I'll take this car right back." "Sunshine" that was the flip side of the 45 r.p.m. record of "Cadillac" wisps with great Colony harmonies. "I Love You So Much" is a great track with its distinctive melody, "Every night I hope & pray your sweet love will come my way, and now you're here, I've felt your touch, I love you so much." "You're Gonna Be Mine" has a distinctive sound that puts a smile on your face while it sets your toe tapping, "I never thought that I'd ever find any girl who'd drive me out of my mind." From their "Colonization" LP, the 6 do a delightful version of the John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful) penned tune with great high airy vocals and ripping lead guitar. With 22 tracks, "At the River's Edge" is an excellent release to review the early work of this great 60's Chicago band. Enjoy!

I CONFESS that this is a great album.......2000-09-26

This excellent album is BETTER than the Colonized Greatest Hits album because New Colony Six's early singles were much more consistent than their later song. I definitely recommend this 4 star album.

Awesome CD!.......2006-08-28

I loved these guys since the first time I heard them in 2002. This album has great sounds to it. If you like Covenant; another great synthpop band from Sweden, you'll love these guys, too. A must have for anybody who likes Colony 5 already.

Superb Synth-based Album Everyone Should Get !.......2002-12-01

This has got to be the coolest new finding amongst plenty of underground electronic/synthpop movements outhere. "Lifeline" presents us with well-crafted electronic tunes that should make you jump out of your seat & dance all night long.

Musically, Colony 5 sounds very similar to De/Vision; or if you're not familiar with De/Vision, you should know what Depeche Mode sounds like. Yes, underground synth-based bands got lots of their influence from mainstream electronic groups such as: Depeche Mode, Cause & Effect, Camouflage,etc.....

not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

If you liked their other albums..........2006-08-28

..this will be a great buy as well. I heard of Colony 5 in 2002 when I listened to their single: Colony 5. I really enjoyed it, but forgot about them for a few years, until I rediscovered them. They are a great band if you like synthpop. They have changed their style since their first album; Lifeline, but it still has the same great sound that they had back then.

If you like Covenant, you'll like these guys, too.

Pretty decent.......2006-02-08

I got turned on to this by a DJ friend through the song "A New World Arise" which is worth the price of the CD alone. I also enjoy "Plastic World" and "Fusion" (and another song which I forget the name of). The rest of the album tends to sound the same like any other 3rd/4th tier synth-pop band. Overall, it's like a lighter, less filling version of Covenant (my favorite band of the genre). This CD is my "fix" between their albums.

Simply a masterpiece.......2005-11-15

We're almost at the end of 2005 but this will be a year we won't forget when we refer to the swedish band Colony 5. At the beginning of this year we saw the release of "Fixed", the third full album from this band, a record full of energy, good hooks and great futurepop vibe. The band has matured into a blend of the best futurepop sound on the planet with touches of synthpop, great vocals and fine programming. The songs are simply amazing and varies from the melancholic "Fallen Star" to the club friendly super-hit "Plastic World" and the anthem-like "A new world arise".
This masterpiece titled "Fixed" is the best release from this band as for now, but don't be surprised if their next record will be far superior to this as this band goes better and better with time. This album is a must for real synthpop and futurepop fans.

People's Colony No. 1 is a pan-cultural ocean of fat, clubby beats, dub, Asian and Middle Eastern dissonance, and the rhythmic wail of Sufi tradition. Resultantly, this collaborative effort--between Trans-Global Underground's Neil Sparkes and Count Dubulah (here under the moniker Temple of Sound) and Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali, nephews of the world's finest and best-loved Qawwali singer, the late Nusrat--is a bewitching blend of dance-floor devotional music. Guest player Jah Wobble lays down the bones with his mighty bass, and Cuban violinist Omar Puente bows Arabic style. Tablas and stellar percussion fill layer upon layer while the Rizwan-Muazzam vocals burn with the ecstatic fervor of young men with a heavy torch. Missing the through-line warmth that'd put this release over the top, People's Colony No. 1 is an uneven though consistently intriguing offering. The singing nephews could use an expanded role throughout, as on the standout opening cut, "The Jewelled Heart." And the band, while always good, is its most shimmering version of gorgeous on the first and last compositions, both of which are, not coincidentally, co-written with Wobble. --Paige La Grone

rythmic goodness.......2004-01-25

I bought this cd not having previously heard anything by its artists. However after listening to it once, I was hooked. The songs have hard-but-flowing beats, hauntingly beautiful vocals, and showcase a variety of different instruments ranging from the amazing tablas to sweet chimes to heavily distorted, rumbling bass. These provide the cd with a modern, dancey sound while still maintaining traditional Indian and East Asian melodies. The songs also lay down crisp details and smooth, circular backgrounds, giving the album a nicely balanced feel...almost like the genres were just waiting to be blended into one. The only drawback? A few of the songs (The Palace at 4 AM and Tears of Light) gave me the feeling they were trying to lead up to something, but couldn't quite reach whatever that something was....other than that this cd has earned itself a high mark. It has the ability to get you up and grooving, even before the beat truly kicks in!

Decent, but not great........2001-09-06

"People's Colony No. 1" is a collaboration that works only about half of the time. The vocals by Rizwan and Muazzam and their backing group are nothing less than superb, but Temple of Sound does an inconsistent job of matching the Pakistani group's power. The formula works best on tracks like "Solar East" and "Tears of Light," with its spooky keyboard sounds and cool tabla playing. The concept of fusing modern instruments with Qawwali singing can and does work (see uncle Nusrat's collaborations with Michael Brook), but here, the electronic backdrops don't effectively engage the more traditional musical elements - it's as if Temple of Sound is trying to ride on Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali's coattails. Still, there is enough interesting material on this album to warrant a few listens. Just be prepared for occasional lapses in musical maturity from the Temple of Sound side of the equation. (One member of TOS actually thinks that referring to himself as "Count Dubulah" is a good idea - need I say more?)

Head-on crash 'tween Realworld and Transglobal Underground.......2001-07-18

I bought this CD not knowing what to expect. I had liked TGUs work in the past, and Temple of Sound is essentially half of TGU. I was unfamiliar with the Sufi singing of the Qawwali, but decided to take a chance.

I'm overjoyed that I did. This CD is excellent.

It's more "world beat" than Transglobal Underground, but there is a strong basis in electronics to most of the songs as well. It's certainly not a thumping techno-CD to throw on at parties, but there is a definite electronic groove and vibe to many of the songs. Dub influences are pretty apparent, and most obvious on the opening track. The singing is actually quite haunting with a mix of droning lower parts and stacatto top end parts. Taken together, the mix of the vocals with the traditional insturments and the electronics makes a very "thick" mix with lots of depth to the sound.

The album also flows together beautifully. While each song is good in its own right, the album feels very coherent and interlocked when listened to in one sitting.

I highly reccomend this album. It sits on the fence between "traditional" world music and global techno, but really benefits from toeing the line, rather than hurting from it. I've tried to just put this on as background music while working, but there are enough great songs ('wheel of heaven' being my favorite) that make me stop whatever i'm doing and just *listen* with my eyes closed. If that's not a good reccomendation, I don't know what is.

Finally!!!.......2001-09-10

Hate Dept finally did all its fans a huge favor by releasing a double disc set with hard to find material on it. Since almost all of their albums are now out of print and extremely rare, this definitely leads me to salvation. Normally, I hate live industrial, but the live tracks are really good on this cd. Seibold asks the fans in a live song: "Are you guys tired?...ugh, SHUT UP." The reason why I like HD is that they kind of have this whole act of hating their fans. They really don't though...they're really nice guys in fact.
The whole thing with electronic music for me is that it is accompanied by guitars and this is exactly what I was looking for. This album has really tight and concise riffs and really deep beats. It's just damn good. It's rare to still find electronic/industrial music fused so well with guitars. I find that a lot of today's electronic music is really watered down...do yourself a favor and get this cd.
