The reviewers who complain of "naive" and "weak" orchestration should read the liner notes. The orchestrations are not Gottschalk's, mostly, but those of Richard Rosenberg, artistic director of the Hot Springs Music Festival. And while it may seem easy to blast Rosenberg, Gottschalk was no master of orchestration himself. I played in the Hot Springs Music Festival Orchestra this summer, including recording more Gottschalk (as well as Nazareth and Bares) for Naxos, and I promise that Gottschalk's treatment of Mehul's "Grande Chasse de Jeune Henri," which will soon be released on Naxos, will leave no doubt in your mind that Gottschalk was right to restrict most of his activity to the piano. (More proof that Gottschalk was indeed the the "Chopin of the Creoles")
At any rate, this series of recordings seems to me a worthwhile historical project. There is some really beautiful music on these discs, in addition to some music that really need never have been revived. In any case, the listener to this disc will find some enjoyment, little offense, and much food for thought about the development of American musical culture.

5 out of 5 stars Just plain fun.......2004-12-13

I'm not sure how other reviewers could have found this music weak and naive--too much Schönberg, maybe? Or maybe they were trying to delve its musical profundity, when in fact this music isn't profound and doesn't claim to be. It's just energetic, fun music from a composer who wasn't content to color within the Classical-era lines. If you can imagine "Creole Classical," in fact, that's a good description of this CD. Although the bulk of the album consists of rollicking showtunes (most of which feature the piano as the dominant instrument, since most of the songs are orchestral arrangements of piano pieces), there are some surprisingly tender, lyrical moments as well. The whole album is imbued with an intriguingly pre-Jazz flavor that combines with the classical structure to create some of the best moments in American music: catchy, energetic and always entertaining. For those moments when Beethoven (or Schönberg) is too much depth for one day, this CD is the perfect alternative... particularly at this price.

Every once in a while, I like to buy a CD of a composer I'm not familiar with (and with NAXOS's low prices, why not?). When I got home and listened to this one, once wasn't enough. I listened twice through. This CD is real fun!!

In his day, Gottschalk was called "the Chopin of Creoles." Most of his writing was for the piano and this CD is generally short piano pieces arranged for orchestra. The music mixes strong folk melodies and New Orleans Creole inspired syncopation with the European Classical tradition- the result being a distinctly american divertimenti.

The music as a whole is very motif oriented with a touch of variation and some interesting arrangement twists. While and orchestral CD, the piano gets a lot of attention, giving us some nice interplay between the two.

The only complaint I have is that the CD was recorded at a music festival where professional musicians are playing side by side with selected 'pre-professionals.' I'm not a snob and normally it wouldn't bother me, but Gottschalk's unusual syncopation tends to be unprofessionally slopppy at times. Fortunately, any mistakes are in the supporting insturments. No star shall be subtracted because NAXOS has done such a great job giving us a quality CD at a good price.

Upon listening to this CD I understand why Gottschalk is noted mainly for his piano compositions. I found the whole CD weak musically and the orchestration naïve. It seems as if these pieces are piano works that want to be orchestral compositions when they grow up.

I have several other CDs by this conductor, not sure of his credentials, who seems on a mission to champion the music of the unknown composers. While I applaud his work in bring the music of composers of color to the public's attention I must say that there are many more notable Black and Hispanic composers who deserve to have their music played before we go dipping into this well of musical obscurity.

I think that this conductor needs to ask himself something that many musicologist ask before wasting time on second rate composer: why is a composer's music not known in the first place?

this CD is one of the best in the "american classics" series i have heard. the playing is warm, playful and full of energy.

these delightful compositions for orchestra and piano seem almost timeless. again thanks to naxos for bringing this largely unknown composer's talent to a modern audience at a steal!

TAPES. BUT THIS ALBUM REMINDS ME OF A CORNY B-HORROR MOVIE WITH CHEESY

BODY PARTS..HE SOUNDS FAKE. YEAH THERE'S SOME DECENT TRACKS SUCH AS "THE

I have stated before in my other reviews that Goretexx isn't my favorite member of Non Phixion but I decided to check his CD out anyways and I have to say, I was right when I said he was garbadge.
Why? Well a majority of his lyrics come off as just uninspired and immature. Lets see, how to describe Gortexx... um... a less lyrical version of Necro comes to mind.

So to the consumer, if you purchase this cd consider the fact that the whole album is basicly Goretexx trying to be vulgar to the point it comes off as tasteless, cliche, and phoney. If you don't mind, and want to hear a few good beats and some tight guest appearances, then go ahead and cop it.

Truthfully, I hate to write a review responding to someone else's critique of an album so I will attempt an indirect route. I feel that this album is fantastic. Goretex rhymes on point from what may be described as a dusted perspective, and as always, Necro makes beats that fit perfectly with thier recipients vocal styles. I don't feel that any of the Non Phixion camp outshined any other on thier solo debuts, considering all were of a different dimension (hence the concept of solo albums) Goretex shines as a rapper in that he makes statements with what he says as much as what he does not say. I have been into rap for quite some time, and love death and heavy metal as well, and have no problem saying that I appreciate Goretex's flow, and subject matter as much as any other rapper I have heard. Furthermore, coming from the perspective of a metal fan, as well as a rap fan, I have no problem in saying that I feel Goretex, the way people claim to feel Nas, Rakim, or even Jay Z ( <--I said other people). It is rare to see a musician as obviously inspired, and blatantly original at the same time. I don't feel that breath control plays a role in the album seeing as how it is not live and the studio techniques are employed for effect and not lack of talent. Besides, it's not evident that cut in's are used to a non discerning ear. When people mention things like this, it is usually misconstrued as a production problem, something Necro's style is devoid of. The "posse cuts" are great and songs on here are written with a metal edge (Blessed are the Sick's drum fill) sometimes lacking a hook altogether. This may be a bit unusual to a rap fan's ear, but think of it as a lack of a blueprint, letting the song's actual words take precedent, instead of being a roadblock to the next chorus. There is a problem with the overall length of the disc in that there are instrumental interludes which are tough to sit thru when juxtaposed with the acutal "songs" on the disc (those being the beats with or without rhymes). I would have to say the album is dusty but digital, bringing the best of vintage records with slick production making for an oxymoronic pairing creating a faux retro beat scheme. The glaring eyesore has to be Mr. Hyde. Hailed as a semi successful gold glove boxer, Hyde must have taken too many punches to the head. His monosyllabic, cheesy flow sounds like he is an insane clown posse protege. Hyde is sufficient as a hype man, but serves no purpose other than occupying 16 bars of any song he rhymes on. It's sad that he got a whole album of Necro beats for "Barn of the Naked Dead", kind of like Group Home on "Living Proof" (No offense to Dap, but Malachi is awful). I could go on and on about how BAD, Hyde raps. I am not kidding when I say you or I could pick up a pen and pad and write comparable material on the first go round. You could hear one bar, pause the disc, and almost always guess the word he uses to rhyme in the next one. His punchlines are more like f@g slaps, his ad libs should be deleted. It's as if he conquers illiteracy only to write his rhymes, returning to his indifference to the written word immediately after he is finished. I mean, to rhyme next to rappers as technically proficient as the Psycho Logical camp and not notice it is a statement in itself. Hyde is only on one track, but his irritating flow leaves a stubborn sore which is easily reopened, besides, I am not going to review his drivel laden album in order to get my point across. I digress, this album is really good and if you like anything from Uncle Howie/Psycho Logical it will not fail to impress. It's like the site said, just look at the cover and you know this $hit is next level. Rap for Metalheads. If you see Hyde coming, do just that.

Necro did great production on this album. The beats are all awesome. Goretex is a pretty good rapper aswell, his voice is really angry sounding. He is pretty good lyrically aswell, like he talks about other stuff than violence, sex and drugs. This is a great album and i highly recommend it to any fan of death rap.

    Yes The Ultra Violence was great. Yes TUV is a classic. Yes TUV pleases fans and musicians alike. But, TAOD rules. Better production, better mix, better song writing, better vocals, louder guitars, better lyrics.
    Each song has a different feel and pace. My favorites-5 Steps Of Freedom, The Devil Incarnate, Spirit, Land Of Blood.

    All perfect songs. Fast, aggressive, and catchy.

    Weak points:
    The only weak points are the verses of The Devil Incarnate and Famine because they are a little too slow. Still good songs though.

    Bottom Line:
    Incredible comeback album and definitely their best to date! Any thrash fan will love this nearly perfect album.

    What a great comeback! Death Angel back with their original line-up and they have continued where they left off. All Death Angel fans and all fans of great metal will love this! What else can I say, if you like metal this is a must.

    This is a comeback CD for the Bay Area thrashers Death Angel that is a total masterpiece. Amazingly fast,tight,powerful riffs with great vocals and amazing drumming. If you are a thrash fan, this is a must have and will not dissapoint, go out and get it now, and if you can, also get Act III, Frolic Through The Park and Ultra-Violence, all of them are excellent, and are also available re-mastered in their box set. Death Angel Rules!!

    I've been a Death Angel fan since Ultra-Violence and this is one band that has never disappointed. The Art of Dying has only served to leave me wanting even more Death Angel and serving as a reminder of just how great that band truly was. These guys don't sell out like so many other bands from their era have done, they remain true to their music and past. I also reccomend picking up Archives & Artifacts box set if you can swing it!

    It was incredibly generous of DG to throw toegther these great performances--one of them legenday--in a bargain two-fer. The legendary performance, of course, is Richter's 1958 Pictures at an Exhibition performed in concert. The rights are owned by Philips, but I don't know if their latest remastering has been used here. The complaints about dreadful sonics are justified: the piano is far away and tinny, the Sofia audience coughs continuously--some of them are lucky to have left with their lungs intact--and there is a noisy exhaust fan in the foreground. It's a testimony to Richter's incandescent reading that it survives beyond all obstacles.

    Another high point is the orchestral reading of Pictures under Giulini with the CSO. This was a famous recording in its day, because Giulini took the thrice-familiar music seriously, a bit slower than usual, adding many individual touches. Maybe his approach becomes ponderous and too serious at times, but it's one of a kind, and the solo winds in the orchestra are a delight.

    Actually, I was most moved by Vishnievskaya's selection of songs, recorded in the Soviet Union with Igor Markevitch adding his superlative accompaniments--this is Mussorgsky singing of the highest order. But so is Fassbaender's Songs and Dances of Death, despite her lack of Slavic authenticity. Maazel bombs through Night on Bald Mountain with suitable thrills.

    In all, this Panorama two-fer can't be faulted. It's one of the very best in the seeries, and several of the choicest things on it are otherwise out of print.

    5 out of 5 stars A STRONG REBUTTLE to the "bad" reviews........2006-05-19

    155 minutes of music and one reviewer gives these CDs 1 star for couging here and there during 7 minutes of Richter's Pictures recital. Not continually mind you. I DON'T GET IT!
    A reviewer doesn't like vocal music..so 2 stars. I DON'T GET IT! Just because one does not like "classical" vocals, doesn't mean they stink.
    This is over 2 1/2 hours at single CD budget price. Geez...
    Giulini gives a superbly recorded THRILLING performance of Pictures that, in my humble opinion, is second only to Reiner's. Also with the CSO 15 years earlier.
    This 34+ minutes alone is worth the price of this collection.
    The excerpts from Boris Gudonov are considered one of the best performances in the catalog (Karajan/VPO). 29 minutes and a good way to determine if you want to purchase the complete opera 3 CD set for over $30+ bucks.
    Markevich/Vishnevskaya is considered to be the definitive version for the "6 songs".
    The Kovanshchina prelude (Dawn on The Moskva River) is one the most heart rending themes in the canon. Simply gorgeous 6 minute piece of music.
    I could go on and on.
    Sure there are a few "gaffs" on these CDs. Maazel brings in Bald Mountain in under 10 minutes. Whew!
    But hey...kudos to the orchestra for being able to play that well, that fast without stumbling over each other. Quite exhilerating acually.
    And Then there is Richter's famous/"infamous" Pictures. Yes the annoying cough and a not so sonic recording. But anyone looking for just this track should already have been aware of this problem. "Classisists" have been talking about this problem for 50+ years. Obviously it can't be fixed. But still several coughs in 30+ minutes just makes it sound as live a performance as it is.
    So let's recap...155 minutes of music with maybe parts of 15 minutes of minor problems for DISCOUNT bucks. Pretty good math I'd say. Equals 5 STARS where I come from.
    Overall, this is an excellent CD for those who want Mussorgsky's major orchestral output in one package at a bargain price.
    Top conductors, top orchestras, great performances and, except for Richter's Pictures, GREAT SONICS.
    If you want a truly magnificent solo piano Pictures try Pletnev's on Virgin Classics. It will blow you away. And you get the bonus of his own piano transcription of Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty which is even better.

    2 out of 5 stars Review for Richter's "Pictures" Only.......2006-04-24

    I was thrilled to find that Deutsche Grammophon has reissued Sviatoslav Richter's famous Sophia performance of "Pictures." I have owned it on tape, but have until now not had it on CD. I was surprised by previous reviews of this edition, since I thought that the explosive coughing had been toned down substantially. My tape broke years ago, so maybe my memory is off. But the re-engineering of this performace has been one of the most needed "retrofits" in the entire classical catalogue. The sound quality of this edition is certainly much better than the old Polydor record.

    I also will refrain from entering the "Is it the greatest Pictures ever?"-debate. It is my favorite. One sometimes hears critics dismiss the piano--thus Mussorgsky's--version as monochromatic. But Richter presents a much more percussive version than most others, which may be why some people don't care for it. (My dad played this piece with a more Romantic reading.) It's a matter of taste: I have never cared for the Ravel version, probably because the percussive aspect doesn't translate into orchestration.

    I almost never write music reviews, since I'd hate to convince people to plunk down good money on a CD that conforms to my taste but not theirs. BUT, if you have enjoyed this performace in the past . . .

    I give five stars to Richter recital, which amazes me still. I agree that his deliberate "clunkers" are distracting. But having listened to this performance for almost twenty years, it is the "correct" playing of Pictures that now jars me. If you love this performance, as I clearly do, you'll be happy to have this CD. Just don't Google the Hartmann pictures which inspired Mussorgsky. It's disillusioning, but they aren't very good!

    1 out of 5 stars A bad whooping cough in 1958 in Sofia, Bulgaria.......2006-04-17

    I was listening to the magnificient percussion and
    overall sound of this double release, from 2000, #469 169-2,
    when throughout the 1st CD, which opens up with the Mussorgsky
    number PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION, there's an irritating
    musician in the room, exhibiting signs of a bad whooping cough,
    thereby totally destroying the 20 minutes or so recording!

    There are many soft passages throughout the number, and
    it is just incredible that DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON allowed the
    bad caugh distractions and irritations (cough! cough! cough!)
    to stay on the tape!


    Unbelievable! It's so bad, I thought about unloading this
    art work, at a second hand music store for a buck and a half,
    although I surely paid more than $20 for this double CD release
    a few years ago.


    I don't care much for the vocal pieces, either.

    Aside from that, the remainder of the release is very strong,
    so ...I can't bring myself to unload it....yet, anyway.

    5 out of 5 stars Giant performance!.......2005-06-03

    Carlo Maria Giulini has been to my mind one of the most aristocratic, intelligent, wisdom and remarkable conductors in the last Century. Born in 1914, Giulini owns that special touch of genius that has been proved in several ocassions.
    There are several works in the Symphonic repertoire whose meaning depends in last instance of your personal world's approach. The list wold be extremely long but briefly I would name five classic works: The Eroica, The First of Mahler, The Ninth of Bruckner, The fourth of Nielsen and this work.
    What do you demand from this work? Fireworks, nostalgic approach, musical musculature,effectism or tonal poolish?
    Besides a great amount of recorded versions, there is however, a relatively small number of succesful performances from the early forties with Arturo Toscanini, Guido Cantelli and Igor Markevitch in the fifties, Dorati in the sixties and then Markevitch again and Giulini in the seventies.
    Giulini gives this work a remarkable stature, enriching the score with sumptuous details and rubatos, smart accents, inflexions, color sense and above all a noblesse spirit that personally I haven't listened in any other previous version.
    Go for this golden treasure recording. But do not expect great fireworks exercises. Giulini never searched the gallery' s applause. He was a honest and original master by himself: his personal landmark.

          This cd is about as straight forward as alternative rock gets. Hard driving, melodic, well produced. This isn't the most original cd I've heard, but the combination of styles is done, very, very well. The influences here are obvious, but no one band shines through in the fighting jack's style. You can hear bits and pieces of the foo fighters, rival schools, a tiny bit of sunny day real estate, embodyment, and a surprising inclusion of a bit of a much underated band once known as puller. This cd is done quite well. It starts to lag a bit around track 9 when the customary slow songs kick in, but the overall length of the cd makes up for it. If you like alternative rock, I doubt you will be disappointed by this cd.

          Born from San Jose, the Fighting Jacks are slowly but surely making a name for themselves in the music world. This is a solid album; it has many layers and not linear like many indie bands are these days. The lyrics are insightful and the singing fits the music gracefully. I saw them live last week (in SJ) and they can certainly rokken roll. The tracks have yummy melodies but intense and grinding drums and guitars that you can headbang as well as sing along to. The songs have pretty good buildup and keep you interested.

          My only complaint is the overuse of guitar pedals; if it were less, it would have sparkled instead of being uninventive.
