As "Underworld: Evolution" continues the saga of the story, so does the new Soundtrack Album continue the tone set musically. Chester Bennington is best known as the lead singer of iconic rock band Linkin Park. Underworld Evolution.......2007-06-23

This was something of a mediocre soundtrack, I thought. The only standout tracks for me were "The Undertaker" by Puscifer and Her Portrait In Black" by Atreyu, other than that, there is nothing special here. Overall, there is nothing memorable besides the two songs mentioned above, none of the other songs or remixes did anything for me, unless you really have to have any of the songs on here, I would recommend saving your money.

This cd was great!I really enjoyed it.Most of the songs were perfect...and if not perfect they were very close.My favorite would have to be Undertaker(Renholder Remix) by Pusifer.

When I first bought and listened to this album, I thought "hmmm, lots of 'emo-labeled' bands." That didn't stop me from enjoying this soundtrack though. I liked the first two songs on this soundtrack quite a bit at first, but they got pretty old.

However, I loved Hawthorne Heights's remixed "Where Can I Stab Myself In the Ears" (my friend loved it, too), Aiden's "Last Sunrise" (which had a lot of references to Anne Rice's Interview With The Vampire), Lacuna Coil's "Our Truth" (have since became a fan of theirs), Atreyu's "Her Portrait is Black," and Cradle of Filth's "HW2"/"Halloween."

Oh, I also liked Trivium's "Washing Away Me In The Tides," Senses Fail's "Bite To Break Skin," and Slipknot's "Vermillion pt 2."

So, pretty much the producers took good songs and made them even better. I think I just named 8 of the 16 songs as being favorites, not to mention the other songs weren't bad. What does that say to you?

So, I guess that 4 is actually more like a 4.5.

I remember buying this the first day it came out, I was really curious to hear what the Damning Well and Puscifer would sound like, I was not displeased. I also really enjoyed the David Bowie track, overall this is an above average soundtrack, at least I though so.

One of the best soundtracks to a movie ever........2007-05-26

Usually I'm not big on soundtracks, but this is by far my favorite soundtrack ever. The whole album was produced by Danny Lohner, the second best person to be in Nine Inch Nails after Trent. The first song, Awakening by The Damning Well (Danny Lohner, Richard Patrick, Wes Borland) is my favorite song on there. It's just a classic hard rock song with very melodic vocals done brilliantly by Richard Patrick. The second song, REV 22:20 by Puscifer (Maynard James Keenan, Danny Lohner) is another one of my favorites on the album and it has the sentual type vibe to it with extra vocals by Milla. All of the songs are really good, and I'm not just saying that. The Page Hamilton song was also good. Hell, all of them are worth listening to. The album will be worth the amount of money you spend, I can tell you that. It has some great collaborations and thats what got me interested in it in the first place. That and the fact that I'm a huge Danny Lohner fan (and he did a great job with this, by the way). I highly recommend it!

Better than I thought..........2006-10-15

I bought this album because iTunes wouldn't let me download the Puscifer track unless I downloaded the entire album... the rest of the CD actually isn't all that bad.

It took me months to buy this because I bought Underworld Evolution for one track and the rest of the CD wasn't anything to climax about. Songs like "Rev 22:20", "Optimissed", "Bring Me The Head of the Disco King", "Awakening", and every Renholder track on this album make it worth buying. I'd mention the A Perfect Circle tracks, but I already had those so they weren't new. They're a nice addition, though.

I never watched the movie so I can't really say if the songs fit in with the theme and feel of the film.

This CD is definately better than its sister. If you're thinking about buying one or the other, go with this one first.

One of the best mid-late 90s electronica compilation albums ever..........2006-08-25

This soundtrack is great.... it really helped me discover electronic music in general. Growing up in the midwest, no radio stations actually played techno, house, or anything electronic except for the horrible 'pop/dance' stuff on a few sad sad channels. I remember downloading Mp3s using hotline in 1997 or so, and I'd que a few to download, then listen the next day. I knew I liked electronic music, as it as used in movies pretty often, but it was just so hard to find! The internet changed this. This album represents some of the best bands from the time period (Prodigy, Underworld, Orbital, etc) doing tracks that are now CLASSICS of the genre. Aside from perfectly fitting the film's fantasy world of graphical hacking (which is weird), this album is perfect for doing almost any work involving electronics, programming, or anything with computers. Same goes for hte soundtrack to the movie "Pi". Just pop in either of these CDs, and dive into your latest project. ALMOST every track on this disc is just phenominal, 10 years later.

For all of you who miss bands like The Primitives, Adult Net, The Darling Buds, Talulah Gosh and all late 80's/early 90's indie pop, welcome to Persephone's Bees. They take the best of what made late 80's/early 90's girl bands and step it up a notch to create something new that feels familiar in a wonderful way. I've played this album at least once a day since I purchased the CD, and it's already been about a month. You just don't get tired of it. It makes you want to get up and dance.

I personally can't wait to see what they do next.

Unexpected Bliss.......2007-01-05

This album was one I was extremely excited about getting, and it surpassed my expectations. From the first song to the last, there isn't one that I skip over. I would reccomend this album to anyone with an open mind and a love for fun music. I hope Persephone's Bees keeps on making music because this is a fantastic listen.

Underworld 1992-2002 is not the full story. Underworld's back catalogue is too vast and rich for that, but it's a gripping one all the same, marking each step along the twisting road from (to paraphrase the Clash) Romford to the world. If Underworld's music has ever chimed with a moment in your life, these are good memories. The best.

Very strong collection........2005-08-06

Underworld...Well if you're reading this you are either a die-hard fan, or soon to be. '92-'02 is a wonderful album and great starter if you don't own an album yet. Plus, it's relatively cheap!
The straight talk is buy "Second Toughest in the Infants" as well-that is a 6 star album. Let these albums sink in slowly, they will stick with you forever. And play it loud.

Fans Should Venture Into This Underworld.......2004-01-20

Unless you have been following the English band's entire career since its formation in the early-90s, and through its radical transformation from rock to ambient trip-hop to intelligent dance music, and hence have every single they've ever made, `1992-2002''s variety of the band's stylistic trends should provide an enjoyable retrospective glance at Underworld's classics.
The highlights on Disc 1 are definitely the trippy 1994 hits `Mmm Skyscraper I Love You' (with otherworldly lyrics - `..and I see Elvis, and I hear God on the phone...'- and a muted, eerily perpetual beat); `Dirty Epic` (the complexity of this dub track rivals the best of Orbital and q-ziq); and `Dark & Long' (close your eyes, pretend the world just exploded and you're floating through space - the impact of this long and amazing track).
Those songs led to the opening track of Disc 2: the incredibly dark and energetic `Cowgirl' astounds with its ever-increasing layers of rhythm and melody. 1994 track `Born Slippy' is a modern dance classic, the monotonous lyrics have become the symbol of Danny Boyle's druggie hit `Trainspotting'. The film's extended soundtrack belongs to Underworld's composition, which masterfully represents the addled mind of an addict. `Push Upstairs', from Beacoup Fish, is a classy dance track, visualized very well in an amazing video everyone should check out - it dilutes the song's pretentiousness with fuzzy gorgeous landscape images; by itself `Push Upstairs' wears itself out after three minutes. `Moaner', on the other hand, benefits from its regularity - it starts off with an instrumental accelerating beat that doesn't let up until the last second, and then starts from the beginning with the supplement of emotionally charged lyrics. `Moaner' would be a craze at any club.
The rest of the tracks do not particularly stand out, but they do emphasize the quality of Underworld's highlights. Complex and stunningly vivid, `1992-2002' is Underworld's reminder that they are one of the most complex and gifted trios in contemporary dance music.

Disc 1 Provides New Content ; Disc 2 Fails to Do So.......2004-01-07

I wish Underworld had simply released only the 1st disc, and charged less for the set. Disc 1 is great, as it offers several rare tracks; Big Mouth, Dirty, mmm Skyscraper I Love You, & Spikee. These songs are all great, and make the CD worth purchasing... or at least purchasing used. Disc 2, however, is less exciting. It contains 9 tracks, 4 of which are either identical or slightly modified copies of songs from Beaucoup Fish. CD 2 is basically filled with slight variations on songs that are already in any Underworld fan's collection. I wish that instead of re-releasing a bunch of songs that people already have, Underworld had released more rare material. If anything, I think that the original songs are better than the remixes. In general, the originals tend to have longer and more complex lyrics.

Ten years of Magnificent Music sampled on 2 CDs........2004-01-03

I love this CD Anthology. It showcases some of the Underworld's best songs. It also has some very hard to find tracks like the 12 minute plus Spikee, the beautifully sad & mellow 8 ball, the original version of Dirty and the harmonica driven Big Mouth. It also has classic Underworld tunes like King of Snake, Jumbo, Born Slippy Nuxx, Dirty Epic, Dark Train, and Mmm Skyscraper I love you.

Moaner, Born Slippy Nuxx & Push Upstairs are all unique versions. Each is slightly different than the album/single versions. This makes another reason to buy this CD set. All of the songs on this 2 CD set are wonderful. If you are curious about the Underworld, buy this Anthology.

If you enjoy the Underworld, this is a great way to experience their music. This is a wonderful sample of the music they have made over the past decade. Put this CD in, sit back and let it take you where it takes you. The Underworld doesn't create songs so much as they create beautiful art that you can listen to.

11 years and still going strong..........2003-12-28

As the end of 2003 approaches, Underworld release their first compilation. Sixteen tracks separated on two discs. Eleven of the tracks have appeared on previous studio albums, while the remaining five have never appeared on a studio album at all (until this one). The compilation starts off with "Bigmouth", which makes prodigious use of the harmonica following along side a sycopated beat and a thumping bass. Later on, there's "Spikee", which is 12 minutes, 30 seconds long. A chugging "locomotive" melody is the best I can describe it, which is why I like it so much. On the second disc, there's an extended version of "Push Upstairs" (with additional lyrics)which I think is better than the original version found on "Beaucoup Fish". That, in turn, is followed by an extended version of "Moaner", which isn't that much better than the original (they should've left the last three minutes off, if you know what I mean). Still, "Moaner" is a great track. These are some of the highlights of "1992 - 2002". My only complaint is that "Dinosaur Adventure 3D" wasn't included. After all, it was released as a single (then again, it was released in 2003, hence, that's why it wasn't included). In any case, this compilation is a good start for the casual listener, and even if you aren't, you should buy this anyway for the five tracks not released on any prior album.

On 1994's Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Underworld took the sexy vocal groove of the epic "Mmm Skyscraper I Love You" and expanded it to album length. It's derivative, but by no means is it forgettable. With "Skyscraper," Underworld created the perfect club track; it was dark and dubby, with a relentless groove chugging along below atmospheric noises and a sinister, suggestive vocal. Extended to over an hour, it's a long and seductive hypnosis session, a decadent film noir journey through dark impulses and impure thoughts. Vocalist Karl Hyde provides a monotonous, stream-of-consciousness narrative which, when chopped and rearranged, reveals a quintessentially British reserve that keeps the album mysterious. The Masterful Music of Madness.......2007-04-18

For almost twenty years, the British duo of Hyde and Smith have been recording as Underworld. This was their first studio album (made with the collaboration of DJ Emerson, who has since left the group), and it is a synapse-shattering example of pure electronic genius made even more impressive when you consider that its electroclash ingenuity and acid house ambiences are as powerful as anything being made today.

If you wondering what to expect, keep wondering. You can listen to this record over and over again and be surprised every time. The reason that music like this exists is because there are no words to approximate what it means or accomplishes. You could say that some songs flow like the trickle-down perspiration on the walls of unexplored caves ("Dark & Long"), that some of them illustrate the electrochemical hopscotch of viruses invading healthy cells ("Spoonman"), that some of the tunes are the aural equivalent of lazy, Missourian sedimentary fossilization, silt and grit burying half-heard secrets ("River of Bass").

I could point to similar bands, if that would help. Here there is A3's country-wise spiritualism, Morphine's coarse-ground flophouse jazz,
Crystal Method's spirit mixed with Zero 7's laconic mentality. Again, though, this is a case where the whole is much more than the sum of the parts. How to describe the wickedness of "Cowgirl" or the sonorous luminosity of "Surfboy?" Will words do "Mmm Skyscraper I Love You" any justice at all?

Nah. It's enough, I think, to say that this album is an unnerving work of art, an example of electronica that -- like electricity itself -- defies containment, defies shape, defies limitations. It charges the slow, wilful spark of precarious profundity, it rips through the impulse to think and remember, it ignites the vicious and verdant instinct to get up and move. If Cicero was right when he said that "No sane man will dance," then this record should make lunatics of us all.

From the slow slithery groove of "Dark & Long" to the collosal techno anthem of "Mmm Skyscraper..." to the brilliantly kinetic pop of "Cowgirl" to the masterfully crafted nocturnal journey of "Dirty Epic" this album showcases Underworld at the peak of their compositional prowess in the realm of trance-oriented electronica. Now and then vocalist Karl Hyde sedately renders abstract lyrics that flow effortlessly between the layers of instrumentation and sometimes break into catchy mantras ("thirty thousand feet above the earth / its a beautiful thing / everybody's a beautiful thing"). However the sheer virtuosity of the above mentioned classics unavoidably relegates the remainder of the album to mere filler status (albeit not without their merits, such as the spare yet singularly atmospheric "Tongue"). Despite this "Dubnobasswithmyheadman" is a timeless achievement by Underworld that has not and most likely will never be bettered by any of their later work.

Every song here flows like it's supposed to. Skyscraper, Spoonman, Cowgirl... I only wish they could have squeezed Dark Train or Born Slippy onto it. By far this is the best one by Underworld.

This is the first album of a fantastic band, which had an undeniable influence in the field of electronica. This album is a perfect example of how to make the so-called "dumb" electronic music a feast, a parade of ideas.

Dubnobasswithmyheadman is a flawless piece, filled with electronica classics, along with my favorite song of the genre "Mmm Skyscraper I Love You". Other standout tracks are "Dark And Long", "Dirty Epic" and "Cowgirl". The songs are all multi-layered, they are not easy to digest and might be a bit hard to understand for the first-time listener. To catch the flavor, one shouldn't listen to the whole album for the first time, it might become a bit confusing. This is subtle music for subtle listeners.

This album is anything but boring and I can only feel sorry for those who don't get this kind of music. Maybe it's time to set aside the prejudices and listen to the genre as a genre and not like an undesirable side product. However, for newbies, this isn't the place to start, they should try Orbital.

Nevertheless those, who only know "Born Slippy" from Underworld, miss a lot by not having this album. This is the cradle of the latter and honestly - a rock-hard cradle. This album is superior to the other albums of the band, this is pure electronica and fusion. The two things can't and shouldn't be separated, this is the beauty of the genre. Good sampling is an art which is quite hard to master and many fail. Long-time fans know what I talk about.

So if you liked Underworld's other efforts, you should give this one a try, you won't be disappointed. This might become your favorite album of the band - it has become mine or rather it has never lost this status. This is one of the best debut albums of the 90s.

Dark Side.......2006-12-20

If you are looking for the Dark Side of the Moon of the 90s, there were two. This, and a certain album by Radiohead. The creativity, innovation and blazing originality of Underworld was never better represented in the studio than on this disc. I experienced Underworld live in NYC in the late 90s, on a whim when a friend suggested that I go the day of. That show single-handedly resurrected my love for alternative music. So I bought this after. An absolute masterpiece, one of the best albums of the past 20 years. Unless you're a moron, the first track will blow you away, it builds, changes and all the while chills you like nothing else out there. Then you are ready for the rest of the disc, a genre in and of itself.

This has got be one of the best "techno" CDs made thus far. I hate to use the word "techno" because I think Underworld gets lumped in with a lot of other inferior bands that are labeled as "techno." Underworld is NOT really techno, the don't make "dance" music per se. If you listen to their music, you can tell there are influences that are far ranging from drum 'n bass to jazz. This band is incredible and very unique. There really is no other band like them. These guys are the real deal, they are true artists.

This album makes my soul warm like nothing else in this world ever could. Of all the countless bands and styles of music I listen to, this one CD is my unsurpassable favorite. I've been an Underworld fan since 1991 and no album of theirs has ever disappointed me but of them all, 2nd Toughest is audible magic.

What more can really be said? I agree with many here, that this is simply the best techno album ever created. It's tough to call Underworld's music "techno" though. Underworld distinguishes itself, and just simply cannot be molded into a specific genre. Somehow they manage to infuse so many sounds and styles into their music, it becomes truly unique. Techno, trance, electronica, pop, punk, it's all here.
I was introduced to this album about 7 years ago. It was my first Underworld experience. To this day I get chills when I listen. If you can't blast it, listen to this album with headphones to really pick out the detail. This is timeless piece of music.

Surprisingly Surprised.......2007-01-01

I had remembered the smash one-hit wonder, "Underneath the Radar" and considered buying this disc for one song only (practically a sin) for a long time. I finally ordered it from Amazon and it never showed up! I got my money back and ended up buying it on eBay brand new for $13.49, including shipping. As I loathe wasting money, I was afraid I would not like this album and regret all the hoops I jumped through to get it. However three other songs were liked upon first listen! This is a big deal because I am picky. After wrapping Christmas presents for hours while listening to this and subsequently washing dishes, paying bills, etc., I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS ALBUM! I am extremely impressed with the complexity of the music and the quality of the recording - for having been recorded in London in 1988! There is some very forward-thinking on this album - and I am not a techno fan by any means. Most songs I hear today on the radio do not compare to the UNIQUENESS and creativity on this album. I am extremely glad I bought this and I would even play this for visiting guests... it's that good. Every time I listen, I hear something I didn't notice before, and I am impressed all over again.

It is simply amazing to hear the band from what they were to what they become. They have developed not just in song writing but in the amount of sound they can use to produce their product. On this album they are still looking for what is "Underworld", and it is a lot of fun following their search. Worth listening to "Everything, everything" afterwards to fully enjoy them.

Actual Music!.......2005-07-12

Don't get me wrong - I like the techno Underworld stuff on Friday nights when I'm anticipating a party weekend. But the other 90% of the time when I am not in party mode, I prefer something more melodic, and this album fits the bill.

I disagree with comparisons to Yaz and Depeche Mode. This album has a little bit more mature funk to it. If I was to compare it to another band, I would say it sounds more like Ministry before they went hard industrial. And, similar to the early Tears for Fears albums, all of the songs are strong enough to make the entire album playable.

If you like 80s pop, this album is a must. But if you like the edgier techno of Underworld, you might be disappointed.

This is a great CD. I've had it was released.

Quite frankly, while I like their newer stuff, it doesn't compare to this gem.

I don't understand all of the negative reviews from people who obviously have broken ears! Underneath the Radar is incredible. If you love Underworld unconditionally, then you'd pick this up and fall in love as I have. "Bright White Flame", "I Need a Doctor", and "Pray" are especially excellent.

Angèle Dubeau is a remarkable violinist, and here, she and her all-woman, 12-strong (including herself) group, La Pieta, tackle some of the showiest---and most interesting---virtuoso pieces composed or transposed for solo violin and strings, in various combinations, and occasionally featuring a piano. The violin tone at the start of Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre has a warmth which stays with us throughout the disc, despite the fact that so many of the pieces are razzle-dazzle. Hearing the delicious can-can from the overture to Orpheus in the Underworld so thrillingly played, with as much emphasis on the piano as the violin, is a treat, and the "Fire dance" from El amor brujo positively throbs. There's great skill---even daring---in the Tartini "Devil's Trill" sonata and a Boccherini Sonata, but the string tone never turns strident. And as a complete surprise, Dubeau and her group offer an arrangement of The Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black" which teases and riffs before getting into the melody, then plays it in the lower reaches of the instrument, and is then joined by the piano, allowing it to reach upwards and jazzily improvise---and then she throws in a moment or two of "Sympathy for the Devil" (!) before it concludes with the original melody. There are other joys on this CD as well---this is not your everyday violin bon-bon recital. It's all highly recommended. --Robert Levine

FABULOUS!.......2007-02-15

I ADORE this CD. I first heard it on the local classical music station and my ears picked right up. "What IS that?" It was so alive, so vibrant. The station only plays it about once a year, but each time it catches my attention. "Ah, that's Angele Dubeau." The selections are a mix of new and old. Two of the new pieces are by Francois Dompierre; his "Le Diable matou" is one of my favorites. I play this CD over and over and over...

I disagree with the reviewer who said you must love violin music to enjoy this. I do enjoy the violin, but I think the CD's power and reach go far beyond violin lovers.

The CD also includes a DVD of concert excerpts.

Give this CD a try. I'm so glad I did.

Unique and pleasant........2006-12-23

It is refreshing to hear something new. The tracks are old favorites but the sound is new. Different. And in a good way.
Not the same old interpretations sped up or slowed down. But a genuine new groove down a familiar road.
She is a great violinist and has a knack for interplay with the rest of the band. It's not a flashy highly technical performance like you may expect from Perlman or Mutter. But not on the emotional ragged edge like Sonnenberg. But something in between with a new twist.

Emotional, Powerful, Fizzy.......2005-05-19

Long a stodgy devotee of baroque music, with the first few notes of this strong stuff I became an addict. Over and over again I play this CD, never quite anticipating the power and emotional bang of the music as it plays - even though I know the notes by now. If you ever studied Walter Piston's "harmony" the structures and transitions are back-of-the-book stuff, but the push is all elemental, basic, built-in, the familiar 1-4-5 with musical sequins, trampolines, backflips, and gelginite. Wow. And then some.

I'm so besotted, I had a couple of 13-year old boys (my son and a friend) listen to it in the car one day. They were bug-eyed after a couple of cuts, and not with horror. Now they ask for it, and yell with glee when the musical tension breaks over their heads in crashing chords.

Can I add a few more stars?

Infernal Violins.......2004-04-12

This music is fantastic. Because the violin she uses is a Stradovarius, the music pours like liquid velvet out of it. The choices of compositions are fantastic also. I think her interpretation of them along with the violin and her back-up group are what make this album so outstanding.

Unlike the Chemical Brothers--their longstanding U.K. brothers in electronica--Underworld have been allowed to grow (relatively) old without being accused of stagnating. A Hundred Days Off, Underworld's first studio release since the departure of member Darren Emerson, demonstrates why. An ecstatic headrush of percolating beats, swirling synth, and shape-shifting melodies, A Hundred Days Off drags everything from Delta blues to space-age pop onto the dance floor. Because the pair takes their cues in part from the real world, filtering each idea through the prism of a rave record, we get wonky faux church bells chiming in one especially frenzied passage of the nine-minute epic "Two Months Off." Elsewhere, as on the curiously named "Trim," straightforward vocal phrasings are set against (what might be) twangy, scotch-soaked guitar while a static drum beat clicks in the distance. On the towering centerpiece track, "Dinosaur Adventure 3D," a vicious cymbal guts an otherwise unassuming house track, albeit one built on an increasingly complex (and speedy) palette of sounds, before a tribal vocal goosesteps over top. Underworld have an uncanny ability of bringing unparalleled creativity and inventiveness to their listeners. There's no one I can think of that keeps it this fresh, this real, this imaginative. They pour their souls into it, and it's so obvious. It's palpable.

If you've ever seen them live, you know this. They have a true care for their craft, and this is the latest installment. You owe it to yourself and your friends to support a band that laid the foundation and continues to bring the love.

Probably the Best Album, they could have made...(Given the Circumstances!!!).......2007-06-20

A strange one this.....I've had this album when it first came out in 2002, then I sold my copy a couple of years later, after thinking that it lacked the momentum and progression, or even ideas of previous albums, only to pick it up very recently having stumbled across the rare Australian 2-Cd tour edition. This is the album that will be forever associated with the departure of one of it's members, DJ Darren Emerson. And although his presence is missed, with this release, routinely sounding more relaxed and less tightly focused then previous albums, with far more of the softly spoken stream-of-consciousness vocalised house blues of Karl Hyde vocals, and less of the pulsating tracks that broke up other albums.

Initially this was one of the reasons, why I've never quite fully engaged with "A Hundred Days off"....seemingly comparing it with the long dense hypnotic eclectic fusion songs of "Second Toughest in the Infants", the distant, detached melancholic minimal ambience of "Dubnobasswithmyheadman", and progressive, energetic, tough breakbeats of "Beaucoup Fish". The problem I had with "A Hundred Days off" was that it seemed to be a slightly untidy mish-mash of areas explored in previous albums, but with diminishing returns. There was nothing that grabbed in on this album, in quite the same way as "Push Downstairs/Blueski/Dirty Epic/Moaner/Juanita/Dark & Long", and although this album had it's moments "Two Months off/Bullet Lane/Trim/Luetin", I found myself mostly neglecting what is essentially a good/great album, but compared to past glories, it didn't seem to engage in quite the same way. Don't get me wrong, I did/do like the album, but it was arguably the album that I listened to by far the least, and begin to gather dust in my Cd collection.

So I ended up selling my (1-cd) edition of this album.....only to find a really cheap copy of the limited 2-Cd edition, which featured Live tracks from previous albums, and remixes of tracks of this album, as well as a couple of videos. And having gone back and listened to this album after having not heard it, for a least 2 years, and without the comparison issue not looming large over my impression of the album. And having said that...and listening to this without any preconceived notions of their previous work (and the realisation of Darren Emerson, not contributing, here), its actually a great record, and considering that this was the best album that could have made, given the circumstances...which referenced their past, without being completely tied by it. Yet, not diversifying from what they'd become widely known for. Its an album the mixes a brilliant succession of harmonies and basslines, tone's down the arrangements, and made them more accessible, a little self-indulgent, a little more nuanced and subtle, with the majority of the tracks moving less intensely, with any rough edges smoothed off, as it flows along with nice BPM's and smooth beats, and although the album glides along without much in the way of any particularly innovative or unexpected twists, this is Underworld, creating an album with one less member, and thus playing to their strengths. Which is melodic, relatively subdued, mood music, with the occasional concessions to the dancefloor, a heavily augmented sound framed around the ubiquitous vocals of Hyde, punctuating atmospherically detached tracks, which highlight Underworld's trait for songs which have an elegance and a recognizable stamp.

Ultimately, though this is probably Underworlds weakest album, compared to "Second Toughest in the Infants", Dubnobasswithmyheadman", "Beaucoup Fish". It doesn't quite have the legs to feature as prominently as those albums, which (for me) tip on the right side of classic albums. But not to take nothing away from Underworld...as they could have called it quits, with the departure of Darren Emerson, and his absence is felt on this album. But to not recognise the achievement of Karl Hyde & Rick Smith on this album would be foolish, as they've created a great and very solid album, and providing you can be prepared to listen to this without prejudice for their previous albums, this is definitely recommended.

What happened to the vocals?.......2006-06-15

I just got this CD yesterday and have been basically listening to it non-stop. With Darren Emerson leaving, I figured that the poetry and strange lyrics would be more present, and the dance grooves lessened.

Strangely I found the opposite to be true. The vocals, when they're present at all, are in the background, and mostly repeated lines. Some tracks are missing vocals entirely. It almost sounds like they are trying to prove that they can get on without Emerson.

So why did I give this CD four stars after all these gripes? Because it's still a fantastic album. I have yet to hear an Underworld track that I haven't liked, and this album is no different. It's a wonderful piece of art. I can just hope the next album has a bit more vocal work in it.

Mature yet innovative.......2006-02-05

Underworld continues to impress with their release of this CD. It continues to contain that ineffable quality providing a level of comfort that comes from continuity over time yet is truely different from previous releases. There are fewer high energy tracks and more comtemplative ones. For this reason, this release is quite different and takes some time to process and get used too. You definitely need to listen to it several times before you get the themes and arcs that are present across tracks. This release has greater cohesion across tracks that is greater than the sum of it's individual tracks (too use a gestaltic analogy). Very cool, just take the time to get to know it and you will come to appreciate the creativity of 100 days and underworld.
