Customer Reviews:
Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Album Description
Originally released in 2002, "Winnemucca" was recorded at Type Foundry studios in Portland, Oregon by John Askew and Joanna Bolme (Steven Malkmus). "Winnemucca" finds the members of Richmond Fontaine mining a subtler vein than on previous efforts. The album deftly conjures up images of a late night ride through the desert where death, despair, and ultimately hope reign supreme. With "Winnemucca" Richmond Fontaine have established themselves as a band willing to travel where their music takes them.
Customer Reviews:
I'm in love with the songs.......2006-05-18
It's hard to write an album review when you find yourself in love with certain songs. I would hold true everything the above reviews say about this album. "Northline" is brilliant but the absolute gem on this album is "Western Skyline" - perhaps one of the best "alt-country" songs ever written!!!
Utter Perfection.......2003-01-23
I loved Richmond Fontaine's previous two albums, especially Lost Son, their latest before Winnemucca. But with Winnemucca, Richmond Fontaine have outdone themselves. I must say that this is one of the best, most timeless, touching, and simply gorgeous albums in the entire "alt.country" genre, if not in all music. Willy Vlautin's lyrics are evocative, emotional, and show so much pathos for the type of person i like to call the 'sensitive ...-up'. These types pepper his songs...like the kid being driven by his brother to a jail for low-level offenders (you know, the type who choose to imbibe a substance other than alcohol and have to spend the rest of their life paying for our society's hypocrisy)...and ray thames from 'five degrees below zero' who pawned all his stuff and now has to live at his uncle's due to some imaginable addiction or mess up (as a female ray thames, i know exactly how miserable this kind of thing can be). They reach musical, not just lyrical, epiphany here too, from each tear-jerking pedal steel note to the wails of feedback on the second instrumental "Patty's Retreat", Richmond Fontaine have not gotten the kind of attention that many other past and present alt.country bands have gotten, and all I can say is its a damn shame. They make Uncle Tupelo sound coarse, Ryan Adams sound like a bratty punk, and the supposedly "seminal" Gram Parsons sound like the most overrated performer in the history of the genre. And to the few who may agree with this review, I'd suggest you check out Pinetop Seven, another wonderful and unappreciated 'alt.country' band. Their album "Rigging The Toplights" has the same kind of gorgeous fairground melancholy as "Winnemucca". Also try Hem's debut album, "Rabbit Songs" for a similar kind of beauty with amazing female vocals. If the three of them played LA sometime soon, it would be sheer musical heaven.
Who is Richmond Fontaine?.......2002-06-17
Shades of Jay Farrar and Matthew Ryan. "Five Degrees Below Zero" is worth the price of admission alone. Wish these talented guys out of Oregon would do some touring. Mr. V is a great writer, and I can just sit around all day reciting the lyrics. Great effort!!
Excellent alt-country!.......2002-06-15
This CD reverberates with feelings and memories of being isolated and alone, walking along a 2-lane highway, trying to hitch a ride to a new destination. This album is much different than RF's previous albums, and perhaps not as good as the amazing "Miles From", however, the music and lyrics catch the listener's ear and pulls him in like a good novel. As with most of Willy Vlautin's songs, all the songs here tell a story. Most of them entail normal people put though extraordinary circumstances. In "Northern Skyline", a man holds his friend on the side of the road after a car wreck, as he makes promises to the dying man of "glowing light and beautiful women" before he is finally "set free." "Northline" tells the story of a former skinhead girlfriend of the storyteller who had fallen into the traps of her other boyfriend's messed up belief system and disappeares from the narrator's life. Perhaps the most disturbing, yet beautiful song is, "5 Degrees Below Zero" in which the protagonist, in a fit of rage about his life and his surroundings, stops the bus he is on in the middle of nowhere so he can walk out into the freezing elements to his imminent death. RF is not only the engaging lyrics of Mr. Vlautin, but also the incredible pedal steel playing of Paul Brainard, whose simple, but tasty style completes the feeling of each song perfectly. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes eery, Brainard's playing infuses the music with a touch of old-style country and new-psychedelica. The only thing missing from "Winnemucca" is the country punk that it has shown on all of its previous releases. Most of the songs are relaxed, and they are meant to do so...still some of the bands finer moments in the past have been from its Minutemen or X influences.

Great CD!!.......2003-08-07
This is a must for all trombonists and music historians!! The sound of these groups is just amazing! Nowhere else can you get a sound like you do with the instruments that these trombonists use. Where else can you hear a contrabass, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, and sopranino trombones all together? A great CD for a historical reference on the trombone also...tromobone chiors are one of the oldest forms of music, and THE oldest perfoming groups in the USA are the Moravian trombone choirs. This CD gives us a rare look into the past of how trombones were commonly used in centuries past, and how the tradition continues today.
Favorite Moravian chorales from childhood........1999-11-20
Trombone choirs! I love them. Everytime I hear this recording, I see again the church of my childhood and the trombone choir standing out in the snow near the front steps playing Christmas chorales during the hour before the Christmas Eve service. Why were they out there a full hour before the service? If you wanted a seat, you had to arrive an hour early, because late comers sat in folding chairs in the cloakrooms, or stood in the back. That church was filled to brimming only on Christmas Eve, because music lovers came from miles away to hear traditional Moravian Christmas music, and where else could one possibly hear it? Some of it is on this recording. The words sung to track 8 are "All my heart this night rejoices...", and that sense of anticipation and pleasure is exactly what Moravians feel as they enjoy a night of great music, sung mostly by the people in the pews, not just the choirs. It's all here. The great songs from Advent, Lent, songs of repentance, forgiveness, joy, for baptising babies and burying old people. When you hear track 19, Hosanna, think of a room full of singers on Palm Sunday, echoing back and forth to each other, the little girls and women singing back to the boys and men. My only criticism is that there are perhaps too many songs in minor keys grouped together. They evoke too much sadness and start to sound like endless dirges. The musical interpretation and masterful rendering of the chorales is absolutely delightful, not only for us who hold all the words in our heads and are singing along, but also for those who will assign their own meaning to the music.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent album, what a way to kick off the new Millenium.......2007-02-16
This album is probably the strongest of the current line-up in Helloween. This album from start to finish is a bit heavier than all previous albums. Mr. Torture is a nice little nod to the tounge and cheek history of Helloween, but then the album rips through a great mix of power metal/dark metal songs unparalleled in other helloween albums. A natural evolution to catch up to the times. There is almost more of a concept here than on the "Keepers 3" Album. Highlights for me are Escilation 666, Mirror Mirror, and the instant classic single "If I could Fly", the obvious first single from this album, and excellent choice by the band, great melodyIf you have seen the video for "If I Could Fly" well done also, look around for that. The title track is a perfect way to end the album with a nice "epic" 9 minute song that helloween is known for. This was a great way for helloween to thrust themselves back into the metal scene. Helloween fans need this album, new fans should embrace this also. Buy this album.
Of note, there were several versions of this album put out. There is the US 12 track version. Also a 13 track japanese version with "Madness of The Crowds" as a bonus track (available on Just a Little Sign single also from Rabbit Don't Come EASY). There is a newer US 12 track version that comes with the "If I could Fly" single which features Deliver Us from Temptation and If I could Fly extended. Finally, there is the version I own which came as "The Dark Box"- a 12 track CD, neck band/lanyard, sticker, 5 postcards featuring the band members, mouse pad, and a Zippo type refillable lighter in a nice box. Any version you purchase, well worth the deal. This is a must have helloween album.
Just something I noticed.........2007-02-11
I'm not going to write a full review of this album, other than to say it more than lives up to Helloween's characteristic excellence in musicianship and songwriting. I was just wondering if anyone else noticed that in the song Immortal, around 1:35, the guitar riff briefly takes on a variation that is strikingly close to the riff in 'One Step into Paradise' by Andi Deris' former band, Pink Cream 69. Also, the lyrics over this particular verse end with the word 'Paradise'. I think this is an intentional nod to the old song.. pretty cool if it is in fact intentional. Anyway, this is a great album. My top picks for tracks would be: I Live For Your Pain, Mr. Torture, All Over the Nations, Salvation, and the title track.
The Dark Ride.......2006-11-10
'The Dark Ride' takes a turn from the 'happy' music they played on earlier albums, But it is a definate good turn. With songs like "If I Could Fly","Escalation 666",and "Mirror Mirror" makes this album an instant classic.Andi Deris singing in this album is simply amazing. Just because it has lower record sales than others, Dosent mean its not good, And it dosent mean you shouldnt buy it.
Ticket Please.......2006-09-08
I Had Low Expectation's for this because Dark Helloween Albums Were Harder for me to get into that there other releases (ex. Im Not A Walls Of Jericho Fan) So When I Listend To This I Got Quite A Shock It Was Actually Preety Good. Some Tracks are good some seem a little more flat though but i can enjoy it for what it's worth.
Rundown
1. Beyond The Portal (Intro) - There's A More Creative Twist To This One That there Other Intro's Which Is Nice.
2. Mr. Torture - One Of The Best Trakcs On The Album The Lyrics = Gold
3. All Over The Nations - Really Seems Out of Place For This Album And It Seems Kinda Falt.
4. Escalation 666 - Alright Track The Only Real Satanic Track on Here(Which Is Good Cause I Have Enough Satanic CD's)
5. Mirror, Mirror - This One Really Stands Out Like Mr. Torture The Lyrics = Gold
6. If I Could Fly - Much More Slower And Releaxed But Still Quite Good
7. Salvation - A Little Too Long And Similar To The Above Track
8. The Departed (sun is going down) - LIke The Two Above Lacking Somehting
9. I Live For Your Pain - My Favorite Track On This CD's The Vocal's Are Perfect
10. We Damn The Night - Another Fast Paced Song Good Foloow Up To The One Above
11. Immorital - Lyric Theme Is Good Little Slow
12. The Dark Ride - Not A Second Too Long, This Whole Song Is About One Twisted Carnival Ride Or Something The Lyrics _ Gold The Vocal's = Gold
(My Version Has 2 Bouns Tracks That Can Be Found On The "If I Could Fly" Single)
13. Deliver Us From Temptation - More Heavy Than Any Other Track on This Album (I Have No IDea If This Is A Cover Or Something Though)
14. If I Could Fly (Extended Version) - Really Didnt See The Need For This One Cause It Sounds Just Like The First
All in If You Liked The Time Of The Oath Buy It (It's Better Than Master Of The Rings)
One last good stop before the fall..........2006-05-15
Like most bands, Helloween's music has taken different faces and forms over the years as various members have come and gone. While some feel the magic was over when Kai Hansen and/or Michael Kiske left, I honestly feel that band has managed to do well for themselves since Deris has taken over as vocalist. While the band never did regain their superstar status of the late 80's, the band has managed to crank out some good tunes since the mid 1990s.
While The Dark Ride proves no different, it marks the point I personally draw the line as far as Helloween music is concerned (outside a few of their newer songs). You may ask why I draw the line here? Well, the answer really lies in the songs themselves and which members wrote them.
Drummer Uli Kusch cranks out "Mr. Torture," which starts the album with one hell of a bang. He also contributes the dark and brooding "The Departed (Sun Is Going Down)" which is just a perfect fit for an album such as this. Roland Graplow also makes his influence well known with the excellent title track that never derails (sorry, bad pun) despite it multiple twist and turns. Unfortunately, Kusch and Graplow would eventually be canned (think Weikath here, who thinks he needs to be in charge of EVERYTHING). I simply have a hard time contemplating why you'd fire these two when their contributions to this album are excellent and significant. In hindsight, they did help form Masterplan soon after, so not all is lost (and if I were them I wouldn't want my name attached to works such as Rabbit Don't Come Easy and Keepers III).
Deris also makes his impact here as well, offering the straight-up rocker "Mirror Mirror," the heart-felt piano-driven "If I Could Fly" (uh, why is there three different versions of this song when they only vary in length? - two would suffice) and the dark and sinister "Immortal". "I Live For Your Pain" is basically is re-worked version of "A Handful of Pain" from Better Than Raw, and such songs would appear again (see "Lair" from Rabbit Don't Come Easy) that they have become too stereotypical for their own good. Deris also throws in a few clunkers to boot, which include "We Damn The Night" and "Deliver Us From Temptation" which appears on the included "If I Could Fly" single - which is were such songs belong. If your willing to shell out the money, the Japanese bonus track "The Madness of The Crowds," which is Deris is also credited with writing, is a excellent non-stop in-your-face barrage of guitar and drum. Of course, you could be "smart" about it and just buy the European Just A Little Sign single for that song and pick up the "If I Could Fly" video at the same time.
Ironically enough, Weikath's two tracks "All Over the Nations" and "Salvation" are among the album's weakest moments - they're so stereotypical it isn't even funny. Containing what many dub as that patented "Helloween Hymn" sound that I honestly can't stand it. In all honesty think they canned the wrong men.
Also, I must say it really angers me when I see the members of the band themselves bashing this album. I'm really sick of hearing comments such as "it's to nu-metal" and "we were heading in the wrong direction". Nobody held a gun to your head when you wrote these songs (which for the most part are excellent) so quit pointing your fingers at the producers! If you want to talk about "wrong direction" take a look at Rabbits Don't Come Easy and Keepers Pt.III! The "back to our roots" thing the band is trying to cultivate nowadays nothing but a big joke.
So, if you like were Deris and crew were heading after Better Than Raw, you'll probably enjoy The Dark Ride. However, for this particular fan the story ends here.

Only for Dark Zone Lovers!.......2002-02-15
I highly recommend this album only if your a fan of "Lexx," otherwise it might be to new-age goth for the music maven at heart. The album features a lot of background music heard from the first season of the sci-fi show like the intro song and a the Brunnen-G fight song. (You know that song that Kai is always singing). There are also some actual dialogue clips from the show that come before the appropriate songs. I admit some parts of the album are a bit cheese, but some of the cuts of this album would be great for radio station spots. I'm currently a college Dj with a 80's dark wave show and the music from this album is great for background beds and intros. So once again this album is probably only for the cheese at heart or people interested in having a great dark zone show!
My favorite quote from the album is on track number #9.
790: "I'm equipped with love."
Stanley Tweedle: "I'm equipped with a love muscle."
(I think the song either appears in Luvliner or Super Nova when Stanley Tweedle is almost molested by Tim Curry (A.k.a poet man)
Tales/Lexx CD Other Worldly.......2001-05-24
The CD from Tales From A Parallel Universe or to it's fans better known as The Lexx Movies, is able to transend it's other worldly music to even the hardest sceptic of Lexx. The rythum and melodies of the songs bring pictures to one's mind of it's imaginative subject matter. And no one can resist the upbeat Fight Song of the Brunnen-G. Skeptics open your mind and take a ride on the Lexx to a new universe of music. Enjoy!
great scifi soundtrack of an underrated show.......2001-01-27
Lexx is either adored or hated. This soundtrack is universally adored. I have known people who have never seen Lexx break into Ya-a-o fight song. My best friend who cannot stand Lexx chooses this CD as his prefered gaming music. Sample junkies take note taht many good sounds and vocal clips are on this as well. So even if you are not a fan of the show but really like well composed and intresteing soundtracks, you must get this NOW!
Marty Simon's work on Lexx is Fantastic!.......2000-12-02
This CD was part two of my two step doorway into loving Lexx (perhaps see my Lexx review). Part one was Sci-Fi Channel's playing of the Four Lexx Movies (Sci-Fi's terrible marketing of Lexx almost stopped me from giving it the chance it deserves). The music on this CD, created by Marty Simon, is the fantastic score from those movies. Everyone's favorite "Yo-A-O (Fight Song Of The Brunnen-G)" is probably the Lexx-addict centerpiece of the CD; it is a brilliant vocal piece that has all the sense of the artist/poet warrior pride that the Brunnen-G culture was famed for, plus a tense and dramatic optimism for victory all wrapped into a less-than 60 second piece. This is brilliant composition and execution. The other tracks of note are the grand sounding theme ("Welcome To The Dark Zone"), "Gigashadow March," "Fantasy Dance" (which lives up to its name in a cute and positive but not at all Disney way), the dance-like thematic "Moth Ride" and even "Milk Fed Boys," which you have to see "Tales From a Parallel Universe 2.0" (second movie) to fully appreciate. If you like Lexx (even if only for just the four movies), pick up this CD; you will certainly appreciate it. It's one of my personal favorites. I hope to see more of Marty Simon's Lexx soundtrack released in the future. I am off to find out what else he created...
Fantasy/Futuristic Ambience for Non-Fans.......2000-07-20
I originally bought this soundtrack because I had seen a few epidodes of Lexx and thought I was going to become a fan. Although I don't watch the show much anymore, this CD still gets good play time in my house. That's because it's great, without even the factor of being tied to the movies and series. This CD was the first time I bought a score type soundtrack instead of ones filled with songs played in a movie (and overplayed on radio). The tracks are all enjoyable. The ones that really stand out are Battle Of The Universe (a laid back futuristic battle march), Love Muscle (a techno-ish dance nightmare, but I love it), and Zev's Shower (a beautiful, feminine journey). I even racked my brain and couldn't find a single thing to complain about; this whole CD is great!

Too bad it is the "Last Great Ride".......2001-01-27
Dark Carnival is Detroit rock that has progressed beyond the MC5 and Stooges...just like Destroy All Monsters, which featured vocalist Niagara, Ron Asheston on guitar (Stooges) and Michael Davis on bass (MC5)...this band features Niagara and Asheton, but with stronger material. Intense sonic-assault fretwork from Asheton not to mention very cool punk inspired lyrics sung by (all most spoken-wordish) Niagra...a cross between Diamanda Galas and PJ Harvey with a dash of Marianne Faithfull bitterness. Stand out tracks are "Bang" (Hey dude! Listen to these lyrics!)"Cops Eyes," "Bloody Mary," and the eerie instrumental "Selvira." If you dig the Stooges, or intense Detroit style hard as nails, in your face rock, then this disc is a must have. The band is rounded out with Motor City veterans Greasy Carlisi on rhythm and lead guitar, Pete Bankert on bass and L.J. Steele on drums. A live disc recorded in Cleveland in 1990 and another studio disc are out there if you can find 'em...don't miss a chance to own this because this band has gone the way of all the other great Detroit bands, a last great ride not for the timid rock fan.

I cannot believe that I am the first one even to review this album! Where are you country/ folk lovers (i.e. Jackson Browne, Neil Young etc.)? You should definately listen to this Iain album: it is magnificent. My personal favorite is "for better or worse", but "tigers will survive part II" and for example "the girl with the clouds in her eyes" are gems... Iain melancholic voice combined with beautiful lirics and country-rock and folk influences is... to good to describe. Please try this album and others by Iain Matthews. You will not regret it.

Harry is a great entertainer!.......2005-12-14
This cd is one of the better ones i have bought lately (and i buy too many!!). I bought it because i love the shows that Harry puts on where i go dancing, and i have not been let down (then again, i guess i knew i wouldn't be). Very little country gets released these days, but this is some of it--a steel guitar, gutsy stories that show what a real person Harry, and this band is fit right alongside rollicking fun tunes, making it a great album you can listen to again and again.

Album Description
Electronic composer Paul Lansky returns with his seventh album for Bridge Records. RIDE continues Lansky's exploration of new sounds in music. Idle Chatter Junior (1999) has fun with the basic idea of turning incomprehensible speech into percussion music.
Ride has a predecessor in Lansky's earlier track Night Traffic, which has been featured on Homebrew (BRIDGE 9035) and the DVD My Cinema for the Ears (Bridge 9117). Ride, like Night Traffic before it is based on recordings of a local four-lane highway in Princeton, New Jersey. This material is embedded in a rich and complex texture, and captures the sensation of being on a ride through various landscapes, towns and villages, rather than the experience of watching traffic pass by, as in Night Traffic.
Looking Back is a short piece written for the 60th anniversary of the High School of Music and Art in New York City, a place where Lansky spent three years of his childhood. The piece is a foggy processing of him singing the school song.
For the piano part of Heavy Set Lansky designed a computer model of the right hand of an imaginary (and very large) improvising pianist. The model attempts to think as a pianist might as he moves around the keyboard, listening to the concurrent harmonies, deciding when to add non-harmonic tones, play chords, go up, go down, play loud, soft, lyrically, firmly, and so on. The computer model only helped with the piano part, however. The rest of the music was written the old-fashinoned way.
Dancetracks: Remix: In 1994 Lansky wrote what basically amounts to a fancy computer-synthesized drum track for an improvising electric guitarist, and called it Dancetracks. In 1997, Lansky's friend and colleague, Steve Mackey recorded it on his CD Lost and Found (BRIDGE 9065). Steve's version was so wonderful that the urge to participate further was too much to resist. Lansky therefore decided to continue the process and make the piece into a kind of musical chain letter. Lansky took Mackey's performance, entirely removed the original 'drum track', scrambled and edited the guitar part, and added a completely new computer part. The result is a new and very different piece that is somewhat darker than the original.
