The seed of memory.......2007-07-17
I courted my wife to the music of this LP the better part of thirty years ago. It was, and is still one of finest collections of ballads and truth's recorded.
Where was I when this came out?.......2007-05-13
I bought this cd because I heard 3 of the songs in Rob Zombies horror movie "The Devil's Rejects." Excellent movie. Now I grew up in the 70's, and I never heard of Terry Reid. But the songs in the movie were pretty good, good enough that they really caught my attension in a horror film. I looked this guy up on amazon, and discovered that the 3 songs I was looking for were on this one record. I ordered it.
I still don't know what to say. I thought, I'd heard just about everything. I'm a musician, and a music history buff. Where was Terry? This album is FANTASTIC! Sorrowful, jazzy, country like blues influenced, with one or two rock songs thrown in for measure. It is one of the most unique and beautiful albums I've ever heard.
It is truly an honestly wrought piece of work about what it was like in the mid seventies.
You know...I'd pay 100.00$ for this record and it would still be worth every penny. An album like this you'll own it forever. I'd like to thank Terry for putting this on the earth for us. He did more than he will ever know. A standing ovation. 5 super stars!!!!!
Perfect album!.......2007-01-02
This cd is his shortest cd, but his best one by far. The songs on this album were simply amazing. If you like crosby, stills, nash, and young, you will adore this cd! This album has a very chill mood to it that makes it an instant favorite. Every song on here is a classic. Terry Reid has a mildly raspy, amazing voice. I think Terry Reid is one of the best singers and song writers out there. His singing is powerful yet suttle. And you will highly enjoy this album.
Terry Reid:The best kept secret in Rock !.......2006-07-16
Seed of Memory by Terry Reid is a delightful collection of tunes... Think "California nites with a bottle of wine & trusted company"... The entire cd is solid, with standouts being the title track- Seed of Memory,Brave Awakening, and by far the finest track- To Be Treated Rite ! Terry's voice, along with producer Graham Nash adding vocals, David Lindley playing slide and an uncredited appearance by Joni Mitchell in certain spots- make this perhaps one of the finest records to come out of the 70's- BUY it proudly and Pass on the Knowledge !!!
WOW!!!.......2005-08-21
I've only recently become aware of Terry Reid. I was watching "The Devil's Rejects" and really liked the songs on the soundtrack, not knowing that Rob Zombie used 3 Terry Reid songs. I picked up the soundtrack and after listening to it ad nauseum for weeks,I decided to try to find some Terry Reid stuff. Boy am I glad I did! "Seed of Memory" has not left my CD player since I got it. EVERY SONG IS GOOD. There is not one song on this CD that I skip over. I play it over and over and over again obsessively. I just wish I was around when his music came out initially. I'm 29 and "Seed of Memory" was released the same year I was born (1976....a GREAT year!LOL!). Why can't today's music sound as cool as this?

The Voice that Got Away.......2007-01-16
I haven't bought this CD because I already have the original LPs. The Superlungs LP is an incredible thing. There really isn't anything else quite like it. Terry's voice is amazing. On "Rich Kid Blues", "Mayfly", and especially "Stay With Me Baby," he puts out so much feeling that you wonder how he can even finish the song. I must have listened to these songs hundreds of times, and they still raise goosebumps.
People have complained about Mickey Most's production and recording, and I can certainly understand that--it's far from clean and pretty, but I actually think it adds to the music. Everybody plays with enormous passion, and the raw edge to the sound when it's burning matches perfectly Reid's gut-wrenching turn. It reminds me of Jeff Beck's Beckola, which Most also produced. There, too, the rawness of the sound on a cut like "Rice Pudding" fits the material. Now there's a combination that should have been--Jeff Beck and Terry Reid in 1971.
As other people have observed, Reid was offered the lead singer position in Led Zepplin, and listening to this recording, one can only think what a shame he had to turn it down. He is a vastly more powerful singer thhan Robert Plant, with a far greater emotional range (greater than anyone I've ever heard). But at least we have this amazing recording to offset what might have been. Highly recommended.
Little guy, big voice.......2006-09-13
I became enchanted with Reid after seeing him on tour with the Stones and Cream so long ago and bought his first two US releases ASAP. I was pleased to see that this cd contains the best of those two LPs. Caution: Many of the songs still suffer from the same bad engineering and production that haunted the original albums. However, the unbridled enthusiasm and unrestrained emotion that pours from Terry's vocal performances remains intact. The 2 acoustic ballads, "July" and "May Fly," are still incredible to hear. You simply have to experience them to know what I mean. The power ballads like "Stay with me Baby," "Something's gotten hold of my heart," and "Rich Kid's Blues" are still thrilling with their punch and dynamics. The great rockers are "Speak Now," "Without Expression," "Highway 61 Revisited" (Where Terry takes huge liberties with Dylan's lyrics), "Tinker Tailor" and the surprising "Bang, Bang." The previously unreleased cuts are okay, with "Penny" being the most interesting although I recall it worked much more effectively in concert. All in all I prefer Reid's early over-the-top, frantic, out-of-control vocal style to his later, more mellow approach that he turned to on "River" and "Seeds of Memory" although I realize that these songs may put some folk off with its demo-quality sound. But all would be compelled to admit that Terry was definitely a unique, one-of-a-kind artist that deserves his cubbyhole in rock and roll history.
The man was offered the lead singing job in Led Zeppellin before Plant, How bad can he be?.......2006-01-14
Really this is a pretty good album. It has all the markings of white boy blues. He's got a set of superlungs and knows how to use them. He's also a pretty good guitar player. The most interesting aspect to this CD is that you'll recognize a number of the songs. I own other Terry Reid CDs and really like them but their more acoustic and less blues. This is a charged up CD with some killer songs. So killer that other bands recorded them and made them famous. Poor Mr. Reid has been ignored for to long. Go ahead and give the man some recogniztion: buy the album.
The Man Who Was Offered the Lead Vocal Chores in Led Zeppelin Before Robert Plant Got the Job.......2005-12-29
Somehow Amazon deleted my previous review showering accolades on Terry Reid's Superlungs. I don't have time to type it all in again. Great CD! Amazing, blue-eyed soul vocalist. Terry's music spans a wide range of styles, it's hard to pin down... Think Robert Plant meets Traffic. Superlungs is well worth your hard earned pennies. Hear the man who, because he was under contract to the ego-mad Mickie Most, had to turn down the lead vocal chores for Led Zeppelin and later and offer to join Deep Purple Mk II! Buy it! Find out why Aretha Franklin once said "There's only three things happening in Britain, The Beatles, The Stones, and Terry Reid". In fact, when Reid had to turn down Jimmy Page's offer he referred him to Robert Plant and John Bonham who had backed him up when they were members of The Band of Joy.
Sadly Reid's manager was an idiot who stifled his career. Terry is still active today and show up at The Joint in Beverly Hills on Monday nights. Sometimes some of his friends show up to play with him, unknowns like Keith Richard, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant.
what a voice.......2005-11-23
i just recently discovered terry reid from an article with led zeppelins guitarist jimmy page who said he offered the vocal duties to terry reid before robert plant. his voice is equal to plants, he screams, he growls, he soars, and the music is an ecletic blend of the late 1960's. blues ,pop, pscydelic, all a wonderful treat. this man should have been a big star, but for whatever reason stayed on the fringes of pop stardom.

Without Expression defies expression.......2007-01-23
Having only discovered Terry Reid through Nick Lowe's website in the last few weeks makes this a very early reaction to Bang Bang. The track which stands out for me after only a couple of listens is Without Expression. I've only been able to make out a couple of the words in the lyrics. It doesn't matter - the delivery is pure feeling layered with added abandon after an appropriate build up. It just hits the spot! The unadorned guitar, keyboards, 'baroque' bass lines and great drumming underpin an amazing vocal. A new dimension will open up when the lyrics are deciphered but for now, forget the words and go with the flow! Apart from the period production and the slightly obvious intention to produce an arty album, every track is more than worth listening to as described in the first review in this list but for me, Without Expression on its own justifies the purchase.
A great record, by a forgotten genius.......2006-06-16
..
This is one of my favorite records of the late 60's, and I'm pleased to find that it's still in print, and still has admirers. Terry Reid was a singular talent, and I have no idea why he never made the big time.
Looking over the playlist, I can mentally play at least half the tracks, and I haven't listened to the record in a year or more. The loping guitar run that opens "Bang Bang" is unforgettable, and Terry's singing on this great track, as David Kinney remarks nearby, defies description. "Bang bang, she shot me down... bang bang, that awful sound."
See Kinney's fine spotlight review for more details, to which I can only add, "me too". I will comment on the amazing cover photo, which I admire every time I play the record. Perhaps the greatest loss of the passing of LP's was the loss of that foot-square canvas for every record. Of course, most were squandered, but some became small masterpieces. The sweaty speed-desperate intensity of the guy on the left is just astonishing. Terry Reid (center) looks like a slightly-dissolute pre-Raphaelite angel, and the odd man out is the callow blond with a cold-sore. (The sidemen aren't identified here, and my copy is 500 miles away.). The 4" CD square doesn't, and *can't*, have the impact of the LP jacket, so you'll have to take my word for it, this photo is *killer*.... [1]
As is the record. Pity Ammie has no samples. Hunt around. Worth the effort. If "Bang Bang" doesn't blow you away.... well, I'm sorry for you.
[1] See the customer images file -- I uploaded a better-quality cover scan.
Happy listening--

The album rocks and Terry reid is one of the great musical unknowns!.......2006-03-04
I first heard Terry Reid watching the Rob Zomie Movie The Devil's Rejects in early 2005. One scene that featured the opening lines of, To be treated Right from the album Seed of memory - "Oh we are what we are when in danger" was so striking and moved me so much that I ran out and bought the album right after the movie and started tracking down everything I could get my hands of Terry Reid. In my opinion Bang, Bang & Seed of Memory are definately his best albums. His cover of Bang, Bang is an awsome take on the original and a great showcase of his powerful vocal ability. Terry Reid Is truely a rare unknown talent and the person who said "unknowns are unknows for a reason - because they suck" clearly likes ordinary music, or has no idea what he's talking about. If he's unknown now because he sucked, he wouldn never have been asked to be the lead singer of two of the greatest bands of all time - Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. No, terry Reid is definately a very unlucky and hard done by musical genius. Though I do agree that the quality of his recordings is alittle dodgy by today's standards - but hey like someone else mentioned blame Micky Most.
Still kicks ass after 38 years.......2006-02-19
I have not listened to Bang Bang You're Terry Reid since 1971-72. I rediscovered it again and bought the CD and it still rocks better than any new music out there today. I fell in love with his voice all over again. So different. It makes you feel. My favorite song is Loving Time. But Season of the Witch is Awesome and so is Bang Bang. I do admit there are a few songs that I don't care for and don't fit in but on the whole I love it. It's a shame people like him don't make it while other mediocre people do. Who wants to listen to the same thing that everyone listens to. I want to hear something different and if I have to go back to 1968 well then.........He is supposed to have a blues band together with Brian Auger and Mick Taylor. I would look forward to hearing that. Terry Reid is a well kept secret that I am glad I know about.
Some Season.......2004-08-25
'Bang Bang','Summertime Blues', & 'Season Of The Witch' are rivettingly delivered by Reid on this disc. Though I agree that the production sound has dated (Micky Most) it doesn't detract from the main event. Personally, I was never as taken by 'Seeds' & 'River' despite the critical raves they attracted at the time of their release. Further, on balance, I believe his re-working of other writer's songs, (and these songs really do come into their own with his readings) is far superior to his own lyric power.

Thanks to R. Cragin for clearing up the tracklist in his scan of the tray cover.
Thankyou Rob Zomie and the Devil's reject's .......2006-05-02
I was introduced to Terry Reid's music through the motion picture "The Devil's Rejects". I had never heard of Terry Reid before watching this movie and from the first lines of "To be Treated Right" I was absolutely entranced by his music, his voice and his tantalising guitar riffs. After buying the soudntrack I went out and bought most of his records. "Super lungs" without a doubt is one of his best. From rare melodies of "Summer sequence" and "Penny" to the more popular melodies of "May Fly" and the rock tracks of "Bang, bang" and super lungs" there are tracks for all moods and CD that never looses its listenability. I am truely grateful to the "Devil's reject's" as I have discovered one of the musical greats.
Definately buy this album!!!
So glad I bought this.......2006-02-27
His excellent first two US albums plus all sorts of previously unreleased studio versions of many GREAT songs. He is truly one of THE greatest singers in rock n roll. Do yourself a favor and buy this. He's a genius.
OUTSTANDING!!.......2006-01-31
I had never heard of Terry Reid until I read a review of this cd in Blender magazine. I listened to samples and was interested enough to buy it. It was an excellent decision! Terry Reid deserved all the fame and fortune he could have ever hoped for. He should be in the Rock Hall! His vocal range simply blows most others away. I love the whole cd, but recommend "superlungs my supergirl", "stay with me baby", "rich kid blues", "zodiac blues", and especially "penny." If that song doesn't move you, please look elsewhere. It's great to discover this as these songs were recorded before I was born(1969). I strongly recommend this to all classic rock fans looking for a fresh sound from the golden era!
Off the beaten path.......2005-03-31
This guy isn't (and wasn't, obviously) for the masses. After seeing him open for both Cream and The Stones back in the 60s I became addicted to both "Bang, Bang" and "Superlungs" lps and found his scratchy, give it all you got every time voice to be powerful and enjoyable. The dude got plenty of exposure as an opening act but that live excitement just never crossed over to the charts with the sparse productions of his songs on vinyl. As talented as little Terry was, he just didn't have "it" (whatever that intangible but elusive personality characteristic may be). But it sure wasn't from lack of effort on his part.

It just wasn't in the cards.......2006-06-10
As I listened to this LP I began to think that astrology must play a part as to whether one makes it in the music biz. And I cannot think of a more blatant example of someone who should have made it big but never did in Terry Reid. Had he accepted Jimmy Page's request to join The Yardbirds (later Led Zepplin) over 35 year years ago, Terry's fortunes (and perhaps the course of Rock music in the 1970's ) might have very well been different. But I guess we'll never know.
Historical.......2006-03-01
I've always liked Terry Reid's music and this is just about the only available documentation of what his live shows must have been like.
If you want to actually *see* Reid playing live, try to find a copy of the DVD 'Groupies'. It's a downbeat documentary about groupies in the early 70s, and the absolute highlight of the disc is the live performances by Reid.
You really can't miss with Terry Reid .......2006-02-27
He's brilliant beyond words. Especially wonderful are Secrets and Hong Kong. The greatest singer ever. Buy this and the rest of his cd's and make yourself happy.

Gee, it's a real shame to have to say this , but , i will. I've been a Reid fan ever since i bought "River", on good old-fashioned vinyl in the early 70's ...."sEED OF mEMORY" is undisputedly , a mega-classic!!!Read the reviews here & decided to buy it...i feel somehow let down ..it's like a Peter Frampton album ..o.k. , but not the Greaaat Terry Reid i know & truly love!!!..Hong Kong being the only track that really hit me!!Come on , Terry, let us have a studio album like "River"/"Seed of " again!!!!!Looking forward to seeing him LIVE, in Manchester this Nov.!!!!!!!!!!Quite a good album, but certainly NOT great!!

Reid Revered Live.......2004-04-26
This is not the place for those new to Reid's music as a start ,"River", "Bang Bang" and "Terry Reid" are the starting points. But for those of us who have followed Reid's musical legacy for the past 35 plus years it is a key element, unlocking many unanswered questions and filling gaps to the pre-River period.
Joining Terry at this point was David Lindley and his contributions are monumental in understanding what could have been had this formation stayed intact post River.
Amazing renditions of the Lindley compostion "C'mon Mary Ann" and the Reid/Lindley performance on "No Good Situation" is nothing less then transcendent.
The big surprise is the encore of "Rich Kids Blues" sandwiched inbetween Bob Dylan's "To Be Alone With You" that ends this historic archival performance.
4 stars due to the recording quality but the performance offsets any of the misgivings of the sound. Amazing what could have been had Lindley stayed the course with Reid and toured behind the River. But that's history and this is what we're left with!
Thanks Water for putting this gem together. Now how about new versions of "Seeds of Memory" and "Rogue Waves" so everyone can enjoy Terry Reid and his recorded legacy! What a voice!!

Terry Reid Fans (& More) ... You Need This CD.......2005-10-23
I originally bought this CD because I was born on the 5th of July
and one of the songs is called The 5th Of July and I sure am glad I did. I knew of Terry through my early days of buying the LP Bang Bang You're Terry Reid. This CD Rocks, I took a chance on it and You Should Too.

AOR/West Coast Music.......2005-07-29
I really like this cd. Terry is a good vocalist & he pours his heart & soul into his music. I would file this into the West Coast/AOR music category. I like Fifth Of July, Drive Pt. 2 & the Gimme Some Lovin' cover. If you listen to Drive Pt. 2 it is the same music as "Last Note Of Freedom" by David Coverdale on the Days Of Thunder Soundtrack. I picked the cd up cheap. If you are an AOR/West Coast/Lite AOR fan pick up this cd, it is really good.
Too great...Too Late.......2003-11-18
Anyone reading this review is probably already familiar with Terry Reid and his loopy career history. Filled with bad luck, bad decisions and any other number of fits and starts, it's a shame that he would release such a cohesive, finished recording at a time that was just too late to do any real good in getting him his much-deserved recognition.
Part of what makes this a better-than-average album (did I say album?) is that some of the songs (Including the title song) are produced by Wunderkind Trevor Horn. This is as polished as anything Reid has done, and he manages it without losing any of the raw vocal power he's shown in the past.
As in his past efforts, the song selection is very good, mixing some of his own works with a couple of cover tunes. He covers The Waterboys' Whole of the Moon and Spencer Davis' Gimme Some Lovin'. These two selections might have been more a labor of love as he barely touched the original arrangements and chose instead to merely punch them up and smooth them out. (not that there's anything wrong with that).
Where he really shines are in songs like Fifth of July and the title tune ,The Driver, which show Reid at his song writing and performing best.I've heard the title tune any number of times and it still manages to raise the hairs on the back of my neck.
I can't say I'd recommend this to someone who is not at least a seasoned listner. It has little if anything in common with "today's" music. But for anyone who has a great appreciation for the wide history and subtle nuance contained in much of rock music, this release holds much to be enjoyed.

What a fantastic recording and remastering job, Donovan's Superlungs should've been a single. Just let your imagine roll hearing Terry as lead singer of Led Zeppelin as originally conceived by Jimmy Page - my lord! Hindsight is 20/20. Anyway, looking forward to future releases by Terry -Rock ON!
Speak Now.......2005-05-04
Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace is one GREAT recording, using open tuning with heavy hammering. Stay With Me Baby is a textbook for vocalists, Hiway61 drives better than Dylan [ but more attention should have paid to the lyrics] -- If Terry Reid had been Zep's vocalist, I'd probably be a Zep fan....
Great voice, not much else........2004-03-02
Great voice, average songs, dreadful production, one good cut: Superlungs. Buy "River" instead.
A little known, underrated gem!.......2003-05-25
Along with English artists like The Move and The Small Faces, Terry Reid was an artist who should have received massive airplay and success in the States, but it was not to be. This album was outstanding for someone so young. His talent and passion could not be held back, even by the absolutely shameful and shoddy production by Mickie Most. After 30 years I still put my vinyl copy on the turntable and play "Speak Now Or Forever Hold Your Peace" as loud as I can take it. Truly one of the great rock songs of any period. If you like the singing of Robert Plant, Steve Marriott, Billy Squier, or younger guys like Chris Robinson of Black Crowes, but like something more sensitive and soulful, give Terry Reid a shot. You won't be disappointed. Thank heavens it's now on CD!!
TERRY REID, ARTIST: THE AMAZING ANGEL WITH GUTS.......2003-03-03
I remember the first time I heard Terry Reid, an acoustic/vocal piece, in the late 60's on an FM radion station of a type that unfortunately no longer exists. I was very moved and knew immediately that I was hearing a very special artist. It was the type of unexpected experience that made the 60's an exciting time. Then when SUPERLUNGS (which contains one of the greatest performances ever recorded in a 'hit song' format) was getting some airplay on AM radio I was thrilled. But at the same time I was amazed that so many people did not seem to to hear that Reid was not just another rock vocalist with chops. This kid was a truly gifted artist capable of taking rock music to a new level. Then SUPERLUNGS and Terry Reid disappeared from the airwaves. And I knew what the reason for this probably was and history has proven my guess correct.
The case of the great Terry Reid is one of the most powerful examples of the fact that capitalism is the enemy of art. It was nothing but miscalculated business interests and decisions (mostly by the self-centered, idiot, producer, Mickie Most) that kept Reid from creating abundant recorded proof that he was the greatest rock vocalist of his generation and probably the greatest, period.
As a singer, Reid is usually classified as 'blue-eyed soul' or 'bluesy', or some such cliche, but these descriptions are shallow and really off the mark. Though Reid's voice often has all the surface characteristics of rock/soul/blues, it has a poetic subtlety and precision that take it beyond the reach of other vocalists. Reid's voice is not just gritty and 'soulful'.
He can dissolve it into a fine, fiery spray that somehow remains clear, articulate, and diamond-hard. Or he can reduce it to a dense solidity that somehow remains transparent and flowing. Or he can make it very gentle and yet with an intensity that cuts to the bone. But one of the most amazing things about Reid's voice, which is difficult to describe, is a dramatic, declamatory, poetic quality of a type found in the best of Dylan's vocals. Reid's vocals contain all these elements which made the very best of what rock music had to offer. Reid was not a soul singer or a blues singer, he was a rock singer penetrating frontiers undiscovered before him. And the shame is not that he was not more popular, the best artists are rarely popular, but that, because of business considerations, he was not free to create what he was capable of.
I think it is fairly well-known that Reid was Jimmy Page's first choice for lead singer for the New Yardbirds, later to become Led Zepplin, and that Reid declined. I believe Reid was right in wanting to go solo. He was not only the supreme vocalist, he was also an excellent guitarist and a first-rate songwriter and he was capable of forging a place for himself similar to Dylan's. But whereas producer John Hammond, Sr. gave Dylan virtually whatever his artistic needs required, Mickie Most gave Reid nothing but headaches.
Still I am grateful that this album, TERRY REID, exists. Over thiry years after its release, it is still as fresh and powerful and thrilling and amazing as when I first heard it. GET IT!

Album Description
This limited edition features replica miniature gatefold LP sleeve packaging and two previous unheard bonus tracks ("Anyway" and "Funny"). Terry Reid would probably have been more famous if he hadn't turned down the slot of lead singer for Led Zeppelin in 1968 to pursue his own unique musical path. Featuring David Lindley on guitar, River blends the heavy rock sounds of the early Jeff Beck Group (Truth and Beck-Ola) with the folky vibe of "acoustic" Led Zeppelin (Led Zep III) and Tim Buckley. Terry Reid's highly melodic songwriting and scintillating vocals distinguish him from his peers. Limited edition of 2500. Water. 2006.
