Let it play.......2003-08-21
This album is a great introduction to the man known as the King of the Surf Guitar.
Big, fat, reverb-soaked, machine-gun notes blow out of the speakers letting you know this is no ordinary listening adventure. Dick Dale's music at it's best is more like witnessing a force of nature than just "listening to some tunes". As soon as I heard the intro to "Ring of Fire" to see if it was the Johnny Cash tune I knew I was hooked. Essential listening for anyone needing some music that can turn a mood from bummed to better.
If you like instrumental surf music this is essential, to say the least. If you think of the Beach Boys when you hear the term "surf music" you should buy this album and consider getting out more.
Like a Knife Through a Brick.......2002-09-29
This is SERIOUS guitar work. Mr. Dale takes us though his current stuff and such great work as "Ghost Riders" and "Hava Nagila" in such a fast and hard way as to turn a Sunday driver into a wheelman worthy of anything on Grand Theft Auto 3 (having done this at 120 mph in four states I can attest to it). Buy this and be Petty for a day.
A music lover's treat!.......2000-02-07
You hear his music in movies (too many to mention), hockey games (Colorado Avalanche), and even in theme parks (Space Mountain in Disney), but it does not compare to owning this album on your own. It starts with "Scalped", a fast thrash of the guitar, you quickly get into the groove with this song. It moves on to other fast tunes that leave you breathless. "Ghostriders in the Sky" is incredible and is my favorite song. I highly recommend this to any music lover.
The Man is like a Fine Wine. He just gets better with time........1999-02-18
Dick is a modest man. He just plugs in his axe and goes. While others are trying to hype themselves into immaculate conception, Dick Dale looks down to them, saying,"You call that thrashing?!" When I first played the CD and heard the tribal chants, I knew I was in for a ride.
This CD isn't just a wave-riding piece of plastic. It's a Tsunami!
His version of Hava Nagila is the coolest!

Steve Bernstein- Surprising but always satisfying.......2007-01-28
Steve Bernstein's inspiration for the MTO came about in 1995, when he was hired as a consultant for Robert Altman's film 'Kansas City.' In order to assure the authenticity of the music in the jazz-based film, the trumpeter immersed himself in hour-after-hour of listening to old 78 RPM recordings from the late '20s and early '30s and it was this process that inspired him to, as he puts it, 'bring this music back to life.'
Formed in 1999, the MTO has never had a formal rehearsal. Instead, as the nine-piece outfit has gigged regularly, they learn tunes and hone their modern-retro-vibe onstage in front of audiences that run the gamut from 20-something hipsters to grandmas who have a different appreciation for what was once the popular music of its day.
Featuring bass, drums, violin, trombone, trumpet, guitar/banjo, and a trio of reeds that encompasses clarinet, tenor, soprano and baritone saxophones, the group's recording debut, 'MTO Volume 1' on Sunnyside was recorded live in the studio.
Juxtaposing tunes from yesteryear with decidedly more modern fare, it becomes clear from the opening swing of the old-time tune 'Boy in the Boat' that this is a debut that is long overdue.
'Toby' is another blast from the past that also swings mightily while contemporary tunes like Prince's 'Darling Nikki' and Stevie Wonder's 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered' (which features an outstanding guest appearance by Doug Wamble on guitar and vocals), both benefit greatly from being filtered through Bernstein's backward looking glass.
Elsewhere the gentle, rollicking swing of 'Pennies From Heaven' provides an ideal backdrop for guitarist Matt Munisteri's vocals; 'Ripple' evokes a Tin-Pan Alley blues feel; and 'Soul Serenade' struts along imbued with subtle strains of Dixieland.
Mixing a palpable exuberance with virtuosic playing and a true ensemble aesthetic, 'MTO Vol. 1' is a toe-tapping delight whose multi-generational charm will find favor with a wide swath of jazz fanciers.
Hard to regard this as anything more than a novelty disc . . ........2006-09-03
. . . and an often rather annoying one, at that.
A little perspective. In the 20's and 30's, there were jazz bands limited to various parts of the country called "territory bands." Often quite good, though not generally rivaling the best of the big bands, they played around Kansas City and other parts of the Midwest. I'm sure they served an important cultural/musical function during the early years of jazz, helping to spread the jazz message to the hinterlands, developing local talent that later made places like KC (hometown of Charlie Parker) among the most influential jazz centers in America, and providing homegrown, cheap entertainment for depression-era persons starved for distractions from their severe economic hardships.
When Steven Bernstein, leader and trumpet/slide trumpet player, got a call from Robert Altman to listen to music for an upcoming film, Hal Wilner sent him old 78 recordings of these territory bands copied onto cassettes. Bernstein became fascinated not only by the sounds of these early bands, but also by the implied cultural landscape within which they operated.
He decided he would like to try his hand at recreating it. Thus he assembled a group of topnotch downtown NY players--people like Ben Allison (bass), Ben Perowsky (drums), Clark Gayton (trombone), and Doug Wieselman (clarinet, tenor sax), among others--and landed a regular gig first at Tonic and then at the Jazz Standard. Apparently, people responded well to the live shows--crying teen-age girls, smiling grandmothers (according to the liner notes)--and, voila!--this recording was born.
I'm sure this music makes wonderful live listening. It contains, after all, some fine playing, probably a lot of faithfulness to the music of this period without just slavishly reproducing it (I don't know this for sure, having never heard a territory band), and a kind of irreducible jauntiness.
But what's the point? Is this a kind of reverse osmosis moldy fig move (moldy figs being persons who protested at the advent of bebop that swing was the only authentic jazz)? I mean, is the idea to play music so unhip that it gains hipness by its very unhip obtuseness?
I don't mean to be unkind, but I just don't get it.
For me, Steven Bernstein is one of those hit-and-miss artists: some of his projects are wildly successful (e.g., Diaspora Hollywood), and some clunkers (Sex Mob). I'd put this one in the latter category.
One final observation. I venture to say that few people will regard this as their favorite project featuring Ben Allison, Ben Perowsky, Clark Gayton, and Doug Wieselman. In fact, it strikes me as almost a colossal waste of talent. Couldn't musicians of this caliber have been given the opportunity to play music conceptually more daring and congenial? One would think so.
Now THAT would be a band I would like to hear.
BEST ALBUM EVER!!!!!.......2006-08-04
A must-have for jazz lovers! Slide trumpeter and jazz bandleader Steven Bernstein's music is characterized by energy, exuberance, and passion. In "Darling Nikki," the melody starts quietly, with captivating plucks of the violin, then builds into a jazz explosion of horn harmonies and pounding drums. "Pennies from Heaven," "Cry Baby Cry," and "Happy Hour Blues" stretches music in new directions, taking the listener to new heights of pleasure.
This is one album I can listen to over and over again!!!

Album Description
2007 release from the Norwegian/British Hard Rockers Described by new vocalist Tony Mills (formerly of Shy) as "very diverse, with radio friendly tracks as well as the heavier side of life, some swing and some atmospherics. It has all the diversities that I personally had hoped for, with the balls of TNT and the elegance of QUEEN and the post-perspective of various '70s production attitudes." New Territory was produced by H.P. Gundersen. Bonnier.
Customer Reviews:
Still Good.......2007-07-16
I was really curious, like everyone else, how this band was gonna sound w/o Tony Harnell. Well, the band is still good. The songs are catchy with great guitar work as usual. The vocals aren't quite as strong and dont have the presence of a Tony Harnell. At times, Mills does sound like Harnell, but his voice isnt as strong and demanding like Harnells is. So the band does sound different, a bit softer maybe, but it's still good. Mills has a decent voice, nothing spectacular imo, and it may take a few spins to get used to it., but the songs and the band are still good and its a good album!
Missing something...........2007-05-30
I was really excited to see that TNT had a new cd on the way and was curious as to how life would be without Tony Harnell.Well, after hearing The New Territory I'm not sure where they are going. I wanted to like this one, really, but after hearing them thru the years, and then listening to this latest effort,I was somewhat disappointed. But I guess that the bar was raised so high on My Religion and the follow up "All The Way To The Sun",that there was only one way to go from there. It's not that it's THAT bad, there is just nothing remotely close to their previous offerings on this cd.Maybe a reunion with Harnell is in the future to return this once mighty band back to their hallowed status among the top Melodic rock groups of our time. Good luck guys.

Great compilation of hot '20s bands.......2005-11-29
I bought this CD a few weeks ago specifically for the two Paul Tremaine recordings. I just can't get enough of his band's "Aristocratic Stomp" with the hot *harp* solo (you have to hear it to believe it!). However, I was pleasantly surprised with the other selections on this disc as well. I'm a fan and collector of 1920s jazz and dance bands, but I wasn't expecting much from such names as Kay Kyser or the lesser-known bandleaders on this disc. Let me just say that you wouldn't recognize Kay Kyser from his recordings on this CD! All of the bands play with plenty of pep and the compilation presents a nice sampling. If you like 1920s jazz and dance bands, I'm sure you'll enjoy this. Yes, it's a CD-R, but it does come with a nicely annotated booklet by Warren Vaché, Sr., and the sound quality is excellent. Highly recommended!
Great dance music from the twenties.......2005-06-17
I love this stuff! Before the crash of 1929 put 90% of the musicians in this country out of business (100 million records were sold in 1927; it was down to 6 million by 1932), American pop/jazz was the peppiest, most inventive, happiest music on the planet. The whole country was giddy with easy money, fast cars, exciting new inventions, and syncopated music. This is another great issue from the Old Masters company. This company is doing us all a great service by remastering and releasing these. Be sure to grab this before it goes out of print!
All Dance Band Music Was Regional.......2003-12-13
While the late 20's and early 30's yielded some national orchestal artists like Paul Whiteman, Coon-Sanders Nighthawks, Isham Jones and Casa Loma, much of the dance band scene was a regional affair on radio and on records. This album is a nice document of some of these territory bands. Most notable by virtue of later success is Kay Kyser (listen to a very young Sully Mason on vocals). This was produced by TOM on CD-R instead of a commercially pressed CD.

A presto Ronnie .. fatti sentire in musica
Nice to have this cd back in print........2005-08-10
The first time that I heard Ronnie Montrose was on Gamma 3. In fact at the time I didn't even know about the band MONTROSE. Gamma 3 was a nice mix of hard rock and that synthesized sound that was about to emerge in the 80's. On of the songs I always loved on Gamma 3 was CONDITION YELLOW, an instrumental. The song CATSCAN featured here on Territory has that same kind of sound. The rest of the album is a mixture of experiments by Ronnie trying different things. Some songs are very odd (I SPY) and some of the songs are very beautiful (synesthesia-women of Ireland). Not one of Ronnies best but there are enough good tracks to make it worth a listen. If you like songs like CATSCAN and CONDITION YELLOW then you should love Ronnies album SPEED OF SOUND and the work he did with ANTI-M on POSITIVELY NEGATIVE. If you are looking for Rock Candy and Bad Motor Scooter then this album isn't for you. I like it, I own it, I listen to it and this REMASTERED VERSION is pretty good.

Outstanding Trumpet Work.......2004-10-05
As a semi-professional trumpet player, I can't say enough about how good the trumpet work is in this soundtrack. In my opinion, Basil Poledouris' work on this score is every bit as good as the more widely known work of John Williams. The lead trumpet parts consistently sore above the high-C range, yet the sound is smooth and powerful without becoming excessively piercing. The lead player handles the full range of this score with such ease and versatility, the casual listener would probably never realize how high the parts really go.
Basil's opening theme is indeed reminiscent of the U.S. Navy music mentioned by the reviewer from Texas. In fact, the piece he is referring to is called "Fanfare for the Common Man", and it has also been widely used in Olympic settings. Basil's theme begins in a nearly identical fashion, but then changes to soar higher and stronger than the piece it is based on. Basil demonstrates impressive versatility in his writing too by creating soft and tender music (Casey's Family) as well as hard-hitting, high-energy pieces (Compound Assault, Intruder Discovered, etc.) that are driven with riveting percussion work.
Steven Seagal's final song on this soundtrack (After the Train Has Gone) is undoubtedly the most criticized piece of the set, but I'm not sure this criticism is completely deserved. This tune exhibits such a stark contrast in genre from the rest of the soundtrack that it basically strikes the listener as being out of place. Whereas the rest of the tracks are non-vocal orchestral pieces, the final tune sounds more like a southern-style gospel choir tune. But if you are willing to accept this radical change in musical style, the piece is actually well done. It is not the genre of music that I listen to often, but it is as good as most of the other music I have heard in the genre.
Great stuff, cut short.......2003-02-23
It's just a real shame that this soundtrack is way too short, at 28 minutes. It's still worth the asking price that's for sure. Basil Poledouris has created a score that is simultaneously patriotic, powerful and magical. The music accompanying Travis Dane torturing the info out of the 2 ATAC Captains (Access Codes) is way cool and the final fight between Ryback and Penn (Gates of Hell/Penn's Wish) has some too cool cues in there.
Poledouris' score adds so much to the excitement and escapism of the movie that for any serious soundtrack collector to NOT own this would be a crime.
Verase Sarebande really ought to re-release this soundtrack at it's proper length as a helluva lot of music from the film is strangely not included. But this is still one awesome musical score that no action fan should be without. 5/5 no doubt
An ignored Poledouris hit!.......2000-05-19
The score for Under Siege II is ignored by most movie score fans mainly because most of them don't know that there is a score to that movie released. This however is my shortest movie score album yet clocking at 27:43. (Thank goodness I bought it used!) Anyway, it is a great soundtrack even for the short time given. It is missing many great cues from the movie but we have to thank Varese Sarabande for providing what they could for us. (It's expensive! ) Now for the score, the main title is very patriotic and reminds me of the music I saw on T.V. once advertising the U.S. Navy. It is a remarkably patriotic tune using lots of trumpet sound which I like. The rest of the album is fast paced action music with the main theme occurring here and there. Casey's Family however is a quiet cue showing the innocence of his niece in the movie. The use of synthesizers adds to the action and fast pace of the score. Now there is one flaw in this score and it is the song at the very end called After The Train Has Gone. Steven Seagal co-wrote it and did a lame job at it. The music business is one area he should stay away from. The score by Poledouris however is good so there's nothing to worry about. Overall it is a great score usually ignored by most movie score fans. Since it is so short, I personally recommend to buy it used like I did. If you can't find it used, order it through Amazon.com because chances are you won't find it in store anywhere.
Under Siege Deux.......2000-01-30
The Score For Under Siege is a fair and good one. Poledouris uses a blend of a full orchestra and heavy synth music for this album. But a good mix goes great for this score. The first track is a brassy, powerfull patriotic theme. For the rest is a mixture of orchestra and synth.
Mainly the CD is chase music. Which some score fans don't like. But I enjoy most of this CD. The almost powerful victory theme at the end of the CD is great but flawed by a gospel song that Segal even wrote himself. For the exception of this, this CD is worth 4 stars.

Album Description
Chaskinakuy "A Flor de Tierra"
This is music with an "altitude"! Duo Chaskinakuy's long-awaited new recording features 17 stunning instrumental and vocal pieces from high mountain regions in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. Musicians Edmond Badoux, Francy Vidal, and guest artist Daniel Zamalloa chart new territory for Andean music lovers on known, and not-so-known regional instruments. Pipes of feather, flutes of bone, harp, violin, vocals and more, evoke the sounds and images of high plateaus and rural celebrations. CD includes 12-page booklet with notes, song lyrics and instrument photos.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommend.......2004-10-21
My wife and I had the pleasure of seeing Chaskinakuy when they came through our town recently, and it was during the intermission in which we bought their A Flor De Tierra CD. Like the concert, one gets from the CD an education into the different styles of music of the region, the numerous instruments used, the culture of the people and their history. Sometimes when a group focuses in on one aspect, in this case an academic appreciation of Andean music, another aspect may be sacrificed, such as the soul of the music. That couldn't be further from the case with Chaskinakuy. (Why hasn't Microsoft come up with a Quechuan spellchecker yet!!) The music is so rich with feeling and emotion that I literally got goose bumps from hearing them play live, and those bumps haven't receded an iota after continuous playings of A Flor De Tierra. There are 17 numbers on the CD with a total playing time of roughly 52 minutes. I have so many favorite songs on it that it would be fruitless to try to break them all down in this humble attempt at an Amazonian review. All I can say is: buy the CD and I'm sure you'll be magically transported on a serene musical note like I was to the mountains of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador.
Excellent, excellent Andean Music!.......2003-09-02
This CD is by far their best yet! If you have any doubts about good Andean Music, DOUBT NO MORE!! This is worth the buy!
Danielle adds SO MUCH to the group on his Andean violin.
I've seen Chaskinakuy in concert, have talked with them, and have been to one of their workshops. Not only are they accomplished profession Musicians who are dedicated to preserving and educating the Andean culture, but their ATTITUDE is so good: They are all excellent teachers, are gracious, generous, patient, and just very giving people. This is a fine quality to have; one of the finest for professionals.
This CD is exquisitely beautiful. I highly recommend it!!!
Most authentic music outside of the Andes.......2003-05-17
I love this album. It is one of the most authentic performances of Andeam music anywhere. Chaskinakuy plays South American music with a wide number of original Andean instruments. I've seen them in concert! They are talented musicians whose music is heartfelt and true to the original rhythms of villages in the mountains of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. You'll love this album for its beautiful music that will take you to a different world. Highly recommended.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
San Francisco Bay Area performer Alvin Youngblood Hart established his credentials as an acoustic bluesman with his acclaimed 1996 debut, Big Mama's Door. To his credit, he's off in new directions with the first notes of Territory. The western-swing opener "Tallacatcha" lets fans know from the get-go that Hart won't be bound by genre restrictions and, indeed, he explores everything from reggae to rock without ever seeming showy. As Hart's skills expand, so too will the perspectives of his listeners. --Steven Stolder

This follow-up to Hart's 1996 debut, Big Mama's Door, leaves no doubt that the early acclaim the California singer has generated is deserved. Big Mama's Door introduced a player as well versed in the history of the blues as he is with its musicianship, and Territory only reinforces that perception. From the opening strains of "Tallacatcha" to the closing "Underway at Seven," magic flies from his fingertips. It's as if those who've inspired Hart's music are channeling through him to reach a new generation. Whether it's the straight acoustic blues of "Mama Don't Allow" and "John Hardy" or the less-likely "Tallacatcha" (which entwines lap steel, fiddle, and piano into a Western dance-hall tune) and "Just About to Go" (a reggae-like number), this album further cements Hart's place in the upper ranks of contemporary bluesmen. --Alexandra Russell
Customer Reviews:
Lots to like (even some blues).......2006-09-12
When the first song started, I thought I was listening to the wrong disc. "Tallacatcha" is a Texas swing number that's unlike anything heard from Mr. Hart before. Guess it was good to know right up front that this disc is not going to be limited to any style of music, with (of course) blues, acoustic mandolin, accordion waltz (or is it two step?), 70's style electric rock, and ska (yes, ska!) also represented.
That ska song ("Just About to Go") is a lot of fun, but the acoustic blues cuts are still the best songs on the disc, with "Illinois Blues" and "Mama Don't Allow" as exceptional examples. While some songs don't work (most notably the 70's rock inspired "Ice Rose") the disc as a whole successfully weaves a rich textured moody musical/lyrical tapestry.
wonderful choice.......2003-01-05
he is brilliant in any style he plays. what a musician.
Uncharted ...........2002-08-18
Territory is an excursion into Alvin Youngblood Hart's adventure with music. Hart born in Oakland in 1963, uses music to discover the adventures in life and to weave common threads to connect his lifetime and history to the his influences and experiences. Although Hart was raised in Oakland he spent his Summers with his grand parents in the hill country of Northern Mississippi and while there he developed an appreciation for the countryside, learned to ride horses and learned about the diverse musicians and music of the Mississippi Delta. He was introduced to the work such musicians as Charlie Patton, Skip James, Ledbelly and Bukka White. His parents exposed him to the more recent blues of Jimmy Reed, BB King and Jimmy Witherspoon. Growing up in the 60's and 70's he was influenced by Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones.
Alvin Youngblood Hart is an impressive sight. He stands nearly 6'6" and weighs 250. He wears his hair in long dread locks and clothing of choice are flannel shirts and blue jeans. Watching him on stage is a rare treat. He is a skillful musician and vocalist who willingly takes chances and avoids being pigeonholed. How many blues musicians would choose to do a song as Dancing with Tears in My Eyes, composed in the 1920's by song writing team Al Dubin and Joe Burke, who are also known for "Tiptoe through the Tulips?"
Territory is indeed an adventure covering many different song styles and influences from rock to country to folk to blues to psychedelic. This has been a rap against the cd by those who would choose that Hart be pigeonholed into only doing acoustic blues which he did so eloquently on Big Mama's Door. Thankfully he is willing to take chances and has presented us with this album which is expanding and enlightening to the listener.
Territory is a mixture of original songs, Tallacatcha, Ouachita Run, Sallie Queen of the Pines, Countrycide, Just About to Go, Underway at Seven, Traditional Blues songs, Mama Don't Allow, John Hardy and Skip James' Illinois Blues, and psychedelic, Captain Beefheart's Ice Rose.
The cd would be worth the price for the haunting song set in minor keys, Countrycide. Countrycide is a story of how Charlie and Ed Brown "used the injustice system to their complete disadvantage."
The song starts :
"We have seen some dark days in the history of man
Tell you bout Saint Patrick day when the stuff hit the fan."
and finishes
"We have seen some dark days in the history of man
Broken hearts, stolen lives and tales of stolen land."
The cd gets underway with Tallacatcha an original which the listener might want to foxtrot to. Alvin plays both lap steel and electric guitar on this and is accompanied by piano, fiddle and bass. Tallacatcha is a Choctaw word meaning "river of pearl." Hart sings, "Everyone knows her name ain't Rose, They all call her Tallacatcha."
The cd ends with Underway at Seven, which is an instrumental with echoes of the Rolling Stones. Hart works solo, once more playing the lap steel and electric guitar. It is a fitting end to the album, a sleepy slow song with beautiful notes leisurely weaving throughout.
Tallacatcha is the best.......2000-09-21
I found Territory first and bought Big Mama's Door because I liked Territory so well.
There's nothing better than Tallacatcha.
