Don't let that classical-guitar-ish opening to "Fight Fire with Fire" fool you--Ride the Lightning packs a heavy-metal wallop. While not as ambitious as the subsequent Master of Puppets, this early Metallica album is indubitably one of their best. Thematically, it explores death and dying from myriad points of view: nuclear war ("Fight Fire with Fire"), electric-chair execution (the title track), and drowning ("Trapped Under Ice"). Interestingly, the best track on this album is probably "Fade to Black," a slower, more introspective song about suicide. There's also "Creeping Death," which remains a concert favorite. An excellent mix of rapid-fire guitar riffs, rip-roaring solos, and singer James Hetfield's trademark growl, this is thrash metal at its finest. Very highly recommended. --Genevieve Williams

A gem!.......2007-07-21

This album is, hands down, one of the best albums ever produced IMHO. Every song has its story and even though they are all different they are all powerful. I fail to see, hear, or feel any weakness in this album; it is a complete work of art. The only other albums that come close to this one are Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and The Beatle's Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band; the comparison of this album to these two speaks for itself. A real gem.

great second album..a masterpiece.......2007-07-15

This album has been one of my favorites for years. I became a fan of Metallica back in late 1989. I had always heard of them and knew of them as heavy metal. I was always up for hearing something heavy and this album surely delivers.

Fight Fire With Fire starts out like a nice classical piece with what sounds like three guitars. It's a sweet melody that fades away into a nice rising note that crashes into the riff. This song is fast and heavy and really distills war into its first line: Do unto others as they've done to you/ But what the hell is this world coming to? It ends with furious riffing and a giant explosion sound effect. And even before that fades away Ride the Lightning starts up. This is a great song with a fairly simple structure that the next few albums would make more difficult to play but more fun to listen to.

For Whom the Bell Tolls, while not a hit, is still played by many rock stations and has become a live staple. It's a great song with one of the best riffs ever written. Fade to Black starts out nice and slow and has a nice heavy chorus. This is the beginning of their progression from the standard thrash that was so prevalent on their first album. It's too bad for all the fans who think they sold out with the black album when on this album they were doing the exact same thing!! It's just that on later albums they took it a step further.

Trapped Under Ice is a nice short 4 minute thrasher that never really lets up. It's a bit of weak song compared to the rest, but a good song for head banging. Escape is probably the worst song they ever did (and the St Anger album) and the writing is a bit amateurish here. I didn't know at first why I didn't like this but i guess its the backing vocals that make it sound like a pop song. UGH!

To make up for this bad song the very next song, Creeping Death, is my very favorite track. This is pretty much about the killing of the first born as told in Exodus 22 I believe. This is a nice high energy song that's all the more powerful when played live. A note here, the best live version of this is from Tushino Airfield in Russia from September 1991. It's available on the Sad But True CD single I believe.

The Call of Ktulu is a great Cliff Burton instrumental that starts nice and quiet and builds to a big heavy song. I always liked this thing and the ending is always sweet and a great way to finish off this amazing album.

So this is 5 stars. Without question!

Some of their best work (pre-sellout).......2007-07-10

I do own this album. I bought it on CD and cassette back when they were released. And to this day, this is one of their best albums. It's just too bad that they they all had to turn into a bunch of a-holes and sign on to be monkey boys for the RIAA, suing children and P2P networks.

Ride the Lightning with Metallica.......2007-07-09

For sheer metal mayhem, there are fewer CDs available that are better than this one. Ride the Lightning features some of the finest Metallica material they produced. From Creeping Death to For Whom the Bell Tolls, this is a CD not to be missed. A five star metal masterpiece.

I bought this CD to use in my classroom as listening examples. I'm not just a super big fan of some of the performances, but they are all good and for the price you can't beat it. That's why I gave it 5 stars. It's worth more than it costs by far.

This is a who's-who of great pieces of music you have heard all of your life, and never knew the names and stories! I listened to it over and over in the car and had my own concert! A friend borrowed it to add music to his Home Movies and it was perfect!

Good Music at a Great Price.......2004-03-06

I bought this CD mostly for "Entry of the Gladiators," which everyone will recognize as classic circus music. The performance on this CD (by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops) is the best available version of Entry of the Gladiators. The rest of the CD offers mostly excerpts of classical music.

I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection and some were better than others.

This CD is at the top of them all. They may be short, but not that short. Wondrous music.

I can almost guarantee that you will like this music.
Well worth the price!

Good for the novice.......2002-06-08

The recordings on this disc are pretty good. However, the editors selected only the *loud* parts, as indicated by the title. I was pretty disappointed to find that the pieces are, in many cases, edited to reflect the most famous themes, etc, instead of including the whole work. In general, I would recommend this to the classical music novice, or someone who wants to expand their knowledge of classical music in general. Those who already are familiar with these pieces will probably feel gypped.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

This is one of my favorite CD's in my collection. It has some of my favorite symphonic songs. This CD was the biggining of my brass CD collection and has the best collection of bombastic songs on the market.

It's certainly not the most comprehensive collection of "thunderous" classical music-- TimeLife's "Classical Thunder" comes close-- but for this price, it's a no-commitment CD. You can stick the CD in, not know the names of the pieces, enjoy the brilliance, and match which movie trailers have used which tracks.

the influence of Big Youth has been far and wide in both reggae and punk music. he is often thought of as one of the most influential toasters and an innovator of the dub style.
this is a monster of a collection with a whopping 41 tracks spanning (mostly) his early career. every song on here is a classic in it's own right. you can find no wrong here on this set of fine jamaican music. if you are into the styles of U-Roy or I-Roy, then buy this Big Youth 2cd set with confidence and expand your knowledge of this legendary figure. you won't regret it.

Big Youth is one of the most influential artists to ever come from Jamaica; he may be second only to Marley in terms of influence. This is an essential collection for anyone who is into Reggae. This 2-disc set explores some of Big Youth's best early work. The first disc contains some excellent work,especially from the album "Screaming Target" which was possibly the most important and influential record for a few London youths in the 70s that went on to form a band you may have heard of...The Clash. The second disc contains several tracks from Youth's best album, Natty Cultural Dread, which I think is only available on vinyl (but I am really not sure).

Big Youth is one of the most influential artists for the early punk movement AND for hip-hop. This 2-disc set is a perfect introduction to this essential reggae toaster.

I own multiple recordings of most of the works on Georg Solti's Thunder & Lightning, but I always hold this collection as my reference. Not only with his beloved Chicago Symphony Orchestra, but several other world class ensembles, the Maestro shows his monumental interperative talents to make old warhorses sound as if we've never heard them before. He could inspire an orchestra to "open the heavens or open a flower" with his baton. His presence is missed, but his work is forever.

If you wish to relax using this CD set after work, you are buying the wrong album. But, if you MUST drive between one and six in the morning, this set, by repeating all just once, can keep you awake on the road, however boring it is. Trust me, TRUST SOLTI!

Solti shows here why he is one of the best interpreters of classical music. while conducting Wagner is his best work, here he shows that he can interpret well just about any composer. also, in this 2-disc set, there is a nice wide range of music, so for those who are just getting into classical music, this is a good place to start.

If there was ever any question as to whether punk is dead, this is your answer. Praise be to god! It's dead as a door nail and as alive and kicking as you ever wanted. Or never wanted.

I am still befuddled by the idea that this is only a duo. A DUO. Two men. One with a bass guitar, one with a (rather small) drum kit. I can confirm this with first hand experience, I've seen them twice. I don't even begin to understand how they manage to get the sounds that they do, simultaneous driving/driven bass lines (by Brian Gibson) and feed back and some effect that sounds like a heavily distorted violin, not to mention drummer Brian Chippendale's inaudibly screamed vocals that at times sound like a screeching monkey from hell and at others are almost intelligible, nor to mention the most lightning paced drumming I've ever heard that can still be considered playing (I don't think he misses a beat. Literally), nor the way that together they can instantaneously erupt into blasts and bolts of sheer noise and then back again into complex rhythms, some of which border on being loops.

I've never been a fan of "noise rock," and really it would be unfair to try to squeeze these guys into that category. The drumming is truly some of the best I've heard, the bass is at times hypnotizing, at others like a sonic car crash. It would also be unfair to call them metal; beyond being heavy and harsh, the sound here is about as close to "metal" as it is close to jazz. Or maybe it's art, but in that case I'm not really sure what it is that they're trying to say, and they're not pretentious (I met bassist Brian Gibson after a show, and he seemed the amicable sort, if not a bit drunk and/or tired). Maybe it's anarchy, but in that case there's order and beauty even at the heart of chaos.

I saw them a few weeks ago at an underground noise and death metal show in a warehouse here in Providence, and where the other bands only had the handful of two percenters thrashing about, and where the others only manage to inflict a moderate level of deafness on their listeners, Lightning Bolt had at least 75% of the audience whipped into a sweating, stomping, jumping frenzy-- to wander too close to the pit (at the heart of which the duo invariably plays) meant being sucked in and, possibly, risking your life if you aren't ready-- and almost 36 hours later my ears were still ringing. There's little doubt in my mind that I suffer a terminal deafness as punishment for not bringing earplugs. The energy in their tracks (umm... "songs"? I don't think so) is down right primal and urges the listener/audience to just completely let go... something that I wouldn't altogether suggest if you do manage to get to one of their shows, and yet something that I found to be almost unavoidable. Brian The Drummer plays with something that looks like a home made balaclava covering his face, with random tufts of hair sticking out, but this is more a matter of function than it is a fashion statement, so far as I can figure, since his microphone is sewn directly into the mask. The mic's cord leads to a small box of knobs and buttons and things, the nature of which I'm not entirely certain, which he manages to twiddle intermittently with his drumming. I'm assuming this is how he manages to sometimes sound like that Hell's Monkey. The energy is non-stop, despite plaing for three-plus hours.
But it's really their placement at the heart of the mosh pit, without a main stage, that really defines their performance and who they are-- at once putting themselves on the same level as the audience and saying that it's about the music and the energy, and not the performance and image. These aren't scenesters or hipster looking to be noticed, and that's almost the most important aspect of this music.

For a two man band, there's a lot to get through here. One or two listenings just isn't going to cut it, and for those of you who prefer to get your kicks on the "alternative" radio stations, with all of their "indie" bands (I don't even know how you'd have sstumbled way down here!), I honestly wouldn't even begin to try. This ain't for the faint of heart.

Think Philip Glass on crack. Think Can with more to get off their chests. Think _Modern Painters Magazine_ singing high praises (yes, it's true). Think Sonic Youth with more energy, more noise, more distortion, and more feed back had they kept going in the direction they started off in in the '80s. Think jumping out of a prop plane at cruising altitude with no parachute and somehow surviving, only with a bit more adrenaline. Think if all of these things got together and had an orgy and somehow in the middle of it a baby was born, now think that the baby had a secret evil twin that had been locked in a closet all of his life and somehow managed to escape and take over the other baby's life with plans to take over the world with his evil genius.
Yeah, well, if you think about that you're going to be way off point.
In the two months that I've owned this CD, there's hardly been a day that I didn't listen to it at least once. I must be sick.

After their live show, i found their albums............2005-01-14

....to make much more sense. Having had the chance to see them live several times, including a show back in September at the Hook in Brooklyn, I revisited their albums and rediscovered my love for them. I had bought this album and last year's Wonderful Rainbow at the same time, mainly because I admired their Do It Yourself Sensibilty, much the same way I discovered Fugazi back in the day. Honestly, it took me awhile to get into them on CD, wheras their live shows are so immediately amazing. I didn't really see it at first. Their live show is so beautifully raw and honest and intense, and it seemed impossible to capture that on a cd. I kept listening and found myself feeling it more and more. Now, more than a few years later, I still find myself listening to Ride the Skies every week, one of the few albums that has had such staying power. I find their albums much more intricate and emotional than other "noise" bands, although I hate that term. I don't care for the Wolf Eyes and others of similarity. The release they must feel at the creation of this album is incredible, and over the year's I have found this to be their best album, much better than their first album, and Wonderful Rainbow. Also, if unable to catch them live, check out their DVD called The Power of Salad, at least that gives you an idea of what is in store.

Lightning Bolt is so incredibly awesome, words won't do them justice. Really, for anybody who likes pure, untampered noise that has form, meaning, and a purpose, you can't beat Ride The Skies. This is where rock music should be going. This is where punk should have gone. This is bliss. Mmmmmmmmm........

I gave the rave reviews the thumbs up because everything they say is true. The arrangements are intricate, complex and executed with creativity and energy and without flaw. You might like this band, I just didn't like it at all. I like to be entertained by music, whatever the style, and I like it to "speak to the heart" rather than the mind. I prefer a good book or BBC series for intellectual stimulation.

I also get bored of "rock" without lyrics. My reaction was the same when 10 or 15 years ago I purchased Stewart Copeland's solo/instrumental album. It was a yawner. Yeah, there were cool bits and Copeland is an awesome drummer but I had this really "neutral" feeling at the end of both of these recordings like I just came out of a modern art museum and said the word "Interesting..." but didn't expect to ever return.

lightning bolt lives up to it's name.......2003-11-05

I first heard this album in a friend's basement. he said it was grindcore, which i wasnt really into at the time. They ripped into the first song and my jaw hit my stomach. I said "how many people are in this band?" I was even more amazed when he said just TWO! a bass player and a drummer, both uttrly insane at their instruments. At first listen it sounds like a whole bunch of noise with no structure. But when you take a closer listen, you realize how very complex it is. From time signature changes to playing at speeds you can't even air guitar, this album totally blew me away. some of the rythyms are so syncopated it's quite incredible...you can tell these guys probably listen to a lot of freejazz. i can feel the energy flowing from this thing every time i put it in a CD player.

Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellan

Definitly one of my favorite classical CD's....has a bit of everything, and it's all extremely well played and recognizable. I never go on car trips without it with me. If you buy only one classic CD (set), THIS IS IT!
