5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

2 out of 5 stars Here's Where The Wine Starts To Go Bad..........2006-07-25

What happened? "First Glance" gave us a fresh taste of a more aggressive April Wine, "Harder...Faster" improved on that formula, and "Nature Of The Beast" was the best vintage of Wine yet. "Power Play" not only knocked the momentum out of April Wine's upward growth, it disappointed a lot of their fan base. For a band that once declared "I Like To Rock," the performances here suggest otherwise. "Enough Is Enough," the first single, is a nice attempt to regain some radio airplay, but after that, the album is littered with unmemorable tunes. In addition to the band's tepid performance on "Power Play," Goodwyn sounds like he's run out of ideas lyrically, to the point where the band's second single, "If You See Kay" gained more notority from what the title sounded like (say it real fast) instead of the song itself. And that's sad, because April Wine was on their way to becoming more successful than they turned out to be. This album was the reason they never got there.

2 out of 5 stars Two good tracks, two medium, rest - filler.......2005-01-12

This was definitely a disappointment for the fans - after two really good records they got this piece of ... hmm ... vinyl. "Anything You Got..." is great fast number. "If You See Kay" is original and very entertaining - an attentive listener will surely immediately notice the naughty wordplay but even without it the song is catchy and extremely listenable. But that's where the fun stops. "Enough is Enough" is decent rocker and "Waiting on a Miracle" is more or less OK but the rest is pretty uninspired.

5 out of 5 stars As good as Nature of the Beast!.......2004-09-07

Sadly April Wine's follow up to The Nature of the Beast, 1982's Power Play is only available as an important. I believe that by 1986 Power Play hadn't even gone gold, but I dont' see why it wouldn't have sold as much as The Nature of The Beast, other than Capitol records lack of promotion. Anyway, Anything YOu Want, and Enough is Enough(the hit single)open the album. Followed by If You See Kay. The quality of the songs is out of this world, I just can't believe that the album bombed. This is much better than a lot of that crap out there today. It's such a crime that this is only available as an important. Capitol should reissue this and make a two for one with The Nature of the Beast album.

5 out of 5 stars Great Early 80's Hard Rock.......2004-05-16

This cd was April Wine's 1982 follow up to their very successful Nature Of The beast cd form 1981. This cd is great, but not quite as awesome as Nature of The Beast. The music is melodic hard rock with 3 electric guitars and great vocals produced by Mike Stone and lead vocalist/guitarist Myles Goodwyn. There are 2 ballads out of the 10 songs on the cd and 8 rockers. The stand out songs are the two hit singles; ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and IF YOU SEE KAY(WHICH CREATED A STIR IN 1982 WHEN PEOPLE TRANSLATED THE TITLE TO A 4 LETTER WORD),RUNNERS IN THE NIGHT,ANYTHING YOU WANT YOU GOT. The songs are not as hard rockin' as there 70's albums, but still sounds pretty good to me.

Honky-tonk crooner Johnny Bush is a country music icon in his home state of Texas; to the rest of the world, he is a minor figure with a couple of charting singles in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As evidenced by the 14 treasures included here, the Lone Star folks know exactly what they're talking about when it comes to Texas honky-tonk. Bush's spectacular, almost operatic voice tears into these tunes as if his life depended on it, imparting them each with a palpable sense of pain and longing. Most of these cuts are from Bush's successful late-1960s tenure with little-known Stop Records, and the arrangements stick mostly to whining fiddles and steel guitar. Bush deserves wider recognition from country music aficionados in general, but if you're going to be a local country legend, Texas is certainly the place to do so. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars A Good album.......2005-11-07

Johnny Bush is probably one of the more "remote" names heard in Country Music......and that is a real shame. He is overshadowed by Ray Price, and I will opine that I think Ray is a far better singer (especially his Cherokee Cowboy days). But, Johnny is an excellent performer and if you like the late Nashville Sound "era" or the later Ray Price, you'll enjoy this album. There are two really fine numbers here: "You Ought to HEar Me Cry" and "Warmth of the Wine". I'd have to say that these two numbers define Johnny Bush's voice and showcase his talent. I admit I was hesitant to buy this CD simply because the label appears to be something from TV's "Kay-Tel" recordings; but this is very well produced and superbly recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Texas Honky Tonk At Its Best.......2003-06-05

All I can say is move over Ray Price!!![.] This collection of Johnny Bush's Greatest Hits puts anything Ray Price has done under the table real fast!!![.] Bush has a voice that is almost beyond belief. As another reviewer has already said there isn't a bad track on this album. It is worth every cent you pay for it. The sound quality on this CD is excellent. If you like good old fashioned country music in the Texas Honky Tonk style, this one is a winner!!![.]

5 out of 5 stars serious honky tonk.......2002-03-16

serious honky tonk fans, you ought to pick this disk up. if you like ray price, webb pierce, faron young, then you'll like this one, and the price is right on.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Bush 14 Greatest Hits.......2001-03-16

I've listened to a lot of country music over the years and owned a lot of albums. 14 Greatest hits is by far the best album I've ever owned. Top to bottom, there's not a bad one in the bunch. Enjoyable for listening, dancing or anything else.

4 out of 5 stars What a Talent!.......2000-07-31

This is a very enjoyable collection of Johnny Bush's recordings. There are a few oversights, like the omission of My Cup Runneth Over and several others, but hearing Bush's astonishing performance on Undo the Right is something not to be missed. Bush was a member of Ray Price's Cherokee Cowboys for a number of years and, like Darrell McCall, is one of his proteges. He learned well from the master, but Bush can be more fearless with a lyric than Price and is willing to go where even Price would fear to tread. And, hey, I'm not even from Texas, but hail from New York!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD compilation featuring DIY punk rock and power pop bands.......2005-05-25

A note of trivia, the artwork cover to this CD release features The Nerves, a band who existed from 1974-1977 and recorded the original version of Hanging On The Telephone later covered by Deborah Harry and Blondie. From left to right you can see Jack Lee, Paul Collins (The Beat) and Peter Case (The Plimsouls). This is one of the greatest CD compilations and is packed with more songs than most standard albums would contain. This is one of the few CDs where you can actually find full songs from The Nerves and this will have to suffice until Paul Collins can re-issue The Nerves to CD and vinyl in 2007. This disc features other legendary bands in addition to The Nerves, including Cheap Trick, Fotomaker, Chris Bell (of Big Star), The Scruffs, The Real Kids, Pezband, Chris Stamey, Artful Dodger and The Flashcubes.

5 out of 5 stars Great primer on 70's power pop.......2003-09-19

Rhino records is a godsend to fans looking to learn more about a musical genre. Every genre they tackle is chronicled lovingly and contains a great mix of obscure gems and popular classics. The D.I.Y. series views late 70's punk-styled music in 9 volumes, separated by region and musical style. There are 4 "pop" collections, 2 each for the U.S. and the U.K. The U.S. collections are less stylistically varied but considerably more fun and tuneful, since British pop often goes over my head (see: XTC, for starters, who I am starting to love). This collection covers the "early" years of US power pop, 1975-1978, which means it misses the Raspberries and Big Star but still gets many of the major players. Very highly recommended, snag this while its around!

Best Tracks:
"Shake Some Action" - Stones meets Beatles anthem. One of the Groovies' best and that's saying something, this has a great chorus and some tidy guitar work.
"Wayside" - Big Star acoustics give way to something that's equal parts power pop, hard rock, and pure genius rock and roll.
"Hit The Floor" - More great guitar and a booming mix make this Earth Quake's best original. The most raw and rocking song here, it's a song just waiting to be discovered by bar bands everywhere.
"Can't Wait" - Why are the Piper CD's out of print? Billy Squier's best work was done with this unknown band, and this track is nearly perfect.
"Blow Yourself Up" - Off-kilter drum work and Tommy Hoehn's alternately strong/shaky voice showcase this shoulda-been-a-classic.
"Why Can't It Be" - The Names are one of the totally unknown bands on this compilation and this was a fine single. Wild drumming and very Eric-Carmen vocals, the liner notes slam the production, but it's great for a 70's indie.
"Come Out And Play" - Cheesy? Yes, but this song has such great hooks that it's a worthy power pop song by anyone's standards. Better than today's teen pop by far.

5 out of 5 stars The Second Best Power Pop Collection Ever.......2000-08-01

Bless Rhino's heart for compiling this gem. Flamin' Groovies, Nerves, Artful Dodger...terrific! But the long lost nugget of this CD is Chris Stamey & the dbs' "Summer Sun". Released as an indie single, it was backed with what I deem the most influential indie pop song of the era, "I Thought You Wanted To Know". Reminiscent of Big Star, this little masterpiece is available only on Vol. II of the American Power Pop series, "Shake It Up", which has been sadly deleted from Rhino's catalog. The #1 best power pop collection of all time, "Vol. II" deserves to see the light of day again. I myself would give just about anything to find a copy...can anybody out there help me out?

5 out of 5 stars Hanging on the CD!!.......1999-05-07

Bravo, Rhino!! That is a huge selection of a very funny times for power pop. It is plenty of jewels and gems (please Rhino, we want a Nerves discography re-edition!) like probably one of the best songs ever made: "I am the Cosmos" of the Big Star most unknown half Chris Bell, or the Flamin' Groovies masterpiece "shake some action" from their self named LP...best recomended!!

3 out of 5 stars Wow - Who'd a thunk it?.......2004-06-20

I found this album's link on a Worst Album Covers site, and upon reading the reviews was shocked to discovered that I know a Playmates song. "Beep Beep" was a standard on Dr. Demento's playlist back in the 70's. That sort of says it all.

1 out of 5 stars Ummmm....what?.......2004-06-16

Good lord... you gotta be kidding me. After listening to a few of the sample cuts on this site, it is no wonder I have never heard of the Playmates. Go buy Freak Out from the Mothers of Invention and save the Playmates for the squares.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2003-11-15

Dude, this is some of the better yet least known 50s music you'll ever find. "What is Love" and "Joanne" are hugely underrated among that genre. Let's not even get into "Beep, Beep" which also is way cool.

4 out of 5 stars Look for the Unexpected.......2003-10-30

The Playmates are, unfortunately, best known for their "hit" Beep Beep. They say in Latin "Non es Disputendum" or there is no arguing about tastes. Well sorry to say that I find "Beep Beep" an insufferably annoying novelty song. So how does a CD featuring a song that I find thoroughly obnoxious earn four stars? That's because if "Beep Beep" is everything bad about an era, the Playmates song "Wait For Me" is everything that's good about their era. "Wait For Me" features lovely vocal harmony and skilled arrangement unheard in today's popular music. Unlike the rediculous "Beep Beep" and it's little mash Rambler challenging a Cadillac, "Wait For Me" tells an intricate and touching tale. Unlike most story telling songs, "Wait for Me" never lets its lyrics interfer with its music. "Wait For Me" alone is worth the price of the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Which Beep Beep Is This?.......2003-10-06

Beep Beep is indeed a classic. Not sure about the rest. Can someone tell me which "Beep Beep" is on this cd? The one I have, on the "Bop Rock'N'Roll" compilation is bowdlerized into being about a limousine and a bubble car. Rather than about a Cadillac and a Nash Rambler! Ruins the whole furschlugginer thing, if you ask me.

5 out of 5 stars Keep on Playing.......2003-11-29

Power-pop hasn't sounded this good in a long time. Not since Matthew Sweet told us about his girlfriend in the mid-90's has something this authentic and energetic been released. Candy Butchers' newest disc, Play With Your Head, will undoubtedly make my year-end top ten list, and it's only January. Front-man Mike Viola got attention for singing in the film That Thing You Do, but his vocals here are more reminiscent of Steven Tyler than Tom Hanks or Joaquim Phoenix. "My Monkey Made A Man Out Of Me" is an ethnic-tinged romp in the sack while the dark Beck-esque "My Heart Isn't In It" fills the post-Midnite Vultures void. "It's A Line" is one of the smarter tracks on the album playing with rock clichés turning "restless thoughts into bad poetry," as "Make No Mistake" and "Call Off The Dogs" shows the more acoustic side to Viola. Hopefully they can get their own club tour going and won't become just another opening act for Lifehouse. Play With Your Head is the first great disc of 2002.

4 out of 5 stars Falling into Place while Playing with your Head.......2003-01-05

Candy Butcher's second outing is a bit darker than the first. No song pops out like "Hills of L.A." from the "Falling Into Place" CD. But the CD does hang together as a cohesive whole. "I'm a mess, let's take a trip to the stip mall," he sings as Viola's guitar insurgently pulses and Mike Levesque pounds the drum skins on "Worry My Dome." Recalling George Harrison, Indian sitars intro the rocker "My Monkey Made a Man Out of Me." It is apparently a tongue-in-cheek celebration of a drug dependence, "I was looking for a cure without a disease." "You Belong to Me Now" slows to midtempo with a bright pop sound & perky melody. "Ruby's Got a Big Idea" hits territory somewhere between "Rocky Racoon" & "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da." "Tough Hang" references George Harrison's "Little Piggies" on a smoking track that seems to be about a guy hanging out with his ex & her new man. The cover art has Mike Viola sitting in a theatre; and on the slow "Baby, It's a Long Way Down" he sings, "In the end it's not how you played; it's what you find while sweeping up the stage." "It's A Line" is an electric rocker that contemplates how time dulls the dreams of younger years. When I first played this CD with my wife in the car, "I Let Her Get Away" came on. When Mike sang, "Looks like one of the seeds I have sown spread inside of her like mold on the cement basement floor where I laid her down," she objected strongly to comparing a baby to mold. The sharpness of the lyric cuts against the pretty pop melody. "My Heart Isn't In It" sounds like a ghostly science fiction theme with a rap chorus and almost works for me when the surf guitar reverbs. The highest achievement, albeit a sometimes difficult one with porno star references contrasted with impotence, is the gorgeous "Make No Mistake" which shows Mike Viola to be a passionate singer, "Fade in your past crashes in waves on the lawn; fade out your last laugh lasts a little too long." The CD concludes with the lullaby, "Call Off the Dogs." "Play With Your Head" challenges the listener. While Viola may not get a gold record with this approach, it is excellent in its reach and inventiveness. U snooze U lose!

4 out of 5 stars Keep the Band Name.......2002-11-22

Even though Mike Viola's name has been taken off the marquee, this so-called group remains a vehicle for his songs, singing, and sonic ideas. And this time he has come up with a much more solid and consistent piece of work than his/their last album. Still rejoicing that the British invaded us back in the Sixties and several times since, Viola has put together a satisfying mix of up-tempo rockers and particularly strong ballads. Viola's hook-laden ditties are filled with clever word play and presented in his attractively raspy voice. There are still a couple of tracks that don't try hard enough and a couple that try too hard, but there's enough good stuff here to make us go back and re-evaluate that first album.

4 out of 5 stars Listen to this album more than once!.......2002-07-31

I admit, I bought this album because the comparisons to Elvis Costello, the Beatles, and Brian Wilson. Basically any album that illicits comparison to Brian I am sure to buy. The first time I listened to this album all the way through I was a little dissappointed. Consistent, yes, but nothing stuck out. The voice (his voice is one that every singer would walk on fire for) immediately impressed, of course, but the songwriting was weaker than expected and the album sounds as if made on a shoestring budget. Not in sound quality, but in that it seems as though he had more costly ideas than his label was willing to give in to. I was reading the next day though and the CD was still in my player, so out of sheer laziness I put it on again. This time the songs stuck. Each track revealed itself to be complex and intelligent, particularly in the lyrics. I would have to say every time I listen it gets better and better. It's also refreshing to hear someone with a retro vibe who does not utterly give into to sixties experimentation and pretensions. I would recommend this to any fan of Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and any modern power pop music.

5 out of 5 stars Cool!.......2002-06-21

I recently saw Mike Viola when he came to Chicago as an opening act for Robyn Hitchcock. I heard the acoustic guitar versions of these songs then, and liked them so much I decided to purchase the album. What a surprise that the songs really rock out with the other two members! My 12 year old was at the concert, and I don't think he was much interested then, but he really digs the album with its harder guitar and bass workouts. Plus, what could be cooler than hearing "I want to kiss a suburban girl" as the opening line of the album.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

5 out of 5 stars Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

Good news and bad news here.

First the bad. The big named songs here, Roomfull of Roses, Almost, and Candy Kisses are all remakes done for Starday and Stop records in the 1970's.

Now the good. This cd is the only available collection of his Stop and Starday recordings. "Lilacs and Fire, and Sounds of Goodbye" were all chart hits for Morgan. The sound is good and Morgan was always a great vocalist.

More bad news, the packaging is generic. You can usually find this cd in a bargain bin or at a gas station.

5 out of 5 stars 14 Greatest Hits ~ George Morgan.......2002-10-31

Great songs by one of the best singers in the history of country music. Candy Kisses,of course is unforgettable. The bulk of his playtime nowadays is from Candy Kisses, but don't forget the others. Room Full of Roses is equal to Jim Reeves, better in my opinion. Precoius Memories, Beyond the Sunset, Hello Darlin', Softly and Tenderly for example have all been done by others. Maybe more recently or better known, but none equal to George.
His voice has a timbre and tone equal to Eddy Arnold, and more than once I have had to wait for a couple of lines to make sure who was singing. I think he deserves to be held in equal standing with the Tennessee Plowboy, and this Album is all the evidence I need to base my stand upon.
The PRICE is more than reasonable and the music is beyond compare. The only reason I didn't buy one right away is because I needed something for my Christmas list.

5 out of 5 stars T of P Horns: the best of the best.......2006-09-06

I used to hang out with these guys in the late 70s S.F. and travelled around the west coast to see their shows. Bruce & Victor Conte were at the top of their game, as was that phenomenal brass section. "Lovin' You Is Gonna See Me Thru" is an excellent cut and of course the title cut is T of P sheer beauty. I highly recommend, if you can get your hands on a copy.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing For Tower.......2001-06-03

Besides the title cut, which is a Tower Of Power classic, there is not much else on this album that will thrill anybody that likes this group. The song "Yin-Yang Thing" is the only other song on here that's really good Tower. "Share My Life" and "Love Bug" are merely ok, and the rest.....pretty awful.

5 out of 5 stars release this you crinimals!.......2004-05-13

the insensativity polygram has displayed in the 'oh so causual' dropping of this; possibly the most needed and best modern collection we have of late starvinsky, borders on crinimal recklesness.
sadly, it used to be EMI that we thought of when it came to tactics like this but polygram is quick on the way to catching up in the reputation of wielding the deletion axe.
too, late straivnsky needs all the friends he can get.
every collection in the world of course had the firebird and one can understand igor's late hatred of it.
when stravinsky went 'serial' protestes of 'sell out' were heard everywhere.
but stravinsky was too much the artist to merely be a follower. his exploration into serial music was much like his exploration into post romanticism; he filtered it through his own artisitc sensabilities.
the huxley memeorial may well be the best late stravinsky and here it is beautiflly played.
knussen obviousely relishes the music and all here give their best.
in a field of very crowded beethoven cycles and mozart concertos we desperately need a great recording like this of stravinsky's most ignored period.
thank you polygram accontants for your depth and understanding regarding art.
god, i hate accountants.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Recording! But Dunderheaded DGG Dropped It.......2003-04-24

My title ought really to have trumpeted what a great job Knussen has done in preparing and recording this music. As a composer himself, Knussen has an unusually acute affinity for this literature, which he takes great pains to bring off accurately.

The Flood is more than merely accurate, though; it is here realized as a flowing dramatic narrative. James Wood deserves great credit for expertly preparing the New London Chamber Choir both in this, and in the Requiem Canticles.

The notion of having the voice of God represented by more than one voice singing (and not in unison), inspired related treatment in Wuorinen's Genesis.

The crowning lament in DGG's having dropped this disc, is the Wuorinen Reliquary, built from sketches which Stravinsky left at his death (and what a testimony to an active musical mind, that he was sketching fresh works at such an advanced age). Wuorinen's piece is a fine achievement, a setting for these sketches, the setting itself skilfully woven, largely out of gestures from other serial Stravinsky works.

Write to DGG; tell them they made an artistic mistake in deleting this item from their catalogue.

4 out of 5 stars More please.......2001-06-29

Despite Stravinsky's reputation as a musical giant of the last century, his later serial compositions often don't get the attention they deserve. So this CD is much appreciated. Without going into the virtues of the CD, which I see other reviewers have amply done, I want to make a different point: It's time we had a new recording of Stravinsky's Threni. Many people say that S's Requiem Canticles is his most successful 12-tone composition. I can't agree. Requiem Can. is too much like a series of independent pieces and not enough like a unified composition. Threni, I want to suggest, is his most successful 12-tone piece. Highly unified, the first chord ultimately ushers in the last. It is a sustained meditation highly focused on a single mood space. Requiem Can. is too much like a compilation of pieces which happen to have some serial links to one another.

My point -- my plea -- is this: If there are any conductors out there listening, please consider recording a new performance of Threni. It's long overdue and would be much appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly, one of the best albums I recently purchased!.......2000-07-07

I hadn't heard the requiem canticles since the 1970's on an old recording, so this is quite a treat. Similar things could be said for the other performances. While another equally outstanding performance of the Variations is currently available by Michael Tilson Thomas, this performance is incredible. Even the Wuorinen piece is a delight-it really does sound like late Stravinsky and works well in its own right. All in all, I'm glad I gave in to a whim and purchased this CD.

4 out of 5 stars breathtaking musicianship.......2000-01-17

At last - late Stravinsky played musically by someone who has lived with this style and assimilated it to its very bones! The Requiem Canticles recieve a stunning performance, finely etched and honed, every detail of its magical sound world precisely observed. The bell effects in the Epilogue are breathtaking - you'd rarely get such unanimity of attack and dynamic perfection in a live performance. Strong solo performances too. The recording on the Stravinsky edition (conducted Craft) was always one of the most disappointing with rough choral intonation and a cactus-y recording, so this is doubly welcome.

The revelation on this CD is the recording of 'The Flood', so often regarded as the Cinderella of Stravinsky's dramatic works. Here this strange hybrid casts a spell, the pictorial moments are beautifully etched. The narration is unobtrusive, if a little 'BBC' and redolent of the schoolroom in quality - the Stravinsky recording (which this undoubtedly supercedes)has a starry line up including Laurence Harvey and Elsa Lanchester which is (understandably) superior. Superlative performances of the Variations - and of 'Abraham and Isaac' - a piece I find totally resistable in every way, you may differ. The Wuorinen piece is interesting and well worth hearing, though any composer must suffer in comparison to the trenchancy and individuality of the best of these late works. Buy, and if you are new to these pieces, start with the 'Requiem Canticles'.
