In These Metal Days.......2007-06-11

With this album, Brian Eno left behind pop songwriting to embark upon his "ambient music" period. B&AS makes a wonderful farewell to pop music and stands as his most complete pop album. Although the structure of the original album has been lost with the move to CD format, it is worth remembering that the first 5 songs appeared on side 1 of the album and the remainder on side 2. Viewed from this perspective, it is tempting to relate the title to the album structure: side 1 is wild and manic, while side 2 is calm and melodic. There are parallels in the number of songs and the number of instrumentals. Although Eno never considered hiself a musician, his underrated singing is put to great use on this album, and his songwriting skill is clearly in evidence. Others have given detailed descriptions of the songs, so I will restrict myself to the highlights: the typical lyrical silliness of "Backwater," hearing Kurt Schwitters's infamous "Ur Sonata" -- and more silly lyrics -- on "Kurt's Rejoinder" (presaging Eno's found music experiments of "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts") and the placid beauty of "Spider and I."

Fans of Eno's ambient music will find much to like here and fans who come by way of Roxy Music and/or "Here Come the Warm Jets" will find a quieter, more thoughful and complex album in "Before and After Science." This is music that rewards repeated listening and which, nearly 30 years after its debut, still seems timely and interesting.

four and one half stars........2007-02-25

quirky funk (no one receiving), fingerpoppin' pop (backwater), early leanings toward ambient sounds (energy fools the magician and through hollow lands), and a generous helping of gorgeous slow-tempo numbers have this album from 1977 jumping all over the place, which is fine with me. this is creative music that is easily accessible, completely listenable. "another green world" seems to be the eno album from his song-based (pre-ambient) period that most people latch onto as his masterpiece, but i would argue that "before and after science" gives that outstanding lp a run for its money. great art-rock. highly recommended.

A diamond in the rough of transition.......2006-06-03

Most reviewers have pointed out the presence of upbeat songs, ethereal lyrical explorations, and all out ambience on this album, and it's definitely full of gorgeous examples of all three. Although this is often classified as a transitional album because it houses so many varieties of songs, I think they work stunningly well together; While his first two solo albums are truly wonderful, the constant up-tempo pace was a bit relentless. "Another Green World" introduced the ambience to stunning effect, but I think the amalgamation of each style is fully realized on this album. The styles of song are interspersed just enough to balance the album out, and really "take you places". Plus, the songs in each style on this album can certainly rival the best of Eno's previous three albums: "Backwater" and "kurt's Rejoinder" match any highlight off "Warm Jets" or "Tiger Mountain", while "Here he Comes" and "Spider and I" easily match "Another Green World" in pure ethereal aesthetic. Moreover, everything on this album is quite catchy, and almost certainly mood-inducing. Just get it already!

Man in transition........2005-06-14

Brian Eno's "Before and After Science", his last song-based album until the about-to-be-released (June, 2005) "Another Day on Earth" is in many ways the album you would hope it would be, reflective of his past, pointing in some ways to the future, very much texture-oriented music. On the other hand, while it has its moments, it fails to capture the immediacy of "Here Come the Warm Jets" or the beauty of "Discreet Music", but its still a great listen.

The album is really two sides, the first being more energetic, the second being a bit more ambient in feel. On the first side, there are three things that immediately draw you in-- the first is an overt use of vocal harmonies-- Eno's vocals are almost always in a harmony form with two or three voices singing the line ("No One Receiving", melodic pop song "Here He Comes"). The second is bassist Percy Jones, whose playing on a few of the tracks, in particular "Kurt's Rejoinder", is nothing short of astonishing. The third is the use of space-- look no further than standout "Energy Fools the Magician", where the four piece (Eno, Jones, drummer Phil Collins back when he was a drummer and guitarist Fred Frith) manipulate space as a fifth instrument to amazing effect.

The second side is much more in line with the ambient work of Eno's most recent albums-- a overwhelming feel of haunted ambient with vocals dominates. The entire side is full of fantastic material, from the haunted "Julie With..." to the lyrically brilliant and dark "Spider and I".

Overall, its a rewarding album that finds an artist caught in between forms, but even in transition, his brilliance shines through. Recommended.

Another Eno World.......2005-03-24

The last in Eno's series of quirky, unique albums from the 70's before he moved totally into ambient music and expored his "rock" side only through production of other artists.

Like the titles that came before, Before and After Science finds Eno stringing together a series of offbeat numbers ranging from rock to pop to ambient and everything in between. This record was sequenced with most of the more ambient numbers at the end, unlike Another Green World's free admixture of styles. I personally liked the AGW way better, but fortunately we have the option these days of programming the songs in any order we want, so problem solved.

Eno's star-studded array of collaborators had become as legendary as his skewed sense of pop by this point, with everyone from Phil Manzanera to Phil Collins to Robert Fripp sitting in on this one. They were Eno veterans, but Eno's concurrent interest in German art-rock brings Can's Jaki Liebzeit and Moebius and Roedelius from Cluster to the table on Before and After Science.

My favourite moments: The atmospheric but too-short "Energy Fools the Magician" with the Brand X rhythm section of Percy Jones and Collins, with Fred Frith. The frantic new wave single "King's Lead Hat" (an anagram of Talking Heads) with Fripp. And all of the old "side 2" especially the beautiful "By This River" with Cluster. The piano has haunted me since I first heard it way-back-when, and I enjoy playing it myself. The closing "Spider and I" summons up a massive wall of synths-n-bass, and Eno's resigned vocal is quite fitting as he was about to leave the rock world (as a performer) for a very, very long time.

I have the earlier CD edition and to tell you the truth I don't notice anything radically different about the remaster, so the cheaper original CD might be a good bargain unless you're a real audiophile.

In addition to its message of all-out, headlong surrender to the Gospel, Delirious's first widely accessible album also has just plain old good music. Often described as the "new U2," Delirious's resemblance is not hard to detect. Martin Smith's vocals, like Bono's, are far ranging and have a captivating, heart-wrenching emotionalism. The band as a whole has a kind of reckless innovation that consistently surges into stunning new territory. On King of Fools, for instance, the presence of a violin, a choir, and a Rickenbacker in one song is not an unusual combination, and the use of every kind of guitar in existence seems to be their specialty. Anyone would agree that Delirious is casting a mold of their own. Their hunger for God is strenuous and explores the depths of all struggles: the longing for more of Him and developing the patience to wait, the struggle for belief when "blood rolls down upon our land" and when love spills "down that wooden cross" ("White Ribbon Day"), and the struggle when the gifts He brings "rob [our] innocence" ("King or Cripple"). In every song, the tension eventually culminates in a contemplation of the Cross--as when in "All the Way" Smith erupts, "with you I'm washed as white as the snow and all crimson stain becomes as a shadow"--and the effect is only more stirring. I actually heard this CD from a friend, and I loved the mellow melodies of its music. Very nice buy, and yes, they do sound a lot like U2, just on the calmer side.

Great message, BUT..........2005-03-14

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE Christian rock. In fact, my very first introduction to the genre was a 2 disk set from Delirious. Since then, however, I've also been introduced to Audio Adrenaline, Third Day and DC Talk - among others. While this particular CD is masterfully mixed and the guys are all masters of their instruments, it just lacks the driving force behind the message I've come to appreciate from others. (I often tease my wife - who tends towards the more mellow in music - that she needs to start a support group called, "Headbangers for Christ.")
This is a decent album, (dating myself there), and the rhythmic backdrop of "August 30th" - while initially annoying to me - became strangely soothing and reassuring by the end. There is plenty of good to be said about this disc, but if you tend towards Third Day and AA, this one probably isn't for you.

Who says Christians can't rock?.......2003-04-21

I became a Christian because of music. The people who showed love to me helped, but it was the music, all-encompassing and powerful that made me feel like something important existed beyond myself. Delirious's music was a big part of that.

King of Fools is centered around the complementary themes of doubt and faith, questioning God and redemption. One of the reasons I love this band so much is the fact that they aren't always "happy-clappy" like so many other other worship bands. Their songs are sincere, thoughtful, intelligent, and most of all, powerful. They address issues that anyone with a complex faith has struggled with, and found their faith stronger because of it.

For example, take their single, Deeper, one of my favorite worship songs, and one of the first I learned. It's alternatively questioning, enthusiastic, humble and completely in love with God. From the honesty of "I want to be meeker/But have you seen this old earth? and "I want to go deeper/But is it just a stupid whim?" to "And the wonder of it all is that I'm living just to fall/More in love with you," this song encompasses so many of the emotions inherent in the contemplative Christian life. (Or at least in mine.) Plus, it rocks. Likewise, "White Ribbon Day" expresses many of the same fears, and is particuarly relevant today (although it was released in 1998). I certainly couldn't help but think of Bush's lack of doubt about God's support for the War in Iraq listening to the lyrics "How can it be that God is love?/When blood rolls down upon our land." In all, the song is an insistant call for peace and love, following Jesus's message of loving one's neighbor.

As for music, anyone who thinks Christians are all uptight Republicans who can't rock hasn't listened to Delirious?. Beyond their punkish look, the band can rock with plenty of loud guitars and passionate singing. The music is generally straightforward rock, with a few lovely songs breaking the mold. For example, "What a Friend I've Found" starts as a sparcely arranged, prayer-like song and evolves into a gorgeous gospelly song backed by guitars.

In addition to all this, Delirious? prove you can write a terrific worship song without using the words "Jesus," "Lord" or "God" (in fact, they have several). If you want a Christian band that is just a great band in general, listen to Delirious? They're my favorite Christian band, and one of my favorites overall. As for King of Fools, it's pretty amazing for a debut album.

As expected, a strong album by one of today's best!!.......2002-05-16

Having listened to Delirious for a few years, I expected this album to be a strong one, and I was not disappointed. Overall, about half of the songs are outstanding ("Sanctify", "History Maker", "Deeper", for example), while the rest are all pretty good. The band covers a wide range of musical styles (hard, pop, soft, etc), and they deliver well in each catergory. Although I must admit that I prefer the louder, upbeat songs on this album more so than the slower ones.

I have seen Delirious compared to U2 on numerous occasions, and never agreed with this match. Having listened to this album, I have reconsidered this comparison and think that it does warrant consideration. Some of the songs have a U2 quality, except that Delirious is much more obvious about their faith.

I definitely recommend this album to any CCM fan who does not already own it, especially if you are a Delirious fan. If you are new to CCM, Delirious is a great band to use as a starting point. Musically they are very talented, and lyrically they are powerful.

F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C.!.......2006-02-02

I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.

At LAST the complete series ORIGINAL soundtrack, the wait is over!.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

An EP for the fans.......2006-01-25

The EP. It has been said that in the modern age the EP is more of a marketing tool than anything else but in this case Edguy seem to be using this release as a single that also allows them to clear out some finished tracks that didn't make it to the last album.

So the bad news first. It's more of the same. Which when it comes to Edguy is usually great with me but tracks like Holy Water do tend to drone a little.

The good news is that if your a fan of Edguys last two monumentally great albums then you really need to buy this. Not to mention the smile that will play across your lips when you listen to the last track of this EP and read the lyrics (which are included which is a nice touch for an EP release). I won't spoil it for you by talking any further about it here.

But for the price at the time of writing, any Edguy fan should pick this up.

A great buy........2005-12-23

Ok, so first off....to anyone who rated this album badly because of the words in "New Age Messiah," f*ck you. I know that normally power metal doesn't have much profanity, but that line is hilarious! Tobias is always blaspheming on edguy tracks, because it's really really funny....anyone remember the lyrics, "hallowed be MY name?" Anyway, overall, this EP is a great intro to the full-length and should be bought by everyone, including people who are offended by Edguy blaspheming. period.

Best EP of the Year!.......2004-07-26

People only buy EPs for two reasons. The first is to preview an album that's coming out. The second is for unreleased material. Now, since the album this is foretelling has already come, the only reason to buy it now is for the latter reason. This is in fact, why I bought it(getting it along with Rhapsody's "Dark Secret" ep, $13 for enough music to equal a full album)

The first song is "King of Fools," first single from Hellfire Club and I'd say about the fourth best song on that album, as well as this one. The edit's in this version run smoothly and this song is still as fun to listen to, but you'll probably just skip it if you already have Edguy's full legnth release.

Next is "New Age Messiah." 3rd best song on this album. It has a very nice rythem and, excluding the title track, is the catchiest song on the album. Very nice riffs going on.

Then it's "The Savage Union," 2nd best of the ep. Some fast riffing going on, this song is very close to "We Don't Need a Hero" from Hellfire Club, which is to say, a typical Edguy song. Nothing wrong with that, in my opinion.

Then comes the jewel of this album. "Holy Water" is actually one of the best ballad's I've heard that has come from the past 5 years. Not only are the vocals and playing simply amazing, but the orchestra finds itself in a perfect spot. Not too overpowering so it takes over everything else, but the ambiance it sets in raises the song so much that it would be completely different without it.

Finally, there's "Life and Times of a Bonus Track." It's a fun novelty track, but gets old after hearing it a few times. The straight piano and vocals from Tobi also get kind of boring after a minute. Definently the worst track from the album.

Still, this is possibly the greatest EP/single I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Even if you're not an avid fan of Edguy, it's still something worth checking out.

Great EP, not a Helloween copycat and funny also........2004-03-14

It's a great EP, and an anticipation to the wonderful Hellfire Club (yep, it's way better than the great Mandrake).

Some people complained about the lyrics and the f-words. Others said the lyrics were nu-metal (still trying to figure out where). Finally some people said songs were simple.

I don't agree with these comments. The songs are catchy, melodic and relaxed, and that's great. All we see around are Helloween copycats, bands and fans taking everything too seriously. Come on, metal must have messages, but should also be fun. Edguy always mixed some seriousness with f-words. Vain Glory Opera had already songs with f-word and a punk cover. The live album is great to listen and funny to follow Tobi's interaction with the crowd. Edguy is a unique melodic metal band and by far the best, because they are not like everyone else. Iron Maiden was different from the other bands, Savatage was different, Sepultura and Angra were different.

About the KOF songs, King of Fools is aggressive, catchy, great chorus and a great videoclip (check Nuclear Blast's website). Despite the f*f*Jesus part (didn't like it either), New Messiah is what we expect from Edguy. Singalong melodies, catchy chorus. Savage Union has a longer chorus where you can hum along quite easily and a strategic (well) positioned f-word. Great. Holy Water is different, but it's emotional, somewhat dramatic. Another great chorus (4 in 4 so far). And...song #5, well, the funniest song I've heard in a while. The truth, the f*ing funny truth, all I can say.

Enough said, for those who didn't like King of Fools, Hellfire is quite different. No f-words, lots of aggression, speed, the usual great chorus, the usual Edguy's pussy balad, and the best 70's song written after 1979 (The Piper Never Dies).

king of fools est un tres bon ep, sur 5 pieces 1 seul se retrouve sur le prochain album hellfire club et c'est king of fools,
la piece KING OF FOOLS est totalement superbe avec un refrain accrocheur qui nous reste dans la tete.
NEW AGE MESSIAH est une piece speed a la sauce Edguy avec un bon refrain.
THE SAVAGE UNION est une piece assez rapide sans etre speed qui rappelle Iron maiden
HOLY WATER une piece mid-tempo avec un refrain melodique et de bon arrangement vocaux et orchestraux
LIFE AND TIMES OF A BONUS TRACK se veut un clin d'oeil au bonus track, une piece drole une fois traduite, a decouvrir
ce mini-album nous aident a patienter jusqu'au mois de mars pour la sortie de l'abum hellfire club, qui sera sans aucun doute l'album metal de l'année

A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

Blues Brother Frontman Larry Thurston Returns! Joined by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Legends Levon Helm (drums) and Johnnie Johnson (piano), and an array of world class blues veterans from New York and St. Louis, Larry performs 12 original blues and rhythm and blues by songwriter/producer Jeff Alexander.

Larry does not just sing the songs. Larry lives the songs. Believable and genuine, Larry performs with a combination of intensity, playfulness, and integrity that is uncommon.

A wide range of blues. From old school Chicago and Delta, to Louis Jordan style raps , to rhythm and blues to a uptempo rocker, right on up to a jazz inflected blues.

This is simply a beautiful classy recording by L.Thurston and a number of tremedously gifted musicians, who have created an album with a smooth laid-back feeling, but at the same time edgy, due to the clever lyrics by Jeff Alexander. Great guest appearences by Levon Helm and Johnnie Johnson. You also have to get Johnnie last album "Johnnie be eighty, and stil bad", also with vocals by L.Thurston and songs by J. Alexander.

Superb new blues cd with down to earth lyrics from the heart that anyone can relate to. Larry Thurston's rich, smooth vocals pour the songs out in an easy, comfortable way that made me at home with this cd the first time I heard it. Jeff put together an outstanding group of musicians including Levon Helm, drums, Johnny Johnson, piano, and many more notables. It immediately became a staple in my play list at "The Roadhouse"

Classy blues that is well worth a listen..........2002-12-17

Although Larry Thurston (ex Blues Brothers Band) has essentially retired from performing live, he has not lost his wonderfully rich baritone voice. Thurston takes the lead for producer/songwriter Jeff Alexander's latest blues project, "School For Fools," aided and abetted for the most part by ex-Band drummer Levon Helm.

Thurston's talents as a singer are evident right from the opening "Brokenhearted and Broke". Although the backing musicians may change the quality never wavers throughout. The best tracks are the two where Johnnie Johnson (ex Chuck Berry) guests on piano. The first, "Warning Shot," has a fairly laid back groove, and, with Arno Hecht doing a fine job on sax. The band then up the tempo for "Happy Hour," which is driven along by the neat combination of Johnson and Keith Doder (harp).

"School For Fools" is a very good CD which is packed full of original classy blues tunes. Apparently Jeff Alexander has more blues stuff in the pipeline. If it's half as good as "School For Fools" it will still be worth a listen!

What a cool record! This is the best new blues I have heard in a long time! A great old time sound. Larry Thurston is an amazing singer, and these songs, wow! These are the best blues lyrics to come around in years. I have to admit, I bought the cd because Levon Helm is a featured performer on the recording, and we all know we don't hear enough of Levon any more, but this was a find! I can't say enough about Jeff Alexander's songs. He manges to paint exceptionally vivid lyrical pictures, always in a delivery that is appealing to the ears linguistically and musically.
I can't even pick a favorite song, I love em all! "Happy Hour" is knee slapping funny, and at the same time a song that describes the sanctuary of a great love relationship. Johnnie Johnson gives a real Johnnie Johnson performance, and the song is a rompin, stompin blues. "Gravediggin Man" has a groove that cannot be denied, courtesy of Levon Helm's classic drum sound. It is classic Levon, and classic blues, all at once. "Brokenhearted and Broke" is a good time dancin' blues, absolutely hysterical. We all know that man, and we all know that woman. "My Woman Left Me" is a burner all right, awfully pretty. This one is down and dirty blues, vivid, and not for the faint hearted. "Blues To Go" is brilliant and sounds great, late night west coast blues at it's best. Brilliant lyrics. "Reasons To Love" is a song with a great message, and it is not sappy at all. But is a song that needs to be heard. Brilliant!
If you are a blues lover, or a lover of good intelligent music, this is one cd you have to have in your collection. What I want to know is, why haven't I heard of Jeff Alexander or Larry Thurston before? Where have these guys been hiding?
