Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-01-10

If you are a Roomful of Blues fan -this is a great ablum for your collection. A good mix of swing and traditional blues. May not be as strong on swing blues as some of thier latest recordings, but still very solid.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous music.......2003-12-25

Blues, swing and rock 'n' roll combine for an unbeatable CD. I have to be careful when playing this on the car stereo--I won't hear an ambulance siren even if it's right next to me! "Blind love," "Turn it on, turn it up," "If you know it" and "Marie, Marie" are my favorites because they best feature Sugar Ray Norcia's stunning voice. This CD is great fun. Don't hesitate to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Still a Great Blues Band!.......2003-10-14

These guys still got it. If you don't like Roomful of Blues,
I don't like you!

5 out of 5 stars One of the great Boston area blues bands at its best.......2001-03-14

This is a great CD, lots of terrific mainstream blues with plenty of swing thrown in so you can dance to it! I'm ordinarily not a big fan of horn sections, but there's no way you can't love this if you're a blues fan.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best they've recorded.......2000-10-10

Although I'm a Roomful fan who misses the "old crew" (Robillard, Piccolo, Copley, Porky etc...), this CD can still be considered one of Roomful's best ever.

Of note is the lead singer/harp player Sugar Ray Norcia. His vocals are terrific.

Norcia's rendition of Percy Mayfield's "Danger Zone" is .... and I can't believe I'm saying this ... even better -- more soulful than Ray Charles' version. And Charles, in my opinion is about as close to "God" as a Soulman can get!!

Here, "Danger Zone" is THE PERFECT song. The arrangement is the best, done at a PERFECT tempo, sung perfectly. It opens with an unbelievable Bari-Sax solo that is the knife that plunges deep into your heart. Not an easy task with a BARI! Making things worse (or better), Rich Latalle's Alto Sax solo finishes you off by twisting that knife in deeper again, and again. But, somehow, Norcia's vocals are so smooth -- you'll keep comin' back for more! It hurts so good!!

There's a lot more to this CD too -- but, this review would be too long if I continued to describe.

This CD is definately worth getting, even if your an old Roomful purist.

3 out of 5 stars Last and weakest "Montrose" album of the 70's........2005-10-22

When Ronnie Montrose exploded onto the hard rock scene in 1973 with his self-titled debut album/band, he knocked the US hard rock world off its feet. No one really expected such an aggressive band and sound from the ex-Edgar Winter Group guitarist. However, he was unable to take it to the next level. His inability to maintain a steady band line-up and refusal to stick to playing just hard rock frustrated the record company and confused potential fans. After a chaotic 2nd album and the departure of vocalist Sammy Hagar, Montrose reconvened with a new singer and new sound. Their 3rd album, "Warner Brothers Presents Montrose" was much more consistent than "Paper Money" and was a great step in the right direction. However, more line-up changes and a horrible step towards pop music greeted fans who bought 1976's "Jump On It". There are a couple of great songs on here, but much of the rest is wimpy, power ballads or cheesy pop tunes. If you're a new fan looking to find the legend of "Montrose", start with the self-titled debut, then 1975's "WB's Presents". If you like those two, then try "1974's "Paper Money". Buy "Jump On It" last, or maybe not at all. Most of the best "Jump On It" stuff is on the "Best Of Montrose" CD. "Jump On It" was a horrible way to close the door on a classic band.

4 out of 5 stars The best "Sammy-less" Montrose.......2005-03-31

A lot of fans say that this album, and other subsequent Montrose albums, were overlooked because Sammy Hagar left the band. Well, I actually lived through this period - I was 18 when "Jump on It" came out - and trust me: no one didn't buy a Montrose record because Hagar had quit the group. We hardly knew who he was then.

The debut self-titled Montrose album is considered a classic and featured Hagar on lead vocals. The band stumbled through its second release ("Paper Money") with part-time help from Sammy... and then he was gone. The point is, Sammy Hagar was not the icon back then that he is now. He was a good rock singer but when he left Montrose no one batted an eye. If subsequent Montrose albums didn't sell as well as the debut, it is simply because they just didn't have enough quality songs on them.

Bob James was Hagar's replacement... I had never heard of him at the time and haven't heard from since. Nonetheless, he was a fine vocalist -- not as rough and growl-ly as Hagar, but blessed with some nice rock 'n' roll pipes nonetheless.

"Jump On It" is the fourth Montrose album and the second one with James on vocals. And to me, it's the second best Montrose record overall -- after the initial debut album.

The CD opens with "Let's Go," a pulsating, driving rocker that is infectious and features some blistering guitar work from Mr. Montrose. The song begins with a propulsive drum beat and bass line that causes an almost Pavlov-like response in bringing you to your feet. James sings the hell of it. It's one of those perfect summer-time rock songs to play in your car at full volume with the top down! LET'S GO!

The title track is another great rocker, frentic and frantic, with the band playing as tight as they can get.

"Jump On It" also contains some very fine rock ballads. "Music Man" gives me goosebumps, even to this very day... James' plantive vocals ("Let me be your music...man") hit you squrely on the solar plexis. And "Rich Man," written by the late/great Dan Hartman, is just a perfect little piece of pop rock -- somewhat a precursor to what we would hear from Van Halen 10 years later.

Anyway, if you admire the guitar work of Ronnie Montrose, you probably already have the first album. For me, this is the next one you should add to your collection. (Unless you're still hung up on that Sammy Hagar thing.)

4 out of 5 stars NO HAGAR BUT GREAT GUITAR FROM MONTROSE AND CREW.......2002-09-24

A great album frequently overlooked because Sammy Hagar was no longer in the band. However this album is a good rock album from Montrose and finally available as a domestic print cd. Also now available are WB presents and Open Fire, both great albums.

Just get a CD like this one to get a broad brush review of the popular hits of the late 1500s. While I would have liked a few more recorder pieces, almost every cut was interesting in its own way. If you want just one early music CD with English songs, this is probably the one to get.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Compilation of Elizabethan Music.......2001-09-27

"Elizabeth's Music" is a great cd to listen to if you are an enthusiast of ballads, the lute or old fashioned jigs. This cd really puts you in the alehouses, courts and courtyards of the Elizebethan age. The music is preformed well and the voices are very authentic and beautiful. The CD loses one star because most of the songs are on other Dorian-released CDs! I got the cd and found out most of the songs were the exact same ones on my "Shakespeare's Music" CD and other Dorian CDs. Ah well. All Elizabethan enthusiasts will enjoy this eclectic collection.

4 out of 5 stars Light classics with historical charm.......2000-01-07

Really enjoyed this CD. Light and pleasant, without being too pretentious. Great background music for home or office.

Want to see an ideal live setlist? Pick this CD up and read the back cover. "Big 10-Inch Record," "Louie Louie," "Great Balls of Fire," "Please Send Me Someone to Love" and "How Sweet It Is" are all here for the jukebox/olides radio/dj crowd. For the more discerning, "The Last Thing I Needed," "Hoy Hoy Hoy" "Stranger in My Hometown" and "Someday" fill out the bill. For a working musician trying to keep true to his roots while at the same time paying the rent, setlist strategy is a huge part of daily labor. Al Copley, Roomful of Blues co-founder/keyboardist/vocalist, is a working musician, one to take notes from.

He's not a great singer. He's an A- pianist in a world where A+ players often scrape by. His arrangements and sidemen lack the exciting old Roomful touch, which, one gathers from listening to Jump On It, must be credited in large part to Greg Piccolo and other members of that great band. Yet this album stands well on its own, because Copley has good sense. He knows what to do on a bandstand, and he does it well in the studio here. Former partner Greg Piccolo may inject more adrenalin into his opening passages with alto sax, bigger horn sections, more instrumentation and sharper arrangements, but Copley's continuous hammering on listeners' boogie and shag nerves put him in the big leagues. I would not care to follow this man at a festival or package gig, and I don't think Greg Piccolo would, either.

He's also a bit of a romantic with a knack for bouncing the raw, frayed ends of his voice off of sweet piano phrases to express poignancy very well. This is music for shallow shagging and shuffling, but also for nostalgia and turning leaves. This record is an ideal silver wedding anniversary gift. Al Copley is a festival act to hope for and encourage.

Parents of the 1990s will likely recall--either dimly or clearly--the Sugarhill Gang's one megahit, "Rapper's Delight," which helped ignite the hip-hop genre and then largely disappeared. The ensemble, of course, never vanished, but they also never managed to approximate their first success. So here's a theory: the Sugarhill Gang receded only to see the music they helped establish eventually need a social upgrade, a reorienting of its focus to kids. This collection of 10 tunes revives familiar early rap rhythms and grafts them onto new lyrics that encourage children to both enjoy their games and playground activity and intensify their learning. From "ABC's" to "It's Like a Dream Sometimes," the emphasis is on a midtempo rhythm that easily accommodates the child's ear and a smooth, catching lyric that bounces from the alphabet to dinner to a game of tag. The music is decidedly more simple than much hip-hop, replacing the sometimes frenetic array of samples with a sleek, clean bass and a percussion line that really gets its fuel from the vocals. There's even "Kids' Rapper's Delight" and much more. Historians will look back at early rap as a kind of urban folklore, and here Sugarhill Gang adds the educational touch of other kid-centric folks like Ella Jenkins. --Andrew Bartlett
