This best-of is loaded with the usual smash suspects plus three new cuts--the sub-Mellancamp "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night," the Bed of Roses-style ballad single "Always," and a low-key remake of "Living On A Prayer" titled "Prayer '94." Love 'em or not, there's no denying the loyalty of the fans. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
Decent Start...but hopefully a better one will come along.......2007-07-10
As far as greatest hits by the band, this I believe is the first one of studio cuts anyway. I saw this one in the Spring in the top Ten at Amazon, and was wondering why all the sudden interest in Bon Jovi, of course they did just come out with a new CD, and the new stuff is pretty good, me myself recently got the Remasters of their first 3 or 4 Cd's, and I admit that "Keep The Faith" was the last one I bought...But I did get the big box set of rarities 100 Million fans can't be wrong, so they are indeed my major rock guilty pleasure.
Is there no "Essential" Bon Jovi yet?, didn't see one...I was hoping for a 2 CD set of their hits along with a few deeper album cuts by now not that I need that, just that it would seem it's time for that since they've been around for 20 plus years now. Hopefully it isn't far off, this band deserves a better career collection than this one, I can't imagine the casual fan wanting this lacking set, even the order is strange. Of course the hardcore Bon Jovi fan likes about every one of their songs, maybe only 4 or 5 from the first album, but even I like most of the songs on 7800 degrees, and an essential would have to have Tokyo Road and Silent Night on it or I would not buy it. As far as Slippery, New Jersey...every song on those should be essential, maybe one or two left off...and that they are not on the greatest hits as this is known, is a major flaw. I'm thinking the ultimate Bon Jovi greatest hits set would have to have at least 4 songs each from the first two CD's, and then maybe 5 or 6 from Slippery, New Jersey, and Keep The Faith? That would fill out 2 Cd's I think and make a nice collection; better than this one for sure.
Hopefully fans new and old will get a better restrospective soon, this one is a nice start I guess, but I would highly recommend checking out their remastered catalog for more hits. They don't have many duds at all at least on their first 4 or 5 Cd's. The late 90's one's I don't know, perhaps an essential collection would contain some newer songs...but classic Bon Jovi is good enough for now.
A great Bon Jovi collection.......2007-06-09
For the most part, this is a great Bon Jovi collection. I do not equally enjoy every song on this album, but this collection includes nearly all of their early hits.
Cross Road.......2007-06-09
I love this CD, it's awesome, the songs are the best. Especially "Always", "Bed of Roses" and "I'll be there for you"
Decent Beginner's Set.......2007-05-22
For people who only know Bon Jovi from their "Have A Nice Day" and beyond years, "Cross Road" is a very good collection of tunes for them to check out. It gives the listener a solid set of their most popular tunes from their hair band heyday before they got all earthy/Mellencampy. This album is by no means a complete gathering of their greatest tunes. It leaves out at least two songs ("Living In Sin" and "Born To Be My Baby") and instead fills those holes with the dismal "Prayer '94," the forgettable "Always" and the harbinger of things to come, "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night." "Someday" is actually a very good modern roots rocker, but people don't buy greatest hits albums for the new songs. People buy this album for songs like the original "Livin' on a Prayer," "Wanted Dead Or Alive," "Bad Medicine," and "I'll Be There For You."
Lesser known tunes from their earliest offerings(particularly "Runaway") signal the beginnings of a great band to come. Later songs such as "Keep The Faith" and "Bed Of Roses" reveal a band in rock decline and quickly headed for the adult contemporary sound. In short, "Crossroad" gives the listener a pretty good take on how a band from Jersey made it big, leveled off, then headed for the sweet and steady success of light rock. Just to shake things up a bit, "Blaze Of Glory" from Jon Bon Jovi's solo "Young Guns II" project is included. Sadly, we do not get a sample from any of Richie Sambora's solo works. He really is a much better guitarist than he's given credit for, and it would have been nice for one of his tunes to be included in this collection.
I grew up during Bon Jovi's prime, and am proud to say that I own original cassette copies of "Slippery When Wet" and "New Jersey." Although they weren't my favorite hair/glam/hard rock band (that was Def Leppard), they were still one of the best around at the time. Bon Jovi is no longer the band they once were, but for people who want to know where they came from, this is the album to pick up.
BON JOVI AT THEIR BEST!!!.......2007-02-17
Words cannot describe how awesome BON JOVI is!!! I am their #1 fan and no other group in this world produces such quality / entertaining / heartfelt music. I RECOMMEND YOU BUY HAVE A NICE DAY and ALL OF THEIR CDs!!!

Justice is the moniker of the Paris-based production duo Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay. Their approach to crazy-quilt dance-pop hybridism is infectious, if a tad off-putting here and there. The duo rose to fame due to an MP3 single and super smart video for the excellent, kiddy-chorused house-pop number "D.A.N.C.E." in 2007, and they soon thereafter signed to the suitably named label Banger. They manage to make really silly and fun music in a way that frequently comes off in a pretentious manner. It's ridiculous to name your album after a symbol, especially if it's . This is not meant derogatorily. Really. Justice does appear to be that rare breed of dance artist equally capable of stimulating the body and the mind, though neither Richard James nor the Basement Jaxx need fear this act. After just one listen to "Waters of Nazareth," it's very difficult to avoid wondering "how the hell did they mix and match noise and pop so beautifully" while also dancing furiously. --Mike McGonigal
Amazon.com
Rarely does a European DJ/dance album hit the U.S. with as full a head of steam as this one, but after the twin jabs of the singles "Never Be Alone" and "Waters of Nazareth," French duo Justice was poised and ready to follow with Cross. As a strong contender for the dance album of 2007, this 12-track debut shows Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé flexing more musical elasticity than the "dance" or "house" tags can possibly convey on their own, never mind the "French Touch" movement with which the pair is loosely and rather reductively associated. Having remixed tracks from artists as dissimilar as Britney Spears and Franz Ferdinand, the pair seems to have been building its chops for exactly this kind of resolutely defiant masterwork. From the relentless, gritty electro-bounce of opener "Genesis" and the stuttering, four-on-the-floor propulsion of "Let There Be Light," to the children's chorus of "D.A.N.C.E." and the rock-indebted "DVNO," Cross starts with a palette of house and disco beats and then throws the kitchen sink at it. The resulting amalgam boasts a tectonic range of reference without ever sacrificing de Rosnay and Augé's slavish devotion to the fine art of the party album. --Jason Kirk
Album Description
Justice's monster beats, massive hooks, thunderous drums, and near-religious determination to demolish dance floors cast them in a light no contemporary can catch. The group's US debut single, "Waters Of Nazareth" arrived in 2006 and solidified their sound: huge slabs of beats, brutal strings, and cathartic release. That record sets the stage for this, their debut full-length, boasting the already ubiquitous disco pop anthem "D.A.N.C.E.", which features the best English children's choir since "Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2".
Customer Reviews:
I am a little dissipoited.......2007-08-01
When I first saw the D.A.N.C.E. music video on DailyMotion I couldn't wait to get my hands on this album. The song just made me want to get up and dance. As soon as I got the disk I started listening to it on my good headphones as to not loose any of the quality but immediately was bothered by the over production of this album. Distortion got in the way of the clean beats and made me worry my headphones were shorting out. Similar techniques were used throughout and although the songs very in speed and tone the beat and craft can be repetitive. I decided to give the album a chance and listened to it more. It did grow om me. Still it is a bit of a disappointment.
Optimus Prime has gas!.......2007-07-27
I got this CD on the strength of "D.A.N.C.E." which to me, sounds like a 70s children's show has dipped it's chocolate into Jamiroquai's peanut butter (That's a compliment and a half as I think Jamiroquai's the bestest band evah!) Never heard any of Justice's other stuff. Played the CD all the way through and the songs that immediately caught me, in addition to "D.A.N.C.E.", are "DVNO" and "Phantom Pt. II" When I first heard "D.A.N.C.E.", I thought I'd found my new Bassment Jaxx. Nope. I can sit and listen to a Jaxx CD all the way through and love it all. Unfortunately, not so with this CD as of this writing. I'll give it another listen this weekend. While I can't help but compare Justice to the Jaxx, here's another comparison. With a Jaxx CD, not all of the songs sound so much alike a some of their songs sound like they could be from different albums and different artists. I can sum Cross up in one sentence: Optimus Prime with gas. I was going to give this CD three stars. But because they're French and because "D.A.N.C.E." is a banger, I'll give it four.
This Gets Old Fast.......2007-07-26
This music has been done better by other people. I admit they assembled things a little differently, with a harder sound, but I don't hear the layers and depth of production that I've heard on other leading albums in this genre. Maybe you have to experience it live.
Very good........2007-07-23
This album is very good with that French electro sound. If you like Daft Punk and parties, you might like this album. The opening notes say it all.
Great (not just good) tracks:
Phantom
Genesis
DVNO
Stress
One Minute to Midnight
The rest of the tracks are all good, except 'The Party'. This track (featuring Uffie) is terrible because she has no talent and basically sing-talks over a quiet Justice track. Either a) the Justice guys mistakenly convinced themselves she's good or b) there was pressure from the record label to put her on a track (Uffie and Justice are both on Ed Banger records).
Noise.......2007-07-17
I can't even begin to see how they equate Justice with Daft Punk!! This isn't techno and it's certainly not rock or punk. It's noise, alright? It's Chemical Brothers if the Chemical Brothers had no rhythm... or an insanely short attention span. When I listen to Techno or Dance music, I need some kind of element to tie it all together... to facilitate the musical journey, if you will... a beat. Justice keeps throwing in different shrill sounds and... Hell, they make Ministry and the whole Industrial movement sound almost classical. Sorry guys, but I don't get it. Justice sounds to me like bad noise. The only decent track there contains a sample from an Italian dance song.
J'suis desole les mecs, but when you compare Justice to others often lumped into contemporary "French sound": Air, Daft Punk, Kid Loco, and many others... these guys leave lots to be desired.

More Hits Than You Might Remember.......2007-06-05
My wife got this for me because when he'd come on the radio I would say "Do you remember this one?". Anyway, I was surprised how many songs on there I knew once I listened to it.
CHRIS CROSS GREATNESS .......2007-05-14
What an awesome CD. The vintage songs that made him a hit so long ago, and a few new ones thrown in make an excellent ballance. if you're into great lyrics, and the supreem vocals of Christopher Cross, this provides it all.
Good collection.......2007-03-11
This is a good collection of hits. They are in a nice order to listen to. Really glad I ordered it.
"Sailing"-Nostalgia at it's Best!!!!.......2007-03-09
It was 1979, I was up at a cottage on the lake north of Toronto and it was sunset when I first heard "Sailing". Now everytime I hear that song I'm taken back to golden sunsets on the lake and this beautiful song playing.
Other great songs are "Arthur's Theme", "I Take You Forever", a great duet that came out in 1988 and I have fond memories of, "Think of Laura", a melancoly tune but a song that just take you back to the early 80's like "Arthur's Theme" and a modest hit from 1987 called "Swept Away", great song. I also first heard this song on a "Growing Pains" episode and loved it.
I'm all about the ballads on this CD. To me Christopher Cross' music takes me back to a wonderful nostalgic time in my life, as I'm sure so many of us can relate. His music puts a smile on your face. I agree with another reviewers comments about his looks-okay so he doesn't look like Brad Pitt-So What! He seems like a down to earth guy just singing from his heart and I think his fans wouldn't have it any other way.
A Terrific Compilation of Christopher Cross!.......2007-02-12
I don't know why Christopher Cross' career took a nosedive because he's still one of the greats of easy listening even now. I love the song, Swept Away, which has always been my favorite. Maybe it's because it was used in the Growing Pains Hawaiian episodes. I love Sailing, Come to My Window, and of course, Arthur's theme. People will realize that Christopher Cross' music is still relevant, soothing, deeply relaxing, and classic because it holds up even in today's standards. Yes, I know it's not the 1980s anymore but when you hear Chris' singing, you can still remember it. At least with today, the internet and the computer age has allowed us to gain easier access to it. I remember searching every music store for this song. I'm not one of those people who burn their music off the internet. I'm old fashioned. I would rather buy it and listen to it on cds in my car or at the gym. When I hear him, I feel a little relaxed about life in general.

AMAZING!!.......2007-07-26
I did not hear of Lecrae until I got to college and one of my friends introduced me to him. I cannot believe that I have never heard of him. I am glad I did. This album is beyond amazing. I play it all the at home and in the car so much, that my friends and family ask for it. Kids on campus are hooked. My friend's birthday is coming up and he'll be turning 34. He's a big kid at heart and loves gospel music. This is the perfect gift for him. Some people don't believe in holy hip-hop (especially the older generation) because they are used to tradition and are old fashion. It took a lot for them to get use to Kirk Franklin. This is a movement, and it will keep getting bigger and bigger. My dance group did a dance to The King and kids went crazy. They were not expecting that kind of music to come out of the speakers. It's nice to see that gospel music is changing and appealing to the younger generation. Lets keep the movement going!
Sound Doctrine in Song.......2007-07-22
In a time like this, it is good to see that there are artistes out there who can produce something of quality, not in terms of music but of content. This album is filled with songs with a deep self-less and evanglistic edge as Lacrae uses his talents to passionately convey is passion for Christ in contemporary fashion. His creativity is certainly outstanding in songs like, 'Death Story', 'Get Low' and 'Invisible'. I hope and pray that he continues to earnestly contend for the faith and doesnt get corrrupted by all these new doctrinial heresies and modern 'revelations' that are blowing in the air. May The LordGod keep you in His grace in these last days.
Great.......2007-07-19
Lecrae is a good rapper, christian or not. The beats on this album are rediculous. I give this cd to all the teens I work with and they eat it up. I like this one a little more than his first.
10 MICS.......2007-07-12
THIS WHOLE ALBUM GOES HARD WITH LYRICS, BEATS, AND MOST IMPORTANT THE WORD OF GOD. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THIS ALBUM YOU ARE SLEEPING HEAVY THIS IS A MUST HAVE ALBUM 10 MICS IN MY BOOK THE WHOLE ALBUM IS BANGIN. A MUST COP NOW ALBUM.
Great CD.......2007-07-04
All the tracks are hot, they need to put out more gospel rap like this for the young geerations like myself.

Haunting, evocative, mysterious, and magnificent, Enigma's Cross of Changes offers nine musical explorations of sound and sensation that dazzle and amaze. The songs unfold in rolling waves, each more complex and richly layered than the last, yet each fully capable of standing alone as a musically satisfying experience. The standout track on this disc is "Return to Innocence," which combines Native American chanting, Celtic harmonies, and a deceptively simple lyric to devastating effect. At once esoteric and elemental, Cross of Changes is a fine example of the best the genre has to offer. --L.A. Smith

I would assume I'm one of the many who bought this CD on the basis of their one "hit", and was dissapointed. Nothing wrong with the CD, it's just not as good as "Age of Innocence" was when it came out, and really seems dated now.

Christopher Cross' Best Album, Bar None........2007-03-14
This debut album by Christopher Cross is definately his very best work and a masterpiece. His albums that would follow, would never reach the status of this one, in quality and his best work. Every song on this album is great and actually, this album in itself, could be considered his greatest hits, in my opinion. I just love the sound of all of these songs and it brings back vivid memories of 1980, which for me was an exciting year, anyway. I'd definately recommend it to anyone that loves late 70's-early 80's soft rock.
awesome cd.......2007-02-10
I remember listening to sailing as a kid and was favorite song back then. The only other CD that sounds similar to this that I've heard is "Reading Rainbow's greatist hits"... or at least some songs on there. Sad that, that CD is not on amazon as well. It's also a children's CD so the lyrics reflect it too.
YES, I DUG THIS!!!!.......2007-02-02
hey, i like christpher cross' early stuff. i think this album is easy listening personified. i got it for SAILING myself, but i was surprised at how much i enjoyed the other songs on here besides the obvious ones that you hear on the light radio stations these days. i recommend this album to anyone looking for something to just relax and ease the mind to.
Music is ultimately very personal.......2006-12-12
I know this album has been called everything under he sun. From great Pop to utter sappy trash. This review won't mean much to most people, but it goes to the heart of what music is about. First of all, I think this can be called a classic POP album. Aside from the songs everyone knows like "Sailing" and "Ride Like The Wind", the album contains very well written songs with great harmony like "Poor Shirley", "Spinning", and "Minstrel Gigilo". It also contains some pretty nice guitar playing by Chris, Larry Carlton, and Eric Johnson. All that being said, the album has a special place in my heart for its ability to simply take me back in time. It was the summer of my Freshman year of high school and this album was the hottest thing going. When I hear these songs, I literally feel 14 again. The summer nights driving my 10 speed to my girlfriends house on a beautiful summer night in (what was then) wonderful Colorado Springs, never thinking much past tomorrow. This album on a cassette walkman was with me everywhere. I hear these songs and get a little tickle deep down. For a few minutes or even a few seconds I am 14 again on that 10 speed. The feelings and images are still so vivid, for those few minutes I am back in that wonderful time that was oh too short. I moved away that fall and the innocence of that summer would be forever lost. But the music on this album will stay with me as a reminder of that point in time. It is a wonderful album, and as I said this is no doubt no help at all to anyone wanting to buy this CD. But it speaks to the power of great music, so if you are in your late 30's, give it a listen. Maybe it will spark some memories in you as well. It never gets far from my CD player, even though the memories it invokes get further from me every day.

Hailed upon its arrival as a significant comeback for the Band, this 1975 collection hasn't aged as well as the likes of Stage Fright, Moondog Matinee, or even the outfit's post-Robbie Robertson output. The eight-song collection (augmented on the 2001 reissue with two agreeable extras--alternate versions of "Twilight" and "Christmas Must Be Tonight") isn't without its delights, foremost being Rick Danko's heavy-hearted reading of the devastating "It Makes No Difference." But for every "Forbidden Fruit" and "Ophelia"--worthy additions to Robertson's credits--there are the somewhat forced likes of "Jupiter Hollow" and "Rags and Bones." Also, Garth Hudson stocked up on the latest technology before heading into the studio, but the layers ARPs and mini-Moogs here contribute to a feeling of busyness. Northern Lights--Southern Cross is very much a '70s album--not a good thing from a quintet whose best music was tough to peg to any era. --Steven Stolder

The final classic.......2007-01-10
The Band's sixth and final proper studio album (I don't really count Islands, the collection of half-hearted studio outtakes, as a real album), Northern Lights - Southern Cross is a surprisingly strong comeback in both writing and performance. The Band hadn't released an album of new material since the disappointing Cahoots, and the extracurricular substance-related activities of Richard Manuel and Rick Danko lessened their songwriting output considerably (completely in Manuel's case). However, despite their stumbles and a growing divergence of some members (guitarist/songwriter Robbie Robertson would be ready to leave the group not long after the album was released), the quintet pull off amazing comeback album, filled with what originally made The Band so classic--great writing, strong playing from Manuel, Danko and Levon Helm, and expert playing, especially from organist/multi-instrumentalist Garth Hudson.
The album kicks off with the rocking "Forbidden Fruit," a cautionary tale sung by Helm. One thing I actually like about Robertson's somewhat egotistical prominence in the later Band material is his up-front, gnarly guitar--he starts using the whammy bar on this album, and the results are wicked to say the least. He takes a few blistering solos in "Forbidden Fruit" that make you wonder if he sold his soul for his guitar skills. This song also marks Garth Hudson's introduction of (then) new synthesizers into his arsenal of keyboards. It might off-put you if you're a classic Americana Band fan, but give it a chance--it really grew on me. Regardless of the instrument, it's still being played by the bearded master, Garth Hudson. The second track is a "Hobo Jungle," a mid-tempo narrative that features some excellent acoustic guitar from Robbie and one of the finest vocal melodies on Band record, sung by Richard Manuel. Despite his heavy drinking, his voice still sounds great, though it's become quite weathered. "Ophelia" is one of the more well-known tracks on the album. The Band uses an almost Dixieland horn arrangement and Levon Helm, in addition to singing, pounds the skins with reckless abandon.
The other well-known track is "Acadian Driftwood," a song Robbie wrote about the Acadian Indians who were forced to move from Canada to Louisiana. It's a heartfelt tribute, sung by all three vocalists and featuring a piccolo part by Garth Hudson. "Ring Your Bell" is one of the group's funkiest songs, a pretty humorous outlaw tune and a all-out belter from Danko, who also sings "It Makes No Difference." One of Robbie Robertson's best love ballads, this track became a sort of signature torch tune for Rick, and it's buoyed by some of Robbie's revelatory guitar and Garth on saxophone. "Jupiter Hollow" is a long (for The Band) and experimental song--a great detour, with a lot of mythological and mystical imagery, and a whole lot of synth overdubs from Garth Hudson. It makes for a really cool listen and has a groovy vibe and some creative drumming from Levon. The album closes on a truly classic note with "Rags and Bones," another darkly funky romp through a night-time city with some of Robbie's most lively and creative guitar (check out that left channel--wow!).
Northern Lights - Southern Cross is The Band's shortest album, and it's always over too soon. The bonus tracks are OK, but as usual don't add anything (careful they don't spoil the vibe of the original album). This one definitely ranks pretty high up there for me as one of their top albums--worlds better than Cahoots and with moments that transcend a lot of their other material. It's such a pity they had to quit making music when their last album was this great. A lot of people will tell you they didn't make any good music after Stage Fright, but give Northern Lights - Southern Cross a try and I think you might agree with me that that's simply not true. I hope you enjoy The Band's final classic!
One of the Band's Best -- An Elegant Swan Song.......2006-02-14
I disagree with the reviewers who find this album too "70s" -- yes, the production and Garth's use of the Moog and other synths peg the recording date of the record -- but why is that presumed to be a bad thing?
I love the way these songs flow seamlessly from one to another -- the songs all deal with loss, upheaval, movement, endurance, cycles of joy and sadness, all beautifully pieced together. The liner notes on the reissue really add to the significance and enjoyment of these songs; I love the way Robbie wrote "Ophelia" and "Forbidden Fruit" using older, discarded chord progressions. Danko knocks one of the park with his tortured, sensitive reading of "It Makes No Difference," and personally I enjoy Garth's enveloping and intricate synth work on "Jupiter Hollow." Of course Acadian Driftwood is a classic story of uprooting, perseverance, and survival, and even the unadorned and simple Christmas song tacked on to the end works for me.
One of the Band's best and a great way to go out (I prefer to ignore Islands....).
I like the words; the singing is great, some songs outstanding.......2006-01-16
On Junior Day, 2006, I would like to seek lessons from the twentieth century that apply to the situation in the world. Things change, but our grasp of sentimentality can ebb or flow either way, particularly if it is informed by listening to The Band album from 1975, `Northern Lights, Southern Cross.' Someone in The Band might be from Canada, and the song `Acadian Driftwood' pictures a family with a broken-down car trying to get someplace where life was better, as some French Canadians made it all the way to New Orleans after France lost its hold on Quebec. Somehow the music seems a bit more cheerful for the song `Ophelia,' when The Band is singing:
Ashes of laughter, the ghost is clear,
Why do the best things always disappear,
like Ophelia? Please darken my door.
There are a number of songs about drifters. `Hobo Jungle,' `Jupiter Hollow,' and maybe `Rags And Bones.' In the first song, `Forbidden Fruit,' there is an admonition:
You got one life that you better not waste.
The Band had been playing together for years when `Northern Lights, Southern Cross' was recorded. Among the tales of woe that allowed music to explore the depths of the human situation, `It Makes No Difference' by J. R. Robertson took four or five chords to get through the first two lines, added a few more chords for the chorus, then managed to fit in a few more for the part in the middle that declares:
Now there's no love
As true as the love
That dies untold
But the clouds never hung so low before.
Civilization requires certain limits to love, which threatens to uproot the basic standards of stability, but music keeps morphing, as The Band throws in a few more chords near the end with the words:
Without your love I'm nothing at all
Like an empty hall it's a lonely fall
Since you've gone it's a losing battle
Stampeding cattle, they rattle the walls.
Well, I love you so much
It's all I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before.
The last four lines probably use the same chords as the lines ending with "But the clouds never hung so low before." The hurt of lost love seems to apply to love that never even happened yet, rain or shine, because "The shadow never seems to fade away." And as for songs:
These old love letters
Well, I just can't keep
'Cause like the gambler says
Read 'em and weep
And the dawn don't rescue me no more.
3rd Best Band Album, Still one of the Top 100 ever.......2005-06-19
It is well known that by 1975 when this album was recorded, The Band was much less a band than they used to be, not due to loss of talent, but loss of the easygoing friendships that had fueled the first two albums. What a showing they still make.
To me Richard Manuel sang some of the greatest performances of his life on this album, for instance check out: Hobo Jungle, Rags & Bones, Acadian Driftwood. Levon and Rick also hand in some fine performances, Levon particularly on Forbidden Fruit, Rick's Swan Song is most definately It Makes No Difference. Robbie provides some very good lyrics for the whole album. Garth is brilliant of course, "ain't it easy when you know how" .
My only complaint is it is just not long enough, 8 songs on the original, 10 on the remastered edition. I grew up in a house full of Classic Rock "N Roll. When I heard The Band, I was mesmerized by how each song can sound so different from each other but they never lose that tight ensemble sound. To me Richard Manuel is the greatest singer in the History of Popular Music.
A must purchase for any fan of The Band, or any fan of Truly Soulful, meaningful Roots Music.
****1/4. The Band's last great record.......2004-08-03
The strongest Band album since "Stage Fright", "Northern Lights, Southern Cross" was The Band's first studio album in four years. Better than "Cahoots" and "Moondog Matinee", it is really The Band's last hurrah, although the mediocre "Islands" did come out in 1977, after the Canadian-American outfit had stopped touring for good. (Robbie Robertson says about "Islands": "It wasn't even an album, we were just trying to get out of a contract!")
"Northern Lights, Southern Cross" features the same dense, muscular arrangements as previous albums, anchored by Levon Helm's supple, versatile drumming, and the role of lead vocalist is still passed around between Helm, Danko, and Manuel. The only notable difference is that Garth Hudson had partially abandoned his Lowrey organ in favour of synthesizers (that may sound ominous, but it really isn't).
Robbie Robertson is credited as the sole composer on all eight tracks on the original LP, as well as the newly added bonus cuts, and the many highlights include the rollicking "Ophelia", Rick Danko's excellent performance of the mournful ballad "It Makes No Difference", and the lyrical, acoustic folk-rock of "Hobo Jungle".
But the album's centrepiece has to be the epic "Acadian Driftwood", a nearly seven minute folkish narrative which chronicles the story of the Acadians, a people exiled from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in the 1750s. It is a superbly evocative masterpiece, one of Robbie Robertson's very best songs.
Not as highly touted as "Music From Big Pink" or "The Band", "Northern Lights, Southern Cross" is nevertheless one of The Band's classic albums. Being the Band's fourth best record really isn't half bad, you know.

Jesse.......2007-05-13
What can you say about CCR. Absolutly amazing. I own over 40,000 songs and this is one of my top 5 bands being that they are so original and you can tell they love their music. I love punk rock, grunge, and classic rock and these guys really are in their own genre. I love their remake of "Wanna rock'n'roll" This is really the CD you need to check out if you haven't heard these guys before... Its just to bad there is no "Boys from Oklahoma" ...
Great Collection of My Favorites.......2007-02-15
This double disc live CD includes all my favorite CCR songs, and also pulls up some of their friends to sing with them. Unlike most live CD's there is not a lot of talking, just a lot of great music. This live compilation is a vital for all CCR fans.
Cross Canadian Ragweed.......2007-01-10
If you like Cross Canadian Ragweed, buy this cd. It is a two disc set, with mostly previously recorded tracks, but also some new ones. We are really enjoying it!
Simply the Best.......2006-12-10
Finding out where some of the songs came from (inspiration) was great! I hope everyone read the thank yous...that was just as great as the cd itself. These guys and their families are some of the best people.
Rock and Roll is alive and well.......2006-12-06
If you think the days of true rock and roll are dead and gone, check out this CD. As someone who can barely stand to listen to rock radio anymore, Ragweed is a welcome sign that good music is still being made, whether the mainstream wants us to hear it or not. Cody Canada has really turned into a shredder on the electric guitar, and this CD is worth buying just for the sake of listening to his solos. Canada's playing makes Robert Earl Keen's "Lonely Feeling" into one of the most powerful rock ballads I've heard. All of the tracks show off the skills of this band, and it's amazing how far they have come since "Live at the Wormy Dog" (which is another great CD if you want to hear the early days). The last few songs on the first CD are acoustic, which gives you a chance to hear a side of Ragweed that you maybe haven't heard before. Canada's cover of Neil Young's "Needle and the Damage Done" really shows off his voice and acoustic guitar skills.
If I have one complaint about this CD, it might be that the CD is a true live CD (no remixing), and sometimes it's hard to hear the awesome musicianship or Canada's vocals over the noise of the crowd. A lot of people will probably love it for the same reason though. All in all, anyone who loves good old fashioned rock and roll will love this CD.

TRU Life really suprised me this record! They all sounded hot the beats were blazin! Great job DJ Official!
Get this one.......2007-06-25
In the past, I may have been able to pick about 1 or 2 songs off of a Cross Movement CD that I really liked. This album is totally different. There are about six songs that are absolutely incredible. None of the songs are subpar. A great album from start to finish...and I totally mean that. The final song is like the finale and it does not disappoint at all. My favorites are "louder", "Clap Your Hands", "Get That", and "The Last Cypha." But as I said, all of the songs are good, so be sure to get this album.
Thank God for Cross Movement.......2007-06-06
This album is hot and merits 5+ stars.
But if this is the Cross Movement's last project as a group, I would like to comment on their impact on me. I'm a 30 year old Black male, but because of my deep southern religious upbringing, was never a major part of "hip hop culture" as a child. I would hear hip hop at school or occasionally sneak to watch a few videos when my parents (father-pastor, mother- missionary) weren't around. I enjoyed some songs, but never became a major hip hop head. Even then, I preferred the Southern style to the East Coast flavor. I can say, without hyperbole, that Cross Movement has had the greatest effect on me embracing some elements of hip hop culture, while also cultivating my faith in Christ.
As a budding, potential scholar myself, I am very much impressed and captivated by their knowledge of the Holy Scripture and their ability to articulate Old and New Testament principles, translating them into an artistic language that is relevant to those alive during this generation. They seem, as a whole, to avoid denominational, schismatic issues and focus primarily on plain Biblical tenets. There is rarely a song that does not include the Gospel or cross of Christ.
Finally, and this is a comment that I make about other Christian artists whom this applies to. They are fully cognizant that they are practicing an expression of their faith which is seen as radical, and that many are hostile to, but they have remained focused, preaching the message of Jesus Christ, His Cross, and His Holiness. They have learned the art of being radical without being rebellious.
Cross Movement members:
If you all read this review-- May God continue to use and bless you all. Continue the work of the Lord in whatever capacity the Spirit leads you.

Great Finish!!.......2007-06-06
If this is truly CM's last album, it is a great finish to a phenominal career. This album is amazing! In my opinion it is their best effort to date; they didn't pull any strings or hold anything back on this project. My fav track is #10-Name Up but the whole joint is crazy. GO COP IT NOW!!!!! This is an album for Christian Hip Hop heads and even cats that are into the secular game. This album is for everyone.
