3 out of 5 stars Deserves to be a double cd.......2006-08-20

Here's the complete songlist from the movie credits, with the exception of the st. anger stuff, I would've liked a more complete soundtrack, this full priced ep with the chinese t shirt is cheezy. if they included the st. anger songs, they could've included raw alternative studio cuts. the ennio morricone song would've been a slam dunk closer.

1 out of 5 stars How did this happen?.......2006-01-01

How could Metallica take great songs like "Damage Inc." and "Ride the Lightning", from the early days, and massacre them like this? They brought those sonic masterpieces all the way down to the level of the train wreck that was "St. Anger". James' weak and incoherent voice would have been acceptable if I hadn't listened to some of Metallica's other Live releases and KNOWN that he could have done better. And why the hell is Lars still banging on tin cans instead of a real percussion set? It was that kind of drumming that utterly destroyed "St. Anger", yet somehow Ulrich hasn't gotten the hint yet.

It's amazing. It's as if these guys were TRYING to obliterate their own songs.

3 out of 5 stars Metallica Live.......2005-12-11

Ok, this is pretty cool exept that this is way too short. Yes it is a soundboard recording, but you can go to [...] to download any of the Metallica shows posted for free. This is completely legal because it is part of the band's site. Plus the band encourages the trading and recording of their shows over the internet. They just don't want you to download their studio music.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of good money.......2005-12-07

I bought this CD without listening to the clips and boy, do I repent! This is probably the worst music Metallica has produced... Don't waste even a penny on this garbage.

2 out of 5 stars Can i get a refund?.......2005-10-21

If you're going to spearhead the movement on piracy and copywrite laws you better damn well put a good album out . I'm not talking about two or three good songs either . As a consumer I'm entitled to know what I'm buying . If i knew the singing on this cd lacked any balls and the drums sounded like someone beating on garbage cans i wouldnt have wasted my hard earned money on it . The setlist is great ...Motorbreath , Hit the Lights , Damge Inc etc ...the execution stinks . This is fourth time Metallica has stolen money from me . Reload , St Anger, S&M and now this peice of #$%. The question is ( and its a good one )...do i have any rights as a consumer ? or have i been hoodwinked again by three whiney washwomen posing as a metal band ?

5 out of 5 stars Great Single.......2005-10-25

This CD & T-shirt are well worth the price, you can also just get the CD for ten dollers. The live tracks are great, especially Motorbreath. Some Kind of Monster is a great song, the full length 8:30 track is much better than the edited version 4:16 seen on the video. Also the shirt is great, the design is the Some Kind of Monster full body. And if you a really a fan of this band, you'll like this.

1 out of 5 stars Metallica's "NEW IMAGE".......2005-02-03

Yeah bands change but this is not change this is crappy, I could make better music. Where are the guitar solos, the meaningful lyrics in Metallica's new music? Honestly I have no problem with a bands sound changing, but normally you expect them to get better not worse, I like metallica because they are good, but their new stuff isnt, its that simple.

1 out of 5 stars I wont even comment on this crap...........2004-09-18

this is a rehash or previous releases, more metallica money grubbing attempts....save your money

5 out of 5 stars Get Over It, Already They Are not Puppets.......2004-09-15

I don't care what you people say, Metallica still kicks-a$$. Next time you morons feel like ragging on James and company remember that bands have to evolve or they tend to disappear. Can you honestly name very many bands from the 80's metal scene that are still around today? NO bands that broke up and reunited DO NOT count.
Metallica would love to make albums that sound just like Kill 'Em All but if they did (as much as you complain about wanting that sound) everyone would start whining "That sounds like stuff they did in the 80's, can't they get with the times?" I've noticed that you morons can't be pleased. you just like to complain about anything METALLICA. Also I would like to know if some of the reviewers have even seen Metallica live? Because I have seen them twice recently and they played King Nothing off Load and Fuel off Reload. Not to mention Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, and Sad But True. As a matter of fact I don't know of any concert since the black album was released that they have not played Enter Sandman. And this album and T-shirt were great, a good price too. I can't wait for the movie. You people don't want to listen to a great band your just want a group of puppets that will only play what you want them to.

1 out of 5 stars They just keep sinking lower and lower.............2004-08-03

Metallica is a dog that needs to be put down. They have far outlived their usefullness to rock n roll. What is this crap they are trying to unleash on us?

OK we have two versions of 'Some kind of Monster' from the sorriest album that ever saw the light of day 'St. Anger'. Sandwiched between these two disasters are six live songs. Songs that remind us of what Metallica once was and will never be again. Three songs from 'Kill em All', one from 'Ride the Lightning' and two from 'Master of Puppets'. Hmmmm six songs that helped make them legends and originally featured Cliff Burton on bass. Nothing from Justice or the notorious and rotten albums that followed it. Metallica will stop at nothing to milk their former glory out of their first three albums. Even on the St. Anger Tour it was obvious that Jaymz and Lars had to return to the well and play their old tunes while St. Anger had a song or two and the Load and Black albums were forgotten.

Well at least you get a T-shirt with this garbage. You can keep it hanging in the bathroom and use it to wipe when you suddenly realize that you forgot to buy or steal toilet paper.

Put a fork in 'em, they're done.

4 out of 5 stars Was not meant to be realeased!.......2005-03-15

This is a new version of Metallica live. If you don't know how the band sounds live nowadays well this is your chance. Everybody know that Metallica is not the same after St. Anger ok but still after all the bad comments about the band if you go to one of their concerts you'd be amazed cause Metallica live is another whole different experience. The tracks were recorded with regular microphones and they did not use the proper equipment which they used in S&M. This equipment is composed of a certain number of microphones, each one is intended to record certain instrument. In the drum set there is one microphone in each part of the drums. There's also another type of microphone that records the audience. Then everything is put together and that's what it's called mixing and mastering. If you read the credits on a live cd you will see. If metallica would have recorded this cd with this equipment it would have had a much richer sound. But they picked the best songs they thought they were and they put it together and mixed roughly. Metallica records their own show for different purposes. This was one of then. If Metallica decides to make another live cd they would not put only 7 songs and call it EP. That would be a new album with a new production.

5 out of 5 stars old school rox.......2004-07-30

This is a cool EP to get if you dig collecting live Metallica tracks. Will Culp's review for this was pretty awful... hey will, how could you say damage inc and ride the lightning are some of metallica's weakest songs in the 80s? Are you one of those trendy metallica fans who only know Fade to BLack and Master of Puppets? Your musical tastes obviously lacks.

The edit of Some Kind of Monster sounds better than original but nothing great. Its kind of a shame Metallica spent more time making a movie that'll probably tarnish their perception of most fans who viewed them as those guys in the 80s who were willing to take anybody down. They could've spent way more time recording St Anger than crying to some psychologist aobut their problems.

Either way, old tracks are great and don't listen to Will Culp's sub par review.

3 out of 5 stars Some Kind of Monster, with the T Shirt!.......2004-07-15

Some Kind of Monster(EP)(2004). Metallica's Second EP, comprised of Two 'Some Kind of Monster' Tracks and 6 Live Tracks.

To stir up fans to go see their new Documentary, 'Some Kind of Monster', Metallica decided to release an EP, featuring two versions of 'Some Kind of Monster', the regular song of 'St. Anger', and a new edit. They also added six new Live tracks they took from a concert in Paris, France(The Hottest Day in Paris' History), consisting of tracks from Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, and Master of Puppets. Since this is the first material after the disappointing St.Anger, and Metallica's most affordable Live collection(S&M and Live Sh*t: Binge and Purge are the others), being a Metallica fan, I was expecting a lot from this EP. So,does the 'Some Kind of Monster' EP live up to my expectations, or just fall flat on its face like St. Anger? Read on to find out...

    Track Listing-

The first thing you notice about 'Some Kind of Monster' is the Track Listing is rather odd. First, you have the 'St. Anger' "Some Kind of Monster", and a new edit of "Some Kind of Monster", so two of the 8 tracks are "Some Kind of Monster", and since it's a sub-par song, that's not a good thing. Then, we get an array of tracks from the 80's, but, unfortuneatly, other than "Motorbreath", most of the songs are some of Metallica's weakest tracks from the 80's. We get Three tracks from Kill 'Em All, which include "The Four Horsemen","Motorbreath","and "Hit The Lights". Since 'Kill 'Em All' is Metallica's Worst Record of the 80's, it's surprising that it contains the bulk of the material, which, while very good, is not Metallica's best. From 'Ride The Lightning', we get "Ride The Lightning", which is one of the best songs off 'Ride The Lightning', and I'm glad they included it, because it's not very popular. From 'Master of Puppets', we get "Leper Messiah" and "Damage, INC.", arguably the worst songs off 'Master of Puppets'. That sums up the track listing, but here's how I would have done it-

    1. Seek and Destroy
    2. For Whom The Bells Toll
    3. Sanitarium
    4. One
    5. Enter Sandman
    6. King Nothing
    7. Whiskey in Jar
    8. Some Kind of Monster

I feel that more accurately represents Metallica's material, and I was a tad dissapointed at the Track Listing, although I did like the inclusion of "Ride The Lightning", arguably the best song on 'Some Kind of Monster'. Track Listing- 2/5

    Band Performance-
First off, the two "Some Kind of Monster"'s are what you'd expect from St. Anger. Tin-Can Drumming from Lars, Good riffs from Hammett(Nothing compared to earlier material), but unfortuneatly, no solos. Hetfield's vocals aren't to good, except during the chorus. Overall, "Some Kind of Monster" is a Sub-par performance. On to the concert! Lars Ulrich's drumming is Spot-on, and his performance accurately represents the songs he plays. On many tracks though, the drums sound slightly "off-tune", except nowhere near the bad quality on 'St. Anger'. Kirk Hammett is Kirk Hammett, and shows why he's one of the premier guitarists in Heavy Metal. His performance is great, showcasing blistering solos and equally agressive riffs, and his guitar sounds perfect, and he represents his old material very well. James Hetfield's vocals are good at times, and bad at times. Because he "deepened" his vocals during the 90's, the 80's material sounds MUCH different. For me, I happen to like the original vocals from Hetfield, but sometimes his vocals work, such as on "Ride The Lightning", while other times, such as on "The Four Horseman", they sound weird. Robert Trujillo has a good performance, and I can't fault him in his bass playing! Overall, a pretty good Live performance, though not as good as S&M or Live Sh*t. Band Performance- 4/5

    Sound Quality/Crowd-

'Some Kind of Monster' generally has good Sound Quality, except it's a Live album, so some features, such as the drumming and the bass, get lost in the thick of things, and sometimes both instruments sound hollow. Hammett and Hetfield's guitars sounded perfect though, and they perfectly echo out through my speakers at the blistering speeds they're played. Hetfield's vocals are clear, yet, as I said before, they sound a little strange on some of the songs. The Crowd Interaction was like it wasn't even there, because other than clapping, Paris did absolutely nothing! Oh well it won't affect my rating! Sound Quality- 4/5

Overall, 'Some Kind of Monster' was all I expected, not less or more so. The reason I give it Three stars is, because of the less than stellar Track Selection(But they did put "Ride The Lightning" on, and it's the best here!), the iffy vocals from Hetfield, and the slightly off(But not badly) sound quality of the Drums and Bass. If you're looking for a cheap way to hear Metallica Live, the 'Some Kind of Monster' EP is for you. Although, I would recommend S&M more, but some people might not like the orchestra.

RECOMMENDED FOR FANS OF METALLICA WHO WANT A TASTE OF RAW, LIVE METALLICA AND DON'T WANT TO PAY A LOT OF MONEY FOR IT, PLUS YOU GET A T SHIRT!

    Thanks For Reading!
