5 out of 5 stars My Favorite of Bruce's Solo Efforts.......2007-05-14

Despite being despised by the "hardcore" metalhead fans of Maiden and Dickinson, Skunkworks is a terrific album and contains some of the most quality material that Bruce has ever produced. Dickinson poured his heart and soul into the writing of this album, and it shows. It's just a shame that so many people refuse to acknowledge the album's quality because it's not metal.

If you don't mind branching out from metal into a whole new world of Bruce Dickinson, give this album a try. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Skunkworks.......2007-04-24

Skunkworks marked a key turning point for Bruce Dickinson (not to mention the eventually reunited Iron Maiden). Capitalizing flawlessly on his absolutely incomparable voice, all his works after this move up an echelon, meaningfully and superbly written to best compliment his terrific range and depth. Oddly overlooked during the '90s infatuation with finding "new sounds." Working with some very talented "Gen X" professionals, this effort of the Master puts most of the era's contemporaries to shame. Whatever the chemistry, it's too bad the band didn't stick together for more albums. This is a "must-have" for just about ANY music collector.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Soundgarden wanna-be.......2006-04-15

Aside from a few great tracks (Inertia, Solar Confinement, Dreamstate, Meltdown) this is a pretty disposable rock album. It's more cohesive than most of Bruce's work but in the end, it's an attempt to cash in the much-better alt rock bands of the mid 90s. Basically if you take away the lyrical brilliance and intricate musical heaviness of Soundgarden you've got Skunkworks.

4 out of 5 stars The Not-Bruce Album.......2006-03-14

If you are looking for Iron Maiden-esque Bruce or something along the same lines as Balls to Picasso or you are a metal purist, this album is not for you.

But if you are open-minded, a fan of Bruce Dickinson's amazing voice, range and creativity, you will absolutely LOVE this one. I've been a Maiden/Bruce fan since Day 1 and at first I was set on my ear by the grunge overtones in Skunkworks (Headswitch)... but it's now a favorite in my collection.

Bruce proves himself a Renaissance Man with the diverse and interesting subject matter (Strange Death in Paradise, Space Race) mixed with introspective peeks (Meltdown, Faith) you don't get from Maiden lyrics and even his own solos.

This one soars.

5 out of 5 stars NOTHING STINKS ABOUT THIS ALUBUM...........2005-08-26

DAMN!!!!! This cd blew me away when it first came out. Bruce once again opens a new door and releases a collection of tunes thatdiffer from his past writtings and progress into new territories. This is some damn fine writting, playing, and singing.

Not content on rehashing the same old music Dickinson puts together a band that brings out new ideas and timeless music. From first look at the brilliant Storm Thorgerson art work, you know you're in for something completely different and unexpected, and that's exactly what you get. To me this is probably the highlight of Dickinson's solo collection, and even though I enjoy every album he has released this one stands out above the rest.

It's ashame the mass majority of people are narrow minded and not open to creativity. If that was the case this album would have sold millions. All songs on here are brilliantly crafted and delivered with perfection.

The bonus cd gives you a glimpse at what else was happening withing Skunkworks. Songs that show the bands creative side, powerful side and humourous side. If you buy one Dickinson solo cd buy this one and open your mind.

Bruce Dickinson either shouldn't have left Iron Maiden or shouldn't have started his solo career without a decent songwriter as a partner. Without Maiden bassist Steve Harris writing most of the music and lyrics, Dickinson seems to flounder. There's nothing very striking about any of the material on Skunkworks, although the production and engineering by Jack Endino is certainly very solid. --Adem Tepedelen

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Basically Rock Solid.......2005-08-23

Bruce is definitely in for the long haul, and undeniably in it for the music. Even the cover booklet is thoughtful and provocative. If you like Bruce's voice, then this is a great album. He has obviously worked hard to produce a high quality Rock gem.
Maiden fans are ,I think, some of the strongest and most vocal fans of many bands. Bruce , the air-raid siren, Dickenson is a brilliant vocalist, and hopefully has many productive years ahead with both solo project and ( I hope) with MAIDEN projects. A Brilliant Project, and after having heard CHEMICAL WEDDING previously to this, a nice heavy piece of work.
    ENJOY

5 out of 5 stars A great musical enclave in Bruce's excellent career.......2005-06-26

Skunkworks seems to bring out mixed sympathies in people; a bit like Iron Maiden's X Factor in that respect. People who are aware of and like Bruce Dickinson's solo work (and lets face it, it's terrific; arguably superior to a fair amount of Iron Maiden stuff) usually cite The Chemical Wedding and Accident of Birth as archetypical Bruce, and that would be correct. Skunkworks is not like Accident or Birth or Chemical Wedding; it contains a lot of quality tracks, but in a different style.

If I could classify Accident of Birth and Chemical Wedding (I have not yet heardy Tyranny of Souls, but I hear it's like the Chemical Wedding in style), I would call them Metal albums. Skunkworks is more of a 'rock' album, though not in the same way as tattooed millionaire. IT isn't as heavy as the albums that followed it, but there is nothing wrong with that

Skunkworks is a great album with lots of wonderful tracks; I wish Bruce's live setlists gave it more attention. There is almost a 'concept' to this album, Bruce seems to sing predominantly about science and space; yet there is no 'corny' aspect to it, and it certainly is not like being at school. Songs like 'Space Race' and 'Solar Confinement' have a wonderful, warm guitar sound, almost otherworldly, and incredible verses choruses.

Back from the Edge has a very interesting time signature, great chorus and easy to like. This is much the case with the album itself; I didn't find it hard to love the songs here. Dreamstate is a slower, arpeggio'd track, but equally good and a nice tempo change from the faster songs like Space Race and Back from the Edge

Octavia and Inertia are also great songs, with thoughtful lyrics and wonderful choruses. I particularly like the guitar work on Inertia.

There are no bad songs on this cd; Headswitch and I will Not Accept the Truth are probably the weakest tracks, but still good to listen to and not lacking enough to prevent the whole album from being a great listen. Meltdown and Inside the Machine also have great choruses (love the drums in the former), and Innerspace has a nice uplifting feel to it; very optimistic. Strange death in Paradise is a good way to end the album, a more pessimistic and yet sonically uplifting song; with an ending that shows off Bruce's great range and tone.

Overall, I can't understand why this album isn't given Five Stars by everybody. IT may be a matter of personal preference, some believe that Skunkworks deserves less than Five because Chemical Wedding and Accident of Birth were so good, but that doesn't follow necessarily. They are certainly worthy of Five Stars, but so is Skunkworks. Compared to all the many albums out there in the world, Skunkworks is a wonderful CD with enough great songs to justify a mark of Five. IF you like Bruce, you should love this album (my favourites being Space Race, Solar confinement and Back from the Edge)

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch! Top Notch!.......2005-05-24

Unless you are quite the yougster, this album should have been heard long before Mr. Dickinson's rebirth with the Roy Z/"H" solo material and therefore should be judged not against them but with the artist's first two solo albums.Gone are the novelty songs, childish lyrics and rote instrumentation but more remarkably, Bruce does not try to make an Iron Maiden album but ventures into uncharted territory without abandoning the hard rock genre. Consequently, I still listen to this album as much as any other of Bruce's non-Maiden works because it is mature, heavy, catchy as hell and an utter original. The choruses are soaring and unforgettable and the album's production has a clarity that truly enhances the listening experience. The tracks are disparate yet possess an undeniable cohesiveness ranking this as a major work.If you don't see what I mean try listening again with an open mind. Then you will see what I mean. You can thank me when you see the light.

2 out of 5 stars Bruce goes bland..........2005-04-26

This CD is Bruce's version of Halford 2wo project. This is an alternative-metal mess that goes nowehere fast. It's not really bad, but it's in NO way good. It's not even good for what it is. The production is top notch and the performances are quite good but the record lacks distinctive songs and catchy melodies. It's not quite the sell out as many have made it out to be but it's not lacking in strong, epic songs. The alternative influence is not a terrible thing overall but it doesn't help this record find a unique voice.

Pick this up if you are a Bruce fanatic - it may have some gems for you but for the rest...it's just not worth it. Nifty booklet though.

4 out of 5 stars Silly, Stupid "Fans"--Awesome, Inspired Brucie!!!.......2005-02-07

All the complaints about this record are so unbelievably invalid.

Of course, it DOES NOT sound like "Accident of Birth," it DOES NOT sound like "The Chemical Wedding."

    I think it's better...

Jack Endino's production wipes the floor with Roy Z's lame, pedestrian GuitarCenter-dork production.

This record doesn't sound like Rush, or Iron Maiden...what does it sound like? I'll tell you. And I CAN'T BELIEVE all these reviews are too blimey stupid to make this connection...it sounds a lot like King's X. Yes, King's X. There IS a little hint of Soundgarden in there, but also a nod to Pink Floyd (in more than just Storm Thorgersen's cover art), early NWOBHM and Ian Gillian's solo work from the early 1980s. (does anybody who's reviewed this know who HE is and WHAT those records sound like?)

Highlights for me would be, "Back From the Edge," "Solar Confinement," "Headswitch," and the most-King's X-like track, the closer, "Strange Death In Paradise."

A nice mix of (the good) '90s heavy rock, '70s hard rock, NWOBHM, and something not quite as tangible.

    Bruce's most "honest" album.

Skunkworks (1996.) Bruce Dickinson's third album.

When Bruce Dickinson left Iron Maiden, it caused a mixed reaction among many people. His former band recruited a new lead vocalist, and sank to their lowest point ever. Likewise, Dickinson's solo stuff wasn't getting the feedback he'd hoped for. None of it ended up being very popular, and many of his former fans from his Maiden days didn't like it simply because it "didn't sound like Maiden." However, those open-minded fans of Dickinson who were willing to give things a chance quickly learned that his solo work was every bit as strong as the stuff he did with his former band. Tattooed Millionare and Balls To Picasso, his first two albums, sounded drastically different from one another, but each one rocked in its own way. For 1996, Dickinson made several changes to his band formation, and called the new band Skunkworks. However, the record company pushed him to use his own name on the record for publicity purposes. He did. So what resulted was a Bruce Dickinson solo album entitled Skunkworks. If you want to see how his third solo album is, read on to find out.

Bruce Dickinson's third solo album continued the trend started by the first two - every album was different from the other ones, but a five-star masterpiece in its own right. Skunkworks is ANOTHER five-star masterpiece from solo Dickinson. And this is one of the best solo albums he ever did. Like the earlier two solo albums, it's more a hard rock album than a heavy metal album. This release takes trace elements of classic NWOBHM, and combines them with a sound not unlike that of nineties Rush. There's also a bit of a modern rock vibe on the album, giving it a sound similar to that of modern rockers Fuel. Iron Maiden, Rush, and Fuel are three of my favorite bands, and this album is the perfect blend of their widely-diverse sounds. Bruce Dickinson never ceases to amaze me, and truly, the Skunkworks album proved to be no exception to that rule. It seems that most artists maintain a sound their whole career to the point that it gets dull, or they change their sound so much to the point that they totally lose the classic sound people love. Bruce Dickinson does NEITHER of these things. In his solo career, he changed his sound constantly, but never lost hold of what made him who he was. No two of his solo efforts really sound alike, but at the same time, they are all distinctly Dickinson. Skunkworks is a MASTERPIECE, and unquestionably one of the finest rock and roll albums of the nineties. It's highly recommended to any fan of Bruce Dickinson, or any of the aforementioned groups from which the album draws its influences.

The record company recently reissued a number of Bruce Dickinson's solo albums. The reissues feature expanded liner notes, improved sound quality, and bonus tracks. And we're taking A WHOLE EXTRA DISC'S WORTH OF BONUS MATERIAL! He had a lot of solo rarities, and with these reissues, much of it is finally within grasp in America for the first time! The Skunkworks bonus disc even has the Japan only release Live Skunkworks EP on it! If you're gonna get Bruce's solo work, make damn sure you get the remastered, two-CD editions.

Skunkworks rocks. Just when you thought Bruce's solo career couldn't get any better, he releases this masterpiece on the unsuspecting masses. Although his solo stuff isn't as well-known as his Maiden stuff, it is certainly no less excellent. From start to finish, this stands as one of his strongest releases, with any band. If you're a fan, BUY IT.
