Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars American X is the kind of song that this band is all about. .......2007-08-01

After changing their sound from Garage Rock to nearly Folk Rock, BRMC is back with a killer sound. I think fans will welcome back this sound. The band will gather more followers with a more polished album then "Take Them On, On Your Own" and their self-titled release "B.R.M.C.". Despite the return to form on "Baby 81," the album still manages to maintain the material explored in "Howl."

The band doesn't completely abandon that acoustic southern blues rock style heard on their third album. They simply combined everything that they have learned over their past 3 studio albums and smashed it all into this release--- in turn creating an awesome rock album with a one killer song after another. Once you near the end of the album, one track will stand out with 9 minutes of rock. Baby 81 is a 12 inning baseball game with American X being the closer.

5 out of 5 stars "Suicide," she said. "What happened to the revolution?".......2007-07-14

This record is excellent from the first track to the last. So good I almost cried with joy after the first play-through.

3 out of 5 stars Highly disappointing.........2007-07-06

I had big expectations for this album; I love their style and 'Howl' even grew on me more and more as time went on, to where I think it might be their best work.

This album starts out strong: "Took Out A Loan" and "Berlin" (though you have to leave out the iffy lyrics, both songs have great grooves, like some of their best), "Weapon Of Choice" is where things start to go south. The song is a total return to form for the band, and is short and tight, but the chorus just sounds forced to my brain, even though it makes me want to pump my fist.

The Beatles-y "Window" I like, but it sorta derails the album. It's solidly written, but it's the first of bassist/singer Robert Been's contributions to the record that I just don't much dig, because it doesnt' seem to fit. Back to guitarist/singer Peter Hayes' great angsty track "Cold Wind", which fares much better, and encapsulates everything I like about the band. Then comes the string of songs that I inevitably have to skip--"All You Do Is Talk", "Lien On Your Dreams"; really sub-par stuff for a band like this. It gets better; "Need Some Air" and especially "Killing The Light" (the album's best track) bring the album back before the slightly dull "American X", which seems to strive for the vibe of the 'BRMC' album but falls short. It all ends with the slightly anti-climactic "Am I Only"--with it's endlessly repeating 2 chord structure, it's neither really good or bad, it's just there.

Believe me, I don't like to criticize a band I respect as highly as these guys. I just feel they can do better than 60% of this material. I'd hate to see them turn into the kind of band they railed against in "Whatever Happened To My Rock n' Roll?"

5 out of 5 stars Superlative Rock and Roll Album...........2007-06-30

I got into B.R.M.C. quite by accident, but what has drawn me to this band is the fact that smart, solid, unpretentious rock and roll is so hard to come by these days.

It seems far too many popular bands today toil either in the poppy and superficial, or the absurdly inaccessible and needlessly complex.

Given that dichotomy, Black Rebel drives it right down the middle of the fairway (an analogy the band would probably hate). "Baby 81" is smart enough to have meaning, but accessible enough to get heads moving and fists pumping.

For those about to rock, enjoy tracks like "Took Out A Loan", "Berlin", and "Lien On Your Dreams." Although slower tempo tracks like "All You Do Is Talk" and "Killing the Light" are also worth a listen.

The highlight tracks, however, are the first single ("Weapon of Choice") and, for many, the anthem of the album ("American X"). Both are simply brilliant: the former a concise and energetic three minutes and the latter a thundering nine-minute condemnation of the contemporary American mindset. Both act as musical genius and incisive social commentary, at the same time.

Content to share the role of frontman, both Peter Hayes and Robert Levon Been get the job done. Either could carry the show, but the alternating leadership with each song makes for an interesting texture to the album.

As with the rest of their catalog (four albums to date), this is highly, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars B.R.M.C. is back in form - in fact, the best yet!.......2007-06-21

I was a big fan of BRMC's 1st cd, found the 2nd a little less exciting & "Howl" was just lost on me. When I heard this latest cd , I instantly loved it. In fact, I would say that I am enjoying it as much (if not more than) their 1st album. It seems as though they've perfected a laid-back, narcotized blues-based rock guitar sound. Their lyrics straddle a balance between melancholic disillusionment & individualistic defiance. Better still is the fact that the hooks are more infectious, but not at the expense of the unique sound that sets them apart from their contemporaries - the songs are catchy, but in no way do they sound like they've " sold out " to pop sensibilities. Comparisons to Jesus & Mary Chain are still fair, one song even sounds as if it could be a nod to the late Elliot Smith. Overall, the affect is hypnotic, driving & manages to scratch a certain rock n' roll itch that no other band seems able to reach. It's rock played loose, but solid... & for a basic "power trio" it's an amazingly "big" sound.

Though the late Waylon Jennings has had numerous greatest-hits compilations, this four-disc box that encompasses almost half a century of music making is his first comprehensive, career-spanning anthology. While the 1970s and early '80s were plainly Jennings's commercial and creative heyday--when the Outlaw movement christened by his recording of "Ladies Love Outlaws" was in full swagger--highlights here extend from his 1958 revival of the Cajun classic "Jolie Blon" (produced by Jennings's mentor Buddy Holly) through his swan-song recordings with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson as the Highwaymen. The trademark lope of Jennings's music and his penchant for self-mythologizing material give him a strong signature sound, but the anthology shows just how much musical territory he covered--from his folkish reading of Gordon Lightfoot's "(That's What You Get) For Lovin' Me" and his bluesy transformation of Little Richard's "Lucille" through his dips into the songbooks of Neil Young ("Are You Ready for the Country"), Jimmy Webb ("MacArthur Park"), and Los Lobos ("Will the Wolf Survive?"). The 140-page booklet provides thorough credits and annotation, as well as an abundance of photos of Waylon with friends, fellow musicians, and every famous person he ever met (from Muhammad Ali to Metallica's James Hetfield). --Don McLeese

Album Description

A previously unreleased duet with Johnny Cash is among the special tracks to be found on the Waylon Jennings boxed set "Nashville Rebel," due Sept. 26th via RLG Nashville/Legacy.

"The Greatest Cowboy of Them All" was recorded in 1978, the same year the late Jennings' duet with Willie Nelson, "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys," spent four weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's country chart.

Beyond such hits as "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way," "Good Hearted Woman," "I Ain't Living Long Like This," "Highwayman" and "Rose in Paradise," the four-disc collection includes two early period tracks that have never been released in the U.S.: "It's Sure Been Fun" and "People in Dallas Got Hair."

"Nashville Rebel" was created in tandem with Jennings' widow Jessi Colter and their son Shooter Jennings. Liner notes were penned by Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye and country historian Rich Kienzle.

Very cool, often very rare, videos, performances and commercials from the greatest singer ever. Every home should have one.

5 out of 5 stars The Original Nashville Rebel.......2007-03-23

This is the real deal for lovers of country music. Waylon Jennings wrote the book on being the Nashville outlaw. Initially accepted into the scene, Waylon was deeply upset by the record execs who had their stable of studio musicians who would play just what they were told. Performers would hone their songs on the road with hand-picked musicians who, once back in town with Waylon, Willy or Johnny to record again, would be told that they were not needed and the studio boys would play their parts. Waylon was the very first of them to tell those execs to go to Hades.

Well, this collection is just about all you need to hear the very best of Waylon from the very beginning (singing in Creole French!) to the end of his days. Plenty of Jesse Coulter duets, and some very nice sessions with Willy Nelson, Johnny Cash and others (some of which are available for the first time in this collection). They do not (repeat that) make singers the likes of Waylon Jennings any more. His voice is truly a thing of great masculine beauty. And today in Heaven, Johnny and Waylon are singing "The Highwayman" once again.

5 out of 5 stars a must have.......2007-03-21

this is essential for any fan of Waylon very complete and very economical

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Waylon Collection to Date!!!!.......2007-02-20

I have never been a fan of RCA and the way they treat Waylon Jennings music collections. For example: Waylon's original Greatest Hits has eleven tracks, but since it came out on CD, RCA only puts nine tracks on it. You have to buy the import to get the complete original album! Also, the last box set these RCA guys put together had only two CD's worth of music, worthless!! THIS TIME THEY GET IT RIGHT!!! Fours CD's covering everything from the early 60's to even the MCA hits of the late 80's. I especially like the added Cash duets and the Highwayman stuff. On disc 1: That song called "People In Dallas Got Hair" is pure greatness!!!!
The book that's included is a huge bonus:) It has lots of rare pics of Waylon and all of the fans & people who shaped the legend over the years. I think every man, woman, and child should have this box-set added to their country collection............

Album Description

MSI's music is a hybrid of Atari driven electronics with a venomous splash of ADD punk rock. There are three different versions of this release: a 10 track explicit version with a video for "You'll Rebel To Anything", an 11 track clean version with a video of "Diabolical", and an 11 track extra heavy double vinyl version. The clean and vinyl formats have two entirely different bonus tracks and all three have their own individual artwork, so true collectors will think nothing of owning them all. "MSI are, to me, how punk rock should sound in the 21st century: abrasive, brilliant, and sounding like no one else"--Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly). "...one of the most creative and genre-swirling outfits on the scene"--Serj Tankian (System Of A Down).

Okay.... gotta say it... SHUT YER COMPLAINING ABOUT THE 'TIME TOTAL' OF THIS RECORD!!!!! You are all giving me a headache! Now, lets talk about HOW GREAT THIS ALBUM IS!!! Its what got me into MSI. Before I heard them, I DIDNT EVEN LIKE MUSIC. But when I took this cd from my friend and downloaded it to my comp, I literally fell in 'like'. Sure, it took me a few listen(s) to really get into it ((regarding the fact that I never really listened to a specific band before)) but ever since, I cant stop obessing! 'Shut Me Up' (the first song) is rawsum and to this day I can still listen to it twenty or more times in a row.

So, basically, this must be a GREAT/AWSOME/RAW album if someone like me ((like one of the pickiest people out there)) got into it. MSI is truly an addiction for me. After listening to them, I got FGWSSS, Straight to Video Single, and most of their other songs from cds like 'Tight' you cant find in most stores. Heck, Im listening to 'Thank God' right now. In fact, the other day I went to their concert!!!

All in all, if you are looking for something disturbingly freaky and original you can find it with MSI. Check this cd out dispite what other 'picky' people say. Who cares, I WOULDNT BE WRITING A REVIEW IF THEY WERENT THIS GREAT!!!!

1 out of 5 stars this band sucks.......2006-07-11

my god what has the world come too....this bad is so called unique...hell thats becasue they suck worse than anyone else before them....total insult to rock/metal. This is pop.

If you like the whole new wave electro rock thing than listen to The Faint instead. Similar style of music without the crappy vocals.

4 out of 5 stars Great album but very poor and underhanded marketing!.......2006-03-12

I'll break this review in to three parts. First, the review of the album itself. Second, the review of the tactics used by MSI and Metropolis Records to sell this album. Lastly, my advice on getting everything that should have been included on one album.

1. The review of the album:

Simply put, if you like previous MSI albums, Babyland or stuff like Korn you'll eat this up. It's another top notch hybrid electronic, punk/metal, lofi quasi-hip hop, quasi-post-industrial genre-bending album. I suppose this would have fallen in to the label "coldwave" circa mid-90's post-industrial labeling. It's not exactly coldwave, not exactly anything other than the sum of its influences, which seem to be mainly hip-hop, post-industrial and punk/metal. The highlights of the album are definitely "Shut Me Up" and "Stupid MF", although there isn't really a weak track here. Another bonus is a positively weird cover of Rush's "Tom Sawyer". Be sure to put the CD in your computer as there is a video for "You'll Rebel To Anything" (it's a neat collage of old 50's propaganda footage mixed with weird cartoons, vintage stock film interspersed with just general weirdness.)

2. Commentary about questionable gouging of consumer by label/band:

There is absolutely no reason for there to be three different versions of this album except to rip off the consumer. Period. In an interview Jimmy Urine said they released a clean version for people who couldn't buy the album in places like Wal-Mart. Who cares about Wal-Mart? For someone so outspoken and inspired by punk, it bothers me that he'd cave to pressures to release an edited version of anything, let alone an entire album. That leads me to believe it wasn't an effort to cater to the imbeciles who buy music at Wal-Mart but rather a flimsy excuse to release a different version of the album, with different artwork and different bonus tracks.

When I used to buy a lot of electro/industrial (circa mid-90's) I remember this type of crap burning the hell out of me. I'd buy the import of a particular artist (say, someone like Haujobb) and then a year or so later a domestic version would come out with bonus tracks. And it'd cost LESS to boot! So all the "early adopters" and people on the cutting edge would get burned over and over. I can't tell you how many CDs I bought like that when I used to buy a lot of obscure electro/industrial music. It's a trick in order to separate you from your money, nothing more. If they cared only about exposing underground music to a new audience then they'd simply license the album and release it exactly as it was originally in Europe. But I digress.

3. My advice:

Buy this explicit version, then download the bonus tracks "La-Di Da-Di" (bonus track on vinyl) and "Mic Commander" (bonus track on clean version) off teh intarweb and say fsck you to Metropolis Records/MSI for forcing us to buy three versions of the same album in order to get two extra tracks, different artwork and a bonus video (the clean version of this album has a "bonus rehearsal video for 'Diabolical'"). Alternately, if you feel like giving MSI more of your hard-earned money, you can at least get the track "Mic Commander" on iTunes Music Store by itself.

In summation, MSI are a great band and if you like punk, electro-industrial, metal with electronic influences (Fear Factory), hip-hop, nu-metal, coldwave/aggro-industrial (Ministry) then you'll probably totally dig this album.

Also, check out Jhonen Vasquez's video for "Shut Me Up" on myspace (or just do a google search for it). The ex-Johnny the Homicidal Maniac/Squee/Invader Zim/etc. mastermind pulls off one of the funniest videos in a long time.

2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars the dead are breathing birthday balloons.......2007-06-27

The first time I ever heard Cloud Cult I looked up a few of their songs online. Their music didn't really strike me, it didn't stick out. It was good, but it wasn't anything great. I looked them up because a good friend of mine who usually has the same taste in music as me told me I would like them. I was attending a show of theirs at Macalester College in St. Paul a few days later and I wanted to get a taste of their music first. All I have to say is if you ever get a chance to see Cloud Cult live, take it. Take it. Take it. Take it. The band has such great energy on stage and everyone involved in the show was so warm and friendly. I talked to the woman at the CD stand and we had a discussion about Cloud Cult's usage of recycled paper for their CD inserts, and how everything Cloud Cult does and makes is environmentally friendly. Their music is amazing in real life, and the fact that they have two people painting throughout the whole ordeal is really cool, too.

Now onto the music, the CD "The Meaning of 8" which I'm sure is the reason you are reading this right now. You want to know why you should buy the CD, why it's anything special, etc. etc.

Cloud Cult is like no other band I've ever heard. Their music is innovative, inspiring, and most of the time, it's fun! I really enjoy listening to Cloud Cult because their lyrics are creative and intelligent. A lot of Cloud Cult's music is inspired by Craig and Connie's loss of their child Kaidin (Craig is the lead singer and main songwriter, Connie is one of the artists). This is the basis of the song "Your 8th Birthday" and Connie writes in her bio on their website:

"Cloud Cult is a uniquely beautiful entity created and shaped by my
husband Craig. Many of Cloud Cult's songs are intensely personal to me.
They are literally our journey through grief and loss. I find sadness
and beauty in them and look forward to each new song and look forward to
each new day. Life is truly a gift!"

The lyrics on "The Meaning of 8" are also based off of their personal beliefs involving spirituality, relationships, life, and nature.

My favorite songs are probably Chemicals Collide, Take Your Medicine, and Please Remain Calm. The CD is really good at the beginning, and as it nears the end the music gets a little blander. But with 19 songs total, I guess you can't expect every one of them to be mind-blowing.

I'd suggest looking up their lyrics online and listening to the song excerpts to get a taste of Cloud Cult's music before you buy the CD. Craig's voice is beautiful, but it's very unique, so I can see how it wouldn't appeal to some people. The strings are beautiful and can add a haunting effect to the music. The harmonies on some songs are also very well-done. It's not the most musically sophisticated CD ever, but Cloud Cult does a really good job of incorporating different sounds, and manipulating them to make beautiful music. This is one of my absolute favorite CDs. "Advice From the Happy Hippopotamous" which is their other CD is really good, but I definitely think this one is better, so if you're looking for some Cloud Cult, between the two, I'd say pick this one.

4 out of 5 stars Floating on a musical cloud.......2007-03-17

One of the most interesting musical finds I have had in quite some time; this is not your typical indie band...not by a long shot. Cloud Cult and the band's self-created record label, Earthology Records have shunned major label attention and continue to work from their geothermal energy powered organic farm as a not-for-profit music centered environmental and philosophical movement. Not exactly the normal indie band bio.

One reason Cloud Cult has remained independent is the band's dedication to being eco-friendly. Concert tours are made "green" by countering CO2 emissions from travel with acres of tree planting, purchasing wind power credits to power the stages and equipping the tour van with solar panels.

In the early 90s founder and front man Craig Minowa was pursuing his degree in Environmental Science and doing every sort of odd job (Including dressing up as Barney the dinosaur for children's parties) to stay afloat while pursuing the music dream. His first release was under the name The Shade Project in 1995. Such was the budget that Minowa used pots, buckets, couch cushions and whatever else he could find to make sounds for instruments he couldn't afford.

In 2000 Minowa released Who Killed Puck as the Cloud Cult. But without any funds to market the album his financial situation became worse. His son, Kaidin, was born shortly after, marking Cloud Cult's transition away from live performances and into strictly a studio band. Minowa spent most of the next two years focused on his family and environmental work. In 2002 his son unexpectedly died and his marriage crumbled in the wake of that grief. At that point Minowa threw himself completely into music as a way to deal with the tragedy. Five years later the Cloud Cult is a fully formed touring multimedia experience with six albums to their credit. Side note, Minowa also reconciled with his wife and she tours as a visual artist with the band.

No doubt the Cloud Cult has an interesting and unique story which brings us to their newest album The Meaning of 8. Imagine what would happen if The Flaming Lips and The Decemberists decided to join forces, maybe throw in Neutral Milk Hotel and Beck as well. Stylistically the band reminds me of The Cure. Vocally Minowa has a lot in common with Robert Smith and many of the darker guitar sounds take me back to those gothic Cure discs.

Beautiful strings abide in odd harmony with crunchy guitar and electronica. Hip hop and dance beats flow into acoustic guitar. Somewhat off-kilter melody dissolves into bell parts. It is dense and intense, constantly changing and totally engaging. There is no one style here; it truly is a bit of everything. But instead of being distracting it somehow works together very well. Not many artists could pull this off.

According to the band, the lyrics on The Meaning of 8 compare religions and philosophies from around the world with Carl Jung's theories of universal symbolism and the collective unconscious. That statement sounds incredibly heavy handed, but in reality the mood of the disc, while always intense, is not preachy or over the top. It never seems oppressive.

For example the song Take Your Medicine offers up; "You can take it in stride, or you can take it right between the eyes / Suck up, suck up and take your medicine / It's a good day, it's a good day to face the hard things." The song has it all; a great hook, relentlessly catchy music and interesting harmony with a killer middle eight full of bells and chimes.

I would be remiss if I didn't also mention Cloud Cult's 2005 release Advice from the Happy Hippopotamus. It is every bit the equal of the new release with a slightly more dance beat, hip hop fuzz sound. I can't really say which disc is better; they both are really very good. My advice is to buy them both, you won't be disappointed.

San Francisco's Black Rebel Motorcycle Club weren't exactly shy about their taste for early `90s UK rock (Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Stone Roses), influences that freely permeated their debut and Take Them On, On Your Own. But Howl argues that B.R.M.C. understands how such devotion can often be a creative straightjacket, stripping their songs bare via almost exclusively acoustic arrangements that variously evoke gospel-tinged Appalachia and gritty country-blues ("Devil's Waitin', "Ain't No Easy Way," "Restless Sinner"), gentle, mouth-harp seasoned folk ("Fault Line") and vocalist Peter Hayes invoking various ghosts of Dylan past on "Still Suspicion Holds You Tight," "Promise," and "Complicated Situation." Indeed, in everything from its music and Allen Ginsburg-inspired title to the LP-deriv! ed running order and artwork, it's an album whose retro-'60s counter-culture vibe may be no less original than their previous musical obsessions, but one whose strong, mature songs and dedicated performances can't be denied. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars BRMC's departure into folksy blues... a fantastic trip.......2007-07-25

It's easy to understand why long time fans of BRMC would be put off by Howl. This is hardly their usual sound. If you bought the CD expecting the full on Brit rock sound they usually play, you were bound to be disappointed.

For me, on the other hand, this was my first foray into the world of BRMC. I ventured here based on the description of the sound by other Amazon reviewers. In fact, I hesitated getting this recording because in researching the band I learned their typical sound was so different. I wasn't quite sure what I would be getting. The delay proved to be pointless.

This is a tremendous recording of country blues and folk and a few other less easily classified treasures. It would be difficult to express how much respect I have for this band. To throw off their usual trappings and sound and to produce such a mature quality recording in an entirely different genre is just a remarkable feat. They do what they normally do as well as anyone, but they prove they are more than a one trick pony here. They do this sound with an ease and comfort that is quite amazing. They get this style of music. It sounds like it comes from their soul.

From the grinding rhythms and well-placed grunts of Ain't No Easy Way, to the Dylanesque Complicated Situation, to the beautiful if melancholy hidden Open Invitation, these guys are completely on target. There is an informality befitting such a record on several tracks. It's like the boys got together with their instruments and just started playing, with foot stomps, hand claps, shouts and laughs to boot. In addition to the wonderful music, the lyrics are a full complement. There is a maturity and depth to the words of these songs. Heck, even the packaging is fairly ingenious. It has the appearance of a vintage vinyl record. The CD itself is black with an appropriate script and the back cover has the track listing split into sides 1 and 2. It suits the style of music well.

To BRMC, more please. I am ready for Howl 2 (call it what you will)!

5 out of 5 stars Music to cherish.......2007-07-13

This album is so gorgeous, words will not do it justice. You just have to hear it & keep listening to it to uncover what is hidden in these seemingly simple, mostly acoustic gems. There are many highlights, such as opening track, "Shuffle Your Feet", complete with harmonized vocals, stomps, hoots & hollers. This is a terrific way to get the listener's attention. Another highlight is "Ain't No Easy Way Out", another stomper shouting about the perils of love, and yet another highlight is "Weight of the World", which laments the difficulties we all must face up to in today's complicated world. Slower boilers such as "Fault Line", "Restless Sinner', and "Devil's Waitin'" are simply guitar and voice and sometimes harmonica, and are the type of songs that could be soundtracks to a good ole boy's life. There are 2 songs where BRMC truly sound like Bob Dylan: "Complicated Situation" and "Still Suspicion Holds You Tight" and these songs are masterpieces, but the 2 songs that make this album worthy of 5 stars are "Sympathetic Noose" and "Promise". "Promise" may just be the most beautiful song ever written by anyone. It is that gorgeous. This song could be Peter Hayes singing to anyone beloved to him: family, lover, the Lord......at times the words sound like he is comforting a dying a friend. It is so delicate yet powerful and emotional, that is easily the finest song recorded in this decade. It is the apex of this beautiful collection of Americana songs.

3 out of 5 stars Security.......2007-06-26

Simple -- Great album, more to the blues than to the J & the Mary Chain. The security sucks --- I played it on my computer once and now it will not let me play it there anymore --- and the computer is where I spend more than half my waking day.

1 out of 5 stars Is it possible to digress artistically?.......2007-05-22

Bummer, dude. These songs sound like pale rip-offs of "Brian Jonestown Massacre." Why listen to this album when you can hear the real thing elsewhere? Black Rebel Motorcycle Club sounds like Charlatans UK without the Hammond organ, or the talent and songwriting ability. Only buy this album if you find it in the discount bin for $0.99. It's easily forgettable.

4 out of 5 stars wow much better than their last.......2007-04-17

I love the first album but the second one really disappointed me. Probably cause my expectations were so high. This cd hardly sounds like the same band but I love it. BRMC take on a much more laid back acoustic sound and they do it well.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

It would be easy to dismiss B.R.M.C. as another bunch of Britpop wannabes. Their amalgam of fuzzed-out vocals and chugging guitars over layers of droning feedback immediately brings to mind the Jesus and Mary Chain and Primal Scream. But the band's wanton attitude easily compensates for its lack of originality. Plucking its name from the Marlon Brando classic The Wild One and digging deep into its weathered copy of Psycho Candy for lyrical inspiration, the leather-clad San Francisco trio picks up where Oasis left off--pillaging the past, regurgitating it shamelessly, and making it sound exciting and dangerous in the process. Imagine the sheer audacity that goes into writing a song like "Whatever Happened to My Rock & Roll (Punk Song)"--all Stooges agitation and Beach Boys melodies--and backing it with a blissful Stone Roses homage called "Awake." They're not the best at what they do, but right now they're all we've got. --Jaan Uhelski

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Solid, moody release. .......2007-06-30

Definitely very catchy with some excellent tracks. Very listenable indie style recording, dark in places, energetic in others. I saw these guys live in mid-2007, and it's pretty clear that there's some very heavy voice dubbing on their recordings. Frankly, they sound like Jerry Lewis when they sing live - very high pitched, whiny voices compared to the recordings. They don't have bad voices at all; it's just a bit irksome when you expect one thing and go to a show to hear something vocally pretty different. Instrumentally the show was great and I'm not trying to argue they're bad singers - they just need some testosterone shots or to stop dubbing the recordings so much...

5 out of 5 stars still the best one.......2007-06-09

While I like all BRMC releases...this one is still the best.

5 out of 5 stars BRMC is amazing.......2006-12-14

I bought this album at Jared from Kings Of Leon's insistence, and I was not disappointed. In fact, I came to realize that KOL were no longer my favorite band, it is now BRMC. They are the most amazing collective to ever come out of well, anywhere. My best friend and I love them so much that we're now convinced their albums are "biblical" and listening to them is our form of church. Easily the only band that matters.

4 out of 5 stars a well-executed nod to Jesus and Mary Chain.......2006-04-13

This CD is actually quite great in its own right but unfortunately it really does sound too much like Jesus and Mary Chain. To the band's great credit, all of the tracks are strong and 98% of bands out there can't ever achieve that goal. The studio recording is exceedingly well-done too. The signature droning bass can make portable ear-buds distort the bass; so these tunes are best heard on a good soundsystem that can handle the bass.

If you like UK bands like Loveless, Stone Roses and Jeses and MC, you really should give this one a try.

5 out of 5 stars This band knows what's going on.......2006-03-22

If anyone has every done any psychodelic drugs out there (and I know there's a few you that have), you will immediately recognize this band's angle. The album comes in slowly, becomes intense, and leaves as slow and easy as it started. Each song is a new feeling or idea that becomes intense and wrapped up in emotion. The music captures perfectly the pace of life, and how we as humans deal with life. The lyrics are just simply brillant.

More poised and less self-conscious after two years of continuous touring, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club has taken a huge artistic leap forward with their second album, stripping away much of florid guitar work and anxious drumming featured on their self-titled debut and replacing it with a sleeker sound. On their previous disc, you could barely make out their enigmatic and half-formed lyrics buried underneath the feedback and thick psychedelic swirls, but they've fixed all that and have turned out a collection of tetchy but intelligent post-modern protest songs that are a huge departure from their earlier compositions about the capricious nature of love. Titles like "Stop," "Six Barrel Shotgun," "(Kill the) US Government" crackle with anger and confrontation, much like MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" was to earlier generations. No longer sounding like Jesus & Mary Chain retreads, BRMC has carved out their own niche by combining dark poetry with a sharp disgust with the way the world is being run. --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars Just buy this right now........2007-05-25

BRMC are the best of the newer bands around today. So just buy this now if you love rock music that is dark, loud and very very beautiful. This is their second release and as good as anything they have done before or since. All the potential from their first is realized here. Not a bad song on here. Half the record is a complete classic for the genre, the other is just extraordinary. Forget what you have heard about JMAC rip off's, false false false. This band is consistant, talented and are like no one else. Live they are the absolute finest. All the attitude of punk, all the musicianship of classic rock and all the melodies of english pop (stone roses, primal scream , new order et all). I urge you catch this band before they are gone. A must buy!

4 out of 5 stars Love this album.......2005-12-26

Great record. One of the best I've heard in the last years. Lots of attitude, lots of great guitars and an overall great sound.Includes some glorious moments like "In like the rose" "Rise or fall" and "Heart and soul". You can tell they worked hard on this one. It's ALMOST perfect because a couple of tracks could be skipped, that's why I give it four stars. If you are looking for a consistent pop-rock album this is what you need. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars why did this bomb?.......2005-11-15

this is a superb second album from the leather rockers
with the guitars distorted and fuzzy and the vocals clear yet murky ad lyrics expressing love government and pain what more could fellow fans want not much in my opipion this should of been thier first album not their second oh well
highlights include
stop[the bass driven single]
we're all in love
us government
and i'm only aching
suddenly
heart and soul

classic future album from a band who hasn't got the belief they deserve

5 out of 5 stars Love It.......2005-07-06

I love this band and its darkness and the way they deliver the music. They have lot of faded out/fuzzed vocals and the music dial is up. Every song is alive with music and alive with power driven guitar. A lot of people would relate this band to other bands like The Strokes and some other garage bands. I see the relevance, but I don't really like those bands that people would associate BRMC with...I think it's because BRMC offers something different. If you only like pop and soft rock, then don't even waste your money. This is not "nu-metal" (at least i don't consider it to be), this is not "emo" or "screamo". This is not your average mainstream band and I don't think they get the attention they deserve.

Standout tracks for me:
"We're All in Love" 8/10
"In Like The Rose" 9/10
"My Generation" 9/10
"US Government" 9/10 (a lot of people will like the guitar work in here)
"Suddenly" 10/10 (a softer song but well managing of the rock and a melodious song)
"Rise or fall" 9/10 (the vocals and music really hit you)

5 out of 5 stars Motorcycle Club rides again!.......2005-04-24

This being their sophomore effort, BRMC had to have had a lot riding on "Take Them On...". Cutting right to the chase, they surely did not disappoint with this endearing outing. It is filled with much of the same melodramatic poetry and captivating sound that defined them thus far.

The leadoff track and single, "Stop" is not only the best on the cd, it was the track that started it all for me. I quickly immersed myself into the sensuous BRMC world, bought this cd and remain floored since then. Other really great tunes include the roaring "Six Barrel Shotgun", the tranquil "Shade Of Blue", and the epic "Heart + Soul".

Ride on with this cd, you'll be relieved afterwards.

As a testament to his own hard work ethic, Jacob Dylan has continued to record in spite of the lack of spotlight. With the release of his fifth disc, Rebel, Sweetheart, the singer/songwriter's dedication to the classic rock genre is again self-evident. Influences ranging from Springsteen's E Street Days ("God Says Nothing Back") to Tom Petty ("All Things New Again") ultimately reinforce Jacob's deep love of classic acoustic rock. The first single also happens to be one of Rebel, Sweetheart's strongest. "The Beautiful Side of Somewhere" is indicative of the younger Dylan's songwriting tendency to write with a darker pen; a tune begging the dark times to depart doesn't usually make for strong radio play, but the expansive musical swell at the track's end is one likely to bring new fans to the gates. The DualDisc version of the CD offers fans a 30 minute performance film, including reworked versions of "One Headlight" and "6th Avenue Heartbreak" as well as an amusing band interview with comedian Jon Lovitz. --Denise Sheppard

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful album with stunning lyrics .......2007-06-18

Jakob Dylan's lyrics and music are mind boggling and he stands aside other greats such as Chris Cornell and Roger Waters\David Gilmour. An example of one of the many great albums by these artists:

1. Jakob Dylan - Rebel Sweetheart

2. Roger Waters\David Gilmour - The Final Cut

3. Chris Cornell - Superunknown

5 out of 5 stars new throwback.......2007-06-08

3 out of 5 stars Just not the same..........2007-01-06

I've listened to this album over and over, but I just don't like it that much. It's a shame because the Wallflowers have always been one of my favorite bands. However, the sound is too different-- it's too separated from the lullaby sound of the other albums.

Only good track in my opinion is #7, although it's not his typical sound, it's very catchy. It's been in my car CD player for months, but everytime I turn it on I wish I had one (any!) of his older CDs in there instead!

4 out of 5 stars The Rocking Political Album.......2006-06-13

The Wallflowers have always been underrated, even during their Bringing Down The Horse days, but even more so they are never given the deserved credit of being more versatile then they let on. It's true that they've always followed the folk-rock blueprint, but if you truly listen to each album; you'll realize that they have a more varied pallet then most of their peers. With the band's fifth album, Rebel, Sweetheart, this revelation might actually dawn on people. While 2002's Red Letter Days is arguable their most musically diverse album, most listeners would think that the album is an exception. With this latest release, there's no denying that they treat each album as its own entity. This time, the Wallflowers come out blazing with a political force that is both inspiring and humbling, and a set of songs that grows on you with every listen. The album opens with the fiery "Days Of Wonder," which blisters into "The Passenger," on of the most interesting and irresistible songs in their catalogue. The rush continues to swell through the first single "Beautiful Side Of Somewhere" and "Here He Comes (Confessions Of A Drunken Marionette)" (the most powerful Wallflowers rocker since "Some Flowers Bloom Dead") finally melting into the slower "We're Already There." Needless to say, this is possibly the most consistent and engaging opening to a Wallflowers album since Bringing Down The Horse. The album is full of excellent songs, both rockers (like the pseudo-punkish "Back To California" and the chugging "All Things New Again")and ballads, not to mention the album's haunting centerpiece "God Says Nothing Back." Not only does this song essentially summarize the whole album, it speaks out in prose that few politically charged songs do these days. This is arguably the most profound song they have ever recorded and it will resonate after the first listen. While this may not have the immediate appeal of the classic Bringing Down The Horse, or the sonic and lyrical genius of (Breach), Rebel, Sweetheart displays and urgency not found on any other Wallflowers records; this is a call to arms, and the band has never sounded more alive, nor rocked as hard, after this near-masterpiece, the sky's the limit.

2 out of 5 stars You know, I wish I liked this album.......2006-02-01

I will admit, the only other album I've heard from the Wallflowers is Bringing Down the Horse, which is undoubtedly their most commercially successful album. That album has songs with strong melodies and lyrics that are intriguing and make you think. This album, though, has a few good songs - mostly "the Passenger," "Beautiful Side of Somewhere," and a few likeable ones that I can't remember right now. The local radio station played "God Says Nothing Back" as the second single, but the lyrics just seem very cynical and I'm not quite sure what he's trying to say about God, death, time and love except that you get burnt by life. Not very poetic if you ask me. Generally, the lyrics are wordy and a bit too much, which might be OK, except that Dylan has the lousy habit of mumbling too much. The lyric sheet is there, but I don't have the patience and time to read it with every listen, as the lyrics are obviously important to the songs. But too many of the lyrics are obscure and elusive. I'm sure he's trying to say something, but I'll be damned if I know what it is. He mumbles a lot of the words and the production is generally murky and indistinct - too many of the songs are not memorable. Some albums like this will grow on you, but I just got annoyed with this album more after each listen. Sorry, I doubt I'll give this album another chance.

With a permanently snarled upper lip and the perfect matinee-idol blond hair, Billy Idol made punk rock palatable for MTV and the masses. He did so by watering down punk's aggressive attack with dance grooves and stretches of keyboards where no self-respecting punk would've dared. Essentially, he made pop music with a spare razor blade tossed in for fun. When it clicked, as it does on the anthemic title track of this, his career highlight, well, only an anarchist could complain. "Eyes Without a Face" and "Flesh for Fantasy" are two other early '80s radio stapes found here and they went further to establish Idol as a potential Vegas balladeer. This reissue contains some worthwhile demos. --Rob O'Connor

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing remix.......2007-07-15

I have two audio cassettes of the original version of this I purchased in thrift stores. I wanted to see what the deal about Billy Idol was. I learned to like him.
I'd have to dig out a tape to be sure- but I don't remember the reverb/echo being so strong. I could run the original thru my old stereo guitar effect unit and give it this sound. Or my TV surround stereo could do the same.
Re-equalizing (tone) and gratuatis reverb DOES NOT a good remix make.....
All could have been well, but cheaply applied effects (REVERB)...
Do NOT a good remix make.
Get the original.

5 out of 5 stars 1984. Dead of winter..........2007-04-16

Riding bus no. 34 to Junior High School. Glad to have the seat with the "hump" on the floor (the wheel well.) Rock n' roll cranking and crackling through lousy, tinny speakers intended not for music but for telling rowdy adolescents to sit down! Under the din of kids insulting each other, name-calling, farting, and chatting about what was on TV the night before hummed "Rebel Yell." If you had a hump seat, you were close enough to the speakers to hear the music.

Everyone knew who Billy Idol was. Most of us were too young to remember Generation X but we'd all loved "White Wedding" (c'mon, the video had coffins and other dark stuff.) There was a cool aggression to "Rebel Yell," a fitting theme for kids starting to separate from their parents but still "shackled" to home and school.

As winter gave way to summer, "Eyes Without a Face" was part of the summer soundtrack for the rock n' rollers that included the hits from albums like 1984 (Van Halen), Pyromania (Def Leppard), Out of the Cellar (Ratt). Fading to fall, Idol titillated with "Flesh for Fantasy," perfectly suggestive for us sex-on-the-brain teens.

Rebel Yell was (and is) brilliant because it fell neatly between the hard but approachable sonic rock of Van Halen and the edgy, snarly attack of the Sex Pistols (or probably more accurately, Billy's old band, Gen X.) More than just rockin', Billy clearly wanted his fans to dance, putting just a splash of disco into the songs. While being of the 80's, and sounding like it, the album is one of those rare pieces that sounds great 20 plus years after it was made. It should be on every "top 100" greatest albums of all-time lists.

5 out of 5 stars Billy Idol's sophomore effort goes multi-platinum!.......2006-09-20

This CD contains the original nine-track line-up(at least in the US) plus a few bonus tracks. Oddly, the defunct LP is labeled sides 3 and 4,since this is Billy Idol's second album. 1986's WHIPLASH SMILE LP would be labeled sides 5 and 6. How strange, don't you think? This sophomore effort went multi-platinum since it spawned four Top 20 hits, the title track,EYES WITHOUT A FACE,CATCH MY FALL and FLESH FOR FANTASY. The other tracks are great. Idol's Chrysalis labelmates include Huey Lewis & The News,Pat Benatar and Blondie,

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC Good old Billy.......2006-08-02

Fantastic CD yet again from Billy Idol. Every song is a gem, with no week tracks. Rebel Yell is probably one of the greatest Hard Rock songs of all time. I strongly advise anybody that likes this CD to purchase all of Billy's stuff, you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars generally well-written, sometimes devastatingly rockin', but often overproduced.......2006-07-12

This second Billy Idol album, 1983's "Rebel Yell", finds his guitar wizard sideman Steve Stevens taking an increasingly prominent role in the proceedings. Stevens only got a couple co-writes on the debut; here, all of the original album's tracks were written by Idol & Stevens apart from a lone Idol solo composition ("Catch My Fall").

Stevens is one those guys that they reserve the term 'guitar hero' for. Yes, he's extremely flashy, with a penchant for outer space sound effects. But what's even more striking is his versatility and his knack for blurring the lines between lead & rhythm guitar--just look at his shimmering guitarwork on the verses of the irresistibly funky and lustful "Flesh For Fantasy".

The album sets an incredibly high standard for itself right off the bat. The uptempo minor-keyed title track is spellbinding--the chorus is raging; Idol does his trademark alterations between a baritone croon and blood-curdling screams; Stevens riffs away frenetically; and the chimey synths don't water the song down at all, in fact they help make it even edgier. The part where all the instruments fall out except for the drums, then it slowly builds all the way back up, with Stevens' chilling, atmospheric guitarwork--that's rock & roll nirvana.

The moody "Daytime Drama" does a great job of keeping things intense while also shifting gears--it mellows things out a bit, yet still rocks, with an infectious bass line doubled on keyboards and later played on electric guitar. It kinda craps out at the end, unwisely modulating to a major key, but still a heck of a good track overall.

"Eyes Without A Face" is where the overproduction trap starts to really rear its head--primarily a ballad, it's quite pretty actually, with really nice chord changes, but it gets carried away with distracting electronic percussion; plus the 'rocking' mid-section feels underwritten and out of place. The watery synths on the chorus of "Blue Highway" give a distressing mid-'80s corporate rock feel to a song that already sounds pretty generic in the first place. "Catch My Fall" is also arranged unflatteringly, with bland synthesizer, saxophone, and drowned-out rhythm guitars. And the original album's last track, "The Dead Next Door", is a dreary, tedious mood piece.

Still, the snappy uptempo rocker "(Do Not) Stand In The Shadows", with a neatly textured intro, is a definite keeper. And the mid-tempo rocker "Crank Call" is amusing.

As for this 1999 "expanded edition", the 5 bonus tracks add a lot of interest to the proceedings. The 'original demo' version of "Catch My Fall" is much better than the album version, bringing out its true potential--it loses the dull keyboards and saxophone and brings out the rhythm guitars which give it a '50s rockabilly feel. The 'original demo' of "Blue Highway", despite being the rather low fidelity, is also preferrable due to the absence of the annoying synths on the chorus. The 'session take' of the title track certainly isn't as powerful as the album version, but still, it's welcome to hear it in a relatively stripped-down form, plus the lyrics are a bit different, as is the arrangement which hadn't been perfected yet. And the 'session take' of "Flesh For Fantasy" is MUCH different than the album version; again, it's not as good, feeling rather disjointed, with much of the mid-tempo funkiness gone in favor of an uptempo rock feel, plus a different chorus, but it does spotlight Stevens' ringing guitar work which is a real pleasure to hear.

On the downside, the remastering on this 1999 reissue strikes me as being somewhat poor. I mean, if you've got an equalizer on your stereo, you can kinda even things out and you really won't have a problem. But the sound is kind of muffled, and compared to the 'leaping out of the speakers' sound of the 2002 reissue of Idol's self-titled debut, the difference is striking.

So, all in all, despite the frustrations, this is a highly worthwhile disc.
