For Collectors Only.......2007-04-02
Yet another live performance from the near classic line up and one for the collectors only. Everyone knows from the "Strangers In The Night" album that UFO put on a great live performance but the repetition is starting to get boring. Do we need to keep hearing the same old classics re-hashed several times over on one collection? With such a vast catalogue of songs this compilation perhaps missed the chance to show off to the full and produce a live career defining review (as Rush always seem to manage to do quite well with their live stuff). Instead we have a four disc set, the first two discs of the Vienna concert being fresh and very good, the other two from Cincinnati and Cleveland being Bootleg quality, terrible sound and not very listenable. I find myself buying these for the unusual tracks like the live version of "Gettin'' Ready" and dispensing with the umpteenth versions of "Doctor Doctor" or "Rockbottom". An expensive hobby!
The "Walk on Water" songs sound best on the first two discs 'Live in Vienna'. Although the performance is fraught with mistakes the sound quality is good and encapsulates a lot more raw power than "Strangers" (even if it is in effect another copy of the 'Werewolves of London' set).
Reviewers seem to be confusing the 4 disc set with the 2 disc set. I also own the two disc copy (Vienna only) which is better value and worth considering if you don't want everything they ever recorded. I play the 2 disc version in the car while I keep the 4 disc set under wraps as a keepsake. This is a nice addition to any UFO collection but I still prefer "Strangers in the Night" for it's perfection.
Fantastic Live UFO Set.......2006-03-17
Not sure why this live set got bad reviews(?). It's simply fantastic!
Sure, it's no "Strangers In The Night" - but considering that Michael Schenker is in this great raw mix of shows makes the set special to me. I can't get enough live UFO featuring Mr. Schenker on Guitar.
This set offers Fantastic Guitar and Phil Mogg's vocals are dead on. Highly recommended for any fan of live hard rock music.
This glass is half empty.......2004-03-09
This release is for the diehard, UFO completist (such as myself). Otherwise, only half of this release is worth getting. The first 2 discs (recorded in Vienna) are from the same tour that produced the "Werewolves In London" release. If you liked that release, you'll enjoy the first 2 discs.
The true UFO fan will recognize this recording from the bootleg, "Will You Please Welcome From England...", that circulated soon after the 1998 tour and included most of the show from the soundboard (the first 3 tracks were from an audience recording).
The third disc is most likely from a low grade cassette tape, recorded from someone's home stereo and played once too often in a bad car stereo on a hot summer's day. The sound is harsh, mono and unbalanced. You'll only listen to it once. This show was probably a WMMS Coffee Break Concert radio broadcast. WMMS put on several concerts from the Agora Ballroom. If this is so, where is the master tape? Most of those Coffee Break Concerts have been popping up in trading circles. In fact, there is a complete June 9, 1982 UFO Coffee Break Concert in circulation from the master tapes.
The fourth disc is a bigger disappointment. IT IS FROM AN AUDIENCE RECORDING!!!! You can forgive them for trying with the 1977 tape. But we would hope soundboard tapes would have been available from their 1995 tour. Instead, what we have is something that should have remained in trading circles. There are digital pops, dropouts and bad edits on at least 4 of the tracks.
For the casual UFO collector, I would stick with the 2 CD version of this release containing only the Vienna show.

Strangers Revamped.......2007-04-02
Reviewers seem to be confusing this 2-disc set from Vienna with the 4-disc box set. This copy of the Vienna concert is good value and essentially the best part of the 4-disc version (in effect another copy of the 'Werewolves of London' set). Two thirds of the stuff here is just "Strangers" revamped, notable additions being the "Walk on Water" tracks which are performed really well live. Even though the performance is fraught with mistakes the sound quality is good and encapsulates a lot more raw power than "Strangers".
This is a nice addition to any UFO collection but I still prefer "Strangers in the Night" for it's perfection or the "BBC Sessions/Live In Concert" from earlier in their career.
Another good live CD but a bit unexpected..........2005-09-19
The sound production is soundboard. I don't think this recording ever saw the inside of a studio for editing. Having said that, it is a pretty good soundboard recording. It has a very raw appeal to it with a bitter mixing of the bass, which was really lost on the "Werewolves of London" CD. It is well balanced for the most part and sounds very different than most live CD's you'll find. It literally sounds like you're right in the bar in Vienna, Austria where it was recorded. It was performed at a small venue.
The setlist is awesome. It has all the classic tracks and the best from "Walk on Water". I say the best from Walk on Water, but Walk on Water doesn't really have a bad song. The whole CD is good. Overall, although "Strangers" is more professionally recorded, Live in Vienna is somehow very appealing. At this point, it is my UFO CD of choice, had I to pick one. Everyone in the band sounds pretty good and the UFO classics do not lend themselves to anyone but Phil Mogg on vocals. He does well.
UFO !.......2005-08-05
Wow! Quite simply, this album rocks. The band is in fine form and Mogg's voice in top shape. Sound quality is excellent. One knock on this album is Rock Bottom. My most beloved UFO tune pales here in comparison to the Strangers version IMHO. On RB, Herr Schenker seems to be noodling around with some harmonic notes rather than just ripping. Just a minor complaint really. Rock and roll like this never goes out of style. Loved the disc one, track one "Faith Healer' intro tribute to The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Highly recommended.
This is a two disc set. Other reviewer's were discussing a third and fourth disc? Must have been repackaged since the reviews.
Could Be Their Best !.......2005-06-29
If you love UFO Live (Strangers in the Night). You will never play it again after you hear this CD. It could be their absolute BEST!
Best live since 79........2004-11-02
Easily the best the band has sounded live since "Strangers in the Night". Problem is it could be a better recording. I'm not talking remixes just quality. At times it sounds like a soundboard recording. But.... Michaels playing is really good with some very weird but hot licks (maybe it was the French Impressionist mustach and black hair he was sporting)
Definately worth buying.
