Perhaps you remember these guys from the early 80's. Or you may remember them from Slayers' punk cover full length in which they covered five Verbal Abuse songs. Either way this was the first full length done by Verbal Abuse. Its a total hardcore master piece right from the early 80's. Speed, anger frustration and rage all made this full length what it is.

After many years of this being out of print Beer City has once again made it available to the masses. Not only does this CD contain the original 'Just an American band ' full length but it also contains a set live from a show that they opened for The Ramones! In this live set are a few songs that have never before been recorded by Verbal Abuse. Not to forget all the power and adrenaline you get to experience from a live show.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

William Bolcom is my kind of musician. He writes music that is sometimes adventurous but always based in a recognizable American idiom. And he's a terrific ragtime pianist, the best Joplin player I've heard. With these credentials, of course he's a wonderful Gershwin player. These are the best piano performances of Gershwin I know. After you hear those, Bolcom joins his wife Joan Morris for very flavorful versions of 10 George and Ira Gershwin songs. The whole disc is a delight, and the original analog recordings still sound fine. Highly recommended to all Gershwin lovers. --Leslie Gerber

Peculiar.......2005-01-26

I can see how someone might enjoy this album. William Bolcom is a top-flight pianist and the idea of playing the tunes as George Gershwin played them at parties is intriguing.

Because my ear is used to it, I guess, I would like to have heard longer performances of fewer songs. Each one sounded to me like a snippet -- over too soon. Because of that, plus the fact that I'm not a fan of Joan Morris' showy voice, I give the album one thumb up.

Gershwin Never Sounded Better!.......2002-06-25

This is a fantastic CD! Back in the 70's, pianist William Bolcom and his singer wife Joan Morris made a delightful series of albums on the Nonesuch label of old songs from the first half of the twentieth century - just glorious voice backed by brilliant piano. As Ira Gershwin might say - who could ask for anything more? The music is not only beautifully performed, you can hear the joy of the performance in every note. And Bolcom and Morris were never better than when doing Gershwin.

A combination of two albums, the first part of this CD is all piano. The Gershwin Songbook consists of brief (some under a minute) versions of some of his more popular songs in the way that Gershwin himself famously played them at parties. They demonstrate that Gershwin was as gifted a pianist as he was a composer. The other instrumental tracks are some of Gershwin's solo piano pieces, including the wonderful Rialto Ripples, a rag written when he was just seventeen. For me, the pinnacle of both Gershwin's and William Bolcom's artistry is reached on the second of the three preludes - a classic study of a bluesy mood.

Just when you think things can't get any better, Joan Morris arrives. She effortlessly sings and swings her way through ten of Gershwin's best songs from the cheeky comedy of By Strauss to the smoky moodiness of Someone To Watch Over Me. Maybe I'm just an incurable old romantic, but the ballads are the best of all.

Pretty Heavy-handed stuff here.......2004-03-04

Again, I think altissimo! is going over the top here with the raw patriotism bit. Sure we should be proud of this country, but there does reach a point where it becomes too much and is embarrassing. That point is reached here with this mixed bag of recordings pulled in from over the place, many already released from Altissimo! before and just re-packaged here. If you don't mind patriotism served with a lot of relish then this CD is for you.

Beautiful and inspiring..........2003-11-07

It might not be everyone's cup of tea but One Nation Under God is a beautiful ode to patriotism and the United States of America. There isn't a clunker in the 20 songs on the album, not surprising considering you get things like Nearer My God to Thee, God Bless America or Amazing Grace. A fantastic job by the various military bands who contributed to this effort!

"One Nation Under God" is a great compilation of inspirational patriotic music, superbly performed by truly world-class musicians.
The selection of music was excellent, and very much in keeping with the title and the theme of the album. The opening recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Senator Thompson, underscored by a most respectful and reverent lead-in to "God of Our Fathers", perfectly set the stage for the well-appointed and majestically performed music that followed.

Several pieces evoked solemn contemplation and reverence, leading to others of pride, majesty and tribute, all arranged and played with proper respect and appropriate to the theme "One Nation Under God".
This is a magnificent and timeless album that will hold a prominent spot in my collection, and be often enjoyed.

This CD is absolutely awesome ! From the opening of God of our Fathers with the Pledge of Allegiance by Senator Fred Thompson to the final note of Taps, I could not stop listening. This collection of patriotic and inspirational music is a must for all Americans. As an ex-Navy man and Viet Nam veteran, the strains of The Navy Hymn sent chills up and down my spine. It brought back so many precious memories. This collection of 20 songs is a bargain at any price !

Amazing Collection!! Patriotic Music all on one CD !!!.......2003-09-24

This CD is definately for people who are looking to get some uplifting patriotic music for listening to at home, the office, for parades, barbecues, and ecspecially holidays like the 4th of July. Its got all of America's greatest hits including "The Star Spangled Banner", "Amazing Grace", "America The Beautiful", along with other less well known gems such as "Godspeed", and "Pslam for Band". All of the songs are played excellently by the US Marine, Navy, and Air Force bands. The label that put out this release, Altissimo Records actually specializes in military music, so if you like this check our their other releases. Overall Highly Recommended!!!

Their live album gives the listener a chance to hear the players truly perform. I loved Chuck's comments before each piece, which were informitive and entertaining. The last track, Boy Mozart, is a piece that I will remember for a long time.

This is one of Vocalion's latest re-issues of two original recordings made by Mantovani and his Orchestra in 1960. It pairs the folk songs of the "American Scene" composed by Stephen Foster and others, along with concert gems, all brilliantly arranged by Mantovani and his collaborator Cecil Milner. Stephen Foster's time-honored music appears to be having a comeback these days and so will the utterly appealing orchestral interpretations given to these chestnuts by the masterful brilliance of the Mantovani sound and the artistry and discipline of his musicians. Some 45 years ago, Mantovani's American Scene LP remained 30 weeks on Billboard's Top 40 List and rose to a high position of number 11. Listeners now, as then, will enjoy the melifluous string-laden arrangements of Beautiful Dreamer, I Dream of Jeannie, My Old Kentucky Home, Grandfather's Clock, and Goodnight Irene, and they will tap to the lively, full orchestra arrangements of Camptown Races, Ring de Banjo, and Turkey in the Straw. The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

A let down.......2004-09-24

I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. Perhaps you remember these guys from the early 80's. Or you may remember them from Slayers' punk cover full length in which they covered five Verbal Abuse songs. Either way this was the first full length done by Verbal Abuse. Its a total hardcore master piece right from the early 80's. Speed, anger frustration and rage all made this full length what it is.

Nice for historical purposes........2006-01-28

Ah, brutal early 1980s punk. The memories come flooding back. Being more of a mid to late 1980s child I missed on these guys. Slayer's Undisputed Attitude CD introduced me to them. I'm glad I bought this.

In typical punk fashion of that era, as the previous reviewer states the recording is crap. Beer City while all appropiate cheers for rereleasing this effort. Jeers on the fact that sure as hell sounds like it is from vinyl - remaster or no remaster. Couldn't get access to the source tapes?

Irregardless, its a minor annoyance. This album is comprised of the studio LP and a live show. I'll admit I like the live stuff better. Mix is better and you get to hear the band stretch a bit. Studio mix is harsh and midrangy. The instruments don't pop out at me all. Details aren't there. Its just a schmorgasborg of noise. I'm not expecting Rick Rubin level stuff - but I thought it would be better.

The material is fun. I can see where these guys could make an impression live.

Thats what to get this disc for, the studio stuff is just a bonus.

We ( the label Beer City) did not simply burn this cd from vinyl to cd. Remastering was done.

Below Average Early 80's Hardcore.......2004-12-06

You're probably looking here as a result of listening to Slayer's album, "Undisputed Attitude" (1996). Slayer covers most of this album and does it in such crushingly brutal style, that the songs bear very little resemblance to what you'll hear here (assuming you don't heed my warning and waste your money buying this). The studio tracks sound flat and whiney, while the live ones are a little punchier, but easily annoy with instruments and vocals randomly cutting in and out.

Verbal Abuse was somewhat popular in the early 80's hardcore punk scene, but they were less than mediocre as compared with their peers of the time. They play in the "Nard-Core" style, sounding similar to most bands released by Mystic Records (Ill Repute, Batallion of Saints, Dr. Know, etc.). Originally released in 1983, the production by today's standards is poor. To make things worse, it sounds like Beer City simply burned this straight off the vinyl.

HARDCORE..........2003-08-29

this sf based hardcore band was already broken up by the time i was hitting my first punk shows in the bay area in 84. too bad i never saw them as this cd along with mdc's first album are the hardest, fastest punk to come out of the bay area in the first half of the eighties. unbeleivable that this came out in 1982 (by the way, slayer covers a few of these songs on their punk tribute album which isn't very good but the VA songs are!)

Short and NOT Sweet!

In case you're wondering why this is only going for $2. for new copies from secondary dealers, is because it wasn't worth the $16.00 it originally was priced at! What a SHOCK when I got this home from the store and put it in my machine!

I gave it away in a grab bag at work!

All I can say is: "Miss Horne, I am so sorry that you allowed this to be released...it's worse than the stuff that Callas/Di Stefano did at the end."

Poorly edited CD; dishonest?.......2001-08-26

Very poorly-edited CD; I can't believe that it was "Released by arrangement with the Gerorge Gershwin Estate", as the booklet states. Consider the following: Upon playing the CD for the first time, I noticed that Track 4, "Grievin' For You" was actually was the same as track 11, "Make Believe". Naturally, I was quite surprised that this error wasn't caught pre-release. I was also disappointed, since I was looking forward to hearing "Grievin' for you". Also, in the booklet it states that track 14, "An American in Paris", was recorded in 1928. I was hoping to hear a historical recording when in fact the track contains a stereo recording of the piece, and is thus in all likelihood a post-1957 recording. I wrote to the publisher of the CD, TKOMagnum, but have not received a response. Let the buyer beware!
