Sequentia here performs a miracle of musical restoration, bringing to vibrant life medieval Icelandic texts about gods and heroes inhabiting a mythic past. Drawing on oral traditions and informed scholarly speculations about long-dead performing styles, they have come up with a hypnotic disc that startles with its power and beauties. The songs and recitations are interwoven with captivating fiddle tunes, and the singers wrench surprising emotions from the old texts. The late Barbara Thornton shines in her solos and duets, and Benjamin Bagby's mesmerizing chanting, recitation, and singing brings us as close as we're likely to get to sitting at the feet of the bards of old. An extraordinary disc that shouldn't be missed. --Dan Davis

Sings to my DNA.......2007-02-17
While it's not unusual for me to have several different recordings of the same work by different performers, this is the only case in which I have two identical CDs, one for home and one for the car. I have to assume my Scots-Irish ancestry has some Nordic blood, as this music affects me powerfully. I haven't even read the program notes, so it can't be that the text's mesmerizing. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if mead is your drink, it's perfect.
Pretty Good.......2007-02-01
There are some really awesome moments on this disc. All of the Voluspa segments, especially the final one describing Ragnarok, and The Song of the Mill are very well done. The stark atmosphere serves to not only enhance the singing portion, but really draw you into the song. The booklet that comes with the CD is essential, with beautiful translations of the poems that put Caroline Larrington's Poetic Edda to shame.
But there are also a lot of weak moments. I can't say that there is anything interesting in the instrumentals, which are fortunately few and far between. The Tale of Thrym is ok the first time through, but loses it's appeal very quickly. Odin's Rune Verses lack emotion compared to the rest of the pieces.
I also found the Italian Opera style singing a bit imposing. The rolling of the r's is sometime distracting, and I wondered the first time I heard it if that's what the language really sounds like. Of course, this is my first exposure to Icelandic, so I really couldn't tell you if its right or wrong, but the male singers do it much more than the females. Perhaps it just comes from their background as opera singers.
Overall, this is a good thing to have if you're at all interested in Norse/Icelandic/Viking mythology. If you're not, I think you can skip it.
For the Nordic Soul, an echo across time..........2006-10-23
I thought nothing like this existed, yet here it is! The Sequentia group sings ancient Nordic mythological poems, in very much the manner of ancient Skalds. The skald was a bard, or troubadour, of ancient Scandinavia. In the Sagas, many of the greatest skalds came from Iceland, a land colonized by Norwegians unwilling to live under the dictatorship of King Harald Harfa-gri (Harald Fairhair). The songs on this album are recited in Icelandic, a language that has changed only slightly from the Old Norse spoken by their ancestors. The style of performance is a specualtion, to a certain degree, but very much like that of most traditional Nordic folk music, traditions that have been passed on for centuries.
Medieval Latin? Music.......2006-10-14
For some reason, it doesn't sound quite nordic to me. Did they really roll their 'R's in the Old Norse, or is Sequentia putting a Latin spin on it? It sounds like Italian opera accompanied by medieval Icelandic instruments.
A great tool for learning as well as the musical enjoyment.......2006-07-11
I am impressed by, actually, the insert book! It has 47 thin pages of history, lyrics, and translation.
I bought this CD because the only foreign language I really retain is from foreign music. The lyrics are decently clear for learning. I didn't expect the insert book to have Icelandic lyrics, but it has that and a translation. There is a summary on each of the poems also.
The music is a bit simple, but the real art is in the song. The singing could even go without instrumentation. The album is 76:52 minutes long.

Pretty good!.......2006-07-12
I had lost interest in Enslaved for a long time so when this album came out I didn't pay much attention to it. I saw it one day at a record store and decided to give it a chance. At first glance this doesn't sound much like the old Enslaved but is more similar to bands like Borknagar (which is not bad at all). The songs consist of black metal riffs accompanied with a lot of melody. The vocals are sometimes black metal rasps and others clean sung. This album never fails to catch your attention and it's a very rewarding listen.
Dark, dismal and atmospheric .......2006-04-08
I haven't heard all Enslaved albums, but of those I've heard, Isa strikes me as their most challenging and absorbing. Their songwriting is heightened to levels the band never reached before, with a broader vision of combining their roots of Norwegian black metal with more progressive elements. With Isa, Enslaved have set themselves apart from most other Viking black metal acts, utilising varied guitar riffs that border on avant-garde at times, both black and death vocals, as well as clean-sung deep voices, and perfectly nuanced synth work. Dennis Reksten's keyboard playing on the album is thorough and lends it a very distinct atmospheric vibe.
There are several guests on this album, all contributing to its diversity and success. After a dark intro and the first song "Lunar Force", highlighted by excellent black shrieks, pummeling drums, great breaks, varied soundscapes that even touch on electronica; the title track is presented with unexpected clean vocals and screams mixed. A bit like the last Arcturus album, the song features Nocturno Culto from Darkthrone, who also appears on the longer and more atmospheric "Bounded by Allegiance". This is a song where ominous synths are married with crushing riffs, plenty of time changes, and chanting vocals that recall the mid-90's beauty and the best type of bands where the male growlers started doing gothic vocals. However, it's not too long before black screams take the lead until a bluesy rock solo emerges out of nowhere, adding to the diversity of the album. There are so many aspects of Isa that characterize its sound. From drawn-out instrumental passages (best heard on "Reogenesis") with fearless blues licks to cold, dismal black metal experimentations and cinematic elements.
"Ascension" is possibly the broadest track on the album, guesting both Ofu Kahn of Red Harvest and country singer Stig Standbakk. Standbakk's vocals are amazing, providing a good contrast to the heavier, more extreme singing; but it's also the hammering drums and fierce guitar riffs that render this cut more interesting than the others. Stanbakk also sings on the acoustic-driven track "Return to Yggdrasill", with occasional extreme vocals and electric leads, and probably the best drumming on the albm. "Secrets of the Flesh" is a great instrumental, loaded with lots of interesting sounds and oddly-timed signatures.
All put together, the songs make up Isa, one of the best Enslaved albums, if not the best. It should be in your interest to check out both Arcturus and Akercocke's latest albums for similarly multi-textured, diverse tracks encompassing elements of death, black, prog, and even avant-garde.
Haven't really been into BM in a while..........2006-04-05
But this could very well bring me back in, at least to some of the more prog'ish bands. This album is awesome, tons of atmosphere, tons of rock and very progressive and of course plenty of those Black metal notes. Most likely the best Black Metal band out there today, or at least one that's aging well.
Ascension to new heights. .......2006-02-16
ENSLAVED - Isa
-
Continuing in the steps of `Below the Lights', Enslaved return with another progressive, black-metal masterpiece. Seldom do I do play by play of the tracks, but this album more then deserves and accurate description.
After the opening intro the album launches into Lunar Force, a song with trance-inducing guitar riffs, precise drumming and subtle piano with tortured screams adding the sense of urgency... The song gracefully progresses to the five minute mark then is followed by about 40 seconds of eerie synth feedback, then slams aggressively back into the opening riff then fades out with some beautiful piano patterns.
The title track, Isa has a similar hypnotic guitar pattern, yet this time blending the screams with some clean channel vocals... A very passionate track for being a little over 3:30.
Ascension opens with some odd ambience and by the 1:15 mark sounds like King Crimson has gone Black Metal. (I believe I even heard some tambourine...) Singing is strong in this track, sounding at times almost like Mike Patton from the darker FNM days.
Bounded by Allegiance opens brilliantly with organ, chugging guitars, and building drum beat. The 2 minute intro flows into a subtle softer part before unleashing some older influenced melodic, black metal. This song continually progresses with lots of variations (Both faster and slower) throughout this track and even throws a classic prog guitar solo to close out this track.
Violent Dawning is a furious track, likely the most consistently fast track on the album. It showcases some really nice drum work, both kickers and his symbol work. Also for being such an aggressive track they do not forget the dark melodic beauty... The last 0:40 with the haunting vocals and keys sounds amazing. (One of the most moving parts on the album...)
Enslaved is has a knack at grabbing your attention right from the get-go, Track 7, Return to Yggdrasil, is no exception. Opening with powerful riffs and venomous vocals, however by one minute into the song it has quickly unfolded into dark majestic beauty. Overall a very beautiful track...
Secrets of the Flesh opens with a very progressive rock sounding riff with what sounds like wind blowing (Creates a really cool atmosphere...) This riff builds for the majority of this track, staying instrumental throughout the 3:40.
The 12 minute Reogenesis is the magnum opus of the album, opening with some softer beauty before going into a powerful, old-school BM riff. This songs flows and builds throughout the entire 12 minutes... showing as much beauty as brutality and is filled with some great guitar work... This fades into the outro track which is just shy of one minute.
Amazing Album from start to finish easily on of the Top Metal Releases in 2005 (looks like I will have to update my Best of 2005 list)
Though Black-Metal is a genre I'm really just beginning to explore I can tell you that this CD is so much more... At times reminding me of Amorphis or maybe even Katatonia. Also, they are comparable to the genre-bending Opeth, though they really sound nothing alike.
Just some food for thought but I wonder if they could get Steve Wilson (Porcupine Tree) to produce their next album.
[Actually I just read the other day they just completed recording their latest album which I believe is going to be called `Ruun' which I think is coming out in May?]
Favorite Songs: Violent Dawning, Ascension, Lunar Force and Reogenesis

Isa.......2006-02-11
Enslaved bring a lot to the table with their latest offering. Here we have an incredibly dark album that is still so full of color. The introduction sets the atmosphere for what you're about to get yourself into. There is some very soft humming for a few seconds and suddenly it kicks into a mid-paced riff with tortured screeching. It builds up for a minute then pummels you with a powerful wall of sound. Doesn't that sound dramatic? This album is chock full of drama. I almost feel safe to compare some moments of this to Ulver's first album. I know a lot of purists who would disagree with that statement, but the musicianship is there with Enslaved. These guys are good. If you're ready to see the lengths Black Metal can be taken to, by all means, pick this up.

The Final Golden Ancerls.......2006-01-04
Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon will know of my love for Supraphon's "Gold Edition" Karel Ancerl CDs. Well I recently picked up the final six volumes in this collection (vols 37-42) and I have to say they are as delightful as the first 36 sets. Volume 37 features Ancerl and the Czech PO performing Jiri Pauer's Concerto for Bassoon & Orchestra (1949), and Isa Krejci's Serenade for Orchestra (1948-50) and Symphony No. 2 (1956-7). The recordings were made in 1956, 1957 and 1963 respectively, with only Krejci's 2nd Symphony in stereo. Ancerl was best known for the music of his native country and for showcasing the works of 20th Century composers, so it is only natural that he championed the modern Czech music presented here. All three pieces prove a challenging listen, but they are thoroughly enjoyable. In all, this title is part of a fitting to conclusion to a great series and a great conductor.

Lovely and radiant music.......2006-03-22
This is an absolutely gorgeous collection of songs sung by the lovely Soile Isokoski in her native Finnish. She is famous for singing lead operatic roles (particularly, Mozart) all over the world, but hearing her sing these very spirtual and radiant sacred songs is a special treat. Included in this album is a booklet containing the words of the songs in Finnish, plus the English translation, and background information on Finnish sacred music and the included composers. I particularly loved selections # 8 Kotomaamme - Our Homeland (Here Beneath the North Star) by Ilmari Hannikainen; and #15 Herraa kiittäkäämme! - Let us Thank the Lord! by Olavi Pesonen. You don't have to understand Finnish (and especially, thanks to the booklet) in order to enjoy this radiant music. The booklet notes that Finnish sacred music from the 19th and 20th centures,as featured here (as opposed to the late 17th century devotional music) is more akin to Lieder, and is often included in core repertoire and various festivities. This music is uplifting and simply lovely to hear.

I first heard a track while listening to Spinner.com and liked it so much I bought the cd. A strong, sensuous voice. Makes you want to get up and dance on every track. This cd is a winner and I can't wait for another one from this wonderful talent.
Viva La Gordita!.......2000-05-03
As a lover of salsa music, this is a fanatstic CD! If you love Latin music you will love this work. The music is invigorating, and the vocals are sensuous and smooth! Buy this CD, you won't regret it! Viva salsa, Viva La Gordita!
Every track is wonderful...A star is born...Viva Salsa!.......2000-03-16
La Gordita Del Sabor is fantastic. My absolute favorite track is Te Amare but is rivaled by Isa's rendition of Andy Gibb's "I Just Wanna Be Your Everything". Her voice is beautiful, strong and entertaining. Watch out Latin music here comes a force to be recognized. Best of luck to the artist.
