Krokus - 'Change Of Address' (BMG) 2 1/2 stars.......2005-03-25
'Change Of Address' looks to be Krokus's tenth lp.Even though it's not as good as their 'Hardware' or 'Headhunter' releases,'Change...' isn't all that bad.I guess I just more or less favor the Swiss metal outfit.Total of nine cuts here and I liked "Buring Down The Night",their so-so cover of Alice Cooper's "School's Out",the somewhat cheezy "Hard Luck Hero" and "Hot Shot City" the best.I suppose that unless you're a major Krokus fan,you might not get that much out of this disc.Line-up:Marc Storace-vocals,Fernando Von Arb-guitar,Mark Kohler-rhythm guitar,Tommy Keiser-bass and Jeff Klaven-drums.
Krokus' Finest Moment.......2005-01-28
While this Krokus album is the one everyone loves to hate, I feel otherwise. Since they never were a real first tier metal act, they always wanted to be something other than what they were. Krokus went through a long ACDC sound alike period, then went through a Judas Priest sound alike period. Finally, on Change of Address they sounded like Krokus, and it is a superior album.
Slickly produced with a crisp clean sound throughout the album, it features nine pop metal tunes. Of course due to their constant identity crisis, Krokus always had to put a cover song or two on each album and this one features the classic "Schools Out" by Alice Cooper. I never understood that about Krokus. Instead of taking catchy little known tunes by other artists and covering them and making the tune their own, they always covered a bands biggest hit, and thus their version would always pale in comparison to the original. To their credit, the eight Krokus originals on this CD are much better songs then the Cooper cover.
"Now", "Hot Shot City", "Burning Up The Night", "World On Fire", Hard Luck Hero" are all mid tempo, commercial, hooky tunes. Any of those songs could have been radio hits, but none of them were. The albums finest moment is the beautiful song "Say Goodbye", featuring a reggae like intro, a fantastic solo and terrific vocals. Lyrically the song is about growing up and going out into the world on ones own while never forgetting the family you leave behind, and how this same cycle repeats itself every generation.
In conclusion, "Change Of Address" is much maligned recording that is actually Krokus' finest moment. Why? Because they finally sounded like Krokus.
The Best Krokus Album, NOT the worst.......2004-11-08
I disagree with the negative reviews on this album. This album features a lot more creativity than other Krokus albums. Yes it's more pop-metal sounding, but hey that's what most people like. For example, Krokus' popular songs from other albums are the more pop sounding ones, ie. "Our Love", "Screaming in the Night". Also, the guitar work is excellent on this album, despite what another reviewer said. One song features a solo by Alan Holdsworth. And I dig the syth work, nicely done. Buy this one, it's great.
Change of Address? More like No Such Address..........2004-09-02
I was always a big Krokus fan, but Change Of Address almost drove me from the ranks of Krokus fan forever, when it was first released. It is pure crap! It's hard to think of a hard rock/metal band that put out such a pile of garbage after some strong albums. Perhaps the Scorpions', Savage Amusement is in the same league. First of all, Krokus again go the route of the cover tune. This time the Alice Cooper classic "School's Out" gets the Swiss treatment. It's okay, but hardly innovative. After this tune, however, there's not a decent song here. Synth drivel, & boring, dumb lyrics. The guitar playing is weak, which doesn't matter because it's buried under the syntho-slop. Marc Storace puts in a half-hearted effort vocally. It's as if the band knew this thing was bad from the start. If all this isn't enough, the album cover is among the worst ever- and this is from a band that has an awful lot of bad album covers. Just avoid this.
The end for Krokus?.......2003-02-03
"Change of address" is nearly pop metal. On this one Krokus is much more polished than on earlier efforts and it's sad to say but the material is rather weak. A song like "Let this love begin" have we heard a million times from "pop-metal-hair-bands" like Bon Jovi or Cinderella. It follows the blue print for the ballad every metal band at the time had to include on their albums. The cover of Alice Cooper's "Schools out" is okey and so is "Hard luck hero", but the highlight is "Say goodbye" - a song very similar to their own "Tokyo nights" some years earlier.
Take my word, this album is not worth 4 stars. Buy "Hardware" instead!

What's not to like about contemporary music?.......2006-07-08
Ever since I first heard Javelin, I have looked for more recordings of Michael Torke's music. I resisted old recordings offered at a very high price after some effort and was delighted to find this collection containing a wide perspective of his work ranging from the color pieces (Green, Cool Blue Music, Ecstatic Orange) to the vocal Proverbs to the utilitarian tool music. Don't miss it.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable disc!.......2004-01-02
I am a big fan of Michael Torke. His music tends to be upbeat and his compositions put a smile on my face. For those who enjoy so-called 'minimalism', there is a decent chance that you will really enjoy Torke's music, and find his unique orchestrations and compositional techniques to be invigorating and original. Now, there are certainly many people who would not enjoy this music at all... I hope my brief words here can help you to figure that out for yourself (if you are new to his music, of course) That being said,
The fist piece 'Overnight Mail' is awesome, I love the instrumentation here (lots of smooth brass and sultry saxes) and the music is catchy and fun. One of his best pieces in my opinion, it is wrought with the rhythmic dynamicism and melodic ingenuity that I have grown to love, and has a sort of 'late-night out in the city' feel. (I was living in San Francisco when I bought this disc, hehe)
The rest of the disc is good and, at times, great. The last piece, change of address, has not grown on me all that much, though I find it to be novel at least. 'The Yellow Pages', the part of 'Telephone Book' that existed on its own originally, is probably one of Torke's most well known chamber works and it is very charming.
Another reviewer commented on the (perceived) superficiality of emotion in this music... It is true that Michael's music tends toward the blatantly positive/cheery side of things emotionally - I believe, however, that the emotions conveyed are genuine. Perhaps some of us are more able than others to embrace this kind of transparent, high-frequency positive energy. (Understandably so). I admit that there have been a few times when i popped a Torke CD in and found it to be completely obnoxious... (but I attribute those instances to temporary losses of sanity)
Fear of Being Demonstrative.......2003-02-08
I bought this CD and listened to it probably twenty times, trying to figure out whether the music is intentionally emotionally superficial or not. I still listen to it occasionally and still haven't come to a conclusion. I'm not certain that I would buy any more music by this composer, because I'm not quite certain who this composer IS....
If you like Torke..........2001-04-28
You'll love this CD.
On the other hand, if you don't like Torke (after all, with him it's mostly a love-hate thing) you won't like this CD. It's as simple as that.
It seems that people who slam this CD aren't really slamming the performance, they are slamming the composer.
If you don't like Minimalism (aka "broken record music), you won't like Torke, and therefore you won't like this CD.
But if you have an open mind about the music, and judge it for what it is, you'll find that this is a very accessible performance, and one worthy of immortalizing on compact disc.
And as a classical saxophone player, I found the recording of "July" a special treat... it's tough to find decent quartet recordings in mainstream stores!
Torke's best works on one CD!.......2000-03-09
This compilation really shows what Torke is capable of. His chamber music is generally excellent, and "Telephone Book" is intelligent, well-crafted, and well performed on the CD.
In my opinion, "Overnight Mail", with its jazz roots, really plays a supporting role to "Telephone Book". It makes for easier listening, especially in this performance.
The other works on the CD, while not in the same class as the title work and "Telephone Book", are by no means unbearable. All round, this CD is a gem, containing Torke's best chamber music, with great performances.
One of Torke's best works.......1999-04-30
"Overnight Mail" is an accessible and well-crafted work. While it is simple enough to be enjoyed on first listening, its form and development are complex enough to stand up to repeated listenings. The unique ensemble of Orkest de Volharding provides the perfect sound for this piece. While I do find some of Torke's music to be rather bland, "Overnight Mail" is a piece I can reccommend without hesitation.
"Telephone Book", "July", and "Flint" are also interesting in their own right, but "Overnight Mail" is the real star of this collection.
"Change of Address" is the only thing that prevents me from giving this CD a 5-star rating. Unlike the other works on this CD, it is generally lackluster and uninteresting.

Album Description
One of today's best-known and best-selling composers, Michael Torke has taken over all of his recordings formerly released by Argo/Decca Records and is re-releasing them on his own label, Ecstatic Records. Michael Torke has created a substantial body of works in virtually every genre, each with a characteristic personal stamp that combines restless rhythmic energy with ravishingly beautiful melodies. Torke wrote The Yellow Pages while he was a graduate student at Yale, and from this early effort many of his signature compositional techniques were codified. Change of Address is a suite from Torke's so-far unrecorded opera King of Hearts. Last fall, the boxed set of Michael Torke's complete recordings was picked by The New York Times as one of the Top Classical Albums of the Year.
