If one needed an object lesson in the fickle nature of Hollywood and its precipitously shifting tastes, one could do worse than to examine the career of the songwriting brothers Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman. After inventing veritable swaths of Disney's musical theme park, TV, and film legacies in the '50s and '60s (including Zorro, The Sword in the Stone, Mary Poppins, and The Jungle Book), the brothers found their talents largely underemployed in TV and film efforts after the death of Walt Disney. It isn't to say that their talents were in the least diminished, as this soundtrack to the 1976 U.K.-produced live-action adaptation of Cinderella ably attests. Fans of the Shermans' Disney canon should find this soundtrack restoration a welcome addition to their collections. The Shermans' music is a familiar, effervescent delight, even as it tackles the full emotional spectrum of romantic and familial entanglements, from Prince Edward's existential ponderings in "Why Can't I Be Two People?" through the king's Gilbert & Sullivan-esque take on royal bureaucracy in "Protocologically Correct" to the romantic pinings of "Secret Kingdom" and "He Danced with Me." The Slipper and the Rose is a musical cult favorite, and for good reason. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars I love this!.......2007-01-14

I love this soundtrack! If you are a fan of the movie, you will really enjoy this. There is only one disappointing thing about this soundtrack.

While all of the songs with words are there, most of the background music is missing. There is the overture and the waltz theme, but no other background music. I was particularly disappointed in the absence of the music from the wedding.

Despite this, I am very glad I have purchased this CD and high recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars a wish come true.......2006-11-04

I'm so happy this soundtrack is no longer out of print. The movie is one of my favorite musicals and all the music from the movie is wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Memories Return.......2006-06-24

This has to be one of my favorite musicals. And that's saying something. I remember watching the movie with my mom when I was little. When I purchased and played the cd, that all came back. Mom and I busted out singing, "Protocoligorically correct", practically cracking up through half of it; and enjoying the romantic theme "He/she danced w/me"!
The sound recording was well pitched, loud enough to hear, and there wasn't anything fuzzy. This I was very grateful for. I look forward to one day playing it for my daughter so she'll enjoy it to.

4 out of 5 stars Prince Charming and Cinderella.......2005-09-11

I know the beautiful movie and I wished to have the soundtrack. Now I bought it and I am happy. It is a great CD, the actors give the best and the music is very romantic. I recommend the CD.

5 out of 5 stars EXHILARATING! ENERGETIC! ENCHANTING!.......2004-07-11

THE SLIPPER AND THE ROSE is a most EXHILARATING CD, with crisp, catchy, tunes that cause one's heart to be made cheerful! "Why Can't I Be Two People", "Protocologorically Correct", and "Position and Positioning", are songs that I have found marvelously ENERGIZING! I work in a stressful medical environment, and on a dreary day, I slipped this CD into the office CD player, to discover an amazingly, invigorating phenomenon. The stressed out office staff began whistling and humming the tunes....a few even danced down the halls of our clinic, which can be a bit disconcerting when you have specimens in both hands. As the employees got happier, attitudes and energy levels soared! It was exciting to watch the merriment as staff sang and danced along to "Suddenly It Happens", and "What A Comforting Thing To Know". The love songs sung by Richard Chamberlain and Gemma Craven, "Secret Kingdom", "He/She Danced With Me", and "I Can't Forget The Melody", are hauntingly romantic songs, guaranteed to ENCHANT even the hardest heart. This is one of my favorite CD's of all time. The Sherman Brothers outdid themselves; creating a masterpiece that EXHILARATES, ENERGIZES, ENCHANTS.......and occasionally, on a dreary, stressful day, causes the heavy hearts of listeners, to be transformed and ultimately to transcend.

5 out of 5 stars The Secret Kingdom.......2003-07-11

Cloaked in darkness and mystery but majestic in scope The Secret Kingdom is a very impressive piece of work, with a medieval feel that could almost be soundtrack for a movie such as The Mists of Avalon.

This is my favorite darkwave album and I must confess, it is not as consistent as the previous darkwave (DAMM) albums I reviewed, and unlike the other albums this does have a few weak songs, however, I feel the good songs are so good they more than make up for the weak ones.

So who the heck is Avrigus? Avrigus is another male / female duo (aren't they all), Simon Gruer and Judy Chiara and they are from down under. Sydney to be exact. Simon was originally in the band Cruciform (I never heard of them either) and he either left or teamed up with Judy as a side project, I'm not sure. Judy (she's the girl) does very pretty vocals and doubles up on keyboards/piano and acoustic guitar. Simon does the same plus drums and bass. The Secret Kingdom is their first full length album and it is over 57 minutes long. As you can see the song credits belong to Judy.

As I alluded to and the reason I only gave this album 4 1/2 stars, is the weakness of several songs. Tracks 4, 6 and 9, all the three minute tracks are irrelevant so I just describe them briefly. A brief description of the of all the songs follows:
"Overture" as the name implies it is a big lush introduction that sounds like the Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra (I think there's one), after starting out slowly and atmospheric and gradually building up tempo, which actully leads into track 2, Solitude/Salvation. Great song

"Solitude/Salvation" starts out sounding more contemporary for two minutes, then slowly making the switch to big lush sounding ending with keyboards. Great song

"Dark Angels' Ascension" - "When the fires of hell have burned to the core/ and evil deeds are done no more/ then the earth shall heave with a mighty roar/ as angels of death to heaven shall soar". So begins this remarkable song with double keyboards, and double and triple track vocals and stormy sound effects. Great song

"Veritas" A simple melodic song with Judy singing in single and double track accompanied only by guitar. OK

"Qliphoth" - "Take the pick and dig thy grave" This is a sinister, ominous song sung initially by Simon (who doesn't sing that well), with acoustic guitar accompaniment. Judy and the keyboards join in on the chorus'. good song

"Desolate" another sinister song, an instrumental I can't describe that really belongs in a movie score. forget it

"Flesh" another big production song with Judy singing to heavy piano and organ melodies. "Take these hooks from my flesh / cast across the ring of fate / By the fire in thine eyes". Great song

"Til Death Do us Unite" Heavy piano intro for two plus minutes until Judy sings, off and on alternating with piano / organ music for the remainder. very good song

"Shade of my Heart" another strange instrumental interlude. OK

"The Grail" easily the best song and worth the cost of the album alone. eight plus minutes of pure beauty, I love it! "Should I follow my heart to the ends of the earth / would I find in time what a life of truth is worth?/ embracing emptiness / embracing loneliness / forsaking the fortress in quest for the holy grail" I wish I could describe sound, genius, magnificence but I can't, probably less than some of you. This climax is truly a masterpiece, containing Judy's lovely voice, gorgeous piano and drum accompaniment along with Judy singing in the background as a chorus, organ and guitar interludes.

I have checked numerous independent reviews and the consensus was that "The Grail" is the best track and all but one (I'll never read his reviews again, I wish I could remember who he was) gave good to glowing remarks.

Would you like this album? Probably not, unless you already like Darkwave/DAMM music or possibly if you like Enigma/ Dilerium/ Changelings or if you like gregorian chant music. You have to have taste and refinement like me. Joke, get it? Seriously though, some of you might like it, though I think most of you would think it plodding and boring. I don't even think it's an acquired taste. It's cut and dry, you like or you don't. For those of you who on the fence, this is a GOODY.

Cloaked in darkness and mystery but majestic in scope The Secret Kingdom is a very impressive piece of work, with a medieval feel that could almost be soundtrack for a movie such as The Mists of Avalon.

I know your thinking, Daumco's trying to foist another one of those dreadful, dastardly, double, dreary darkwave (dark, atmospheric, melancholic metal [DAMM]) albums on me again. Well you're right, but too bad, you're here, so you got to read it. I'll make it short, I promise. Besides I've only done four others and three were a trilogy, so that makes two.

Now, if I gave you the impression that any of the other four were my favorite I'm sorry, but you were wrong. This is my favorite and I must confess, it is not as consistent as the previous darkwave (DAMM) albums I reviewed, and unlike the other albums this does have a few weak songs, however, I feel the good songs are so good they more than make up for the weak ones.
