This beautiful, touching cycle of five love songs on poems by Pablo Neruda was composed by Peter Lieberson for his wife, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. They were first presented in Los Angeles in May, 2005. This recording, coming as it does just months after Hunt Lieberson's untimely death, is a fitting tribute to her art. The songs are as arrestingly lovely and moving as are her performances of them. It will be a long time before another singer dares undertake a performance that might try to bring something new to the music. Scored for mezzo-soprano and a bevy of instruments (not all of which ever play at once--flutes, oboe, English horn, clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets, various percussion, harp, piano and strings--the songs are all "approachable" modern music, filled with both drama and a distinctively Spanish flavor. The songs range from a sensual appreciation of the beloved and a fear of separation to a peaceful but very sad evocation: "My love, if I die and you don't." Lieberson clearly composed them with great love for his wife; we the listeners benefit from that love in the direct, candid music and performances. This cycle may just be the Four Last Songs of the 21st century. A must. --Robert Levine
Album Description
This album serves as a profoundly moving tribute to the artistry of mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, who passed away on July 3rd, 2006 after a long bout with cancer, at the age of 52. It is also a testament to the remarkable personal and musical relationship the singer cultivated with her composer husband Peter Lieberson, who adapted five sonnets from Chilean poet Pablo Neruda for this work, jointly commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony.

Extraordinarily Moving Music in Extraordinarily Moving Performances.......2007-05-14
I have rarely been so touched at a deep emotional level as I have been by this collection of five songs written as a passionate gift of love by composer Peter Lieberson for his wife, the mezzo Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, a transcendent artist. Everything about the work -- from the outpouring of glorious sound and passion from Ms Lieberson to the texts by Pablo Neruda to the rich sounds of the Boston Symphony under James Levine playing Lieberson's richly romantic music -- adds to the emotional power of the performance. If one then understands that this music was written during a time when Ms Hunt Lieberson was struggling with the cancer that ultimately killed her, that the recording was made not out of desperation but out of hope during one of her periods of modest remission, and that she died not long afterwards, it makes the experience all the more powerful.
One must add that there are two other similarly nonpareil recordings -- eerily enough with singers who were either mezzo-soprano or contralto -- that are classics at least partly because they were made just before the singers died: Jan de Gaetani's recording of her husband's chamber orchestrations of songs by Mahler and Berlioz (including a heartbreaking 'Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen') Jan DeGaetani Sings Berlioz, Mahler and, of course, Kathleen Ferrier's 'Das Lied von der Erde' Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde / Bruno Walter with the touching dying-away of her last words 'Ewig ... ewig ... ewig'.
One can only hope that Hunt Lieberson, Ferrier and de Gaetani are singing together in Heaven. Ave atque vale.

A fFinal Tribute.......2007-04-04
Lorraine Hunt Leberson was one of those rare singers who sang from her heart
and mind in perfect unity. Her many recordings attest to that fact. This
recording of her husbands composition is a glowing account of there love
for each other and a lasting tribute to their artistry.
neruda songs just right.......2007-03-26
cd took a little long to come, but once it did was in great shape just as advertised. thanks!
A soulful monument.......2007-03-22
I suppsoe one way to describne these songs is that they are of love and fate. Lorraine Hunt sings them magically - full of emotional and vocal force. So heartfelt are the music and singing that I find myself close to tears at times. Added to the impact is simply knowing of her sad fate, which both she and her husband were only too keenly aware of all along. The music is so accessible that I would be surprised if people require many hearings to enjoy it - if 'enjoy' is quite the right word. If you want to be moved by the human heart and the fate it echoes, this is one CD to get.
Only one complaint: the CD is mighty short, not much over 30 minutes or so. But I can't think of what might have been a companion piece unless it had been the Rilke Songs which, however, are already on another CD (also recommended).
Wonderful Music.......2007-03-14
This recording is gorgeous. The texts by Neruda are enchanting, and Lorraine Hunt Lieberson gives a beautiful performance of music written for her.

One Awesome Cd.......2005-05-04
This cd rocks. It has some great songs on it. My favorite songs are Light In The Tunnel/Human Race, Can't Turn Back, Napoleon Sheds His Skin & Lunatic Fringe. My favorite track is Light In The Tunnel/Human Race I remember seeing the video for this on MTV back 1983 and loved it. The two songs together make for one of my all time favorite songs. While Human Race did get some airplay on the radio it was never a top 40 hit. But it should have been. So sould have Lunatic Fringe when it was out in 1981. Can't Turn Back was the second single but didn't get much airplay. This cd has three bonus tracks which are Light In The Tunnel/Human Race, White Hot(From the Don't Fight It cd), Lunatic Fringe(from the Neruda cd).
A Great Album From This Canadian Band !!!.......2004-05-06
Red Rider scored a major hit single with the great "Lunatic Fringe" prior to their 1983 release "Neruda", however, this album was their most mature, stronger overall set of straight ahead rockers with an excellent songwriting flair penned by leader Tom Cochrane. Cochrane's raspy but smooth delivery is superb throughout as the album's first four songs are coordinated one right after the other with blitzing power, style and some frills. The surreal, subtle and smooth guitar intro by the lead guitar of Ken Greer in "Light In The Tunnel" suddenly explodes in "Power" with great musical cohesion by the whole band. The fantastic "Human Race" takes off with a great guitar riff by Greer combined with the depth of Cochrane's vocal delivery. Jeff Jones' nice thumping bass line sets the table for the excellent, kickin' "Can't Turn Back". The mood shifts a little with a slower moving, but well crafted "Napoleon Sheds His Skin" as Cochrane's vocals again shine. The rest of the album is just a little bit uneven but there are some very fine highlights with the cool "Winner Take All", "Walking The Fine Line" and "Crack The Sky" (Breakaway").
The CD also contains 3 bonus tracks. "Light In The Tunnel/Human Race" is a different version combining these 2 great songs instead of "Light In The Tunnel/Power" as on the original album and also works very well. Two of their most popular songs finish the CD, the excellent "White Hot" and the classic "Lunatic Fringe".
This is an interesting album worth owning as you will find yourself really getting charged up from it after multiple listenings. Enjoy!
Dead Neurons.......2003-12-30
Ah, nostalgia. Thats where you take out the bad parts and leave in all the good parts. This recording is a personal favorite of mine so I will try not to taint it with personal rememberances.
Red Ryder definatly has a distinctive sound. It is not for everyone. When I got this album I hated it at first but then I gave it some time and it has become one of my all time favorites.
It harkens back to the days when listening to an album was an event. You ran home from the store got out your headphones and let it rip all the while it is playing you are reading the liner notes. But I digress. If you have been recommended to buy/listen to this album I suggest you give it a try.
Power Rock Supreme.......2003-05-09
Those Canucks scored again with Neruda! I guess the long cold winters gave them plenty of time to perfect their craft. CRACK THE SKY is probably one of the best deep tracks ever. Add that to the hits HUMAN RACE & POWER and you have a must for any rock fans collection. Neruda is a prime example of the supremacy Canada showed in the Rock arena during the 80's
Canadian Rock Music At It's Finest Hour!!.......2002-12-23
This Cd is one definatly for the Collection. To Me this
is Red Rider At It's musically gifted best. Tom Cochrane's
vocals just exploded on sesational tracks like
"POWER(Strength In Numbers) CAN'T TURN BACK, And
NAPOLEIN SHEADS HIS SKIN. The power chords and just the
sheer intensity of the group at it's prime here can
easliy be recognized as a classic rock recording
Canadian style. Along with Bryan Adams's RECKLESS(1984)
AND Rush's 2112(1976) Red Rider's NERUDA(1983) has to be one of
the best examples of how great Canadian Music is and
how such memorable songs can stand the test of time.

Music Poetry Romance.......2007-03-08
Don't be put off by the negative comments judge for yourdelf as I did. I found this by accident looking for some romantic music for my lady and that is exactly what I found. Now I need to see the film. The music conjures up such a feeling, relax listen and enjoy. Imagine moonlight skys, the sea gently lapping along the shoreline, candlelit dinners with the one you love. This will leave you with a warm feeling and if not then you will not know romance. The poetry is warm sensitive and well read, a bonus to the CD.
Il Postino (Le postier).......2007-02-01
Excellent album. En plus de la musique originale du film, plusieurs lectures de poëmes de Pablo Neruda par des acteurs et actrices de renom, sur fond musical.
True Romantic Cd - www.michaelpalmer.net.......2006-12-18
If you are a true romantic, you will love this cd, even IF you are not a fan of some of the famous stars who read the poetry - I know I am not a fan of most of these actors, but it does not take away from the excellence of this soundtrack. If you like this cd, please look at the tv series Beauty and the Beast cd. It is called "Of Love and Hope". It is a must have cd.
lovely!.......2006-09-07
The musical score is haunting without resorting to melancholy. It befits Pablo Neruda's timeless poems. Highly recommended, even if not all of the poetry readings are well executed.
WHAT DID THEY DO?!.......2006-04-01
What is this trash?! This film is beautiful but the soundtrack sucks big time. They should have used the actor who was playing Pablo Neruda to read the poems in ITALIAN! It's a beautiful and romantic language but no..they screw it up with actors from the U.S. OMG! I HATE JULIA ROBERTS! she makes the soundtrack even worse. I spit on this cd! believe me..I would so give this trash 0 stars but amazon doesn't allow it!

Give an objective listen........2005-04-05
I have to start out saying that the other reviews of this CD on the whole are unobjective. The good ones are blindly glowing and the bad ones are vitriol.
Here's a few facts. Souza is a fabulous singer. This is based on SOME of her previous cds and a mesmerizing live performance with Danilo Perez. In my experience Neruda, and most Spanish poetry, does not translate well into English. I received a book of his poetry and found it very bland. I checked with Spanish speakers and they confirmed translation problems. This is a music review however, not literature.
Now for the my review. I like it. The use of few instruments on each song and yet a variety of instruments throughout the cd make it enjoyable and interesting. Many of the other reviewers compared it to Holiday, Vaughn, Acuna and other great jazz/latin singers. I don't think this is a competition and if it was this cd would not be entered in that category. This is not a huge record. It is stripped down, almost stark. If I had to compare it to the performances of other singers I would go for Laura Nyro performing solo or Joni Mitchell.
I am glad to hear something like this because Souza is trying to make an artistic statment, not money. While it has it's failings, for me, it is ultimately more enjoyable than the predictable output of high dollar artists.
Listen to this for what it is, good music of no sepcific target genre. It won't take your breath away, but it will sneak up on you from time to time and make you think or sigh. Give an objective listen.
Quiet simplicity, performed elegantly.......2004-08-25
To begin: I highly recommend this album. But if you haven't heard it, here's what I recommend you do: after you buy it, but before you put it into your c.d. player, look at the liner notes; read the English translations of the Pablo Neruda poems; then read them out loud; then imagine how you might put these to music, if it were up to you; then listen.
These poems are elegant, direct, sadly reflective of life in their breadth, tapping into an endless reservoir of longing and of love. They demand a similarly elegant, direct, quiet and clean treatment; and that's exactly what Luciana Souza gives them in her original compositions.
Luciana Souza has an incredibly pure alto voice that never strains or cracks, and sounds the same regardless of which register she sings in. I don't know what it is about Brazilian singers, and why they are so able to capture that kind of emotional sound more than their American counterparts (e.g., Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, anyone named Gilberto); but she does it here. And the instrumentation of piano and percussion (which Ms. Souza plays, everything from marimba to conga to snare) is perfect. Not too much, but not little.
Actually, the piano parts by Edward Simon (inspired by Federico Mompou) sound almost classical; I detected a bit of Grieg in "Loneliness", Satie in "Poetry", and Brahms in "Memory". This album is not for jazz purists; but if you like beautiful music that grows on you with each listen, regardless of genre, then this album is for you.
Ms. Souza was voted the #1 "Rising Star" in the 2004 Down Beat poll. She merits that; but on this evidence, she won't be a "rising star" for very long. As I said, highly recommended. RC
Pablo Neruda en INGLES.......2004-07-14
If you speak Spanish, you will be dismayed to hear how bland and shapeless his poems sound in English. Speaking of bland, the singing and music here is dullsville. With so many great Brazilian singers, why not listen to some old Joao Gilberto, or Joao's daughter Bebel, or Marisa Monte or Caetano Veloso. If you want the poetry of Neruda, reading it is more satisfying. This is a terrible combination of music and poetry. (Later comment: I listened to this cd again and I probably had unfair expectations and was unduly harsh. It's a pretty recording and Souza can sing...it still all kind of sounds the same, but 3 stars instead of 1.)
Soulful, relaxing, clearly beautiful..........2004-06-03
It does seem that some people have a negative agenda because Souza chose to work with the poetry of Neruda. I own about 25 or so books of Neruda's poetry, so I don't have to say anything about what I think of his work, but it seems the "purist English geeks" have an issue with this production... My best guess -- from reading Neruda's memoirs and other stories about him -- is that Pablo would love it... as I do.
And if you've never heard Neruda's work, Luciana Souza's interpretations are heavenly. Well work every penny!
Great 'art song/jazz'.......2004-06-03
Absolutely stunning, wonderful album IMO. I'm not always crazy about LS, but this one is a perfect balance between her voice,
Edward Simon's incisive piano and the magical words by Neruda-- even in translation. Only comparison to Norah Jones I see is that
there's an emphasis on quiet-- but NERUDA is at a whole different, better level I think. One of the great 'art song jazz' albums-- and I also like the incorporation of a few Mompou
melodies-- just the right nostalgic, 'simplified' Chopin touch.
So far in '04, my favorite album of the year in any genre.

Queen Margot.......2007-04-15
On the surface, this may seem like a costume drama for late night viewing. BUT, it is historically dead on!!
Virna Lisi as Catherine de Medici and the musical soundtrack by Goran Bregovic are real bonuses. Any future edition of this fine production with English dubbing would be sad indeed.
Bregovic is no French, but he is not Croatian, either!.......2006-12-20
....and, at the end, who cares? Rednecks from former Yugoslavia beware....no one cares about dialetcs, traditional this or that, all people are interested in is - the fabulous music Bregovic wrote! In his music he has entwined the best of Bosnian, Serbian, Macedonian, Gypsy, Croatian, Montenegrian ..... music. What he has done with his well known "old" tracks in this movie was to accommodate them to the very strong nature of a historical theme in a 16th century set up, but many who know his music since his early years, will unmistakeably recognise the original melody base. Also, people interested in this kind of music - google please! You don't need to call everything you don't understand - French!
A welcome introduction to a different musical style.......2002-08-14
For anyone with an eclectic taste in music who needs a change from endless Mozart, Handel, Bach et al, this is a very welcome and refreshing recording. The beautiful introduction and closing
song by Ofra Haza is worth the price of the CD alone. Why "Elo Hi" did not hit the top of the pop charts the way "Pie Jesu" did must only be due to marketing.
I first heard this music when I caught the film "La Reine Margot" on TV. Although the film was excellent, it was just a little too gory, but oh, the music! It evoked childhood memories of visiting Russian churches and also recalled to mind the magnificent "Ivan the Terrible". This was the first time I had even heard of the composer Goran Bregovic, which is not surprising as music in the US is dominated by pop and country. Finding a station playing classical or other is very difficult and dependent on where one lives. The classical section of the music stores consists of Charlotte Church, Andea Bocelli and a few vintage recordings of works by 18th and 19th century composers.
I would recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys the singing of Ofra Haza, and who does not consider that classical music was only written in western Europe.
yugoslavian-french connection - via genius from Sarajevo.......2000-03-04
As this is a soundtrack to a movie one definetely needs to go to the nearest Blockbuster and see it first. And see it again, just to understand it. If ever there was a European movie (besides Betty Blue) this is it! And if ever there was a European soundtrack - this is it! Bregovic is a genius miner of musical heritage of the continent, or rather of his home country - former Yugoslavia. And what jewels he brought us! Some of the songs worked so well that I never realized that I was watching a French movie (the book was written by Alexander Dumas) with traditional Croatian music in the background. Or a synthesis of Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian tunes. David Bowie put it best:"The end of twentieth century is about juxtaposition of information." And look what comes out when You do it right. But, besides all this - this is just fantastic music from a great composer and skilled craftsman that was lucky to have happened to live in a great place at a great time.
Still OK!.......1999-07-03
Well, I love his music since I was a child. His Band "Bijelo Dugme" made for a very long time the best Yugoslawian music. And still he is the best . This Album, without watching a movie at the same time,is not soooo god, but it is still very possible to feel HIS sound. He is Goran Bregovic, and for us is this name a legend. The real name of Dalmatian song is actually "U Te San Se Zajubija". It is a dialect from Dalmatia!

An extraordinary homage to Neruda.......2005-04-11
For the benefit of customers who may not speak Spanish, I translate the review of Toño Romero H. The rating is his.
This is my best purchase for years!
A good exercise upon buying this disc is, before listening to the songs, to read the lyrics and try to imagine them as a song. That way one can better appreciate the extraordinary artists who participate in this selection of Neruda's poems set to music. In the majority of cases the songs seem to have been composed by them. I love the interpretations of Jorge Drexler (look for more music by him, he's a brilliant Uruguayan), Sabina, Julieta Venegas (can you imagine Neruda as reggae?), Ana Belén (what a voice!), Adriana Varela, Pedro Guerra and the rest...
Good job, Victor Manuel! A brilliant homage to a brilliant poet.
¡Buen trabajo Victor Manuel! Un homenaje genial a un poeta genial.

Well Played Naxos Collection.......2007-07-27
As a fan of Naxos I seek out their collections in their catalog and have rarely been disappointed. I am not a fan of trumpet , just a fan of classical music.Weber and Neruda were unknown to me and I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful variations of Weber and the earliest piece pre-clasical piece by Neruda which has one of the most beautiful slow sectiions I have ever heard,. The Hummel and Haydn which are usually considered core reperoire were enchantingly played by Eklund and the Swedish chamber orchestra.
Please buyy. Please excuse typos I have a neurologic disease.
Buy It.......2006-06-02
One of my favorite baroque recordings, if only because it was my introduction to Neruda. Eklund's performance is, as always, incredible. There many flattering adjectives that would properly describe this album, so buy it and pick the your favorite.
