Scott Weiland. Slash. Duff McKagen. Matt Sorum. It doesn't seem like a good idea to put these people in a room together, let alone a band. But it was the same exact explosive element of danger and low I.Q. scores that made both of these players' former groups--Stone Temple Pilots and Guns N' Roses--sell billions, so why stand in their way? The music on Contraband sounds appropriately monumental, all window-quivering riffs, and ticker-tape parade choruses. "Do It For the Kids" and "Set Me Free" take direct inspiration from Nirvana, meaning they are brilliantly raw, raucous, and indecent. It's great stuff. The power-ballads like "Fall to Pieces" and "You Got No Right," however, are more heartburn than heartbreak when compared to past achievements like, oh, let's say "Sweet Child O' Mine." --Aidin Vaziri

Come on...we BUY the CD and can't put it on our ipod!!
Sure install software to create security breaches in your system.
AND only 2 good songs...what a rip.
1 star for the music.
-1 star for greed. THIS IS A HUGE ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Super Group Super Great.......2007-07-05
It was predicted that this band would save rock n' roll, and for me that's what they did. The combination of ex-Gunners with former STP frontman Scott Weiland is fantastic to say the least. If you like Rock n' Roll pick this album up immediatly.
Great first effort from the supergroup, now polished this year with a new album.......2007-07-05
I come back to review this album in the wake of VR second album release "liberated". Contraband is the orginal first effort of this group, made up of ex-Guns and roses members Duff, Slash and Matt Sorum (second drummer for guns After Steve), Stone temple pilots frontman Scott Weiland, and Dave Kushner, former guitarist for Wasted youth. Originally known as "the Project" and filmed for a VH1 documentary while rehersing and serching for a frontman, Weiland fell into their laps and they hit it off right away. Set me free was their fisrt song and released on the Hulk soundtrack. Next release was SLither. These first two has the old STP sound to them, with a kick of GNR guitar from slash. Final big release off the album was Fall to pieces, A great ballad and very GNR sounding. Overall, a great mix of sound on the album from both groups. I agree that the mixing was a bit rough, but still good. With their second album out now, the band has really come into their own sound, and comparing it to this album, Contraband was definitly a start, and seems a mix of their root groups sounds, but awesome anyway. Hopefully these guys will keep going and not fall apart like audioslave recently did, another supergoup of this decade. Check this album out. Unfortunately, this edition was a copy protected album, so making taking it to I pod, mp3 is not really possible. Oh well, still worth it.
4- Content 1- Disc.......2007-07-03
Bought this years ago.. When i switched to strictly using my PC for music, i went to rip and cant... Read other reviewers about their issues as well. I dont own an I-Pod but cant use the disc for that either... So i guess i wont be hearing this again until i hook my stereo back up.. Absolutely insane and RCA should be ashamed... I am sure there will be many used editions because of this.
Musically its great. I do like the cd itself. Solid Rock record.
Almost Every Song Is A Hit !!!.......2007-06-28
I love Guns N Roses and when I heard that Slash and Duff were going to make a superband I was hyped about it. It took me a few weeks to pick this up after it came out but when I did I fell in love with it :) Some of the best songs on it are Slither (the single), Big Machine, Headspace, Superhuman, and basically all of the others except for 1.
I'm really looking forward to the sequel to this and it's coming out in less than 7 days - so it's already a must buy for me :)

One of Australia's best exports.......2007-07-11
This compilation is great. Men at Work made some great music and it's collected here. All of the songs are good. In addition to being good, with melodies that catch in the head, the songs make the listener think some too. There's intellectual and emotional impact to them. I liked these guys as a kid and I like this CD a lot now. Great buy, especially for 80s kids.
Great CD.......2007-03-12
Definitely worth having. Great music to move to while doing housework and had to stop a few times and dance around the house. My 9 yr old son thought I was nuts. Oh well....after the 80's....maybe I am.
Better than I remembered.......2007-02-04
I bought this after a friend and I were discussing old bands, films, etc. that we loved growing up. As I played the C.D., the songs were even better than I remembered! Besides bringing back memories, it brought back a unique sound and voice that is similar to absolutely no one. If you've never seen the videos that go with 'Be Good Johnny' or 'Land from Down Under', you'll have to try to get your hands on them. These guys were as good at performing for the screen as they were behind their instruments. 'Overkill' is my husband's theme song (he worries too much over little things). The lyrics have a wide variety of meanings with diverse beats. There's something for everyone on this 'best of' the best band ever!

Good collection, EXTREMELY poor sound.......2006-11-14
I'll have to concur with the reviewer "El Marco", who inexplicably is the only reviewer to have noted the poor sound on this CD.
While the collection of songs by a band I like is fine, the mastering of this disc is nothing short of a crime. After hearing "Be Good Johnny" on my iPod for the first time, the horrible distortion of the cymbal crashes mad me figure I'd ripped the CD at the wrong bitrate. Checking my iTunes settings, I saw that it was no different from any other CD I'd ripped, so I pulled the CD back out to see what was what. Listening to the disc directly, the same flaws I noticed on my iPod are there in the original recording (which I'd not listened to critically before I put it on my player). Every track (not just "Be Good Johnny") that I care about sounds bad, either because of distorted cymbal crashes, muddy overall sound, poor bass, or a maddening shifting of the stereo image left and right across the soundstage.
Listening to this CD through headphones, you will be driven to tears by the realization that someone mucked up the transfer BIG TIME. Basically, the CD sounds as though it was produced from a bunch of 96bps MP3 tracks stolen off of Kazaa and then burned to disc. I wish I were exaggerating, but truly, this is easily one of the ten worst-sounding commercially produced CD's in my 1000+ disc collection.
Four stars for the selection of music, minus-3 stars for the sound quality. The quality of this CD is inexcusable.
Heady Subject Matter Masqueraded As Satire...Or Not........2006-07-23
I've always admired Men At Work's brief yet substantive output. Though their reign on the charts lasted just a year or so, Their tunes had an infectiousness about them that endures the ages. Clever lyricism married to largely ebullient and catchy arrangements, Men At Work were for a time masters of the pop/rock game. And each tune covered a topic of note.
Take the winsome #1 hit "Down Under" (nationalism), filled with flutes and a bubbly tempo. The #1 "Who Can It Be Now" (paranoia/neurosis), with its sense of urgency conjoined to a ever repetitive chorus. The top 3 hit "Overkill" (obsessive compulsion/insomnia) with its eerie synths and heavy atmospherics. The top 10 hit "It's A Mistake" (Nuclear War/Cold War Histrionics) summarizing the folly of oversight and rash behaviors which threaten the world at large within the constraints of a pop song. And, the top 30 hit "The Story of Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde"(schizophrenia/delusions) which puts a light hearted spin on a more serious subject.
I realize that the thoughtful style of Men At Work is tongue in cheek (like much of my review descriptions here) and I wouldn't classify it as deep. But to me, their pop appeal is undeniable and they are worthy of their respective place in music history. There are other more obscure tunes on here - some you may have heard on MTV such as "Be Good Johnny" which are equally enticing to the listener. All in all, a good collection of a good band.

Contraband Rocks.......2007-03-23
The best of G'N'R and STP have one of the best debuts in Rock and Roll in a long, long time. Scott Weiland is in fine form, and Slash is the master shredder of hard rock, pealing off killer solo after killer solo, without the the fickle Axl to bring the proceedings to a crawl. Anxiously awaiting chapter 2.
Only True Rock Band Out There.......2005-07-26
This album is simply amazing; it sounds as real rock would sound in the Twentieth Century, and not like the trashy grunts put out by the likes of rocker wannabe bands such as Blink 182, or the sickening wails of Good Charlotte (most appropriately known as Good Grief). The best of the best is here. Get it one way or the other.
Great twenty-first century rock 'n' roll........2005-07-14
A really great CD. Velvet Revolver is an amazing hard-working, hard-rocking band. Rock 'n' roll has been suffering since Nirvana. Velvet Revolver has brought it back. Some other new rock 'n' roll bands you should check out are Silvertide and Jet. Sucker Train Blues and Dirty Little Thing are very similar. That isn't bad though. The more the better! Do It For The Kids is pretty good but not as good as we will hear from the boys. Big Machine and Illegal I Song are better but still not as good as some others that we'll hear such as Spectacle, which is a great romping rock 'n' roll song. Fall To Pieces is a ballad but great as they go. The one-two-three punch of Headspace, Superhuman, and Set Me Free. The latter is my favorite song off the album. Followed by Headspace, then Superhuman so you could imagine how much it means to me that theey are all in a row. You Got No Right is the second best ballad out of the three. Fall To Pieces being the first. Slither is a great rocker and I never tire of it. I already mentioned Dirty Little Thing, and I ain't got all day. Loving the Alien is the third ballad and it's pretty good.

One of the best modern rock albums out there.......2005-06-01
Contraband (2004.) Velvet Revolver's first album.
In recent years, Stone Temple Pilots disbanded and Guns 'N' Roses has been left in ruins. Fortunately, several of the musicians who had made these bands so great weren't about to stop rocking. In late spring of 2004, Velvet Revolver released their first album, Contraband. This new band featured former Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland, and former Guns 'N' Roses members Slash and Duff McKagan. The two bands that these musicians came from were wildly different, and at this point in time, modern rock and roll was at an all-time low. Does Velvet Revolver's debut prevail? Read on for my review.
When I first heard about this band, I had some serious doubts. Guns 'N' Roses and Stone Temple Pilots are two totally different bands, and I thought that combining members of the bands would be an instant recipe for failure. My doubts were only strengthed by the fact that rock and roll of the era in which this album was released was at an all-time low in terms of quality. My skepticism was shattered as soon as I sat down and actually listened to the album. THIS is the way early twenty-first century rock and roll should sound! Rather than combining the stylings of the bands that the members came from, this album sounds more like a continuation of early-era Stone Temple Pilots, and that's a very good thing. Admittingly, on a few tracks, Weiland's vocals take some serious getting used to, but once you adjust to them, you'll agree that they are excellent. And, as you probably would have suspected, Slash and Duff McKagan are no slouches when it comes to the instrumental duties in the band. Another great strength of this album is the song diversity. There are straight-up hard and heavy rockers, slower, grunge-based rockers, and even a few ballads. The ballads are surprisingly good tracks! From start to finish, Contraband doesn't have a dull moment. Whether it's the big radio hits like Slither, Fall To Pieces, or Dirty Little Thing, or one of the lesser-known cuts, it's all good. Why can't all early twenty-first century rock and roll sound this good?
When you buy this album, make sure that you are buying the uncensored explicit lyrics version and not the edited version (there IS an edited version out there, so beware.) Something else I noticed is that the album comes in a slipcase, and there are many different colored slipcases that the album comes in. Of course, this is strictly cosmetic, so whatever one you buy is a matter of personal preference. I strongly recommend buying the album at Best Buy above all other retailers, because the Best Buy version has an extra disc of bonus tracks. I won't get into the technical issues here; I think the other reviews/reviewers covered that pretty well.
Velvet Revolver's debut album is nothing short of excellent. There were a number of other rock bands from this era who all pretty much sucked, and Velvet Revolver's music blew theirs out of the water, hands down. If you're a fan of the Stone Temple Pilots, this is an album well worth adding to your collection.
It's Not DualDisc's Fault.......2005-05-15
Just a note to anyone who is afraid of buying a DualDisc because they won't be able to rip the songs... With Velvet Revolver's Contraband, it doesn't matter. I bought the album originally when it was released last year. The regular cd's have been encrypted as well. There are ways around it if you really feel the need to rip the songs from the disc, but it's not only the DualDisc format that prevents copying. Just a fair warning. I actually commend artists who are taking these steps to keep their material from being handed out for free online. As for the album, yeah, the DVD side is a bit disappointing, but that doesn't mean that it's not an amazing album. One of the best of 2004 by far. The enhanced sound on the DVD side is fantastic, but if you aren't into that, go with the regular cd version. (But it won't matter for rippers... the cd's actually have a warning label on the front telling the consumer that it cannot be copied... it's pretty easy to see.)

Why did this album fail?.......2007-07-09
I realise that just recently a new album has been done by the band to which they may have shown growth from the lame title of "supergroup" into a substance-orientated band considering the band members.
Which i believe was half the problem with this record.
There was so much expectation on my end. I guess I am at fault for this because I love Stone Temple Pilots and Guns n Roses pre-spaghetti incident (sympathy for the devil was an awesome tune though and looked it this with the sort of tenacious glee of getting my hands on what seemed to look like a perfect melting pot of similar styles.
I was so wrong.
This album, production aside, felt like it was done in a matter of just speeding the process along and getting something out. Scott Weiland's vocal style also at the time didnt really feel fitting with the theme of the band, which felt very much like a gnr band.
Such a waste of money, I dont know if I will bother buying into this new album. Maybe they've improved but that first impression was by far, the worst for me.
Welcome Back guys........2006-12-12
this is one groovin rockin rightous album from the better half of guns n' roses because these guys are getting the last laugh in on axl. they're touring and connecting with fans again and make new ones while axl sit in limboland with his posers and trying to create the magic that once was. i just the love the groove in this album scott's vocals are great and fit with bands playing. nice debut i just wish that izzy would have join the group that would've been awsome. all the tracks are electify to listen to, the boys still have it.
highly recommended recording.
Great CD, but..........2006-04-26
Note, above, that the format is "copy protected." This means that:
1) It won't play on some older CD Players
2) You can't transfer any of the cuts on this CD to an iPod (or any other MP3 player, for that matter) unless you defeat the copy protection.
3) This CD will install a virus-like program onto your computer the first time you play it. (It's this program that enforces the copy protection, and the CD won't play if the program is not installed.) You can defeat the copy protection by disabling "autorun" on your machine, or on some Windows systems, by holding down the Shift key when you load the CD (which temporarily turns of autorun). If you don't do that, then the copy-protection virus will be installed.
Some versions of the copy-protection system have introduced serious security vulnerabilities into Windows machines, so if you decide to play this CD on a computer, check with Sony to get any updates that include the security fix. You will have to check for updates periodically, even if you don't play the CD more than once, and install fixes for any new security vulnerabilities as they are discovered. Sony goes to great pains to hide this program from you (just like other viruses), so it's hard to remove it once it's installed, so again, don't play the disk on a computer unless you're committed to getting regular updates from Sony.
I'd skip the CD and buy the music from iTunes.
Stick with Guns N' Roses. Forget Velvet Revolver.......2006-01-14
Velvet Revolver is nothing more than an updated version of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver will never ever have the same success or impact as Guns N' Roses. Guns N' Roses are rock legends and had massive success with all their albums:
Use Your Illusion I & II
Appetite for Destruction
G N' R Lies
The Spaghetti Incident?
Guns N' Roses scored chart success with the #1 singles, Sweet Child O'Mine and November Rain and top ten singles with Patience, You Could Be Mine, Welcome to the Jungle- one of the greatest rock anthems of all-time and Don't Cry- a classic ballad and showcases Slash at his absolutely best.
Scott Weiland is great vocalist- but his project, Velvet Revolver can only dream about the same success as Guns N' Roses.
Stick with Guns N' Roses- the success speaks for itself.
Guns N' Roses is superior to Velvet Revolver.
Velvet Revolver is nothing more than a recycled version of Stone Temple Pilots and won't have the staying power as Guns N' Roses and they won't sell the same number of albums as Guns N' Roses.
Stick with G N' R!!
Skip this album and get the albums by Guns N' Roses!!
SCOTT WEILAND DOES IT AGAIN... (FINALLY!!).......2005-08-31
If this CD could have picked up where STP's "Core" did, it would have, appropriately. With Scott's vocals sounding almost as refreshing as they did in the early STP days, its hard not to like this album for his sheer abilities alone. it is also safe to say that this is quite possibly one of Scott's biggest accomplishments to date, as he sounds more radiant and comfortable in his own skin than ever before. More impressive however, is the blatant connection between Weiland and Slash as they prove louder than ever, that they can both move forward musically from their previous larger than-life bands, and do it exceptionally well, at that. the album as a whole seemed well thought-out and incredibly delivered. this is NOT the usual super-group.

Very Special Singer.......2007-06-14
That sucks that Amie died so young, before she had a chance to make more music. It's weird thinking that she wasn't even as old as I am but has been gone nearly 10 years.
Anyway, this album is really good. Amie's voice was great, with a nice Louisiana accent. Cool songs:
12 Steps Down - crunchy guitar. A guy moves into the singer's building and she is smitten by him.
Papermill Road - driving down this road is how to get to the make out spot
Other Woman - spirited uptempo number. Crunchy guitar. Singer informs other woman that she's got the man away from her, but she's going to come to regret having him, she'll have all the grief from his behavior now.
House of Fallen Angels - tells a good, moving story
Talented country singer who might have been a star.......2005-01-13
It appears that Amie (born December 4, 1976) had all the qualities required to make it big in country music. We will never know whether she would have done because she died soon after her twenty-first birthday while this album was nearing completion. Amie hoped that this, her second album, would be good enough to impress the major labels in Nashville sufficiently for her to secure a recording contract with one of them. That wouldn't have guaranteed success (as many others have found out) but it would have given her a chance.
On this album, Amie sings ten songs that showcase her ability to sing a variety of songs, both ballads and up-tempo. The style is contemporary country but should appeal to some traditional country fans too, as the instruments include steel guitar, twelve string, fiddle and harmonica. Despite Amie's Louisiana heritage, the album does not show any Cajun influences.
Jim Beauhall, the producer, co-wrote all the songs except Twelve steps down (a great song about a man who supposedly lives twelve steps down from Amie) and Paper mill road (a song about past memories). Amie co-wrote two of the songs, these being When you smile at me (a brilliant song that opens the album) and The other woman, a feisty song in which she makes her opinion very clear to the other woman, who now faces the same problem with the philandering man.
Amie was surely very pleased with the ten songs that she had recorded by December 21, 1997. On that ill-fated day, she was driving along a road, hit a patch of ice and skidded to her death. As a tribute to Amie, one more song was added to the album and became its title track. Among the five singers who sang on this track, four are otherwise unknown to me but I recognize Lisa Stewart, who recorded one major label album (which I've reviewed) before returning to the obscurity from whence she came. It is a very moving song and I'm sure that all who knew Amie appreciate it, though I can imagine that there will be others who find it all too much. All the songs are great but my favorites among the others are A single crimson rose, Anywhere with you and This dream.
Because Amie was unable to promote the album, even local radio stations in Louisiana showed only limited interest in it, which is unfortunate. This album is one of the best country albums that you are likely to find on a small independent label.
A very special CD.......2001-04-18
Listening to this CD is so bittersweet. Knowing that Amie never had a chance to see it released or have a hand in choosing exactly which songs would be on it makes you treasure what she left behind even more. I'm only hoping that the other songs that didn't get put on this CD will someday find their way on a third Amie Comeaux album. She deserves it and so do we for her voice is truly that of one very special angel. I also very highly recommend her first album Moving Out. Its become one of my favorite CD's. Rest in Peace Amie.
Touching...Sweet...Sensitive.......2001-01-29
I had never heard of Amie until my friend next door put this C.D. on, at which point I said,"Who is that? What a Beautiful Voice!" Even if you are not a big fan of Country music, you would love this. I love the song, "The Other Woman" and "When Spirts Walk." If you are still not sure, download some of the clips that are given, and trust me, you won't even have to think twice.
Wonderful, a shining star lost too soon.......2000-03-31
I have both of Amie's CD. The first is very good. A Very Special Angel is fantastic. It really showed how much Amie had grown as a singer. Her voice was much stronger. The songs are beautiful. "Anywhere With You" and "A Single Crimson Rose" give me goose bumps. I would recommend this CD to everyone.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good album.......2005-08-09
I'm a devoted fan of GNR, so when I saw that 3 members of the long broken up GNR started this new band, I have to admit that I was excited to see what they would come up with. I wasn't dissapointed with the same great guitar riffs from slash, bass lines from duff and beats from matt sorum. An overall good album, more like 3.5 stars, but gets a bit repetitive after you listen to it for a while. Its not what GNR was, and i don't know if it will be, but the future can tell. To fans of both Stone Temple Pilots and GNR, I can't promise you'll like it, but chances are that you will find something to your taste in this album. Scott's vocals are nice on this album. I like this album enough, and I would reccommend you listen to it. Cheers, Di

Classic Golden Earring.......2006-04-26
Contraband / Mad Love was the second GE album I heard. It is one of my three favorites along with Moontan and the 1977 Live album. The songs Bombay, Mad Love's Comin', Sueleen, Con Man, and Fightin' Windmills are 70s rock gems. The guitar work on this album sound great - especially the opening riffs to Bombay and Mad Love's Comin'. Fightin' Windmills get bonus points for referencing Don Quixote.
Other favorites: Moontan (U.S. version), Live, The Naked Truth, Seven Tears, Grab It for a Second.
Their worst album.......2004-05-06
I must apologize as I realize that this is a much-loved album. But my question is: why? Don't get me wrong-I'm a big Golden Earring fan. But Contraband is, in my opinion, a junker. It only contains 7 songs, and I can honestly say that I don't enjoy a single one. Time's Up is garbage. Fighting Windmills is dull and pointless. Con Man is as weak as a water popsicle, and Mad Love's Coming is extremely overrated. The best song on the album might be Bombay-and that's saying alot, as Bombay is as mediocre as mediocre comes.
I hate to do this to my favorite band, but Contrand is a real dud. Don't waste your money unless you thouroghly enjoy the "Grab It For A Second" and "Switch" albums. In my opinion, the mid-late 70's was GE's big down period. Their 1980 and newer albums I find much more appealing, as I do Barry Hay and George Kooymans' 1987 solo albums, "Solo" and "Victory Of Bad Taste", both of which are rarer than an F5 tornado in LA. You'll have to keep an eye on ebay for those two. If you want QUALITY GE, go for "Bloody Buccaneers", "Millbrook USA", "Cut", "Prisoner Of The Night" "The Last Blast Of The Century" "Moontan" "The Hole" "Keeper Of The Flame" "Seven Tears" "Face It" and "Something Heavy Going Down". I myself am partial to these over "Contraband" "Grab It For A Second" and "Switch".
this flows smoothly...like B.O.C's "agents of fortune".......2003-06-08
i like the different textures this album offers, from "bombay" to "mad love" to "time's up" and everything inbetween is excellent.not a recommended first purchase for the neophyte, but of course essential for the diehard!.i like to pair this album with blue oyster cult's "agents of fortune" for some odd reason.another textbook reason on how G.E. knows how to floats outside the realms of hard rock into interesting territory i never get tired of!!!,yet it still can rock pretty well.
Half and Half.......2002-09-15
Like the other 70s GE albums, this one is half really good and half really average. Btw, this album was originally released in the US as "Mad Love" and had a different track order and a few different tracks. Still I think it is worth it for the good tracks.
Easy does it,easy does it........2002-05-03
After trying to make everybody happy, but themselves(maybe),
GE hires a slide guitar player, and lets loose. The result is
a relaxed sounding, easy flowing ,totally GE sounding cd.
Bombay bounces,Sueleen swings and Mad Loves keeps coming at
ya.The other 4 tracks are solid GE too.If you like GE this is a solid addition to your collection, and if you are real fan you probably already have this. But me being the only one to review,
some of you out there are losing out.
