    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Solid Album!!.......2004-11-04

Fans of early Heep probably will not care for this album much. It is slicker and more commercial than their 70s albums. But I think it rocks all the way through. With Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake coming over from Ozzy, Pete Goalby (great vocals) coming from Trapeze, and keyboardist John Sinclair coming from the Heavy Metal Kids, guitarist Mick Box had put together a great lineup. Who cares if some of the songs were covers (namely On The Rebound by Russ Ballard), this album sounds fresh and full of energy. It's hard for me to choose my favs because I like them all. Get it and give it at least a few listens all the way through.

3 out of 5 stars Has a few good songs, but..........2004-01-27

On The Rebound is a great song (although not written by the band). Chasing Shadows is kind of cool, but it is also sort of chick-ish/pop-ish. Too Scared to Run is heavy and fast. That's The Way That It Is is actually a decent pop song. A video of the song even appeared on MTV in the early days. The rest of the album is really bland and forgettable.

4 out of 5 stars Holy Rockin Heepman !.......2003-06-25

Just when the critics thought Heep was gone ( the album "Conquest" was proof ), BAM they're back ! A new Heep came through in the early 80's with this album . They took a modern sound and combined it with the classic Heep sound ! Songs like "That's The Way That It Is " and " Chasing Shadows" propelled the new Heep back into radio and ( believe it or not ) MTV ! Buy it , enjoy it and crank it up !

3 out of 5 stars Pride return to form.......2002-12-27

When everybody (Mick Box included) was thinking that Uriah Heep was gone for sure, the band obtined a new fresh of life recruting Bob Daisley, Lee Kerslake, John Sinclair and the very good singer Peter Goalby.

The result was ABOMINOG, a solid hard rock album, with polished production a little bit orientated for mainstream. Maybe because this line up was brand new and still a little bit unsure where to go, 5 of the ten songs on the original album are covers, but very well chosen covers!

I really enjoy this album, and it's not dated. best song for nme: "Running All Night With The Lion".

    5 out of 5 stars MOTTANOG.......2002-01-12

In April of 1981, after 12 years of ups & downs, Uriah Heep collapsed in a heap of broken dreams. Ken Hensley who had held the keyboards position, and had been main songwriter had left the band, after more rangour in the ranks, and his replacement Gregg Dechart had definitely not worked out. The last two albums, Fallen Angel (78) & Conquest (79), had been Heep's weakest, the final tour being very difficult for the band (support band "Rage" had blown them off the stage every night) and quite frankly, agony for the paying public. On the last night of the tour drummer Chris Slade left to join Gary Numan and, after realizing he had set his sites a little low, later joined "The Firm" with Paul Rodgers & Jimmy Page before taking over the drum seat with "AC / DC". Bassist Trevor Bolder joined Wishbone Ash, talented vocalist John Sloman was let go after trying to take over the show, leading the band in a very unheep like direction, leaving. The only remaining founding member Mick Box, with the name, but no band.
After a couple of months of staring at the inside of the bottom of a bottle of vodka, band agent Neil Warnock coaxed Mick out to give it one more go. Mick's first telephone call went to long time cohort drummer Lee Kerslake (who'd only originally left the Heep over a falling out with Ken Hensley) having just been fired by "Ozzy Osborne", Lee was glad of his old job back and became Heep's 5th & 7th drummer, although to be fair he has been with the band 28 years in total now. Also just sacked from Ozzy's band was the great "Bob Daisley" on bass, (Heep's 6th Bassist), so he was dragged along by Lee Kerslake adding his considerable songwriting skills to the party. Mick Box had always admired the skills of keyboard player John Sinclair from the disbanded "Heavy Metal Kids", so he became Heeps 3rd keyboard player. The final part of the jigsaw was put together when vocalist Peter Goalby (Heep's 4th) was lured away from "Trapeze".
The new band then retired to the studio with producer Ashley Howe to emerge 2 months later with ABOMINOG, a classic in hard hitting melodic rock.
From the moment Mick Box's guitar riff hits you on opener "Too Scared To Run" you know you are in for a sumptious ride. Goalby's vocals are perfect for the Heep sound, Sinclair's keyboards fill up all the gaps and include some truly exciting solos, Bob Daisley's songwriting skills have never been better shown off, Mick Box stomps his authority all over the guitar parts, wah - wah there, slide here, & as many twenty note a second solo's as any heart could desire. It's perhaps Lee Kerslake who's the real star here though, as his drums drive Heep on to glory.
Incredibly the album was a great critical & commercial success, including hit singles, two of the covers "That's The Way It Is" by Paul Bliss, & the stomping "On The Rebound" by Russ Ballard.
Abominog was the spur that put Uriah Heep back on the tracks, and they are still going today, although only Kerslake & Box remain from this line up, long may Mick Box lead his warriors into action.
For those of you wondering what an Abominog is, it's an Abominog of course.
    Mott the Dog.

3 out of 5 stars Uriah Heep - 'Abominog' (Essential).......2006-01-05

Originally released in 1982,not bad for a reunion lp when most long time Uriah Heep fans had assumed they were washed up.Now that keyboardist John Sinclair and vocalist Peter Goalby were new members in the Heep rank, they seem to breathe new life into the band.Of course, guitarist Mick Box always does his chore well on ALL Heep releases.Tunes I liked more than I thought I would were "Too Scared To Run","Running All Night",their Small Faces cover "Tin Soldiers" and the lp's single "That's The Way It Is".A decent album rock title,do check it out for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album !.......2005-12-09

I never liked Uriah Heep until I heard this album. I always prefered more metal but after listening to this album I was hooked on it.

All the songs are good and I love the way it sounds ! I really like On the rebound and That's the way that is.

A must have for any collection and in my opinion the only Uriah Heep to have !

1 out of 5 stars Where is the CD?.......2004-11-13

On October 14, 2004 I ordered the CD. As of November 15, 2004 I still have not received the CD. I contacted the seller (foxtrotmusic@sbcglobal.net) twice by email. No one responded to the emails. I would sure like to think there is a simple explanation. However, I don't recommend any purchases from foxtrotmusic.

5 out of 5 stars Power hard rock at its best! Very overlooked!.......2004-05-23

This was a great hard rock release, period! Great, memorable, well structured songs, and heartfelt, energized vocals all the way. 'Thats the way that it is' is worth the purchase of this CD alone. What a great, driving rock song that builds up tension, with a great release guitar solo!!! Uriah Heep rocks.

        5 out of 5 stars Classic??? Yes.......2001-11-27

Lots of cover songs. Lack of Originality. More hard rock them classic Rock? So what! this album rocks. The mix of the group members Daisley-Kerslake back end. Box's guitar with Sinclair on Heavy Keys. And Peter Goalby's vocals fit perfectly into the mix. What Box did on this release was pull the band out of the 70's/doldrums. MTV Played a cover song from this LP in medium rotation good for HEEP at the time. No Byron, or Wetton? Thats not great but Hell Sinclair and Goalby easily made up for that with their own talent. Out of the 200+ hard rock/metal albums I bought in the early 80's Abominog rocked the hardest with the best mix of Hard rock/Keys/vocals. I wore the disk out.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but very dated.......2004-11-06

With the complete implosion of Uriah Heep's lineup during 1980-81, leaving guitarist Mick Box as the sole remaining member, it looked like the end of the line for the band. Mr. Box, however, showed the stuff that he's made of, and determined to soldier on. Drummer Lee Kerslake was persuaded to rejoin the band in the absence of his long-time nemesis (organist Ken Hensley), bringing along bassist Bob Daisley, whom he had worked with in the Blizzard of Ozz. Keyboardist John Sinclair, who had toured with Heep as part of opening act Heavy Metal Kids would take Hensley's place, and as original Heep vocalist David Byron had previously turned down Mick's offer to rejoin the band, the call went out to Trapeze vocalist Pete Goalby (probably much to Ken Hensley's chagrin, as he has long maintained that he had preferred Goalby over John Sloman as a replacement for John Lawton, and eventually quit the band over his dissatisfaction with Sloman's vocals).

With the lineup now in place, Heep recorded Abominog, which, while it has some good material ("That's The Way That It Is", "Sell Your Soul", "Too Scared To Run", "On The Rebound"), doesn't generally live up to the quality of songs that Heepsters had gotten used to expecting since 1970, and the production hasn't dated well at all: Heep albums like Demons and Wizards, Sweet Freedom, Firefly, Sea Of Light, or Sonic Origami sound timeless; Abominog screams "this was recorded in 1982". It's certainly a decent effort, and worth a listen, and as a commercially successful "comeback" album, it's one of their most important, but it's certainly not in the realm of "Classic Heep".

1 out of 5 stars Disney Lullaby times Two.......2002-05-10

...IT ROCKS... Classic Heep at their best...

          4 out of 5 stars Not classic Heep,but classic 80's rock........2001-02-18

Uriah Heep was reborn (or was it re-reborn?) as an 80's heavy rock band with the release of Abominog. While this album,er.. CD, bears little similarity to Heep's David Byron-era works, the best tracks on Abominog are some of Uriah Heep's best rock. That's The Way That It Is (remember the bad MTV video?),On The Rebound,Too Scared To Run,etc. are great. The worst tracks on Abominog aren't bad, just basic formula 80's rock. If you've come this far in checking out this CD, my advise is buy it. Abominog should be in every Heepster's collection.

5 out of 5 stars 180 degree change in direction... and we get a MILESTONE!.......2000-09-05

OK, this album will certainly disappoint core Heep fans from the Magicians and Demons-era. Enter the new decade and we find a completely different Uriah Heep at the works, and guess what? they are quite brilliant! Sorry, but Ken Hensley's departure was good for the band. Abominog is definitively more mainstream oriented but the songs are very good. Enter Pete Goalby, and Uriah Heep gets a superb vocalist, sounding a bit like Foreigner's Lou Graham, only better. Hensley's replacement, John Sinclair (ex-Heavy Metal Kids and Gary Farr's Lion) came up with some of the best keyboard intros, sounds and arrangements ever. The freshness of the new line-up works fantastic together with the old nucleus of Mick Box (g) and the "Bear" Kerslake (d). Abominog is a great commercial-rock album from the early '80s. And don't forget that the rhythm section here consists of Lee Kerslake and bassist Bob Daisley (relatively fresh from Rainbow and Widow Maker), the same rythm partners in Ozzy Osbourne's two greatest albums (Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman), which were recorded within a year-and-a-half of Abominog. If you like QUALITY ROCK, buy it!

Same comments apply on Heep's outstanding follow-up: HEAD FIRST... an excellent album.

3 out of 5 stars Very good transitional album.......2000-09-03

"Abominog" is far from one of the best Uriah Heep cd's, but's thats not to say that it's bad; it is actually very good and is not the weakest Heep album, "Fallen Angel" has that dubious honor. It just lacks in the progressive elements somewhat, it is really one of the best albums released in the final days of hard rock's chart reign. It is comparable to what Black Sabbath and Grand Funk Railroad released in the early '80's. Do not expect the nonstop brilliance that you find in "Salisbury", "Conquest" and the definitive live cd "Spellbinder", and you'll like this a lot.
