This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

I received this CD as a gift from an audiophile friend. It hasn't left my CD player since (which, quite honestly, is totally out of character for me). Great writing, wonderful harmonies, terrific hooks -- a masterful blend of simple and complex that just gets better with every listen.

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this,then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

To celebrate its sixth anniversary as an ensemble, Kremerata Baltica presents a light, loving, and musically interesting confection. After an opening polka by Schnittke (who knew he could be so frothy?), we get 11 variations on the song "Happy Birthday" by Peter Heidrich, à la Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, and some dance movements. Delightful. Elsewhere, Franz Waxman's Variations on "Auld lang syne" are as clever as they are unexpected and charming. More variations--this time on "God save the King" by the 19th century composers Ghys and Servais--afford Kremer and cellist Marta Sudraba a fine time, and Teddy Bor's brief riff on Mozart's omnipresent "Eine kleine nachtmusik" is a hoot. I was desperately looking through the internet for a tango "happy birthday" and the tune was there, in this album. After I purchased the cd, I read the booklet included and there I found mentioned that "the album's title is not merely a reference to the popular tune, but a celebration of the ensemble's anniversary". So, I was happy to have finally found a tango "happy birthday" but I was also disappointed because this was not the playful album I was looking forward to listen to.
But this is a bit unfair for this excellent orchestra.
If what you are looking for is innovations on the romantic classicals... well this could be it. The point is that this is an album for listeners who know their way into classical music.
Other than that I should suggest that innovation regarding any classical music "playful" album would be to capture the listener's interest with more daring ways than that.

I bought it out of my own devotion to Gidon Kremer and another one for a food friend's birthday. Kremer never let me down. This is another outstanding CD and a perfect birthday gift, even for non-classical lovers. However, to be very honest, I am not totally satisfied with all the tracks but still it's highly recommended. I would say it is an almost-must-have for your CD shelf. The variation of the traditional 'Happy Birthday' is fantastic if not too commercial.

If you enjoy parodies, this will be the perfect album for you. The jokes played on the various composers are amusing and refreshing, especially for music students who bore their brains out analysing these composers. Take a fresh view and enjoy! Even though they may seem meaningless initially, they grow onto you soon enough; and you will start asking - why not?

For years I listened to the theme music on Inspector Morse and wondered what it was. Now that Amazon makes it easy to track such things down, I know. These three albums (volumes 1, 2, and 3) combine Barrington Pheloung's wonderful theme and background music with Morse's favorites (be warned, we get into some opera here). The three volumes provide an excellent evening of classical music.

While niether David Grisman nor Old & In The Way, this CD should delight those who appreciate Dead tunes presented in less than familiar ways. Truckin' can't be remastered in a quasi-bluegrass steel pedal version to the satisfaction of any true deadhead, yet this version reminds us that their music is timeless and transcends definition. The little blast of "I Know You Rider", among many others during Bird Song reminisceses of the anticipation at a show, wondering where it was leading. Dark Star done in this particular environment begs the intensity, yet conveys a similar sense of wonder. Overall, the mandolin soloing in this compilation is very interesting and will motivate those basement pickers to relisten to the original show tapes to find their place in an historic place in the evolution of roots americana.

As both a GD fan and a blue grass one, I was expecting so much more from this CD. It really should have been a no-brainer: take some of the more folkish GD songs (God knows there are plenty), get some top blue grass performers and let them have fun with them. Instead, what you get is a series of songs delivered in a sterile, flat, overly scripted manner with no spontaneity and no improvisation.

There is only one song on the CD that really catches the spirit of blue grass and shows what this CD could have been, and that is Going Down the Road Feeling Bad. Interestingly, this is not even a GD original, but an old folk song covered by many blue grass artists (ex. Flatt and Scruggs' 'Lonesome Road Blues'). In short, the performers go wild with it, give it the full blue grass treatment, and deliver a very, very interesting version. Why they could not do the same with all of the other songs is a mystery.

This could hardly qualify as a tribute album.

I tend to agree with the one star review below, but not to that extreme. Much of the Dead canon would make fantastic bluegrass music, and it's great that someone is trying. These renditions are clean, crisp cuts of tight bluegrass that don't quite achieve the bounce and spontanaiety of the originals. That's understandable...bluegrass tends to be very tight, rehearsed, and laid out ahead of time. Everyone takes a little lead, and the song's over. But the big drawback is the lack of vocals. Much of what is irreplaceable and addictive about the Dead's music is the lyrics, not just the melody. Friend of the Devil is a great tune, as is Scarlet Begonias, but how much flatter and less interesting they are without the wonderful words behind them! I haven't gotten vol. 2 yet, but I sure hope they have a singer this time. Reccomended, with this caveat in mind.

What a great idea! What a flat, boring, soulless execution! It sounds like a bunch of couldn't-care-less paid by the hour studio guys who might have just finished laying down a track for a McDonalds commercial stepped into a studio, were given the charts, played what was written, and packed up and went home. Big disappointment. Now I see they have a part II of this - unbelievable. None of the energy and joy that infuses bluegrass, nor any of the magic and beauty the is the Grateful Dead, made it on to this sorry rip-off. Save your money.

I listened to this CD a few times, and I tried my hardest to like it, but the more I listen, the more flat and unimaginative it sounds. It's too bad, because I love bluegrass and the Grateful Dead.

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

This is one soundtrack that packs a punch.Unlike today's music, this soundtrack really rocks! Proving once again that the 80's had the best music.This is a great metal/hair/rock album.
1.Shocker(10/10)The title track kicks major ass.Paul Stanly(of kiss)on vocals, Vivian Campbell(of Dio and Whitesnake)on guitar, Rudy Sarzo(of M.A.R.S. and Whitesnake)on Bass, and Tommy Lee(Motley Crue)on drums.This song will blow you away.
2.Love Transfusion(10/10)Another great metal song.Iggy Pop on vocals, Guy Mann Dude and John McCurry on guitars among many others involved.
3.No More Mr Nice Guy(1/10)Megadeath sucks on this one.Megadeath ruined this song.Horrible job.Their a good band on their own, but they're suckin all over the place on this one.Shame on you Megadeath!
4.Sword and Stone(9/10)great song performed by Bonfire.Excellent job.This one was written by Bruce Kulick(of Kiss).
5.Timeless Love(9/10)A great love ballad.If you want a ballad dine right 80's style this is a good one!Performed by Saraya.They do a fine job.Their first self titled release is worth buying.This song is just a sample of what the can do.
6.Shockdance(4/10)Pretty bad song, but it is so bad it's actually funny to listen to because of the rap(Pinker he's a stinker)Ha Ha Ha!Alice Cooper does the vocal work!
7.Demon Bell(10/10)This is the best song Dangerous Toys ever performed.A killer tune.Love the Guitar riffs!
8.The Awakening(6/10)Not a bad song.Pretty decent metal tune performed by Voodoo X.
9.Different Breed(3/10)Pretty horrible song by this loser band called Dead On.More like Dead End which is what they came to!
10.Shocker(reprise)7/10)Continuation of te chorus line at the end of the first song.

One of the greatest 80's metal soundtracks ever! The main theme "shocker" is absolutely rockin'!!! Also the old song "no more mr. nice guy" sang by Megadeth is much better than the original version... Too bad they haven't brought this album out again... It's a must for every metal fan!

I got this when it first came out. The highlight for me on this
is the song, The Awakening by a band called Voodoo X. Very, Very Cool Tune. Another stand out is Sword and Stone by Bonfire, Demon Bell by Dangerous Toys. The title track has some various artist on it. Definately a good cd if you like the 80's metal scene, as i do. But definately check out The Awakening by Voodoo X.
