It's funny how this hardcore punk band spent years writing songs from a personal and positive stance only to be remembered for a goofy cover tune. For instance, 7 Seconds' "99 Red Balloons" (which was borrowed from Nena, a one-hit wonder in the U.S.) became a punk pop classic after it was culled from this 1985 album. That's not to say the other tracks here don't have their charm. The title track offers a catchy sing-along. The propulsive "Strength" makes its mark, ending with a pile of strange vocal effects. This rather brief album benefits from clean and powerful production by Ian MacKaye, an obvious early inspiration to 7 Seconds as a member of the pre-Fugazi band Minor Threat. --Larry Crane

5 out of 5 stars The Real HxC.......2006-08-25

I have been into these guys for a while now! I am 21 and my Uncle used to see these guys all the time back in the 80's! I saw them last year at a show in Detroit Michigan! It was amazing! Get this album! They are fast and to the point! This album has a lot of good suff on it for sure! Also check out one of their other albums called The Crew!

4 out of 5 stars a great record to have in your collection.......2003-05-18

well, i pulled this record out of the rubble a few weeks ago. i'm so amazed as to how good it is. how it still sounds awesome after all these years. this record is easily liked by many people; straight-edge, hardcore, punk, old-school/new-school. "trust" and the title track are among the best 7 seconds songs ever made. great album to show to your lil bro or sis. there's some songs towards the end of this record that are just ok, and not great. but, still an A record.

This CD will make you jump, make you mosh, make your nose bleed your t-shirt and you'll be just really ....ing happy about it. Beautifully violent, this 7 second's CD is pure musical angst which forces itself through your ears as barbed wire. For those who have heard this CD before, they will agree with me on that. For those who haven't heard this yet, welcome, you have come to the place: let this CD be your strenght, be your truth for years to come. Check this out. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Their best..........2001-01-12

For years Kevin Seconds had been imitating Ian Mackaye's old band Minor Threat. So happened when Ian produced 7 Seconds in the same studio where Minor Threat recorded? They made the best 7 Seconds album ever recorded, and one of the defining moments in h/c and punk. Funny thing is, this album doesn't sound much like Minor Threat. It's melodic and upbeat, and way too positive for MT. It's even got the Misfits-like singalongs but without the cheesy goth lyrics.

The album is brilliant from start to finish. The production is crisp and live sounding. Ian even sings along in the choruses. 99 Red Balloons is great but the originals are better--In Your Face, Strength, Remains to be Seen, and the extra tracks too--Regress No Way and the remake of their old classic, We're Gonna Fight. The extra live stuff is the much better than the live tracks provided on The Crew.

Hardcore is easy to play but difficult to pulloff without being cheesy or severely mediocre. 7 Seconds for a brief time were one of the best punk bands around--their music was honest and heartfelt. After this album 7 Seconds changed their sound, completely abandoning hardcore for the next decade.

If you've never heard them and you're curious, this is the place to start. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Historically important choral music, wonderfully performed!.......2004-05-25

For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.

WHAT A MIGHTY GOD presents 20th Century choral arrangements of music from the African American spiritual tradition rooted in spirituals and gospels, including Harry T. Burleigh's "My Lord, What a Mornin'" (1929), "Walk Together Children" (William Henry Smith, 1937) and more contemporary composers like Sanford Moore's "Go Tell It On The Mountain" (1993.)

There are excellent notes about the genre, however, in light of the historical significance of this music I'm surprised and disappointed to find no biographical information about the composers, not even birth and/or death dates, with this CD. I feel this is a crucial component in an "outreach" project like this, especially since most of these composers are not well known. Still I highly recommend it for the music alone.

The other three CDs are available as single titles, or in the boxed set THE WITNESS COLLECTION which includes:

WHAT A MIGHTY GOD: Spirituals and Gospels for Chorus
DANCE LIKE THE WIND: Music of Today's Black Composers
GOT THE SAINT LOUIS BLUES: Classical Music in the Jazz Age
SKYWARD MY PEOPLE ROSE: Music of William Grant Still
