Never underestimate the regenerative powers of Metallica. Following the stripped-down Load and Re-Load, they've returned to the raw, vitriolic savagery of their earlier canon, using 1984's Ride the Lightning as a template for St. Anger. The title track provides the psychic lynchpin of the album by combining the bombast and defiance of the band's earliest high-water marks with more deliberate lyrics and emotional nakedness. Equally cathartic is "Some Kind of Monster," a lumbering beast of a song that declares, "This is the voice of silence no more." Despite that claim, there's an economy to these lyrics; James Hetfield's raw-toothed growl only occasionally punctuates the menacing soundscapes. In fact, "Dirty Windows," the standout track here, is a shimmering five-minute instrumental that's free of the baroque trappings that sometimes clutter the Metallica landscape. --Jaan Uhelszki

3 out of 5 stars Metallica's Turning Point II ?.......2007-07-31

I am a Metallica fan of the first four albums. "Black" was OK - obviously their turning point to make more commercial music. "Load" and "Reaload" were awful. Now - they made an album that isn't so commercial. They had to do it! Only that's how they can survive. The result isn't as good as I expected. Although it doesn't seem to be reproduced at all - it doesn't matter me. I really hate the songs that are so long. "Frantic", "All Within My Hands", "St. Anger", and "The Unnamed Feeling" are great songs...but for example "Some Kind of Monster" is really boring. It's almost 10 minutes! This whole album is almost 80 minutes long - and there's only 11 songs! What they were thinking? In addition - this theme is quite boring - why to make a whole album about anger? Where's the old classic songs like "Fade to Black" and "Leper Messiah"? Those songs weren't so angry but they had the real feeling! This could have been a great album if they only would have undestood to make 8 or 9 songs and keep them short. Despite that - this album can be a real therapy album - you don't wanna be angry after listening to this album. I hope that this album, however, will be a turning point to make heavy metal again.

3 out of 5 stars Here we go again..........2007-07-28

In 1990, ...And Justice For All hit the streets. It did not take long for many Metallica 'fans' to start in with the complaints. The drums were overproduced, the songs too long. A few even griped Metallica had simply rehashed Puppets due to the proverbial writer's block.

Well, Metallica listened. The release of the Black album seemed to serve up exactly what Metallica 'fans' were asking for. Gone were the bloated odes to Euro-metal that crammed Lars' record collection. An emphasis on slick production and catchy, even melodic riffs took hold. And Metallica 'fans' were at it once again. More criticism!!! This time they were selling out, turning their back on true metalheads around the world and nailing the coffin into thrash metal for good.

This time Metallica decided they had enough, releasing two fantastic heavy rock, blues and country infused beasts, Load and Reload. Yep, you guessed it, more complaining. And God forbid, they cut their hair!!!

So when Metallica released St. Anger four years ago swearing it was a return to their metal roots, the scene was abuzz. Upon its release, one thing became obvious. Metallica 'fans' are more fickle than a teenage girl. I am convinced some of the reviewers included here did not even listen to this disc. Maybe they were too busy matching their shoes with their shirt.

To say this collection has no redeeming qualities and worthy of 1 star is ridiculous. The fact is this is their meanest, hardest, fastest record since MOP. Although the opening track is a little rough, St. Anger, Dirty Window, Invisible Kid, My World and Sweet Amber are energetic and passionate. At times lightning fast, fat guitar sound and memorable riffs are loaded in these five songs. The Unnamed Feeling is a plodding beast that will smack you between the eyes.

This does not mean this disc is without flaws. Some Kind of Monster is a decent song for 4 minutes. The problem is it drags on for 8. Shoot Me Again and All Within My Hands should never have made it to the light of day and Purify is decent, but far from memorable. Moreover, the production will not go down among Bob Rock's finest efforts and Lars clearly out thunk himself with the drum sound. The lack of guitar solos was a complaint among some of the other reviews. Personally, I have never been a big Kirk solo fan so I don't miss it. But certainly as cliche metal goes, no solos means trouble.

Is this one of Metallica's finest works? No. But there are some damn good songs, some great riffs and enough entertainment to make it a worthy buy. The edition with the DVD adds a little extra flavor as well.

Who knows what Metallica does next. One thing for sure, whatever it is, they will still be the band 'fans' love to hate.

1 out of 5 stars selloutallica.......2007-07-18

i really dont need to write a review here as i see 4000 other people have done so but i couldnt help it...THIS SH I T FU C KING SUCKS!!!!!!! avoid this garbage like the plague. there is not a single guitar solo on the whole album and lars' drums sound like tin cans. hetfields voice is trash. music and production = crap. they sold over 2 millions copies though so im sure they are cashing in on this. they are coming out with another album in early '08 so we will see if they redeem themselves.

1 out of 5 stars HUGE let down ! sux!.......2007-07-17

I hope they do better with there next cd that comes out! there was only 1 good song ! ST anger and that was it!

1 out of 5 stars Lame.......2007-07-15

Crappy sound, lacks originality, not worth 4$ in the bargain bin. Those who give this 4 stars or more are, quite frankly, those Metallica fans who like anything the band produces, regardless.

1 out of 5 stars NOT WORTH THE MONEY.......2004-06-09

First of all I don't really like the St. anger song. But the ramones covers are quite cool, especially Commando, today your love, tommorrow the world and now I wanna sniff some glue.
So my recommendation to you is: Go buy single that includes these three songs, instead of this of this copy. You can get that for maybe $4 instead of this $25-version... DO NOT BUY THIS ONE

4 out of 5 stars Semi Tribute Ep.......2003-09-09

The songs played here were originally recorded by The Ramones. So this is kinda tribute to them. This cannot be St Anger stuff. Its part of 5 songs they recorded for the "We're A Happy Family" tribute. They only get 53rd and 3rd.

1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2003-08-23

Unlike many, I loved St. Anger and bought this for the B-sides. Unfortunately, all songs are brief (around 2min), do not reflect the style of the SA, nor have any of the power. Too bad.

i once owned albums and listened to music by metallica during the cliff years. but when i sampled their latest album, i immediately tossed this album in the fire place and said it was the worst piece of garbage that has ever been made for hearing consumption. is metallica to good for some thrash music? i can see why jason left this band. save your money!! i wish i had the option of selecting negative stars

5 out of 5 stars Great Single.......2005-10-12

Metallica really gave us something cool with this single. They included the tracks that they recorded as a tribute the The Ramones. It's great seeing Metallica play old punk rock because they can actually do it and it proves they can play more than metal. Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue is my favorite on the cd and it's one of my favorite Ramones songs. If you're into owning rare Metallica songs this should be added to your collectio you won't regret it.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad.......2006-06-16

I went to the store and picked up St. Anger. I have to admit, it is not as good as their past music, but they have come a long way since cliff died.

However, this CD has its ups and downs.

Frantic- I love this song, when James sings frantic tic toc, for some reason, i want to speed on the highway. Kinda reminds me of the song Fuel.

St. Anger- A great song as well, with a catchy opening riff. The music video is pretty good too, played at San Quentin

Some Kind of Monster- This song is weaker than the others. its more relaxed, somber beat, that gets very old. I skip over this one when its in the CD player

Dirty Window- this song highlights Lars "trashcan" drums. Lyric wise, is very trim, with a constant theme of a courtroom.

Invisible Kid- Very Catchy Opening riff. It is a great song up till the end. The vocal at the end are very hard on my ears, so i just skip it then

My World- Mediocre Track, I dont listen to it as often as the other tracks.

Shoot Me Again- I love this song, its melody is very upbeat, and has some nice drumming in the intro.

Sweet Amber- This song is about when Metallica refused to do a radio ad campaign, and got the shaft because of it. "Wash your Back so you wont Stab mine" other than that, its an okay song, and i dont really listen to it often.

The UnNamed Feeling- The best song on the album. Period. An excellent opening riff, and lyrics that chill a person to the bone. Makes me cheer up when i have a crappy day.

Purify- a mediocore song, that i just skip by

All Within My Hands- this song would have been the best, if James did not have the "kill kill kill kill kill" part at the end. its kind of lame, but other than that, the song is a beuaty

1 out of 5 stars mr slippy fist.......2006-03-29

'Cause what a brighter idea than to release an album that no-one would bother downloading, let alone BUYING!! I won't go into further details, Metallica was done, well over a decade ago and this embarassment has only put the last nail on their glorified coffin.

    4 out of 5 stars St. Anger.......2005-11-03

Metallica. This is a name that we will never forget. This is a name that has changed the term "heavy metal" as we know it. First was Kill 'Em All. This was a revolutionary album that defined the very message of metal. Next was Ride The Lightning. This magnificent disc took all that was excellent about Kill 'Em All and improved it tenfold. We all thought this was as good as it would get, that it could not get any more superlative. We were all proved so very wrong in 1986, with Master Of Puppets, the band's third album. The glory went on from there. Next was ...And Justice For All, The Black Album, Load, and Reload. Now we have St. Anger. This could likely be the band's most exceptional effort yet. Many have called this 2003 masterpiece worthless, terrible, and abysmal. I can see why many may think that. The album was too heavy for some! However, I am here to state the pros and cons of the individual songs in an open and balanced manner and weigh both sides of the trial.

    Frantic: 9.5/10

Pros: Execllent message, a "live for the moment" song. Nice pre-verse riff.

    Cons: Somewhat repetitive.

    St. Anger: 9/10

Pros: Starts out solid, then slams into the jams hard!

    Cons: Also somewhat monotonous.

    Some Kind Of Monster: 8.75/10

Pros: Nice opening riff. Spawned forth an entire documentary!

    Cons: Mediocre vocals.

    Dirty Window: 8/10

    Pros: Nice and heavy.

    Cons: Also mediocre vocals.

    Invisible Kid: 10/10

Pros: I think this is the best song on the album, fast opening session. powerful words.

    Cons: N/A

    My World: 9.5/10

Pros: Good message. nice transitions between verses.

Cons: Rather obnoxious. A little too explosive at some small parts.

    Shoot Me Again: 9.5/10

    Pros: Nice message. Jammin' riffs!

    Cons: Not too powerful opening.

    Sweet Amber: 7.9/10

Pros: Powerful vocals. Interesting vocal arrangement.

    Cons: Repetitive verse construction.

    The Unnamed Feeling: 8/10

Pros: Also good message. Nice riffs.

Cons: A little too long for being so slow. Not the most powerful words.

    Purify: 8/10

Pros: Nice vocal choice. A "wipe the slate clean" song.

    Cons: OK vocal arrangement.

    All Within My Hands: 8.5/10

Pros: Good choice of filters. Nice and long.

    Cons: Changes tempo too often.

And there you have it. My review of the greatest Metallica CD of all time. I only have one more complaint. Bring back the guitar solos and it'll all be perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Full of energy.......2005-10-24

In my opinion Metallica is the best band of the sort. Their St'Anger album is certainly different than others, and might not appeal to somebody right away. I have not been convinced after the first time I heard it, but after hearing Frantic, Some Kind Of Monster and St Anger live last year I must say they are as good as ever, and maybe even better. St Anger album is full of energy, and heavy sounds that only Metallica can produce, with addition of a crude garage band mix.
DVD that comes with the album is very interesting to see as well, and makes everything more complete. There is no other band that can play with so much energy and power. This album is a must have for any previous Metallica fan (that is if you are not a fan after hearing just a couple of their ballads played frequently on the radio).

The greek byzantine choir again does an amazing job of expressing the dynamic splendor of one of the most influential composers of byzantine music. Anyone interested in byzantine music should add this CD to their collection.

4 out of 5 stars One of the most important composers of the 13th century.......1999-02-08

A very good rendition of some of the most important works of Ioannis Papadopoulos Koukouzelis, undoubtly the greatist composer of Greek church music in the 13th century. Most pieces deal with words from St. John's Apocalypose. Powerful, majestic interpretations, full of the splendor of the last years of the Byzantine empire. A strong sense of the feelings of mankind facing God and eternity. One of the best studio recordings of Greek church music (and, actually, one of the very few releases devoted exclusively to Koukouzelis). Highly recomended.

4 out of 5 stars this cd rocks.......2004-01-26

Metallica has yet to in my opinion make a bad cd. every one they have made i have. I also contain their vynals and they have yet to prove me wrong. I feel that this cd proves what kind of artists they are once morer how ever nothing beats master of puppets and kill em all.

5 out of 5 stars The Ramones Live!.......2003-09-21

The B-Sides of this single are excelent covers of the Ramones. It is a MUST-HAVE for collectors and fans alike.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2003-08-23

I stood with Metallica through all the cries of sellout through the 90's. Sure, some of the songs, were not all that great, but I always figured they would eventually get serious and go back to their roots. Well, this was their attempt. Turns out they forgot what their roots were.

      5 out of 5 stars amazing song.......2003-08-10

The riff to this song is so good! Metallica just keep doing it, they just keep churning out some of the best music that's out there. The Ramones covers on the single are pretty good too. They do a [great] job on Commando.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2003-08-09

Now that it is offical that they sold out (a.k.a. the Metallica dolls) and their latest sorry attemp at a song, not to mention what they consider "art" on their covers. I for one can say that this singe isn't worth the plastic used for the CD case. Don't bother, it ... (and yes, it is THAT bad).
