Despite the advent of the '00s, thoroughly blunted longhairs wearing three-quarter-length T-shirts still boot around the suburbs in painted vans listening to roaring metal. Fittingly, a whole new crop of post-Dazed and Confused-era stoner rockers--Fu Manchu, Monster Magnet, and arguably the kings of them all, Queens of the Stone Age--provide a shredding contemporary score for righteous three-finger devil salutes. On Songs for the Deaf, core members bassist Nick Oliveri and singer-guitarist Josh Homme (also see Kyuss) balance pure guitar-induced carnage with more complex, though no less aggressive, speed rock that whips by so fast it creates its own breeze. Opening with the 90-second "The Real Song for the Deaf"--a cheeky and amorphous bit of bloopy electronica quite possibly recorded at the bottom of a swimming pool--the disc explodes with track two, a toxic squall of power chords and now-classic Olivera death howls. It's here the album's recurring concept/conceit is introduced as a generic-sounding announcer from L.A.'s "Clone" radio spits out some psychobabble reinforcing the tired if true cliché that commercial radio stinks. Similar mock broadcasts surface elsewhere, but they're easily forgivable, given the bounty on offer. Homme-powered tracks dominate--the lurching, weirdly springy "No One Knows" is a kind of "Monster Mash" for grownups; the vocal harmony-driven "The Sky Is Falling" is almost dreamy until a small army of guitars surges to the front lines to begin firing. And a lyrically winking hidden track, "Mosquito Song," is either an in-joke of ridiculous proportions or a declarative statement about the level of musicianship lurking just beneath the quaking veneer of the Queens' sound. Either way, genuine excitement comes early and often on Songs for the Deaf. It's a remarkable achievement--a hard rock record so good that it immediately evokes a conspiratorial fervor that makes you want to tell everyone you can about it. Er, job done. --Kim Hughes

Fantastic stuff.......2007-06-27
This is their best album. Forget all the people who say Rated R is the best they have. If you want the singles you hear on the radio and some other great tracks you won't be able to get out of your head, this is the Queens of the Stone Age album for you.
The Greatest Album Ever! Enough Said........2007-05-20
Awesome, totally awesome! This is a MUST HAVE for anyone who loves to ROCK! enough said.
Yup, it still rawks!.......2007-05-04
Even after two years of listening to this album it still kicks in every way. Gritty, kenetic, and just plain cool. This album could've easily sat on the record store shelves in the mid-70's but thankfully we have something to place in the "oughts" - 00's. There are so few masterpieces that come out nowadays and I can only name a handfull over the last few years (Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium, Procupine Tree - In Absentia, Tool - Lateralus...) and QOTSA - Songs for the Deaf can stand proudly beside these albums and wave the flag of butt-kick' rawk.
I have a song I want to sing... it's "A SONG FOR THE DEAF." .......2007-02-19
I got this CD as a Valentine's Day present... because I'm in love with Josh. I really love the sound of his voice. He takes me away. I can't believe that Nick is on the CD! He's an awesome screamer! I really love Josh though. He's my Valentine. I'll do anything for him. I'll even die for him!

"Songs for the Deaf" is kind of a dissapointment, when it comes to "Stoner Rock" Even though the genere isn't filled with that many bands, there are better albums to listen to in this genere. "Clutch", Fu-Man-Chu", "Monster Magnet", "Entombed" and "Kyruss" (members from QOTSA are present here, or should I say, before QOTSA) are much better. This is a basic album, with nothing to special. I was expecting a bit more variety, and some more jams, but at times the album starts to drag through the mud. Its not a bad album, its just not as good as I believe it could be, considering there are some great muscians on this album

The secret song.......2006-01-10
Now read this review carefully and try not to be a dumb-a$$
and click no just because you don't understand. There's a
hidden song on this CD most people don't know about.
You know about the hidden track mosquito song
at the end, but there's another song,
if you wanna call it a song at the beginning.
Actually it's before track one. READ. Play
quotsa songs for the deaf cd. The cd will start,
( I have to explain it this way cause some idiots weren't
getting it.)youre at the beginning of track, keep pressing
the rewind button untill you go past the beginning of
track one. Now your on minus track one. Keep going till you reach the end.
The hidden song is called,
"the real song for the deaf." Try it,
it works. Here are some other cd's
you can rewind from the beginning.

Give me Torro...Give me some more..........2005-10-15
This album is the pinnacle of the mountain that is Queens of the Stone Age. Quite a collection of talent in one place and forever...Josh Homme...his killer guitar tones and monster riffs and smooth vocals (did I mention the song writing)...Nick Oliveri's manic bass skills....Troy Van Der whatever adds great dimension with his guitar work...Dave Grohl smashing the heads right off the drums...Mark Lanegen's vocals (the harmonies between Lanagen and Homme over these songs is the cream filling of your favorite dessert...the dessert of desert rock).
I was fortunate to catch Queens on tour in Denver just after this was released...man, they delivered the goods...totally blew me away..it was the most righteous musical experience EVER (see 'em at a small venue so the sonic ferocity permiates your very soul)..they played nerely every song on this album plus some of their older stuff...
The opener MILLIONAIRE shreds right out of the gate (There's a slower version of this song on Desert Session Vol 4/5 where the lyrics are easier to understand...it's good too but this one is the best...this song is also on the XXX soundtrack)
NO ONE KNOWS really showcases the talents of Homme as a song writer and guitarist...the quirky riff in an odd time proves there are none like the Queens out there.
SONG FOR THE DEAD...one of the best songs on the album (and in the rock universe)...here everyone really showcases their talents..it starts with Homme's wicked riffage (and tone), then becomes punctuated with Grohls brutal drum attacks...the whole band kicks in..pause...guitars trade licks..and then they take off again...this a titan among rock songs...
THE SKY IS FALLING...is a marvel of textured and layered guitars... on top of it all is Homme's and Lanagan's sweet inteplay of vocals.
GO WITH THE FLOW...is a fun and really accesible song on the album...the lead guitar is really smooth and seductive (the video is really cool too)
DO IT AGAIN...this song is really in the Queens mold of older albums...it's a song about sex..in fact according to Homme 90% of the songs are about sex....
GOD IS IN THE RADIO...this was a song Homme wrote while with KYUSS (get SKY VALLEY today) but didn't fit with the band's musical direction at the time...but it's a bad-a$$ song (..."you come back..another day...and do no wrong"...) the solo is the mightiest of all solos on the album.
SONG FOR THE DEAF is just epic (especially live).
This album is their best..hands down...get the version with the DVD (you get to see them in studio and at early shows with Grohl...plus Homme directs Grohl on some of the songs...the DVD is really insightful).
Just click 'buy now' so your life can be better.
The Kings of the Desert Demons.......2005-08-02
What does it take to make a perfect album. If your Queens of the Stone Age it just takes a year in France (where they recorded much of this album). The was the first Queens album that Josh Hommes and Nick Oliveria spent a long amount of time making, and it paid off. Perfecting each song, each chorus, each riff, and detailing each chord. Radio broadcasts throughout the album give it the emotion that the whole world is listening to it with you. Verses taste like the desert floor, while the crescendos feel like water on your dry, dirty mouth. Its perfectly balanced for you appretiate all aspects of the envirorment Hommes and Oliveria mother with crunchy guitar distortion, violent-calm solos and pounding bass tones. Headbangers such as You Think I Ain't Worth A Dollar, Six Shooter, and A Song For The Dead make it edgey while pliable songs like Mosquito Song, Another Love Song, Gonna Leave You give it dignity and grace. The Highlight of the album...Song for the Deaf. Starting out with a bass line from hell transfering into the childhood dream of a axe murderer. Hommes' vocals tear threw the choatic mess with extrodanary apathy and knowledge. The song makes you feel as if the storm of the rapture is starting outside, then ending in a atrocious held out note. Welcome the 8th deadly sin - the gods of acid rock.

One of the few classics in the 21th century.......2005-07-13
This album is already classic. I still love it, and listen to it a lot. Everything about this album is just great. The songs, the order of the tracklisting is perfect. The Radio parts tie them together, it works so well. Josh Homme and Nick Oliviery play top notch. Dave Grohl OWNS the drums. Mark Lanegan's vocals rule. "No one KNOWS" is the classic song here, so is "First it Giveth".
Too bad that 3 of the 4 members left QOTSA (altough Oliviery was the only official member to leave), the follow up is very weak.
Interesting, but slightly overrated ?.......2005-05-08
Queens of the Stone Age are a tremendeously good rock 'n roll band in the 2000's. Among all the nu-metal crap there still are rock bands left, not rap bands only. Their style is kinda unique in many songs, Josh Homme's cool, sludgy voice and their "small-time", but infectious and groovy guitar style, mixed together is candy for your ears, and there' always a sense of fun in their songs, and I like it, their not a political band, their a fun rock 'n roll band, with roots and influences more from classic rock bands instead of punk bands, and that's why they stand out in the alternative circles too, cause they don't sound like another Pearl Jam copycat, like so many others do. The hit song "No One Knows", is simplistic but catchy as hell, and gives you a great vibe, "Go With The Flow", is also great, and these tracks are perhaps the biggest pleasers, but there's more. "You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire", the opening track is awesome! With it's fast singing and great epic guitar, make a grea tstart. "First It Giveth", is slightly lame, but I love it though. "Gonna Leave You", is a little simplistic and clichéd but it works, "Do It Again" sounds like a hockey anthem in my ears, but it's different, cool. "God Is In The Radio", is one of my favs. too, it's brilliant. "mosquito Song", has a really, really nice acoustic guitar, and some great, but perhaps sad singing by Homme. Well, I wouldn't consider this a masterpiece, simply cause there are some weak tracks too, that could've been cut out, but it's a great album all in all, QOTSA play desert-stoner-rock, you actually get a feeling of being in the desert without water, when you listen to it, and that you're really stoned in the desert, ha ha, no but, they have an unique style, and that's a very precious thing, today! Respect!!!

Best album of 2002 by far.......2004-04-30
There are so many great things to say about this album. First, tracks like No One Knows, God Is In The Radio, Millionare, and Do it Again are amazing. The only weak track is probably Another Love Song. Josh Hommes is one of the best guitarists of today. Him along with Mark Lanegan together is great. You would probably know Mark from Screaming Trees and Josh from Kyuss. Dave Grohl is probably the best drummer in existance. Although lots of people bag to differ. I would say that Dave Lombardo (Slayer) and Lars Ulrich (Metallica) are the other influencial drummers. I love the brutal screamings of bassist Nick Oliveri. It really puts me in the mood. I would recommend this album to anyone who loves stoner rock, metal and grunge.
A Decent Follow-Up to Rated R.......2004-04-29
Although not a s good as Rated R, this album can sure hold its own against any rock album. All of the songs are heavy and good, and I love the pure screaming energy that QOTSA can give a song. The sense of humor is really funny. Like putting fake radio stations broadcasts between songs. No One Knows and Millionaire are probably the best songs on the album, even tho Go With The Flow and Six Shooter are extremely good. i think it's a really good album all in all. Go out and buy this, along with Rated R.
Ghrol fans unite!.......2003-03-19
Dave is one lucky guy. He has played drums on the two best albums of the last five years.
I accidentally picked up the clean version of this album at a local superstore. I always open CDs as I leave the store and throw away all the wrapper stuff in the trash. I didn't realize that I had the clean version until I cracked the cellophane airlock.
The editing on this version of the album is a treat. All swear words are beeped out with a compressed, grating loud beep. Maybe that is par for the course, but I would hope not. It kind of seems like a joke the way they beeped out the swearing. Sort of a curse upon thee for buying the album from a superstore.
The clean version is not bad though. There really isn't that much objectionable material. Most of it is contained in "Six Shooter". I would recommend the explicit version for moral reasons, but you can't really go wrong with this one.
The rockin is hard. Not as heavy as the old Kyuss stuff. But the creepy melodicism of Queens more than makes up for it. "First It Giveth", "The Sky Is Fallin'", and "Hangin' Tree" are all better than "No One Knows"; but the format might be too long for radio. This isn't '72 after all. People can't be expected to listen to only one thing for more than 2.75 minutes.
If you are a fan of music and/or think Craig Killborn is a dish then this would be a great album for you.

Great Band, Amazing CD........2005-08-31
This is a wonderful Album. What I find interesting is that it almost has this cinematic quality to it,such as the amazing beginning of "You think I aint worth a dollar but I feel like a millionaire" to the brilliant conclusion in "Songs for the Deaf" which is probably one of my favorite songs ever from any band. It's funny to because a lot of people think that the whole radio tone of the cd is offsetting, but I find its a great way to pull people in because it's such a great peice and so interesting to listen to. The only song I dont like is "Hanging tree" I just think its too out of place and ruins the vibe of the rest of the CD, but, overall, this is one great CD that anyone who wants a good time listening to rock should definitely pick up.
Go with the Flow... and enjoy this album!.......2005-04-01
This is a great record. It still has the crunching, trippy guitars and punk ferocity we've come to expect from Queens of the Stone Age but there is something else. At times, there seems to be some pop sensibilities thrown in, along with some great melodies -- and that's not necessarily a bad thing!

Album Description
The 1953 recording features the spectacular twenty-six year old Leontyne Price, accompanied by Samuel Barber at the Library of Congress. The duo's entire recital is issued whole for the first time. In this recital the soprano and composer give the world premiere performance of Barber's "Hermit Songs", and perform Henri Sauguet's "La Voyante" (The Fortune Teller) and other songs by Barber, Poulenc and Fauré.
This remarkable 1938 recording, released to the public for the first time, gives us the 28 year old baritone, Samuel Barber in 12 songs, accompanying himself at the piano. These little known performances reveal Barber as a singer/player of uncommonly deep communicative power. The performances (issued in cooperation with Mr. Barber's estate and the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia) include folk songs from England, America, the Tyrol and Tuscany as well as lieder by Schumann, Brahms, Mendelssohn, C.P.E Bach and Schubert.

good not excelent but close.......2003-05-01
its good not much more to say. this will rock you out.fans will love it and dave grolh has made avery good change to the line up. buy it if you like any songs they rellese.
Brilliant.......2003-01-20
This album is quite simply, brilliant. Pretty much a pure rock album, "Songs For The Deaf" opens with "You Think I Ain't Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire", a heavy rock tune with vocals by Queens Of The Stone Age's bassist, Nick Oliveri. This song is definitely my favourite song, but the rest of the album is awesome also.
Their first single of the album "No One Knows" is a funky, upbeat tune which is almost always guaranteed to get you up and rocking. Dave Grohl provides excellent drumming all throughout the album, but this would be the finest example of just how good he is.
"First It Giveth" is another highlight, one of the best tracks on the album. It is a great song, backed up by good vocals, a rocking riff and a stunning chorus.
Track 8, "Go With The Flow" is much like "First It Giveth" in its rock riff and its excellent vocals. One of the band's finest songs they have ever made.
"A Song For The Deaf" is a terrific contrast. The song starts with a heavier riff than most of the other songs on the album, but once the song reaches the chorus, it is a much mellower riff and vocalist Mark Lanegan joins with main vocalist Josh Homme in a dark, monophonic tune.
Overall, this album is magnificent and impressive and much like Rated R, it has stoner rock tunes, but this time with a bit more of the rock and a bit less of the stoner (but not too much). This album is definitely one of my favourite (if not favourite) album of 2002 and it will continue to be in my CD player for a VERY long time.
If you love great rock, buy this album. You won't regret it.

Customer Reviews:
A worthy album!.......2003-12-29
Take a dash of Nirvana, a hint of Red Hot Chili Peppers, some Metal Lite* but heavy on the gee-tar, and you got yourself a trashing, crashing and fast grudge delight that will please many fans of this music genre. There are some fantastic tracks on this album and anyone into the indie scene will appreciate it. You can not go too far wrong getting this album.
Finally... A new sound for us all.......2003-04-23
Since this is my first Queens CD, I didn't know what to expect. What a refreshing move away from the mainstream shlock. Although you'd be more apt to find music like BT, old Oingo Boingo, Devo or (my current fave) middle east flavored music, these guys make 'raw' sound far better than anything you would have expected. Wanna drive at night on the open road w/ the sunroof open and the sound cranked? These are the boys and this is the CD. I can't wait to hear their other CDs.
Like a diverse music portfolio? Then Queens of the Stone Age's Songs for the Deaf belongs on your shelf.
The Queens of the Stone Age Do it Again.......2003-04-05
This, the 3rd album from So. Cal robot-rockers Queens of the Stone Age has been largely recognized for the drumming presence of former Nirvana and current Foo Fighters member Dave Grohl, who picked up the sticks and played on all but one song on this amazing album. But although the drums can't be overlooked, the main draw into this album should be the diverse styles. It goes from screaming punk metal w/ Nick Oliveri on vocals to the soft growl of former Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan and back to Homme, the vocalist on the radio hit, "No One Knows". This is a concept album, it's supposed to be what you might hear on the radio on a drive from Los Angeles to the Joshua Tree in California, Queens of the Stone Age style. But even if you don't get the concept, if you "get" good music, then you should definitely "Get" this album.
Great CD.......2002-12-07
This CD is one of the best i own. No One Knows is obviously the best track on it and is the reason i bought it. It has a great beat and the lyrics are also great. If you are a fan, buy the CD if u already havent. And if your not a fan, buy it anyway, it will make your day.
