An excellent output from one of my favorite doom riff masters and friends.
As a matter of fact I think this might be my all time favorite release from Wino and co. in anyone of his many fine vehicles. It is that good!!
The lyric are sharp biting political commentary and the music is some of Wino's finest ever including his St. Vitus efforts. The vocals are also as good as I have heard on any recent doom release. This Cd stands tall next to not only Wino's work but also along side all time classic doomsters like Trouble , Candlemass, Electric Wizard etc..So do not hesitate to buy it and play it loud !!! Let There Be Doom !!!!

A damn masterpiece! A total genre (re)definining work of art! If you're into bands of the stoner doom type, or are any kind of "Wino" fan... what are you waiting for... you NEED this album!

intelligent stoner rock.......2005-10-22

right from the start, this album lurches forward with a heavy sound and a solid groove. the music is heavy, but tuneful and never sways too far away from it's foundations in pure rock and roll. there are lots of different textures and moods applied and some amazing and thoughtful arrangements. i especially dug the song "Half Mast", with it's rolling basslines and acoustic guitars; showing an appreciation for prog rock and even a little bit of blues. the production of this record is stellar and manages to capture the intensity of the band's live show without losing a bit of the crystal clear sound quality. but above all, the songs just shine with brilliance and a sense of maturity that one would come to expect from the seasoned doom veteran behind the guitar and microphone. if there is such a thing as as intelligent doom stoner rock, then The Hidden Hand have set the template for how it should be done. a cornerstone album.

Wino have done very interesting things in the field of Doom metal, St Vitus, The Obssessed and now The Hidden Hand , were doom metal is taken to a next level, to another building, sabbath riffs, Floydesque philosophy and melancholic and progresive changes of structures , also very deligthfull intrumental pieces , the sound of this charming trio is very heavy, poetic in lyrics and visual concept and artwork is appealing in a way hard to be described in words, Wino from my point of view can be easily defined as a visionary musician a key for the future of heavy music, lets see if this their second offer reaches the status of classic as some crtics have described "mother Teacher Destroyer"

Heavy, Heavy, Heavy, Heavy, Heavy........2005-06-03

This time around Wino and the boys take it slow, really slow and add a few layers of ultra-heaviness to the recording. On my first listen, I was a bit disappointed at the lack of melody and "dirge-like" tempo to most of the songs. I thought of Spinal Tap's "Stonehenge" about 30 seconds into the album. On repeated listenings, however, the album really grows on you. The slower tempos really set a mood; and enhances the listeners ability to hear and absorb the lyrics. There is also some tasty organ playing throughout which adds a bit of a psychedelic flavor to a few tunes. Most importantly, Wino rips off some of his best lead breaks in recent memory.
All in all a worthy sophmore effort and must purchase for any fan of the band or Wino's music.
