Batiz dirige obras de Rodrigo.......2005-11-15

Antes que el sello Naxos grabara las obras de Rodrigo,
estaba esta grabaccion, la que era y aun es recomendada.
Batiz es un gran exponente de la musica de Rodrigo,
aclamado por el mismo compositor, Batiz dirige las
obras de Rodrigo con claridad, y a la vez mantiene
las obras con el espiritu original que el compositor
expresa. En esta grabaccion el maestro Batiz dirige
tres orquestas:la Royal Philharmonic, London Symphony;
y Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico. Los
unicos conciertos que aqui no aparecen son: Concierto
para una Fiesta, y Concierto como un Divertimento.
Una grabaccion de recomendaccion maxima...

A great introduction to Rodrigo!.......2004-02-11

I had much of this material on vinyl, and it's great to have these packaged on 4 full budget-priced CDs. The sound is quite acceptable, although a little bright, which was common for early digital recordings from the 80's. But, they're otherwise clear and full. There are better recordings of the guitar concertos (which is a crowded field), but they hold up fairly well - and are better than Batiz' rerecordings of the some of the guitar concertos he did some 10 years ago on ASV.
The other concertos are quite nice as well. Distinctively Rodrigo-esque!
Anyone interested in this set will want to invest in Batiz' more recent survey with his Mexican State Orchestra of Rodrigo works.
Highly recommended!

Blind Can Hear..........2003-02-13

This is an album dedicated to the works of one of the most prominent Spanish composers of the 20th Century. His music is luscious, melodic, with uncompromised energy and excitement. Rodrigo was blind and had a love affair with the Concerto form, and this is Batiz's dedication to the man and his many works in that form.

I too disagree with the reviewer who said the recording was muddy. I think it captures the music well, and all of the soloists come out as intended in the score. I think the balance and tone are wonderful. I hope that helps!

Excellent Rodrigo compendium........1999-09-20

This is great music, with great performances, on a very good recording. (I disagree with the other online reviewer--to me the soloists sound crisp and rich.)

Rodrigo and Batiz deserve better than this,.......1998-10-30

As a long-time fan of Joaquin Rodrigo and a more recent fan of Enrique Batiz I eagerly looked forward to getting acquainted with some of Rodrigo's rarely heard pieces. Unfortunately thoses pieces will remain rarely heard due to the poor production quality of the CD. The sound was muddy and indistinct. Most of the tracks sound as if the microphone was under the stage. I had to strain to hear the guitar, harp, and flute soloists.

The Rarer Pieces.......2000-07-28

As very few will probably check this CD out (as the number of votes I've received for my Vol.1 review has proved--2), I will keep the number of words to a minimum. This second installment of Marco Polo's epic series of Lumbye's music is by far the most delightful. As far as I know, all the numbers in this set are premiere recordings. This volume starts out with the invigorating "A Little Ditty for the Party, Galop" and ends with the charming "Goodnight Polka". As with Vol.1, the Tivoli Symphony Orchestra, with Bellicampi conducting, perform this music masterfully. However, the sound quality is still a bit poor for a DDD recording (sound seems distant). But on the whole, this volume is excellent. It's got my 5 star vote! For those who care, read my review for volume 1 for more information.

One of the best of the Marco Polo Josef Strauss series........2002-09-09

This is one of the best of Marco Polo’s Josef Strauss Edition. Mika Eichenholf allows to quick polkas to gallop fleetly, the march has plenty of swagger, the polkas mazur have poise, and there is a lilt and a joy in the waltzes that make you welcome rather than dread the many repeats. Josef Strauss often succeeded in creating dances in the minor key, but there are none of them here. What is here is his last composition, the “Hesperus-Bahnen Waltz”, published as Op 279, after the forty-three year old composer’s death.

Album Description

All the works on this unique album are rediscovered gems by Mexican composers, some famous, some obscure - but all enjoyable. Founded in 1996, the Alauda Ensemble is a group of young Mexican musicians dedicated to the rescue of forgotten or unpublished music, from the traditional repertoire to Latin American music. Most of the ensemble's members are pupils of Samuel Máynez Champion, distinguished violinist and professor at the National Conservatory of Mexico since 1994. Máynez studied violin with Henryk Szeryng and Peter Rybar and holds degrees from both the Yale University School of Music and the Verdi Conservatory in Milan. Soprano Minerva Hernandez studied at the National Conservatory, where she now teaches. Her repertoire runs from Baroque through Lied, opera, zarzuela and contemporary music. Pianist Juan Carlos Rodriguez has made two previous CDs with Alauda Ensemble and has performed in all of Mexico's major cities.

Hight Energy at its best.......2000-06-15

This album is packed with so much energy its amazing that my speakers still work after playing this cd. I first heard her at a concert performing no seas malo, and that song rocks. Dejame soñar is another bad song. If you like hight energy dance music this one is for you. With only two ballads in the album and two remixes of the ballads everythin in here is pumpin' and ready to make you dance.

Minerva Is Really Good.......1999-12-12

This is probably one of my favorite albums ever. It has a great sound that is hard to find and hear on the Radio. Here in New York you only hear salsa, merengue, and ballads in the spanish speaking stations. If they played more of this music it would definately shock people in a good way. This album is great for working out or at a party. It is non stop techno pop. Minerva did a great job on this debut album.

I think minerva has a sound that i wish would give radio station the courage to keep playing. perhaps even develope a format for a station, which in my opinion is lacking in the usa. Im a dj and feel its time to give great artist like minerva the welcome and open the doors to all others that fall under this kind of format.

One of the better Deftones imports.......2005-01-10

The imports from the Deftones newest self-titled album have been by far the best imports ever released for album. Most of the old Deftones imports just had the title track, and some live songs, or maybe an acoustic one now and then, but I guess the record company finally decided to give the people what they want. Both of the Imports for the self-titled, "Minerva" and "Hexagram", contain unreleased music. I think this is the first time when all the singles from the album have had an unreleased song on them. "Minerva" is definitely the better buy of the two however. Not only do you get the wonderfully magnificent title song, but you also get two unreleased rarities. The first is a cover of Helmet's "Sinatra". The Deftones definitely make the song all their own, and when it's done, you can't really imagine that the song wasn't theirs to begin with. "Sleep Walk" is an odd experimental cover song that will definitely turn some heads of fans. All in all this is a great import single to get, because you can't beat what you're getting and the price you're paying. I think they're going for $5.00 on here. What better reason to buy?

Deftones - The Sweetest Perfection.......2005-01-07

For those of you who need to learn a thing or two about music: The track "Sleepwalk" is a cover song originally written and performed by a duo that went by the name of Santo & Johnny. This gorgeous, hypnotic song reached #1 on the top 40 billboard in August of 1959. Their sparse music career lasted until 1964, and "Sleepwalk" was their only hit.
Minerva is a wonderful, uplifting tune. As far as "Sinatra" and "Sleepwalk" go...well, any obscure deftones find is a rare gem, as many of their songs are--hard chords spun through dark, seductive, and often narrative lyrics and melodies, accompanied by Chino Moreno's sultry sing/scream--and I cannot think of any band that has satisfied me more in the past decade.

Very Good for a Single CD.........2004-10-02

trust me when i say this: this CD single is awesome. Although i previously bought deftones prior to this, it doesnt mean that i don't like Minerva. In fact, i love it, even though there are way better songs on the rest of the album. Overall, a good product to buy if you like the Deftones. The song "Sinatra" that they covered off of Helmet is awesome. And os is Helmet. This song is the song that got me into Helmet in the first place. And all i have to say is: thank you, Deftones! The last song, "Sleepwalk", is like a nice sort of song to go walk and listen to at the same time.. It's also a nice sort of "beach" music.

When She Sings It's Over.......2004-08-11

If you were to order this import, no matter the cost, only for the title track - 'Minerva' - I would understand utterly and completely, because even with only three tracks, this song is so utterly gorgeous that it's worth it. As something that evokes strong emotions in everyone, while most universally agree on its beauty, it's a hidden gem in the world. I would recommend this song to any living, breathing person on earth, and say it with my held held high. If you haven't heard 'Minerva', then you need to.

Oh yes.......2003-08-04

Track 1 "Minerva" is a fine ballad-type song by the Deftones, available on their new CD called Deftones. Track 2 "Sinatra" is a Helmet cover, from their old (1990) Strap It On days. The song is great and this kind of tribute has been missing in the industry. Track 3 "Sleep Walk" is also a cover, a famous jazzy guitar tune, laid back and easy. You will recognize it. Overall, this is a very interesting and varied single, and the B-sides (produced by the Deftones) are worth it.

Classic voices, good orchestral support, excellent Wagner. . . ........2007-03-21

What a wonderful CD! And no one to this point has reviewed it? Toscanini conducts the excellent NBC Symphony Orchestra, with Lauritz Melchior (one of the great "heldentenors") and Helen Traubel singing the roles of Siegmund and Sieglinde respectively, in excerpts from Wagner's "Ring."

Act 1, Scene 3 may be one of the best things that Wagner ever created. Melchior begins by singing of his dilemma. His strong, heroic voice is well displayed. When he sings of his father, the poignancy and plaintiveness of his voice is clear with his ringing "Walse." This is a powerful start to the great duet.

Traubel (as Sieglinde) responds with her stirring "Der Manner Sippe," in which she describes her state and the visit of s stranger who left a sword. Many had tried to wrest it free, but had failed. There is poignancy, again, as she sings of the situation. And a wonderful voice she exhibits. She shows off a strong, rich voice, well suited for her character. Her lower register is tied nicely to higher notes.

Melchior (as Siegmund) responds with his elegiac "Wintersturme." His stentorian tone fits this segment of the scene most nicely. The orchestra plays well behind him, but his voice is never overwhelmed by the orchestration.

Traubel responds with "Du bist der Lenz." A well sung version, with her rich voice doing justice to this piece. The dramatic tension of this scene continues to build, as Sieglinde "raises the ante" with Siegmund. Haunting leitmotifs of the bigger picture of the gods and their plans emerge toward the end of this.

Melchior begins a response with "Ein Minnetraum," but this lovely fragment gets cut off as Sieglinde begins to see things as they are. Sieglinde's "O stille" signals the beginning of a slowly building tension until the dramatic finale. Her "Doch nein" until the end of the scene moves toward a wonderful crescendo. With this, Sieglinde is coming to the haunting realization of who Siegmund really is. The singing is ravishing, as she asks a series of questions of Siegmund and gets the answers that she expects--such as the name of Siegmund's father, "Walse," and his own real, proper name. The back and forth between Melchior and Traubel is affecting, with the orchestral support behind them. And Siegmund pulls the mighty sword, placed there by his father, from its moorings. The music swells.

Then, the finale, with Siegmund and Sieglinde realizing who they are and deciding that that makes no difference, as their love transcends normal bounds. Powerful stuff; Wagner at his best in one of the great scenes from all of opera.

There are also two other scenes on this CD, the dawn in "Gotterdammerung" through Siegfried's Rhine Journey; the Immolation scene at the conclusion of the opera (and the entire "Ring").

This is well worth acquiring for its classic Wagnerian "Ring" works.
