4 out of 5 stars One of the best in black metal........2007-06-21

This Gorgoroth release is truly one of a kind. After hearing Twilight of the Idols, I honestly didn't expect much more than a mediocre release...but I definitely stand corrected on this one. This LP is loaded with constantly differing and original guitar riffs, industrial-type sound effects that give some of the songs a bit more emphasis, about the best and most intense vocalization of any other black metal band, and some great, eerie, and haunting melodies that are filled with utter creativity.

Track listings:

Incipit Satan- An amazing opener. Jam packed with originality and heavy guitar riffs. This song also features some of Gorgoroth's experimentation with industrial type sounds and ambience that is so often associated with this CD. Without a doubt, this song will take a firm grip on you and refuse to let go until it ends.

A World To Win- Begins with an interesting industrial effect that sounds as though it came straight out of a videogame (something only Gorgoroth would be able to pull off). This song also offers a great choral guitar riff that is surprisingly mellow for having come out of a black metal LP. Overall, it sounds great though.

Titani Til Satan- Features some great instrumentals, but the vocal layout lacks a bit, considering Gaahl only speaks in an awkwardly deep voice the whole song through.

Unchain My Heart!!!- Begins with a great melody that gives the listener a taste of haunting ambience. Not too long after, though, it picks right up and soars into an incredible arrangement of instrumental brutality and creativity, leaving the listener to experience its every unique twist and turn. Definitely a favorite.

An Excerpt Of X- This track is a bit too empty for my taste. It's mostly instrumental, with the exception of a few spoken lines, and doesn't really capture the listener's attention too much.

Ein Ein Au Blod Og Helvetesild- In its beginning moments, this track proposes some great drumming and guitar management, immediately picking up about 50 or so seconds in, therein presenting the listener with the intensity of Gaahl's demonic screams. Just before the end, Gorgoroth seems to layer the vocal screams so that the song draws its end in a whirlwind of chaos and malice. Overall, a pretty good song that gets your heart pumping.

Will To Power- More of an oddity than anything else, in my opinion. This track gives the listener some nice atmospheric ambience to listen to, but nothing more. No true vocals are featured- just distant spoken words in the background.

When Love Rages Wild In My Heart- Demonstrates some more good guitar riffs and reveals the eerie -almost vampiric- vocals of an unknown vocalist. Good song, overall.

In all, this album is a really good black metal release. The only complaint I have with it is that Gorgoroth, while seeming to focus a bit too much on experimentation, failed to give some of the songs the attention that they most likely need in order to become truly magnificent. Nevertheless, this is definitely worth picking up.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Black..........2005-10-19

This is pure black metal..plain and simple... If you dont like this and your into Black MEtal, somethin is wrong with you cuz this is evey black metal fans dream. Listen to it....CHERISH IT!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-07-24

This album is a fine example of the great works Gorgoroth can produce. At points heavy, at others haunting and slow, it seems these guys know exactly what to throw into their songs to make them the manifests of evil they are (and then make it sound good!)
I keep coming back to this cd again and again, every time as satisfied with it as the day I bought it. Any fan of black metal can do no wrong buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate Black Metal Art.......2003-03-02

This album is absolutely amazing, i picked it up yesterday and...what can i say, it blew me away. Every track sounds different from the next, riffs are constantly changed and interspersed to fit the mood, but mostly they are crushing riffs ala Amon Amarth style. This album has variety...which is something most black metal lacks in my opinion, and it transgresses beyond simple black metal. Vocals keep changing, form the usual Bm rasp to Pete Steele gothy type of singing, the guitar work from Infernus and King ov Hell is sheer power, and most of all the drumming...the rhythms and the blasting make me bang my head involuntarily. This is pure value for money. Black metal art...alike to emperor's later works. Also, this album is dedicated to the late Grimm (ex-drummer) by the band who is one of my all time favourites. RIP Grimm, your brothers have not let you down.

5 out of 5 stars The best Black Metal Album of 2000!!!.......2001-05-30

This album is one of the most original Black Metal Albums ever. Every track here is different from the other one. Gorgoroth, like Mayhem are taking Black Metal to a new level. The music is still heavy and fast, but there is an Industrial/Amb. influence that makes it killer. Track 4 (Unchain My Heart)has some of the heaviest riffs that Death Metal and Hardcore Metal would kill for. The last song has some guy that sings a little like Elvis and Peter Steele, while the music is still heavy. Old school Gorgoroth fans will like tracks 1,4, and 6 and if they like a little industrial added in and the music not reaching 200 miles an hour they will like the rest of the album has well. Track 7 is pure ambience with distorted screams here and there. To all the Black Metal people out their that ain't down with the Industrial stuff added in, check out the new Immortal and Satyricon.
