Although this group is long defunct, its one major recording will be fondly remembered for years--if not decades--to come. The Heroes consisted of rapper Michael Franti and percussionist Ron Tse; together, the San Francisco Bay area-based duo created a biting, politically savvy record that touched on both personal vulnerability and governmental venality. Franti used the microphone to preach about injustice, homophobia, materialism, and apathy. Although Public Enemy had long before established hip-hop's political potential, they never quite attained Franti's ability to translate black rage into universal themes. In the Heroes' best number, "Television, the Drug of the Nation," Franti raps, "Imagination is sucked out of our children by a cathode ray nipple / Television is the only wet-nurse that would create a cripple." Unfortunately, after extensive touring, the pair went their separate ways, Tse to a variety of solo projects and Franti to Spearhead. --Martin Johnson

History is so kind.......2007-03-17
This is, objectively, a pretty bad album. The only reason people could possibly be mistaken about that is the general nostalgic quality of history. People look back at this ridiculous album and for some reason see it as a cornerstone of 'conscious' rap. In reality it's nothing of the sort.
Largely ignored on its release, treated as an oddity by those who knew about it, this album is not the great political or artistic statement some reviewers would have you believe. It's certainly different, and if you're one of those tiresome people who believe anything different is 'better', you'll probably enjoy it. At the time of its release the only real hype around the album was based around its odd percussive elements, which turned out to be much more interesting conceptually than sonically.
Really this isn't even a rap album. It's spoken word, a form of performance art that I find incredibly difficult to tolerate even on good days. It's Franti rambling - strangely without passion or any real cleverness - over admittedly bizarre beats. But that's really it. And although I'd probably agree with you if you started lecturing me about how profanity is too rampant in entertainment, etc, it's just odd - almost Raffi-esque - to hear an entertainer use the word 'poop' in a song.
Franti moved on to more structured songwriting with Spearhead, whose work is much easier to listen to and somewhat more mature. Nostalgia aside, this album is probably best forgotten along with Me Phi Me and the Fu-Schnikens.
Best Album of All Time.......2007-02-27
Today more than ever I find the messages contained in this album are spot on. And I am not joking that this is my favorite album of all time. The music itself is wonderful as well. I really do wish that DH could again saddle up to do another album.
sensationally underrated rap album.......2006-10-18
I got this record back when it first came out, me being a fan of stuff like Nine Inch Nails, Public enemy, Tackhead etc. That there probably defines the sound of the record which is something like an industrial rap album.
It's brilliant. What it does is give a great rap vocalist a platform to preach on - Franti has quite a heavy voice - a good one - and it needs a heavy soundtrack behind it. The music is clever, catchy and powerful, the lyrics are well thought through but it's a very good mix of sounds right through the album. 'television' stands out a bit, 'socio genetic experiment' is another but it's top shelf right through.
Only failing of the record is that it's not going to fit a lot of people's tastes. Is a 100% different thing to any of Michael Franti's Spearhead stuff, which I like also but it's nothing like that. And because of that it may be hard for many people to conceptualise. It's not a classic rap album and nor is it a classic 'industrial' album.
Is definitely worth a listen - at least to Television and Socio... just to get a feel if you're interested or not - it is really clever and enjoyable.
Oh enough already!.......2006-06-29
I linked to this CD after checking out what the talented Micheal Franti is up to. With Speaheard, Franti has made some good stuff, but this....I bought it back when it came out and it fell right off my stereo. It is wack Wack WACK! The overwrought name of this group alone should indicate to all that these guys take themselves WAAAAY too seriously.
They have plenty to say, of course, but that doesn't make their music good. On the contrary, the lyrics are so preachy that it's like having a sledgehammer hitting you over the head. Not that the lyrics have the force hip hop lyrics should. These guys drone out their whiny manifestos without a trace of rhythm or passion. And, on top of that, the beats are among the worst I've ever heard on a rap album.
I have no idea what the Amazon.com reviewer above is talking about (and clearly neither does he). I was into hip-hop back when this thing was released. It sank without a ripple because there were plenty of excellent hip hop artists speaking their minds AND making great music (try Public Enemy, Ice Cube, or even Arrested Development). This CD was not important back when it was released, and it had no impact at all on the development of hip hop or rap.
Buy this now.......2006-02-12
I bought this album in 1992 on the strength of one song(Television...) that I heard once on the radio. I had been a fan of Public Enemy for a couple of years at that stage. After one listen it became an immediate favourite of mine( rare.... only radiohead OK Computer has had similar success since). My sisters, then heavy metal buffs( metallica, megadeth, sepultura, etc..) simillarly took only one hearing to become hooked. It was unusual to have the same taste, as they were metal and I was rap but there you go, who knows....
The album was a socially aware rant at society back in the day, using spot on lyrics, fantastic beats, scratches and instruments such as angle grinders and chains, but it hasn't lost relevance because we still have so much to learn.
I realise that it's now 2006, but this is still one of my favourite albums of all time. While some of the songs have dated slightly others (esp. Winter of the Long Hot Summer about Gulf War 1991) are all the more significant.
There is not a bad song (lyrically or musically) on the album and if I could give it 6 stars I would.

Excellent HYPOCRISY album !!!.......2006-09-29
HYPOCRISY have grown into an ultra amazing band ever since Peter Tagtgren took on the role of vocalist while still playing guitars.
This album is not as complex as the VIRUS album but still does a very good job of what it's supposed to do and is a necessary stage in HYPOCRISY's career.
Please don't under-estimate this album upon first listen because it gets better with each listen as do all their releases, especially from THE FOURTH DIMENSION onward.
No Black/Death metal band will ever match what they have done.
Buy as many HYPOCRISY CD's as you can afford...your hard earned cash will not go to waste !!!
The Hypocrisy of old. Fine form indeed........2006-05-21
Many bands seem to get a bit bored after years of playing the same style. Some of these bands chuck in the towel and call it quits. Others make a genuine attempt to do something different. This is not always successful, especially when a band chooses a new direction that leaves their well-earned fans feeling disillusioned and frustrated. I think Hypocrisy was very close to crossing this boundary with 2002's "Catch 22". Personally, I didn't find it too bad, but it definitely had a nu-metal feel to it that just didn't sit well with the hordes of death metal fans that have followed Hypocrisy since the early 90s.
So, what's "The Arrival" got to offer? The answer is, Hypocrisy have gone back to what they do best. This album is completely in the vein of "The Final Chapter" and "Hypocrisy" and is sure to make the previously disgruntled fans happy little campers.
For the uninitiated, Hypocrisy play death metal, but they have a rather distinctive sound. Most of their albums are a mix of slower melodic tracks and pedal to the metal more standard death metal tracks. It's the slower tracks that have always got my attention, but I'm glad the band chooses to mix things up. As they say, variety is the spice of life.
"The Arrival" is all by the books Hypocrisy. The science fiction theme runs through the album's lyrics and artwork once again, and the vocals constantly switch between a scream and a growl. Anyone who thought Peter's vocals were getting too soft will be sufficiently impressed (even more-so if you get the latest Bloodbath album).
"Erased" is a superb track that's up there with the bands best work, but there really aren't any filler tracks here. The production is great, as if we'd expect anything less when Peter Tagtgren is involved, and the music is catchy enough to demand repeat listens.
Overall, I've been pleasantly surprised by "The Arrival", as I thought the band's better years were behind them. Hypocrisy has shown that there's a lot of life left in this legendary Swedish act yet.
4.5 For A Great Intro To Tagtgren's World.......2006-04-03
On Music Choice during some odd time a couple years back I came across I very spacy song that i would soon forget about for sometime. I vaguely remembered it a few months later, but a riff stayed in my head from it so i figured downloading the song because i still remembered the title. It was quite hard to get but eventually i got a good version. Oh damn would this be the first on Hypocrisy's discography.
This was my first introduction to Hypocrisy, and oh do I love it.
Favorites include:
Born Dead Buried Alive - Very...spacey isn't the word but it's good
Eraser - Obvious single, but a great one
Slave To The Parasites - First song I heard by them, and damn addicting
Dead Sky Dawning - Pretty well done, all I have to say.
Finally Hypocrisy have made a comeback album, and oh did it take some time. Peter has made an album that will have all those that were questioning his sanity over the creation of "Catch 22" forgive all his sins and gladly raise the horns in the name of Hypocrisy.
AMAZING METAL FOR OPEN EARS.......2005-12-11
This album has some very strong points. I'll give a brief song description below:
1. BORN DEAD BURIED ALIVE - Excellent intro, quite alien spooky sounding, giving the listener the urge to keep listening on, then some amazing vocal use for an intro and then..."uuuw" comes in the vocals and a furious, ripping, pounding and utterly chaotic sound at mid/fast speed. Amazing intro track with great instrument and vocal use. 5/5
2. ERASER - Starts with a creepy yet mellow bass solo, then the guitars and drums come in, and then the vocals. This is a pretty good song and has a very melancholic guitar riff which holds the song together nicely. Slow paced, but suited. 4.5/5
3. STILLBORN - Starts off with a rhythm guitar solo. This track has a certain type of energy that just drives like a locomotive. Excellent screams. 4.5/5
4. SLAVE TO THE PARASITES - A mid/slow paced song that gets very emotionally distressed as the song progresses. One of my favourite tracks. Very interesting subject matter and I enjoy listening to this song when I'm angry. Melancholic guitars rule this almost suicidal song. The best vocal use on entire album. 5/5
5. NEW WORLD - Ok intro, but once the pounding double-kick bass drums come in you'll be hooked. This is my favourite song on the CD. It has a hard-driving energy chorus which is so perfect in my perception that I wish Hypocrisy would make more songs with powerful sounding choruses. Everything is as it should be on this track. 6/5
6. THE ABYSS - Feels like it belongs on 'The Fourth Dimension' for some reason, but this is an excellent song and a nice flashback to the style used on 'The Fourth Dimension'. Nice complex drumming patterns and chants to suit a slow paced melody. 5/5
7. DEAD SKY DAWNING - Starts with some heavy guitars and drum beats...and then the most amazing vocal intro to any song I've ever heard. WOW...Hypocrisy have really become a powerful band able to depress and anger anyone who listens to this track (not in a bad way, just a mix of emotions that works so well). Makes you think about what the world will become. This is another favourite. 6/5
8. THE DEPARTURE - Nice intro, severe screaming...this song would have been an amazing last track, but it is still excellent as second last track. Hypocrisy's maturity is most present in this song. Absolutely amazing vocals/lyrics/music. Another favourite without a doubt. 6/5
9. WAR WITHIN - Starts with a very black metal style intro which soon transforms into a heavy chuncky sound, and keeps changing back and forth through the whole song. Vocals are spot on. An excellent last track that lifts your spirit a bit after hearing the melancholic 'The Departure'. Nice finish.
The thing I really like about this album is that there are a few outstanding tracks which brings interest and climax to the album as a whole, and those few outstanding tracks will almost never bore, no matter how many times you hear them.
A must have for all HYPOCRISY fans and anyone who is currently listening to black/death metal, actually chances are that this album will appeal to most metal fans who are after a diverse and wierd yet known subject matter...mostly about humanity and how we are heading towards a dead world. I can't get enough of the subject and I'm glad their next album 'Virus' runs on very similar subject matter and more.
I would like to thank HYPOCRISY for producing some of the most innovative metal available today. Please keep at it strong, and never give in to trend or fan expectations. Follow your hearts and minds.
..Just a thought here..............2005-10-22
I just have to say that I was amused by a review (just a few down from this 1) that says in regards to this album "If you want to hear Hypocrisy retread an album from 7 years ago because the fans couldn't handle anything outside of the strict spectrum of death metal" & the title of the review itself "Hypocrisy sucumbs to fan outrage, churns out more the same." First, I just want to point out that like THAT reviewer, I think it's good for bands to be "new and innovative." In fact, some of my favorite metal albums are albums that fans or critics panned because it was a LITTLE different. But REMEMBER, a good artist wants to satisfy the majority of their fans if possible, especially if they want to continue to be successful & make a living. And most people in the underground scene BARELY make a living! So keep in mind that 'Catch 22' & 'Into the Abyss' got so-so reviews for a reason, & those are back to back albums, so if Hypocrisy wanted to be successful, they had to go back to what works!! Besides, this album isn't entirely "same old, same old" if you actually listen to it!! Eraser, Stillborn, Dead Sky Dawning, The Departure----GREAT songs that yes, have a feel like some past GREAT works, but they still encompass musically some differences that Hypocrisy havn't used yet. To fans who especially love 'Final Chapter,' 'Abducted,' 'Hypocrisy,' this album definitely has a blend of all 3 & more! **Oh yeah, as for Hypocrisy being called "death metal", yes they have done some death metal works, but in my opinion they have far succeeded beyond just typical death metal like their first few albums.**

Old school death metal.......2001-07-06
A really diferent line-up with 5 members and Peter Tägtgren was only one guitarist. It is really diferent from the Hipocrisy of almost everybody knows, but it is great. Sharp music with the old school touch of brutal death metal.
Penetralia.......2001-06-27
More of the same thrashing, technical metal you'd expect from this band. If you're a fan of Hypocrisy, this title is a must have.
Good start.......2001-03-28
Wanna hear Peter Tagtgren playing drums? Check this out! On the title track he played most of the instruments, and its probably the best track on here. You can really hear the roots of this band, and for a Swedish band they don't have the typical Entombed guitar sound. If you could imagine Floridian death metal being played in a more melodic European fasion, you're on the right track. Pretty cool stuff, even if its "outdated," as some would feel. This is classic!
nightmarish awesome............2000-01-14
this is a excellent hypocrisy album but i have to remark most on the one song title track its so ghoulish sound very awesome instrumentation ..on this the song fluxuates different effects in it...another awesome track to escape is to die has almost a thrash metal feel to it right down to the song nightmare-which is just as it says very nightmarish sound do not pass up pentralia it is early death metal classic they are death metal with almost mixture of some death metal feel use of keyboards not many death bands use them peter tagtgren is very talented individual a god of death metal so to speak .genius to the death metal /dark death metal industry...cya
Great death metal!!.......1999-04-09
I can strongly suggest picking anything up by this band. This is their first cd and although primitive by their standards, this still blows away most other death metal. Nice, melodic, heavy guitars with a growling voice. If you like early entombed, carcass, dismember and stuff like this you will love hypocrisy.

UNDERRATED.......2006-09-29
Many HYPOCRISY fans were disappointed when they changed their style on this album, but what those fans did not realise is that HYPOCRISY have made the best decision possible. They made their music different yet still appealing to true dark music fans, not just death metal fans.
HYPOCRISY produce better music than any black metal or death metal band, and I'm a long fan of both genres, and know the ins and outs of them, or atleast I know what I like.
Maybe this album doesn't sound as perplexing as their more recent releases, but it is the essence of their new ideas and has to be heard even if you think you don't need this album, you're wrong, because it has amazing songs...not super complex songs, but simple yet effective qualities.
A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
An Excellent Metal Album.......2005-10-26
This was the first album I bought by Hypocrisy, and I am pretty damned impressed. Usually metal albums like this-death, melodic death, black-take several listens to grow on me, but I was pretty into this one by the second listen. The Hypocrisy on this album had a lineup consisting of three people: Mikael Hedlund on bass, Lars Szoke on drums, and of course Peter Tagtgren on vocals and guitar, and keyboards as well.
The band, especially Tagtgren, write some great melodic metal songs, and this album is chock full of them. The first real track and album highlight "Rosewell 47" begins with a brooding buildup, and builds upon itself from there. It's a slow paced jammy track that really creates an eerie atmosphere. The next track, "Killing Art", is a much faster one, with many thrash elements. I'd say this album has an even amount of both slow, atmosphering tracks and fast, thrashy tracks, but neither are so much to the point that they get old. In fact, it balances quite well so you don't get too tired of the sound before the album's over.
Tagtgren's vocals are brutal, and consist of everything from screeching to growling to almost whipser-like passages. There's even a some clean singing, as heard in the chorus of "The Arrival of the Demons (Part 2)", and the guy doesn't really have too bad of a clean voice. But his vocals aren't really revolutionary, or even that creative, and they certaintly aren't the best extreme metal vocals I've ever heard, but they don't sound bad at all. He's got a good, clearly audible voice that's clealy mixed into the album.
Tagtren's lyrics on this album are kind of lacking. Like many foreign bands, he sometimes combines English words in the wrong way, forming odd sentences ("They got what to do to hurt"?), but just accept the fact that English isn't the man's native language and he doesn't know any better. But it's not just that; the lyrical matter is sort of silly. "Rosewell 47" is about the supposed alien spaceship crashing in Rosewell that occurred in 1947, which could be an interesting subject, but Tagtren kind of leaves this song filling unfinished. "Abducted" tells the story of, well, abduction of course. But the lyrics come off a amatuerish: "In 1994 / Something else took control / They came to grab me / As I was sleeping in my bed". It's not exactly a horrible line, but it could've been a little more creative and detailed, couldn't it of? But the lyrics aren't that big of a deal, and shouldn't turn off anyone interested in this band, as it's only a small problem.
Tagtren's a very skilled musician, and he shows it in both his speedy and slow guitar playing, as well as his solos. The bass is typical; not very audible and it's usually just following what the guitar's doing. The drums are good, with a fair amount of fills and interesting beats. All in all, the band's solid, and they work together well on this album.
I recommend this album to all fans of In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Soilwork, Children of Bodom, Amorphis, At the Gates, etc. While this may not be the best melodic death metal album ever released as it does have a few minor flaws, it's a very worthwhile listen over all and it should please most fans of the genre.
Promising........2005-03-03
I discovered Hypocrisy when "The Final Chapter" went out and went to the library (yes, it had this record!!!) in order to discover Abducted... It s very hard to review, because "Roswell 47" and "SLippin Away" would no problem be rated 5 starts and the former HAVE to be known by every metal fan.
But the rest of the cd is rather unpersonnal, and doesnt bring much to music.
One of the best Death metal albums I've ever heard........2003-06-10
This is the album that turned me on to the exiting, yet misunderstood genre of Death metal. Before tuning in I thought that Death metal was basically unlistenable noise performed by untalented neanderthals. Not true. This album convinced me that Death metal is performed by talented musicians who can create good atmospheres, rythms, and melodies and is just misunderstood because of the fact that it's more extreme than anything the mainstream has to offer. Having listened to their previous albums and a little of their latter work, I have jumped to the conclusion that this album was basically a mix of their early, brutal style and their melodic side. I personally like the drumming and the guitar work of this album which remains very heavy but smooth at the same time. Peter Tagtgren's blending of Death metal bellows and raspy Black metal vocals works well with the music. Some shocking surprises about this album are portrayed at the end of the album with excellent back-to-back ballads (That's right. A Death metal band performing ballads. It's frightening, isn't it?). This is a Death metal cornerstone and I highly recommend this album to any fan of extreme metal.
Hypocrisy!.......2002-08-16
I have many albums by this band, but I have to say that this one is my favorite. All the songs are great and they leave me feeling good. Anyone who likes metal (and I mean REAL METAL) should get this one. Of course, that is if they don't own it already. Another thing I would recomend getting is the live video called "Hypocrisy Destroys Wacken".

Searching for a modern metal sound.......2007-06-19
I think that part of what makes Hypocrisy such a great band is how well they can blend death, black, thrash, doom, gothic, heavy metal and other influences together to make music that is both unique and experimental. Even back in their earliest days with Penatralia and Osculum Obscenum, they were ahead of their time, brutal but with a futuristic thrashy approach. While their contemporaries Entombed and Unleashed have clung onto their older fans from way back when, Hypocrisy have managed to keep adding to their fan base and have toured with alot of younger groups like Soilwork, Mnemic and In Flames. This has kept the band popular and very successful throughout the 90's and into the 21st century. Hypocrisy have no doubt been a great influence on the whole Gothenburg NEW thrash genre and the album Abducted is an immortalized underground classic.
Sometimes though a talent can become a weakness and on Catch 22 the same independent attitude that gave them fans on Abducted and The Final Chapter began working against them. There was a certain amount of critical backlash towards the inclusion of modern metal riffs, that reminded some of Slipknot, Fear Factory or nu-metal. Its a very mild influence, but I think that alot of metal fans get self-conscious when they feel like they're listening to the wrong type of music. To get an idea of the sound, think of the self-titled album, take out the atmospheric 70's prog vibe and add more modern metal riffs ala Darkane, Mnemic or Strapping Young Lad. I personally admire this bands ability to offer new surprises for each album they release. Where the previous album, Into The Abyss, was pretty much a straight-up death metal album, this one is experimental like the self-titled, only done in a different way. I admit they have had better albums and I'm glad they changed direction afterwards, but this one is really great in its own right with alot of original riffs and great songs like "World of Madness," "Another Dead End," and "All Turns Black." The opening on "Turn the Page" may sound like Slipknot, but to me it doesn't sound much different than the opening to Buried off Abducted. The point is that the band has always been on the cutting edge of death and thrash metal and have had a slight commercial edge so why people are criticizing them now is beyond me. It's still Hypocrisy (or at least post Abducted Hypocrisy), and I think that if you're a true fan of the band you should appreciate this album as I do. Overall, its very anthematic with a touch of rock, gothic, and hardcore. The production and songwriting is tighter than ever, and the vocal overlapping that has become Peter's trademark are very sorrowful and beautiful.
The decision to go in a modern thrash direction probably helped them to compete with what tourmates In Flames and Soilwork were releasing at the time. Its comendable that the group can write original material this good and be so adaptable this late into their career. This new sound worked well on Catch 22 and The Arrival but it was perfected on the excellent Virus album (again reminding me a bit of darkane and Strapping Young Lad).
Another great HYPOCRISY album.......2006-11-01
I've been listening to HYPCRISY for over 10 years, and they never cease to amaze me. Catch 22 is more interesting metal from these Swedes. Every Hypocrisy album is different in style/flavour/tension, and that is what makes them such a great band. I think every cd they released is worth having. Yes maybe some songs may not appeal to certain people depending on taste, but that is what it's all about when it comes to music...personal taste. And Hypocrisy can please almost anyone's taste (assuming they like metal). Hypocrisy used to be straight death metal Before Peter Tagtgren took over as the frontman. I got into Hypocrisy through their 'Osculumn Obscenum' album, and since then have been listening to their music evolve into what I think isn't even really death or black metal, just really raw metal with heavy emotional values much to the likes on Pink Floyd. I think they are one of the only death metal bands that have outgrown themselves.
Anyway, this is a great cd and is worth buying. Just get it, it will grow on you within a day or two and from then on you'll understand the greatness of it.
The skeletons in Hypocrisy's closet.......2006-02-27
How to start... Catch 22 is regarded as the most dramatic sonic exploration in Hypocrisy's dicography. While this may be true, that does not make this album good. Here, Hypocrisy abandons their melodic death roots in favor of a sterile nu-metal sound. They're blatantly trying to sound like Slipknot here, if you listen to the new vocal stylings and the dissonant, downtuned chords. For example, Tagtgren does his best Corey Taylor impression on the hilariously named "Don't judge me." The melodic accessibility present on previous and subsequent Hypocrisy recordings is grossly overpopulated on Catch 22, morphing a majestic yet aggressive band into a myriad of tired structural cliches, and conventional melodies.
Irritatingly enough, Catch 22 is infectiously catchy; So after you realize it's asinine faux-progression, you can't just forget about it or pretend it was never made. These damn songs prance around in your head all day, forcing you to contemplate what evil spirit possessed you to listen to this insipid drudgery in the first place.
Let us observe an iTunes-featured review from All Music Guide, shall we?
"... the disc title says it all: Progress and be called a sellout by cliquish devotees; Write the same album again and again and be called boring, the classic catch 22. Well, this record is also a classic catch 22, even if some fans fall away."
How about this: Release the same record over and over and be called boring. Alienate the fans who brought you to where you are with a banal nu-metal record, and artsy music critics who just got done reviewing the latest Radiohead release will endlessly praise your new musical ventures, despite the deteriorating level of instrumentation and chemistry between band members. Truly a classic Catch 22, eh? Patronize fans of real music by slapping the label "cliquish devotees" on them all you like-- But for once, there's a reason this insipid pawing at mainstream acceptance failed.
Now if you'll excuse me, there are some Disturbed fans in my basement I've yet to take care of.
- Thus says the Pellington
Edit: In retrospect, maybe this review was a bit harsher than necessary. Better too harsh than too lenient, though. Does this album have a few worthwhile moments? Sure. Does that automatically warrant a purchase? No. Just make sure you know what you're getting.
Fans haven't helped Hypocrisy.......2005-05-20
There's a reason why Catch 22 is ranked nearly twice as high in the sales ranks as Hypocrisy's 2004 release "Arrival". But if you listen to the "fans", you'd think this was by far their worst album. Perhaps that's why the title "Catch 22" is so fitting, perhaps Hypocrisy was self-conscious enough to realize they were straying from the norm with this release (in a good way!) and they knew the fans would lash out because of it. A real shame, because this is a masterpiece and truly innovative -- regardles of what the fans might have to say. Hopefully Hypocrisy will come to terms with the fact that they cannot please everyone and start making the music they want to make, I hope their next release tests the boundaries like this album did -- their fanbase will comea round.
Not Excellent, but underrated..........2005-04-08
I read a lots of reviews saying that Hypocrisy sold out with this album, going into nu-metal stuff. I have to say that those people don't know anything about Hypocrisy or nu-metal. None of the nu-metal bands sounds like Hypocrisy does, and I bet Limp Bizkit or Linkin' Park wouldn't write a song as furious, heavy and fast as "Don't judge me" (track 1). Those people are mixing up what means to be nu-metal, and what means to sound modern, that is the keyword in this matter. Peter Tagtgren uses the same recipe with a great result, creating a really verastile album, and sticking to his roots. Nu-metal stuff? Just a couple of arrangements and "Turn the page", that I wouldn't consider nu-metal, and it is catchy and sounds really modern. So, you can't say this album is nu-metal considering one questionable song.
But with songs like "A public puppet", "Turn the page" and "Hatred", Peter takes Hypocrisy one step further, creating new rhythms that fit perfectly in the sound and songwriting of the band, cause he never refused to please himself and continues growing up. The album has a great sound, but the guitars sound better than the previous releases, remindind me "Abducted" or "The Final Chapter". There's the usual Hypo stuff: slow songs, mid tempo and fast songs. There are only 2 fast songs (10 total) in the album. Maybe, it's me, but I prefer more fast songs (the album finishes with two slow songs, sometimes the album needs more energy). Needs 1 or 2 more fast songs to make of this album the prefect combination between brutality and creativity, two things that weren`t combined in the last two albums. You won't find the BEST songs, but they are simple, really "listeneable", with lots of changes of rhythms, well structured, and more important: catchy and not boring. The songs are more in the vein of "Abducted" or "The Final Chapter", than "Hypocrisy" or "Into the abyss". I hope Peter to continue in the right path writing excellent music...(after two years with no new stuff from the studio, 10 songs is not enough...I'm a metal vicious!)
DON'T MISS CATCH 22!!...

Amazing, perhaps their best ever.......2007-01-03
After a string of bad/very weak albums, Hypocrisy has returned with a vengence, producing what could arguably be called their best album. That's right - it's that good.
What surprised me most about this album is how much the band sounded like they did on the Final Chapter and on their self-titled albums: intense, brutal melodicism, the right blend of heavy riffing and tremolo passages, slow and melancholy tracks that balance well with the heavy, fast, aggressive tracks, and an amazing range of vocals by guitarist Peter Tägtgren. The second most surprising thing that struck me about the album is how original, new, and fresh it sounds. What we have is a paradox: on the one hand, this is vintage Hypocrisy; on the other hand, it does not sound recycled or stale in the slightest.
The production on this is really phenomenal, a real contrast to the last 2-3 crappy albums they put out where the production was terrible. Another thing that stands out is the vocal ranger of Tägtgren - he can shriek like Dani Filth or produce a deep guttural growl that sounds like Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth.
To sum up, this album is nothing short of amazing. If you liked the Final Chapter or their self-titled, buy this. If you like quality melodic but brutal death metal from Sweden, buy this.
Hard and Heavy with melody!!! (4.8 stars).......2006-07-03
Hypocrisy hasnt dissappointed me yet. In my opinion "Virus" should be listened to at least once or twice everyday if not more. If you thought that you had heard the extreme sides of Melodic Death Metal...you havent until you've heard this!
This album is great in every aspect. Lyrically, intrumentally, vocally, etc. The only thing that bothered me was the lack of guitar solos and thats the ONLY reason it got a 4.8 from me.
The bottom line is, if you like Melodic Death Metal, and you like your Metal HEAVY and BRUTAL, then BUY THIS ALBUM!
damn, another great album from '05.......2006-05-06
Hypocrisy seems to have hit the peak of their career with 'Virus'. A perfect blend of brutality and melody with the good old Hypocrisy trademark sound. A %100 flawless album for fans of In Flames, At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity, ect.
Brutaful Music To Die To .......2006-04-03
This is a great album. Not one track is skipable, in my book.
"Warpath" is the highlight. The best drumming on any Hypocrisy album is found here.

HYPOCRISY NEVER FAIL !!!.......2006-09-29
HYPOCRISY has slowly become my most listened to band. And this album, even if I haven't listened to as much as any of the other HYPOCRISY CD's I own, is infact an amazing listen. Almost sounds like a pure Black Metal album with high end production usually only used by Death Metal bands, and more Black Metal bands are doing this today (though HYPOCRISY have never really fallen into the pure black metal category, they are more like a perfect mixture of black/death/rock/metal in a Pink Floyd style).
It's quite hard to understand Peter Tagtgren's shrieks on this album (he uses many different styles of vocals aswell on this album).
Amazing blend of styles overall, too hard to put into words, I'd probably need to write a book to explain it all.
JUST BUY IT.

Masters of Diverse Music.......2005-09-18
HYPOCRISY sure have developed in so many ways. When I first listened to this cd I couldn't understand it, I couldn't hear it properly. It sounded wrong to me, but after a few listens I started to pick it up and appreciate it more with every listen. This is almost not even a death metal album. What it is is touches of black metal, trash, and Pink Floyd, yes Pink Floyd. Ever since they did that cover of Pink Floyd's 'Slippin Away' on their 'Abducted' album I think they fell in love with that sound, as did I, aswell as many other HYPOCRISY fans. This is a beautiful album with lots of variation in speeds and emotion. I have been listening to HYPOCRISY ever since I bought my first HYPOCRISY cd 'Osculum Obscenum' back in around '95. They are releasing their new cd 'Virus' on 20th Sep '05, it is available for pre-order here at amazom.com for only $13.99. I can't wait to hear it.
Hypocrisy's Best Thus Far..........2005-01-27
Hypocrisy's self-titled 1999 release was my introduction to the band almost five years ago, and after listening to their entire catalog, easily remains my favorite release by this band.
Fractured Millenium - 5/5 - Probably the greatest opening track of all time. Simply a masterpiece. Mid-paced, great lyrics, great guitar riffs, and a killer bass sound. If you ever have the chance to see these guys live, go see the show and pray that they open with this song. It will be the highlight of your concert-going experiences, I guarantee it.
Apocalyptic Hybrid - 5/5 - Opens with one of Lars Szoke's trademark drum beats and goes into overdrive with Peter grunting and sounding a lot like Masse Broburg. Nice solo, too.
Fusion Programmed Minds - 5/5 - This song reminds me of some of the work on Catch 22, but with better production. Great chorus and guitar work.
Elastic Inverted Visions - 10/5 - Without a doubt my favorite song on the cd. It starts out with a clean guitar riff and then moves into a mid-paced heavy song. Not a weak point in the whole song.
Reversed Reflections - 5/5 - This song sounds much more Gothenburg than the other songs on this cd. Some clean vocals here that sound a lot like Peter's sideproject Pain.
Until the End - 7/5 - Imagine the emotion you get when attending the funeral for a good friend. If you have never had to feel this emotion, listen to this song. The feeling captured in this song is just incredible. It is a slow song, but very heavy.
Paranormal Mysteria - 5/5 - I really love the lead guitar parts in this song. Very nice use of keyboards and vocal harmonies.
Time Warp - 5/5 - No, not the song from Rocky Horror Picture Show. Another fast song. Peter tries something new with the vox on this one. Really cool solo here.
Disconnected Magnetic Corridors - 6/5 - Yet another great song here. Slow, to mid-paced with lots of nice guitar melodies and clean vox. Probably my third favorite after Elastic Inverted Visions and Until the End.
Paled Empty Sphere - 5/5 - Another slow song. Very melancholic feel to this one. It has the feeling of death, but with a sense of defiance. The closing song on the standard release, and a very fitting end to a great album. The lyrics are fantastic.
Selfinflicted Overload (Bonus Track) - 5/5 - This song was a bonus track included on the digipack version of the album. A great song that would have been a bit more at home on Catch 22, but good nevertheless.
Overall, this album is a great addition to any collection and is a great introduction to Hypocrisy. The production is flawless and the cd has some of the strongest songwriting you'll ever hear. A point of interest is that Hypocrisy's next work, Into the Abyss, was originally scheduled to be released with this as a double album.
Best Hypocrisy album, although it is not a Death Metal album.......2004-10-04
Hypocrisy, a Swedish Death Metal, have been around since the early nineties. The album Hypocrisy is one of the best albums from a Death Metal band. Strangely the album is not a real Death Metal album. The only two songs that could be seen as Death Metal songs are "Apocalyptic Hybrid" and "Time Warp." And although these two songs are great, they do not really fit on the album. The other 9 songs range from slow to mid-tempo paced songs. Every song is build around an excellent melodic riff. Compared to previous releases the clean vocals are much more used, but there are still screaming and grunting parts on the album. The album contains more atmospheric keyboards, but they always have a supportive role. I recommend people to listen to this album with headphones at night. Feel the apocalypse arriving.

The best since 1993's Osculum Obscenum.......2007-07-19
Hypocrisy is not your typical death metal band. In some ways they are great, having given us some great "Swedish" Death Metal, and over the years, they have given us some stinkers, such as the horrid "Abducted" or some of the drab "Ballads" (wtf??) they have done. One masterpiece they did, was 1993's Osculum Obscenum. Hardly any filler, no ballads or "experimental" songs, just plain, in your face Death Metal. "Into the Abyss" is another great album. Out of ten tracks, I liked Seven of them, and the seven were all killer cuts. I understand that some like the "experimental" Hypocrisy, but to me, some if it is very repetive, almost to the point where it gets on my nerves. If you dont have "Osculum Obscenum" then pick this up. Its a great effort and a pleasure to hear another "Death" metal album If you want another great effort that is more on the experimental side, then try 2002'2 "Catch 22" Its strays away from their death metal roots, but it is a solid album.
Too many people complaining about nothing !!!.......2006-11-01
Why complain about a Hypocrisy album?! Hypocrisy are about complaining about the state of humanity, not about their music! Besides, their music is the wickedest on Earth. They have variety in their songs and albums, so just shut up and buy this along with every other Hypocrisy cd. Don't forget to buy their older cd's aswell.
HAIL HYPOCRISY (THE BAND, NOT WHAT IT MEANS...BAD JOKE).
Into the Abyss..........2005-01-27
Ok. First off, if you are new to Hypocrisy do not buy this cd first. This is the most hit and miss album these guys have released. Go with Abducted, their self titled album, or the Arrival. There are some great songs on this cd (some of their best, in fact) but also some of their worst.
Legions Descend - 3/5 - A good opener, but nowhere near what Hypocrisy is capable of. It reminds me a bit of Immortal. It's good at first, but then it just seems to drag on and on. Not a good thing when the song is under four minutes.
Blinded - 4/5 - This is much better than the first song. Fast and thrashy with a somewhat epic sounding chorus. Great breakdown as well.
Resurrection - 4/5 - For some reason, I have always liked Hypocrisy's slow songs better than their fast ones. I think they are heavier. This song sounds a lot like The Fourth Dimension, but with ligher vocals and a great chord progression for the chorus.
Unleash the Beast - 5/5 - Now I am starting to hear some of the S/T album. With clean vocals, this song would have easily been at home on any Pain album, but here it sounds like a fantastic cross between Another Dead End for Another Dead Man and Self Inflicted Overload. It has, dare I say, a punk feel to it. Kind of like D.R.I. with a lethal injection of testosterone.
Digital Prophecy - 3/5 - Killing Art no. 10? This song just does not catch my attention. It seems pointless.
Fire in the Sky - 5/5 - In the midst of what is probably Hypocrisy's most mediocre album is one of their greatest songs. Up to this point on the cd, some songs are good, but this is the first that seems really inspired. This is a prime example of what makes this band great.
Total Eclipse - 4/5 - Good God. Killing Art no. 11... Short and sweet, it is a great fast paced song, but Hypocrisy has been here before and done it better.
Unfold the Sorrow - 6/5 - In my opinion the best song on the cd. Just great. Very dark lyrics about a father killing his daughter (at least that is what I gather). Nice guitar solo, and a chorus that will be stuck in your head for months.
Sodomized - 3/5 - What a nice name for a song. Anyway, it is a good fast song, but nothing new. Good breakdown, but the drumming gets a bit repetative.
Deathrow (No Regrets) - 5/5 - Well, they end this album with a great song. This really sounds like the old Hypocrisy material. Very epic and claustraphobic at the same time. Just gotta love it.
I do like this cd quite a bit and if this was any band but Hypocrisy it might even get five stars. But if a band is capable of releasing flawless albums (as they have several times), then they should be held to that standard. Unless, of course, they are experimenting, which here they are not.
Pulverizing!........2001-12-27
For those who have followed Hipocrisy during the past decade, this album marks an (arguably) welcome return to the fast and fierce death metal of their early days. Whether you prefer their wilder early stage, or the moodier sound of their latter recordings, you must admit that "Into the abyss" is a brilliant disc, and, together with their fantastic 1999 eponymous LP, probably their best. True Swedish death metal doesn't get any better than this. On "Into the abyss", Peter Tagtgren and company mantain the momentum from the very first opening lines to the last blistering riff, something Hipocrisy has not been able to achieve in many of their previous full-lengh records. There are plenty of warp speed blasters this time around. Terrific numbers like "Legions descend" and "Total eclipse" fully demonstrate that this band means serious business with this album. There are only two slow tempo numbers on this set, the sinister "Resurrected", and the typical Hipocrisy epical, "Deathrow (no regrets)". Slow they might be, but surely they pack as much menacing crunch as the fast ones. There are no fillers on "Into the abyss". Even the tracks contributed by bass player Michael Hedlund ("Fire in the sky") and drummer Lars Szoke ("Unfold the sorrow") snap. Productionwise, Tagtgren got rid of the excessive treble that has been present in the band's records since 1996's "Abducted", and crafted their best sounding album yet, raw but well defined and perfectly balanced. "Into the abyss" is the second outstanding studio LP Hipocrisy delivers in a row. Let's hope they keep up their muse.
Thank god...Hypocrisy is back!.......2001-04-13
Hypocrisy is back after the selftitled album with a more brutal (almost like the beginning) album. All the fans gathered together in happiness because P.Tagtgren and co. are back(after what can be considered their "softest" album)with what made Hypocrisy a great death metal band in their first releases: fast and brutal songs(like the first two albums; 5 total). We'll find less melodies and less slow-melancholic songs(4 total, which I think they're cool). It was said that Peter Tagtgren's solo project "Pain" made him leave the "underground" scene to a more commercial one, in which he doesn`t feel very comfortable; so he wanted to go back to his "roots"... What made this album not as good as their best is that these dudes focused more in the brutality than in the composition or songwriting; a certain lack of imagination, if you prefer. These "return to brutality" is also showed in the cover and the album title(P.T. has something with "the abyss":his studio, his solo project, also a song). Conclusion: Hypocrisy is back with their brutal approach, but for next album, some "fresher" ideas, besides brutality, would be great.

This is a great buy. The videos are great and the extra demos are awsome. Don't be fooled by Tagtgren's apology for the quality on the demos, they are great songs and are well recorded. This is well worth the price for any metal fan.

Hypocrisy becomes moody - 2.5 stars.......2006-08-23
Penetralia and Osculum Obscenum are two amazing albums. Once you pop in this disc, you might not recognize them. Keyboards start to become a major instrument in Hypocrisy on this album. Its not used on each song, but it is prevalent. I just cant get into this album as much as their previous albums. I actually sold my copy of this album, cause it just doesnt do it for me. There are song good songs, but overall the album just was a disapointment for me.
superb...SUUUPERB......!!!!!!!.......2006-03-18
what an execution... what riffs, what tempo. The man behind it all, peter Tagtgren, the so many times referred to as the mastermind of metal and its genre of death metal!! the f#$% riffs is what kills me im listining to it as i write and man cant get enough words out...oh and the solos, so gracefully created....YOUR MISSIN OUT DAMNIT!!!!BUY It!!!!!!!!
...ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE !!!.......2005-05-29
If you have never heard anything by Hypocrisy, then you don't know what you're missing out on. This in my opinion is their best release, with Osculum Obscenum, and Abducted right along side. Everytime Hypocrisy release a new CD, you are sure to be surprised. This is the album where Hypocrisy start to make their music heavily emotional, which is not really heard on any death metal release before 1994 (in this quality anyway).
This is an epic album, yet it still retains it's underground traits. This is Hypocrisy's big step forward in many aspects, firstly, Peter Tagtgren takes on the role of vocals/guitar, replacing Masse Bromberg (vocals on first 2 albums), Peter used to be on guitars only, now there are only 3 members in the band. Secondly, the structure of the songs, the sound qulity, and imagination put into this album are all improved on this album by 300%. This album has fast tracks, slow melodic tracks, progressive tracks, and each song has something special to make you remember it and hum it when you're not listening to it.
If you want death metal's best, look no further than this CD. This is the BEST! I rate this album 6/5, but the limit is 5/5, that is why the album is called The Fourth Dimension.
I prefer the latter stuff.......2005-05-20
Im not a huge fan of hypocrisy,Its not that i dont like them its just not a band that appealed to me largely.I do own a couple of hypocrisy albums and a bunch of Various tracks(that i picked up on samplers and stuff)but i just find this album slightly boring.Ive never been a fan of slow doom/Death style metal and this album did very little to change my mind.
The songs are too long and slow,The album drags and after about 20 minutes i was just wanting the track to end.Dont get me wrong i love my metal and if its doom/Death you are after It may well be a masterpiece,But if your new to this style of music proceed slowly and with a lot of patience.
Fourth Dimension.......2004-03-04
I just got this CD today, along with The Arrival, They both kill!, If you haven't heard Hypocrisy before Abducted, then beware, this is a bit different, more gutteral growls, anyways, this CD kills, killer vocals, killer riffs, killer drumming, and the production is good, So far I own, Fourth Dimension, Hypocrisy, Into the Abyss, Catch 22, and The Arrival, they all kick A$$, each are different, killer band, my freind got me into them, and I don't regret buying any of they're cds, My favourite tracks, "Apocolypse", "Slaughtered" "The Fourth Dimension" "Mind Corruption", but they all own, I encourage you to buy this if your a fan of the band, or a Death Metal fan.
