Good album,but not for fans of Loudness's early material.......2006-12-14

I have always considered Loudness to be Japan's answer to Dokken and Judas Priest.There is some good material on here,but this album is the most poppy sounding one that they had made at that time."In my dreams" and "rock and roll gypsy" are definite skipover tracks."This Lonely Heart" has a great opening with great guitar riffs,but quickly drops off after that.The rest of the songs are decent but overall,this album will not set your world on fire.I recommend the two previous albums,Lightning Strikes and Thunder in the East if want to hear this band's best American released material,although their best material is on the early eighties Japanese import albums which contain no pop at all and are'nt so grossly overproduced like the later releases.

Had this one on tape when it came out..great music! the tracks "this lonely heart" and "rock n' roll gypsy" are some of the best songs from the 80's I thought, but like always a great band fell in the cracks of the hair bands...

Hurricane Eyes was Loudness' 1987 release after the excellent Thunder in the East (1985) and Lightning Strikes (1986). Loudness was moving toward a more mainstream style of metal and away from their most innovative sound on Disillusion and their Japanese releases. I think `Thunder' and `Lightning' showcased them at their best. They were more accessible albums but kicked! It was the perfect balance. Hurricane Eyes, however, moved more toward the "pop" metal side and it fell flat and, on certain tracks, just plunged straight down. I loved the Thunder and the Lightning, but the Hurricane was a disaster!

Hurricane Eyes has a promising opening with "S.D.I." It is a fast and furious with pounding drums and a memorable opening guitar riff. It has evil-sounding vocals at the bridge. It is a track with a lot of depth. Things start going awry with "This Lonely Heart." It is horrible. The chorus is an example of the worst kind of pop metal. As bad as "This Lonely Heart" is, "Rock `n Roll Gypsy" is doubly worse. It is absolutely embarrassing. It has to be Loudness' worst song ever; at least I hope it is, for I cannot conceive of anything worse. I can barely stand listening to it all the way through so I can write this review. The backing vocals at the chorus are hideous, especially when they elongate the "gooood" with a sickening "goooo" effect. "In My Dreams" is an insipid ballad. The guitar solo in the middle saves it from being another complete disaster. Minoru Niihara has an excellent voice but it is not used well here with forced screeching at the bridge. In fact, his vocals are not used well on most of this album. The ending guitar solo seems overdone for this slower track. "Take Me Home" mercifully ends side one (or the first half of the album for the CD version). It actually has a catchy opening guitar riff, but the chorus is strained. It is a little better than the previous three (that is not saying much), but still a below average metal track.

The second half begins with one of the better tracks here: "Strike of the Sword." It offers a fast, hard-rocking opening and, once the vocals kick in, it surprisingly keeps up the intensity. It is catchy but not the insipid pop kind of catchy. It does have the annoying "oooo" in the vocals at the chorus but is not as distracting here as it is in "Gypsy." "Rock This Way" sports an excellent opening guitar riff but, again, the vocals are annoying. The dark guitar riffs are its saving grace but the lyrics "hey girl..." "baby" and chorus again plunge the track into the bad pop metal abyss. "In This World Beyond" is actually catchy without being too pop. It also has some innovative guitarwork at the beginning. The best track on the album is "Hungry Hunter." It has catchy verses and cool hooks. Hurricane Eyes, however, ends with another disaster; the insipid ballad "So Lonely." It seems like it was meant to be a sequel to "Aires' Lament" off Disillusion. It just doesn't work and, again, the vocals do not sound right on this track. Loudness never seemed to be near their best when they attempted romantic songs.

I am a Loudness fan. Thunder in the East and Lightning Strikes are two of my all-time favorite metal albums. I also like Disillusion. Hurricane Eyes is nothing like those albums. It sounds like a bad pop experiment. Niihara's vocals sound out-of-place and Akira Takasaki's guitar expertise cannot save this album. "Rock `n Roll Gypsy" is an embarrassment. When listening to this album, I can understand why Niihara exited the band, being replaced by an American-born vocalist, and Loudness went into a different direction. Hurricane Eyes was the wrong sound for the band. It is unfortunate because I think they found their niche with the previous two releases.

Hair metal.......2002-08-28

LOUDNESS signed with a major company and immediately sold out, dressing themselves like Dokken, POison, Cinderella, Motley Crue, whatever. Accordingly, the music quality dropped sharply, and they lost whatever chance they have of one day being really great.

HURRICANE EYES is simply awful.

It's sad to see a goo guitar player like Takasaki writing this tons of garbage, pop-metal of the worst kind, not s ingle drop of originality on it. Awful, horrible, disgraceful. When LOUDNESS started a long ago back in Japan, at least they sounded fresh and agressive.

Hurricane Eyes ROCKS!.......2002-07-21

The Japanese Version of this album is excellent. I picked it up for like 10 bucks when I was in Japan, at this book/CD shop called Book Off.
Akira Takasaki's guitar riffs are just awesome! He was like the Japanese answer to Eddie Van Halen in the 80s (although I probably wasn't old enough for that stuff at the time). Plus I like Minoru Niihara's vocals (when they're in Japanese is better). I prefer Minoru over Mike Vescera (I think that's his name), who was the singer on Soldier of Fortune.
I like this better than the English version because I think the lyrics just sounded better when he did them in Japanese.. and the way they flow, especially. The guitar tracks were identical though.
The other thing this has over the other version is song order. I think S.D.I. works great as a last song, not first. And Strike of The Sword is perfect for the first spot. Just an opinion.
