Dooooooooom!! One of the best in years!!.......2007-07-19
Alright, I was skeptical on anything Candlemass would do without their Original Singer Messiah. But this album shows just how great they are without him, I mean, This album has "Come Get Some" written all over it, its very good!I cannot believe Messiah did not want to sing on these songs! i have listened to this band since early 86 and love playing them on guitar and this album totally surprised me!! I listen to it more than any other album released recent. i love Niles new album too but i like this album more!! The vocals are so good and solitude and at the gallows poll are just as good as messiah was. I am so happy they are moving on for their fans and i feel they are a very unselfish band to go on and try so hard for us other than a breakup over differences with their singer. It just happens. But Messiah should see just how great they are without him. Robert is a Dallas boy and so am i so you can see he is more hungry (probably nicer too) and it shows because this is a classic candlemass album. so many defining moments, like "Embracing the styx" what a powerhouse song!! If you ever loved doom metal, This is it. Hands down, anyone who doesnt agree is a liar!. And probably does not play music. This is one of the best albums they ever did! im happy they are moving on , for us the fans! we deserve it and they show it through a hard driving album that should define them for the past and the future, and show the power behind them. You should get this album, you will love it! It has a cool album cover too!! Simple, mean and to the point!
Kings of Doom! Album of The Year.......2007-07-18
Marcolin is gone- and the result is an incredible album! This album blows me away- it's easily the best Candlemass release in years! The self-titled reunion album was something of a disappointment; even though the classic lineup was back, the weird production and lackluster songwriting made for an uninteresting listen. Not so this time! While the songs still do not have the epic grandeur of tunes from 'Nightfall' and other 80s CM albums, the tracks on KotGI have a dark, focused intensity that makes them menacing and memorable in nature. Lowe's vocal performance is easily his best in many years, adding the perfect dark atmospheres to the songs, some of which sound like classic Solitude Aeturnus material (particularly 'Destroyer'). Other tuns are also incredible, such as the majestic 'of stars and smoke', the poundingly heavy 'emperor of the void', and the haunting 'man of shadows'. Honestly, if you're a fan of Doom, this album is for you! Make sure to get a copy with the new versions of 'Mass classics 'solitude' and 'at the gallows end'. While they sound a little different musically, Lowe's vocal treatment of these two classics is just godly. Hail the return of true doom!

Candlemass lives anew!.......2007-07-16
Kings of the Grey Islands marks a new era in Candlemass's ongoing and long running career. Let me begin by saying this CD is heavy! If you thought their previous self-titled release was loud and bombastic then wait until you here Grey Islands. No more moody dronings and slow tempo progression here, the founders of doom have moved beyond the bleak Solitude and become true Emperors of the Void. The song Of Stars And Smoke is without a doubt the best song on this CD and is a true Candlemass classic. The rest of the album is also quite impressive with tracks like Demonia 6 and Embracing the Styx. Also the two bonus tracks on the limited edition, re-recordings of two classic tracks, are simply amazing. Almost as good as the originals I dare say. If you're a Candlemass fan who is looking for something a little more thought out and less repetitive than their self-titled release then Kings of The Grey Islands will be a welcome addition to your collection. If you are just getting into Candlemass then I would recommend Epicus or Tales of Creation as they are a better representation of what Candlemass once was and is known for. Though if you're just looking for some good ol' power doom then you need this album. Bottom line: If you're a longtime fan who's willing to accept a slightly new direction from Candlemass you'll love this album. If you're looking for a true return to the roots you'll be disappointed, hence the only reason I gave the CD four stars. I'd really say four and ½ stars.

the extension that Sabbath wished for...........2006-04-03
Back in the 80's where so many bands gave us amazing music lps. Here we have one of them. This lp marks the beginning of a new style more slow and passionate than heavy-metal,that is doom. Many bands afterwards emerged trying to play like Candlemass or even close but they never managed to get close,because....Because Candlemass simply are the best the founders and the more charismatic of all. They released four marvelous albums(i am talking about their first-four albums)which they all are excellent. All great bands usually have 3 good albums in their carreer,Candlemass exceeded themselves..they made 4 lps and of course the best is this one..Epicus..I will not say anything about the songs or the music..You just make sure to get it..And then you will see for yourselves..Words are never enough..

Back in the 80's, it seemed that metal was dominated by thrash metal acts whose primary selling point was to play as fast as humanly or possible, or horrid hair metal bands of which we will not speak. So when Swedish band Candlemass came out with Epicus Doomicus Metallicus in 1986, with its slow, heavy riffs and overall mood of darkness and despair, it was pretty certain that it would never achieve any sort of mainstream success. And you know, you just have to respect their courage for doing just that.
THIS is Doom Metal. Black Sabbath may have pioneered the style somewhat, but it was Candlemass who developed it into a genre in its own right, and named it as such. Every Doom Metal band today, from Anathema to Katatonia to My Dying Bride; they all descend from this album right here. Opening track "Solitude" is Doom Metal in its purest state: slow, ultra-heavy guitar riffs, and lyrics talking of sorrow and suicide. As a whole, "Epicus" is a long way off from the intense darkness of modern day Doom Metal, but it set in stone the patterns of the genre to follow.
"Epicus" is filled with classic songs and memorable riffs, from the aforementioned "Solitude" to "Demon's Gate" and "Under the Oak." (later re-recorde for their fourth album "Tales of Creation") Truly Leif Edling had a brilliant vision (which would be fully realized on the follow-up "Nightfall"), but "Epicus" is not quite without shortcomings. Session vocalist Johan Lanquist is a tad weak compared to his successor Messiah Marcolin, and sadly, the album itself is quite short. But these are quibbling points. If you have any interest in Doom Metal whatsoever, you need this and "Nightfall" in your collection.
The beginning of true Doom metal.......2005-02-01
Candlemass were the creators of doom metal. Black Sabbath paved the way for Candlemass to be the heaviest band known to man. This is their first record, before Messiah was on vocals. It has the main songwriter and bass player Leif Edling on vocals which is not too much different from Messiah. It did take me a couple times the first time I ever heard Candlemass to get used to the vocals, but now I love the singing style. At first I thought Nightfall was their best record but since I have got the remaster of Epicus I think this is their best record even without Messiahs awesome vocals. And I was so glad to hear that the band is back together with Messiah on vocals with a new album due out in early May. If you are a fan of doom metal, this is one of the best records to have.
Simply put: The birth of DOOM.......2003-10-08
Prior to this album, "doom" did not exist. A few Black Sabbath clones, and even Sabbath itself, are considered pioneers of this art form, but I can present a strong case to the contrary.
Unarguably, Black Sabbath invented what we know as heavy metal. No one before them sounded like they did. However, only a few of their songs could be considered to meet the requirements, musical and lyrical, of "doom"--"Electric Funeral" from Paranoid is a prime example--but as their career progressed, they failed to capitalize on this trend and got stuck in a heavy rock sort of vein. Even when they reinvented themselves in the 80s and regained some heaviness they did not duplicate the dark, evil sounding riffs.
Candlemass does NOT sound like Black Sabbath. Candlemass is the origin of doom metal. Period. A few earlier bands attempted it on a song or two, but Candlemass was the first to perform such a style throughout an entire album and in the process formed their own brand of music: Heavier, darker...They even gave it a name: Epic Doom Metal.
Quite simply, Candlemass is the pioneer of DOOM as a musical religion, and this album is the blueprint for the genre for all time. No one can dispute this.
Every song is a dark lament. Every song is a dirge for forsaken lives and fading hopes. Nothing since has come even close, even the godly Candlemass albums which followed. The line-up on this album did not stay together, which is a shame. The singer is the premier doom vocalist, with his mournful, haunting delivery of Leif Edling's suicide letters and tales of undying despair. His replacement on subsequent albums, while an adequate vocalist, brought an unwelcome element of ham with his operatic histrionics. And the drummer here is outstanding. Check out his fills on "Demon's Gate".
Epicus Doomicus Metallicus to this day remains unchallenged in its position of DOOM supremacy. Even Candlemass themselves could not have topped this. Other albums are called "the best doom metal blah blah blah...". Uh-uh. Those are sales pitches. This is the real thing.

One of the great Doom albums.......2004-08-04
Up until a few months ago, I had only heard the first 4 Candlemass albums. I have been a Candlemass fan for a long time, but for some reason I just never got the time (or the interest) to check their other stuff out, what a fool I was.
Track after track, my jaw dropped a bit lower and I immediatly called all my metalhead friends to tell them about this album.
I was skeptical at first, I thought to myself how could Candlemass be cool without Messiah Marcolin at the voice?? But the singer on this album truly stands in and delivers an amazing performance. The album is obviously influenced by the great Black Sabbath, but they do add their own little mix to make it a perfect doom album. Tracks like "Droid", "Tot","Blumma apt" and my personal favorite "Galatea" are like traveling on a space ship. Seeing the planet from far above, on a cosmic journey through time and space.
This album should be purchased to experience the brilliance of these songs, no matter what music you are into. Get this album or miss out on Candlemass best kept secret.
Depends on what you're looking for...........2002-04-02
Candlemass this isn't, not the Candlemass I know, but it's still really good. It's just more like it's another band instead of Candlemass, it's that different. Very Black Sabbath-y, and definitely worth getting, just don't expect it to sound like the old Candlemass.
Candlemass is back again.......2000-07-24
Back, yet not back... This isn't the Candlemass we all learned to love during the late 80's. Leif Edling has composed this entire album as a salute to Black Sabbath, and, doing so, somewhat abandoned his old style. Since earlier album Dactylis Glomerata was really just an "Abstract Algebra 2", we can safely say that there has not really been any new CM releases since Chapter VI. This album begins just fine with killer-rockers Droid and Elephant Star, but what follows is too slow, too even-paced, too timid. The way I remember it, old Sabbath never sounded so placid. Fair enough, singer Björn Flodqvist does a great impersonation of Ozzy Osbourne, but it isn't enough to fill out an entire album. Also, the songs are full of noises and sound effects that might be cool, but which I think sound more like old Star Trek phasers. The reason for three stars is mostly the aforementioned songs Droid nd Elephant Star. The rest of the album is, sorry to say, not good enough, knowing what Edling can do. Perhaps he should stay on as a DJ and festival reporter for Swedish radio P3.

Good Album......but.......2007-04-18
I bought this album after reading what people had to say about it, but while i was wating for it to arrive, i bought TALES OF CREATION. Now that i have both i think i prefer TALES. I think the production is a little better and the songs on TALES are a little more catchier. WARNING!!!! DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THE SELLER, 'IMPORT_CD'S' !! I ordered this cd from them on March 26th and i still don't have it! They took my payment that day and i live 30 min from them! I bought it (again) at my local record store. So i would recomend only purchase it through Amazon.
One of the Best Ever Metal Albums.......2007-03-10
Having bought this album back in 88, i can still say that, 19 years later, its is simply one of the greatest metal albums ever put together. Just buy and listen. Nothing more needs to be said.
Classic Doom Metal.......2005-02-01
With their second release it has Messiah Marcolin on vocals instead of bass player/songwriter Leif Edling. This is Candlemass best lineup. With Leif Edlings great songwriting and messiahs opera style vocals, this is the second best Candlemass record behind Epicus. My fav songs are
The Well of Souls
At the Gallows End
Samarithan
Bewitched: One of the best metal riffs ever
Nightfall isOne of the best doom metal records, past, present and future.
There STILL is nothing heavier.......2003-10-08
Leif Edling, undisputed father of DOOM, takes his funereal elegies of torment and despair to another level with this sophomore release from Candlemass. This album could not have topped its predecessor no matter what. Instead, Leif evolves his musical creation and adds some faster tempos to the mix, thereby expanding the boundaries of DOOM.
The song titles should paint this album's feel quite well. Gothic Stone is just some weird sound effect which only lasts a few seconds before "Well of Souls" kicks in and launches this musical hearse into the abyss. "Well" is a little faster than what we're used to hearing from them at this point, but no less doomy, and really sets the whole tone of the album: heavier and faster. The guitar tone is more refined, unbelievably heavier than before, and ear splitting. New singer Messiah Marcolin hits the notes as he should and has a great voice, but seems a little overwrought in places. New lead guitarist Lars Johanson adds a shred factor which the band had not had before, and is more than welcome.
Leif's lyrics really shine on this release, specifically on the demands-your-attention tales on "At the Gallow's End" and "Samarithan", and "Mourner's Lament" tragically defines the feelings of loss upon the death of a loved one.
"Bewitched" I believe to be the strongest song among this batch of classics--no easy feat--with its undeniably classic driving doom riffs and catchy chorus.
The Bonus Disc also holds a rare gem: "Battlecry". How this did not progress beyond demo form I cannot guess. Fortunately for us, Leif's demos are always of such good quality that they could easily pass as properly produced recordings. This song is the definition of "lost classic", and again fast paced doom weaving a tale of Crusaders in battle.
I can completely understand how this recording can be widely acknowledged as the band's best. While I don't agree with that assessment entirely, I fully recommend it as a companion piece to Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. Those two albums show the Master Leif Edling as he creates and redefines his own musical genre.
doom and gloom.......2003-01-15
This album sounds like it was written in the 50s.... 1050s! Indeed, there is a musty dark ages vibe on Epicus. Possibly the gothic imagery or oppressive stone henge sized riffs? Or the morbid acoustic overdubs? Ah, 'tis all of them. I don't like Candlemass's funeral procession of a debut as much as it's followup, Nightfall, but there is some good metal on display here.
First track Solitude is rather somber... the vocalist here is nasal and not as cool as Messiah Marcolin (the robe man... the robe). I like his voice anyhow, and he wines and moans like a man possessed. Every now and then Candlemass bust out the crucial riffs... this is no more apparent than Black Stone Wielder... HOLY SHOES that is a monster. Under the Oak has some full on parts, but Epicus is really slow, almost to the point of drudgery. Still, slow can be good, and Candlemass are good.
The only dud is Demons Gate, which begs for the skip button. And the skip button it gets. Crystal Ball is really catchy and has some neat riffs. Not exactly anything phenomenal but I was impressed and it takes more than suck to impress me.
This CD is the basis for doom metal, a fairly small and overlooked tributary. These guys are the masters and all should pay heed, so grab your hymnal, holy water, and join the wake!

Classic Doom.......2007-05-19
I'm not a huge fan of the doom metal genre. For the most part I prefer music that is more melodic and upbeat. Still, there are times when only something unrelentingly heavy will do, and that's where a band like Candlemass fits the bill perfectly.
Candlemass's 1989 album Tales of Creation is the band's fourth studio album, and was the final album to feature titanic vocalist Messiah Marcolin - at least until their short-lived reunion and self-titled release a couple years ago. Tales of Creation is an album that carries on in the same lumbering mammoth doom metal vein as previous albums Ancient Dreams and Nightfall, but the band's sound is a bit more refined. Musically, vocally, and production-wise, Candlemass is in top form here. There aren't any instantly memorable songs like "Bearer of Pain" or "Bewitched", but the album as a whole tends to work quite well. The album also seems somewhat more fast-paced than previous efforts, with some almost thrashing riffs and a very flashy instrumental track called "Into the Unfathomed Tower" that, title aside, probably leans more toward power metal than doom.
Tales of Creation is arguably the last truly great Candlemass album, and remains a must-have for doom metal aficionados.

Plods along like a dinosaur.......2007-05-12
This CD starts out good with the song "Black Dwarf". A cool riff and a fast pace. Everything after that is boring. Dull, blunted riffs and meandering song structure. The singer has a weak voice but tries to sing in a bombastic style so every word sounds like a strain. "Candlemass" plods along like a dinosaur until it just runs out of energy and is over. The production is ok and musically the playing isn't bad. Everyone just sounds tired and like they didn't really care. A big disappointment.
great record.......2006-08-07
This is the first Candlemass CD I purchased and was surprised by how much I liked it. It's refreshing to hear metal without blastbeats (not that I don't like that also) and great vocals. When most metal bands are only concerned with how "extreme" they sound it's a great change of pace to listen to something more "Sabbathy" and traditional sounding. This is a must own CD and since buying this one I've purchased their other ones as well.
As good as their classics. A crushing doom metal album!.......2006-05-21
Well, I must admit, this album has taken me by surprise in a big way. Yes I am a fan of the band's earlier works such as "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" and "Nightfall", but I kind of assumed for some reason that these guys were over the hill, rejoining solely to put out some half baked album in an attempt to make a buck or two. Never did I think that "Candlemass" would be such an epic slab of powerfully effective doom metal. How wrong I was!
For those of you that don't know what Candlemass is all about, think of what a heavier, much more metal Black Sabbath would sound like with a soprano singer that still manages to sound like Ozzy. But that comparison might make you think that Candlemass are no longer relevant and stuck in the past. One listen to the reformed band and you won't think that. These guys have managed the near impossible. They've released an album that not only sounds like classic Candlemass, but also manages to sound modern and crushing at the same time.
The production is sensational and I'm certain the band have never had a more appropriate sound. There's much more of a lower end to things than on previous releases which suits their form of doom perfectly. Turn this baby up and feel the power of each and every riff, while Messiah adds his recognizable soaring vocals to proceedings.
Highlights for me are the slower tracks such as "Seven Silver Keys" and closer "The Day and the Night", along with "Copernicus", but there are no bad tracks or fillers to be found here.
I know I jumped on the Candlemass bandwagon a long time after they were in their prime. After all, I purchased their major albums only about 2 years ago. But I truly think this is on par with anything they've ever done, which far surpasses my expectations, and will most likely hold a place in my top 10 albums of the year. If you're a fan, be excited. If your not, you soon will be.
Powerfully Heavy and Thought Provoking........2006-02-14
If you've ever listened to Candlemass, this will seem like a different band in the terms of lyrics. Musically, it's heavier than ever, like Black Sabbath on monsterous steroids.
Unlike the cover, the music inside here is very complex, especially in the lyrical department. The lyrics are highly intelligent, and sometimes hard to understand the meaning of.Messiah Marcolin still sounds like a cross between a tenor and a giant, his vocal powers are unlike anything ever heard before, with extensive vibratto melodies.
Musically speaking, it's purely heavy Black Sabbath-esque riffs with relentless drum beats and bellowing bass drives. The production qualities here are some of the best I've ever heard, it's clear, clean, and heavy as hell. This is my only Candlemass album, but I've heard many songs from their catalog, and this is not like anything they've ever done, which could be good for some people and bad for some. Instead of focusing on the evil and dark death inspired themes of their previous works, this album deals with the dark and strange side of the human's pyschological mechanics. All in all, this is a solid album, and a shining example of how great European metal still is.
Hmm.. not the Candlemass I was expecting..........2005-11-07
Candlemass is one of my favorite doom metal bands, with dark doomy lyrics that makes you want to cut yourself.. I've been waiting a long time for Candlemass to put out a new album.
After purchasing and listening to it with high hopes, I was very disappointed. I'd have to completly agree with the other dude that rated this CD with 3 stars b/c it REALLY WAS NOT the Candlemass i was expecting. If you were looking for doomy lyrics like Epicus Doomicus Metallicus / Tales of Creation you'll be very disappointed. I felt that they have lost their doomy edge and have become another generic washed up band. A lot of the songs on this album sounds like they tried to bite off their past CD's with failure. I also think that Candlemass has run out of ideas and put out this album for the sake of putting something new out.
I'm crossing my fingers for the next album to be a killer one!!

Their finest........2006-02-27
This is the best album that Candlemass has ever produced. It doesn't have any classics such as "Ancient Dreams, At the Gallows End," or "Mirror Mirror" but there is so much power and emotion on this album. Messiah is at his best, the riffs are darker and heavier than ever and the production value is top notch. You still have the epic drums and crushing guitars accompanies by the piercing solos. Lyrically this is a great album as well.
Overall this is the best this band has ever produced (in one man's opinion). The album flows well and is the only album where I can listen from start to finish and be equally amazed. I think the album "Ancient Dreams" is their second best so if you are a fan of any of Candlemass's earlier works, this will make a nice addition.
Also, give their new album a few spins. It has a tendancy to grow on you.
Candlemass.......2003-08-26
Candlemass is so corny that it works just perfectly. Dark mystical lyrics accompanied by sledgehammer guitar and thundering drums coalesce into a satanic dirge not to be outdone. Classic opera styled singing sounds evil, is evil!
Sweet Swedish Metal!.......2003-08-20
Heavy guitar sounds and an operatic voice...
Unique blend that mixes so perfectly!

3.5 out of 5 stars.......2005-02-01
This record is a bit of a disappointment. After their popular Nightfall record, the record label they were on made them rush another record out to try and capitalize on the bands new popularity. So they had to rush production to get this out and it is my least fav Candlemass record. It is still a decent effort, but not as good as their first two or Tales of Creation. But it is still better than anything they put out after messiah left the band. True Candlemass fans should get this but if you are new to them get Epicus or Nightfall first.
What was this supposed to be????.......2004-02-27
I picked this disc up back in 88 or 89 and just recently pulled it out again, because I couldn't ever remember listening to it. Now I know why it sat on my shelf so long! If you are a fan of competitive guitar riffs, or find yourself needing an album where every song sounds identical, or haven't heard an album featuring a warbling, screaming cow on vocals in awhile, then by all means pick this up. I enjoy the darker side of metal as well as the next guy, King Diamond anyone? But come on! There is nothing redeeming about this disc at all, except for the Sabbath Medley. Which only served the purpose of getting me to pull out the original Sabbath discs again, to hear the songs done well. I see Candlemass refered to as "Doom" metal. I am not sure what that is supposed to mean...unless "Doom" means laughing at the silly vocals. But I think "Doom" in this case was the forcast of where this band's career was headed.
A Doom Metal classic in every respect.......2003-09-06
Candlemass are without a doubt one of the most important doom metal bands in the world. Ever since their incredible debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus they've gone a long way paving the way for other bands. They're among the founders of modern doom metal and while I enjoy each and every Candlemass record I consider the first 4 absolutely essential.
Ancient Dreams is the second album with doom metal vocal god Messiah Marcolin and the third Candlemass album. It picks up where the classic Nightfall left off. Leif Edling's songwriting and bass playing is at its best and Marcolin's voice is simply incredible. The guitar solos are brilliant. It is hard to believe this was released back in 1988 when almost everyone was into glam, hard rock or thrash metal. I appreciate and respect Candlemass for their courage to stand up for themselves and make the music they believed in even though they knew it would never sell millions. That is why they have lasted all these years and are considered fathers of doom. They always remained true to their roots be it with Marcolin, Vikstrom or Flodkvist. My personal favourites off this record are "Cry from the Crypt", "Darkness In Paradise", the title song, and "Bells of Acheron". There's not a single filler on Ancient Dreams though.
You might also want to check out Memory Garden, Solitude Aeturnus, Abstrakt Algebra and some other bands.
Bittersweet Dreams.......2003-04-19
Aaahhhhh... the bittersweet smell of death. This album introduced me to those guys, IMHO, the best swedish band ever, back in '91. I can clearly recall my first impressions when I first heard Mirror Mirror, Epistle No.81, and the really spooky Darkness in Paradise, IMO, the greatest highlight in this gothic masterpiece. They had a lot of trouble during the making of this album, which included the loss of their former producer, which didn't prevent them from producing a classic, however.
