4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2006-08-28

The music is beautiful and very impressive.
The lack of a consequent booklet is therefore even more damageable.
This is why the fifth star falls down.

5 out of 5 stars so true.......2002-09-13

next best thing to standing on a street corner as they pass by

3 out of 5 stars Lawdy This Is Good Music!.......2002-05-13

What can match the experience of sitting down at the Cafe du Monde to a plate of beingets lightly dusted with white powdered sugar and a cup of black, black coffee made with chicory?

New Orleans is a state of mind. And, part of that experience is honest to goodness, get down Dixie Land jazz.

This is a wonderful cd that brings a bit of New Orleans along with it.

There is only one small criticism. Between songs there is a narrator who explains the different parts of a jazz funeral. The description would have been better written on the cover.

But that is a minimal criticism. The music is wonderful. It makes feet tap. It plants tunes in the brain that the listner will hum for many days.

The Dixie Land jazz on this cd is loaded higher than a muffelleta. And the music isn't fattening!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Dixieland Jazz Funeral........1999-12-31

The soulful narration of Milton Batiste combines with the unique style of the Magnificent Seventh's Brass Band to provide the listener with a very enjoyable first-hand account of a typical New Orleans jazz funeral. While a couple of the songs drag on a little longer than perhaps they should, this 70+ minute CD ended before I was ready for it to. It contains an excellent rendition of Just a Closer Walk With Thee in a funeral-dirge style. I would highly recommend this CD to any fan of dixieland music!

5 out of 5 stars You want an album of NoLa Funeral? This is the one!.......1998-09-04

Of all the brass bands, even the old ones by the "original cats", this collection compares favorably. This is one of the rare occasions where you say the band is both loose and tight. (That is a good thing, my friend).

It has three parts, "Wake Service (Gospel)", "Funeral Procession (Dirge)", and "Joyous Send Off (Second Line)".

So you got it all.

5 out of 5 stars What a great find!!.......2006-03-02

Never heard of these guys but apparently they were pretty popular years ago, in Scotland. I found out about them on the Fish (Marillion) list. Reminds me alot of Whitesnake when they were in their heyday. After the first listen, I had to go back and listen to it again. Bugs me that I never heard of them until now.

5 out of 5 stars A THUNDERous review.......2005-06-12

Thunder is one of the best rock acts out there. The music has a good feel to it, and its a shame they don't have a record deal in the US (to answer the question in another review.) They are not heavy heavy, and I've loved their music since I heard their debut album. If you have the money to do it, you should get their previous albums.

5 out of 5 stars The best band you never herd of.......2005-05-24

This is just great rock & roll,in fact this band dose not have a bad record, why they are not known in the usa is beyond me. Their are a lot of people that are realy missing something great. Do yourself a favor and check out this band, you will see what I mean. Hugh, Bangor PA

5 out of 5 stars Every song is a winner.......2005-03-28

The Good
"I Love You More Than Rock and Roll" is awash with an infectious riff and Bowes' consummate rock vocals. The track starts off slow but another element is added with each new verse. "The Gods of Love" uses some cosmic sound effects to get things going, but that's followed by some crunchy guitar riffs. The catchy chorus and high-powered vocals are sure to draw you in. "I'm Dreaming Again" is an emotionally powerful acoustic ballad. The musical background is a combination of single note picking and chords. The solo is just as moving.

"Amy's on the Run" will have you scratching you head. At first I thought it was about a woman running away to a new life, but after a few listens I realized...she's running away from being a woman! Yep, she's a guy now. It's such an anthemic song for having such a weird theme. Bowes' tuneful and heartfelt lyrics take center stage on the acoustic/electric power ballad "Together or Apart".

Three, count `em three 80s rock clichés appear on this release. All three are titled after a known idiom. Despite it's silly title, "Monkey See, Monkey Do" had an impact on me. Maybe it was the hypnotic riff or gritty and soulful vocals that did the trick. I'm actually singing it in my head right now. "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down" has a bluesy lick similar to Great White's "Once Bitten" with a little driving piano thrown in for good measure. "One Foot in the Grave" keeps the bluesy groove going with a beefy riffs and a power chord conclusion.

The Bad
You probably haven't heard of them before.

The Verdict
Every song is a winner on The Magnificent Seventh. I would say that Thunder sounds like a bluesy-er version of 38 Special. It baffles me that I've never heard of them before.
