4 out of 5 stars Glad Roadrunner Remastered this album.......2006-02-24

Title basically said it all, this album deserved it. It's not FF's best in my opinion but I was blown away this first time I heard it. I actually saw them live with Sepultura and Fudge Tunnel before I heard the album and I was hooked because I haven't heard anything like it at the time. This was one of the many albums that are on my list that should be remastered with today's production abilities. Definately worth picking up even if you already own the originals.

5 out of 5 stars Very glad I bought the remaster.......2005-05-16

This album simply sounds heavier and more clear than before. This is one of the metal classics of the 90's and I absolutely love what Roadrunner has done with it, even if they just want money. The drumming is more clear than before, the clean vocals in the background section of "Leechmaster" are more audible, the instruments are more distinguishable from each other.

I also bought it for the "Fear is the Mindkiller" EP which I had been wanting for a long time. It's satisfying and the remixes of "Scumgrief" and "Scapegoat" KICK ASS.

All in all I'd say it's worth your money if you lack either of the CDs contained herein. I'd probably give the package 4 stars, as it's not worth it if you have both already, but I love SoaNM too much to give it less than 5.

5 out of 5 stars In the beginning..........2005-02-04

In 1992, Roadrunner Records released the major label debut of a little known quartet called Fear Factory was released. Produced by famed death metal producer Colin Richardson (who produced Machine Head's classic debut "Burn My Eyes"), "Soul of a New Machine" not only introduced Fear Factory to the world, but helped usher in a new era in the metal genre, for better or worse. Combining the low end assault of death metal, some industrial rhythms, and some grindcore elements to boot, "Soul of a New Machine" isn't Fear Factory's finest hour (that belongs to "Demanufacture"), but songs like "Martyr", "Scapegoat", and "Scumgrief" were only a taste of things to come from the band. Arguably one of the best debut metal albums to come out of Los Angeles, "Soul of a New Machine" is here, repackaged with the "Fear is the Mindkiller" EP as a bonus disc, and if your getting into the band and don't already own "Soul of a New Machine", then you should definitely pick this up.

4 out of 5 stars no better way to anger my parents.......2004-10-31

Hey kids! Looking for something heavier and more unique than the average death metal crap? Are you also looking to make your parents angry? Look no further than the remastered edition of Soul of a New Machine! All fake advertisements aside, this cd is great. The fact that it comes with the Fear is the Mindkiller EP gives it even more points on the goodness scale. This cd offers up some of the greatest death metal I've heard in all my years of angering my parents with loud music. I won't say it sounds better than the original, as I've never heard it, and therefore can't compare the two. However, I will say that this cd is truly awesome. Although Burton C. Bell's melodic vocals are heard on every FF cd, the contrast between vocal styles in this cd really gives emphasis to Burton's singing voice. Several people say that their cd Concrete is better than this, and you may agree with them, but this cd is a completely different machine than Concrete. However, both albums are awesome death metal records, and I recommend them both to any devoted FF listener. Word of caution: if you didn't start getting into to Fear Factory until you heard Archetype, don't even bother looking here, you've got to be a real fan to like this. ::cough cough:: MOM! ::cough cough::

4 out of 5 stars Throw away your old copy.......2004-10-26

I was stoked to find out that Fear Factory was releasing a remastered version of Soul of a New Machine. Production values have gotten so much better over the last decade and now this album has been given its due. I don't know if Raymond re-recorded some of the double kick, but now it has the same intense pulse of all their other albums. Raymond is far and away the most talented double kick drummer out there. While some may be faster, none can do the crazy beats and sick tempos quite like Raymond. And as good as FF is on cd, IMO they trail only Slayer as the greatest live metal act out there today.....

5 out of 5 stars Buy Soul of the Machine .......2004-08-19

This is the best Windham Hill sampler and nothing like the "heralded" but really laid back "Winter's/Summer's Solstice" releases by Paul Winter, one of Windham Hill's premier artists of the 80s. While SOTM is classified as "electronic" music, it has oriental and jazz inspirations throughout.

I have loved this release since the 80s. When my tape started to wear out, I copied it and bought the CD. But every Soul of the Machine CD that I buy seems to disappear into thin air, just like that other reviewer has experienced. Hmmm, my friends DO love this release ... .

Listen to this by the pool or while sitting on the patio in the evening. It is relaxing and, even after nearly 15 years, it is still one of my favorite CDs. If you like Arkenstone, Aura and Grusin (Dave or Don), you won't be disappointed. It will grow on you, too, and become your favorite CD in no time flat.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2004-04-30

I used to own two copies of this CD and they both have disappeared because once people hear it, they steal it. This is simply one of the best CDs available in the new age/electronic genre. One of the top CDs in my 'desert island' collection.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful-Calming.......2003-08-01

This sampler of Windham Hill artists is beautiful and very calming. It is fine as background music, but really it deserves to be listened to over headphones in an enviornment where you can give the music your attention. I usually listen to hardcore punk or metal. This is an album I listen to when I want to slowly relax all of the muscles in my body. This music verges on the spiritual, and I recommend it for anyone who is getting fed up with all of the stress our lives generates.

5 out of 5 stars What A Surprising Start!.......2006-10-21

Fear Factory has always been a band in my book of respect. They cannot be pigeon-holed into a genre and can blend many styles of music into perfection. "Soul Of A New Machine" is an album that has the band back in their more raw death metal oriented days. "Martyr", the beginning track, is a great choice to kick this CD off, with a crushing death groove to it along with Burton C. Bell's amazing vocals. Also, the band incorporates industrial in their music as well, especially in tracks like "Self Immolation" and "Crisis". There really isn't much more to say about this great album, other than that it is diverse, worth the listen, and a standout to most music out there today. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Apex.......2006-07-18

This, FF's first official release, showcases a very different sound from the subsequent ones. My personal favorite, this disc has consistently brutal dirges of heavy vocals and equally intense assaults on the instrumental front. But the shining moments arise with the sparing use of clean sounds:
Martyr - The quiet chords behind the verses and the childlike vocal droning in the bridge are the fundamental components of the song.
Scapegoat - Riff and vocals harmonize beautifully.
Scumgrief - Chorus composed of bone-chilling guitar and vocal lines.
Suffer Age, Escape Confusion - Intros of both songs build huge suspense and tension.
Dino Cazares truly shows his skill at making memorable riffs from only a few dissonant power chords, something that became somewhat drowned in the flood of electronic experimentality that followed. Also, Bell's vocals are very intense and straightforward, unlike the retarded sounds found in later tunes like "Shock" and "Contagion". This album fails to age, and if this type of music is within your frequency, it is a disc that you will find to be listenable at any time.

5 out of 5 stars Darker and heavier than "Demanufacture".......2006-05-15

This cd's Fear Factory death-indust metal side. The song's lyrics are depressing and the music was dark, but very awesome. The synthesizer sounds are gloomy, and sometimes scary, but impressive.Guitar riffs are good, drums not bad,in a few songs too simple, but it isn't a big dissapointing thing. The vocals are heavy...Burton's not a Corpsegrinder (Cannibal Corpse) but he's voices are good, and the singing is very clean. My 3 favourite songs int this cd : Crisis,Big God-raped souls, and Self Immolation ."Soul of a New Machine" isn't an other "Demanufacture",but talented and original album.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Fear Factory Album.......2005-11-22

NOTE!: This isn't the radio friendly rapping Fear Factory. This is FF as a death metal/industrial beast. The album starts off with the kick a$$ 'Martyr' and things pick up. It's followed by the ok 'Leechmaster' but the follow up to 'Leechmaster', 'Scape Goat', could very well be the heaviest song on the album. Then it's followed by my favorite song on the album, 'Crisis'. In the middle of the song we hear samples of 'Full Metal Jacket', over bass. The results are pretty chiling. Next, 'Crashtest', starts off with some weird sampling. It ends with the sound of a guy screaming directly into a microphone or something. The next few song that kicka$$ on the album are 'Lifeblind', 'Scumgrief', 'Big God Raped Souls', and 'Escape Confusion'. 'Confusion', the begining is very chiling. It begins with Dino's guitar giving the riff and Burton growling lowly "Escape........Con.....fusion..".

In short, get this album. It was released on Roadrunner Records in the early 90's, the same label that offered Machine Head's "Burn My Eyes", Sepultura's "Chaos A.D.", Biohazard's "Urban Disicpline", and for something different, Type O Negative's "Bloody Kisses". If you enjoyed those albums, then check this out. BTW: I'M REALLY 14

5 out of 5 stars If you thought "Demanufacture" was heavy..........2005-10-31

The follow up to this album, 1995's "Demanufacture," was very heavy, but it wasn't an unabashed, full speed ahead death metal album, like this one. Maybe Fear Factory were struggling to find a sound of their own, or maybe they wanted to make their first album a death metal album so they could show their evolution as a band. Whatever the case, those who are new to Fear Factory will probably find it hard to believe that the same band that made a C.D. like "Digimortal" also made "Soul of a New Machine" (and "Concrete"). Yes, they actually were (at one time) this heavy! This C.D. has nothing but pounding riffs, blinding drums, and very mean (almost monstrous) vocals.

Some songs (i.e. the multi-speed "Scapegoat" and "Scumgrief") feature clean, backing vocals, but most of this album is skull crushing. "Martyr" builds from whispering/growling to bellowing; tracks like "Crash Test" and "Lifeblind" have fast, pounding riffs and heavy, thumping drums, whereas "Flesh Hold" is so thrashy, it could pass for an old-school Sepultura song. "Big God/Raped Souls" and "Arise Above Oppression" are short, explosive blasts, "Leechmaster" and "Suffer Age" show case Raymond's great drum work with lightning fast blast beats, and, finally, "Manipulation" has buzzsaw guitars and drums.

Their debut may not be a good place to start if you're new to Fear Factory (because it's not a good representation of the band), but it shows they have really come a long ways in just over a decade. And if you don't enjoy Fear Factory's later works, like "Digimortal" and "Transgression," (or if you think "Demanufacture" is their best album,) you should definitely check into "Soul of a New Machine."Also recommended to fans '80's Sepultura, Deicide, and the like.

This package is stuffed with top-line artists, and whoever chose the tracks knew what they were doing. With this kind of sprawl to deal with, track selection is like haiku: difficult, but evocative when done artfully. Radiohead does "Fake Plastic Trees," Rancid does Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come," Patti Smith gets "About a Boy," and the Beasties weigh in with "Root Down." And on and on the list goes, from Sonic Youth to Taj Mahal. Maybe you don't think you want a no-commitment introduction to Tibetan music. Actually, you do--and there's some here. A huge record of a huge show. Comes recommended. --Gavin McNett

5 out of 5 stars The best way to remember this concert...........2002-07-24

The Tibetan Freedom Concert in 1996 when shown on MTV changed my life forever when I discovered what was going on in Tibet. And when I got my first glimpse into Buddhist culture. This CD goes over 2 years of the Tibetan Freedom Concert. It is the first 2 that were held in 1996 and then in 1997.

The CD is not just a youth approach to doing something for the Buddhist nation of Tibet, it's a celebration of Tibetan Culture. Many artists from Tibet appear along with bands like Rancid and The Beastie Boys on this CD. There are also chants from Buddhist monks. Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam play an acoustic version of "Yellow Ledbetter" that makes this CD well worth the money you paid for it. There is also a track that appears only on this CD from Rancid titled "The Harder They Come"

Beck appears on the 3rd CD with "..." and De La Soul plays a very energetic version of "Me, Myself & I" The 3rd CD is also an enhanced CD for your PC that you will be very inspired by. It comes with a collection of information on what it is that you can do for Tibet and a Quicktime library of video files showing The Beastie Boys, Radiohead, Ben Harper, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and some very special messages from His Holiness The Dalai Lama. As well as a short video of Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys explaining how he got involved. This CD is truly a great way to remember these concerts. If you buy this CD, you not only get music, but a celebration of Tibet's spirit and culture celebrated through 2 years of concerts.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2002-07-04

This triple album, unless you want to support the freedom of the Tibet, is not really worth buying. For a three disc set, it only has as much as one disc's worth of acceptable good music, which you probably can get on iTunes individually.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......1999-07-28

Rancid's version of "The Harder They Come" rocks. The rest is just as good.

4 out of 5 stars Great live songs from established acts, newbies, Tibetans.......1999-04-11

This three cd collection exhibits the talent of many big-time established artists, such as U2, A Tribe Called Quest, Noel Gallagher, Foo Fighters, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Beastie Boys, Alanis Morisette, Beck, the Fugees and Rage Against the Machine. It also shows off some up and coming artists, like the John Spencer Blue Explosion, Taj Mahal and the Phantom Blues Band, and Pavement. There're hits, like RATM's Bulls on Parade and Beasties' Root Down, but it's dominated by lesser known, non-single, songs. Beck's folky Asshole and Blur's answer to Oasis, Beetlebum. The cd is spiced with a share of traditional Tibetan chants and music, so you won't forget why this album was made. As MCA Adam Yauch says at the end of Root Down, "Let's not forget why we're all here. To help the people of Tibet get their freedom."

4 out of 5 stars how the cause saves the case.......1998-08-19

Tibetan issue is of big importance and _that_ makes this album worth attention - not the performers' escapades. A few Tibetan tracks are very nice and (supposedly, will be) interesting for western folks. The CD-ROM part of this project merits a separate edition - especially the collection of thangkas!

I was lucky enough to see The Delta 72 in Harrisonburg, VA a while back - and let me tell you, their live show is something no one should miss. "Soul Of A New Machine" captures their live show as best can be done I believe. It is powerful and reckless, with great drum beats and wild but indesipherable lyrics. I recommend this album to all rock fans.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2000-01-03

This CD gives you what you want to hear: It combines a new rythem, and style with flare. I would recommend it to anybody, and think they're one of the greatest bands around.

1 out of 5 stars Pretentious pap.......1999-07-09

From the album notes it's apparent Delta 72 fancy themselves as some kind of breakthrough act, returning rock to its rhythm and blues roots. In reality they are a bunch of poseurs hacking a ballsless, humorless mush out of some spare R&B parts that were lying around. If it's white boys doing R&B you crave, check out The Contortions.

4 out of 5 stars A nice mix of indie rock flare with old school soul.......1999-01-20

After seeing the Delta 72 live at Maxwell's in Hoboken, New Jersey, I decided to pick up a copy of their latest release. I found it to be a sucessfull hybrid of soul and indie rock. It envokes a return to black music before it was pushed aside in favor of rock and pop. This album pays homage to the roots of all music, early blues, jazz and soul while still paving its own very different ground. The recording style is sparse adding a very raw feel, complimenting the Indie rock side of Delta 72. The album works well as a cohesive unit, leaving no instant toss away songs. Songs to note are Monopoly of your Mouth and Scratch. My only complaint, is the repetitivness of the album. Some songs sound very similiar to each other. If your interested in hearing a band that is doing something different instead of churning out mass market bubble pop or three chord brat punk, give Soul of a New Machine a try.

3 out of 5 stars Probably The Least Popular of the Era.......2005-06-12

This was probably the least unpopular Culture Club album of the 80's. George drastically changed his look for promotion of this release. He sported bright red hair and various brightly colored wigs in the video for the songs first single "The War Song." Culture Club turned political. Not only did the look change, but the music changed. The album didnt really have the reggae sound of the first album or the pop sound of "Colour By Numbers." it just sounded different. Buy this one if you must complete your Culture Club collection.

2 out of 5 stars Waking Up With the Band on Fire.......2004-03-26

This third album by Culture Club was a big disaster for the band in terms of songwriting, and--although these are not always good indications of an album's worth though they are in this case--sales and billboard chart rankings. It was a big disappointing follow-up to the brilliant Colour By Numbers. Even Boy George in his autobiography Take It Like a Man admits it is "the most disjointed album we ever made" (pg. 249). The only real hit off the album was "The War Song" which I think many found to be more humorous than good and was promoted by a big production music video. "War, war is stupid and people are stupid"? It probably received more airplay than it deserved for those patronizing lyrics! "The Medal Song" was the second single about the 1940s actress Frances Farmer who was accused of being a Communist, shut away by her mother and given a lobotomy. Boy George wrote it after watching the film Frances (pg. 255). It is a very disjointed track to the point of annoying. "Mistake No. 3" (the third single) is a nice ballad but unremarkable. Next to "Victims," it really falls flat. The rest of the album goes every which way in terms of styles, some even sounding like show tunes (i.e. "Crime Time"). My favorite is "The Dive," which is rather catchy. Still, it is a far cry from Colour By Numbers which had 5 very recognizable singles and was 80s pop at its best from start to finish. If you must have this album, definitely get the re-mastered 2003 version which includes a number of excellent extra tracks.

Just FYI- I would recomend skipping this version of the CD, and instead getting the REMASTERED version that was released in 2003 and includes bonus tracks!

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic and Fun Mix of Songs.......2002-11-10

This CD is a must-have for any true Boy George/Culture Club fan. Although this album was not commercially successful, it's a solid release with a true sound of the 80's. What I find most amazing about this release is George's vocals; powerful and at their most soulful. I really enjoy each track on this collection, but my favorites are "the Dive" and "Crime Time". As with most of George's lyrics, there are underlying messages in each song, with the exception of "The War Song" with it's in-your-face, blunt statement that "War is Stupid and People are Stupid", which offended the overly sensitive when released in 1984.
Overall, this is a great effort by CC that most people overlooked.

    Amazon.com

The dance compilation that boasts its definitiveness, its freshness, or, God forbid, its phatness or dopeness, is, as they say, a dime a dozen. But when a label like Rhino calls their new release an odyssey, chances seem good they're going to deliver just that. Insert your favorite quote about reputation and disappointment here. This 28 track, 2-CD set is indeed an amusing sampling of the genre, featuring bands of historical value (Kraftwerk, Throbbing Gristle, Cybotron) and slightly more modern tried-and-true acts (Underworld, the Orb, the Prodigy, the ubiquitous Chemical Brothers), as well as the occasional guilty pleasure (M/A/R/R/S's "Pump up the Volume" and L.A. Style's "James Brown Is Dead"). Where the collection falls short, however, is on its "odyssey" claim. The cutting edge of the genre is completely ignored in favor of songs that don't necessarily need to appear on more compilations (Gary Numan's "Cars," New Order's "Blue Monday"). Finally, the cuts boom, but they don't flow, missing opportunities to make the most of history or influence (e.g., "Trans-Europe Express" would have made a more interesting Kraftwerk selection, if only so that it could be cozied up with the song that owes it everything, Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock"). All in all, it's a fun trip, just not a mindblower. --Bob Michaels

2 out of 5 stars more of the same.......2001-10-27

A surprisingly perceptive Amazon.com review gets it right: Andrew Weatherall's "Nine O'Clock Drop" is a far superior compilation of cutting edge late 70s/early 80s music. "Machine Soul" is a bunch of tracks, many individually good, with too many previously released on innumerable other compilations; as an "odyssey" it's a dud.

    5 out of 5 stars Surpassingly Enjoyable.......2001-05-10

This compilation consists of the music that the kid in the back of the school bus played on his ghetto blaster. The songs were unintelligible, but catchy. These songs bridged the gap between "white" and "black" music. I remember the majority of these songs, but a few I am hearing for the first time. One of the latter is "Little Fluffy Clouds" by The Orb. When I got to this track, I hit the repeat button and listened to it for hours...now it feels as if I've known it all my life. I was happy to see "Enjoy the Silence" by Depeche Mode included as well as Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock," though I think the long instrumental version would have had a better fit here. Overall, this 2-CD set will serve me well on long trips and at parties. It was hard to find, but well worth the search. If as an 80's teenager/young adult your musical tastes were as eclectic as mine, you will thoroughly enjoy this offering.

4 out of 5 stars The best modern electronic compilation (so far).......2000-04-08

That's right, it's the best modern electronic compilation atpresent - i only hope that the next one is a whole heck of a lotbetter. Reading the liner notes, Rhino intended for this to be a 4 CD set, but (for reasons unknown) it was whittled down to only two. The compilation is an average overview for the uninititaed, but if you're a long-time collector/listener, chances are you have the first CD's cuts already in your collection. The second disc is really spotty - why are Fluke/Uberzone/BT even included? At least one drum 'n' bass/acid/Madchester tune could have been included instead. Better choice of tunes should have been made for the Chemical Brothers/Orb/Underworld/KLF. Anyhoo, i'd use this in my "Electronic Music 101" class, but i wouldn't base the course solely on this. i also recommend checking out _Early Modulations: Vintage Volts_ - a decent intro comp to pre-pre-Kraftwerk electronic music. Hopefully some Moby/Keoki/Crystal Methods fans will give this a listen...

5 out of 5 stars music from machine 2 man..........2000-03-19

it is good that a compilation exists like this-finally. techno compilations can be so spotty, but this is one that finally delivers. it's best for the novice who wants to have a place to start with this underappreciated genre. true, most of us already have these, but it's good to listen to in context. there is quite a bunch of stuff missing ('papua new guinea' from future sound of london is one of the prettiest songs made in any genre), some stuff is tired ('little fluffy clouds' again?) and wrong cuts appear ('numbers' and 'pocket calculator', or all of 'autobahn'-22 minutes! would have been better), not to mention missing subgenres like garage, jungle/drum and bass, and acid house. all in all, a good starting point. good history represented with 'cars','blue monday', and 'i feel love'.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but could have been better.......2000-03-18

This is a hit and miss compilation of music. My only complaint is that there are two very important electronica influences missing here: The Crystal Method and Devo.

    Album Description

Brining to light the legendary group thought of as the missing link between The Meters and the Neville Brothers, this reissue contains an entire unreleased album recorded at Cosimo Matassa's legendary Camp Street studio in 1969. Features group members Gary Brown on sax and Sam Henry on keyboards, with guest appearances by the likes of The Meters' "Zigaboo" Modeliste. The album is augmented by early seventies tracks with soloist Sam Henry, whose combination of the funky and the svelte is no less than Allen Toussaint-esque (really).

4 out of 5 stars New Orleans' Soul Machine: Lost & Found.......2006-07-31

Sam & The Soul Machine were a band connected at birth with The Meters. As Meters fans may know, during 1967 The Meters played New Orleans clubs as a 7-piece band called the Neville Sound; later that year a club owner offered the group - which had included Cyril and Aaron Neville as well as a sax player - a residency, but only able to acommidate four pieces, Cyril, Aaron, and the sax were dropped. With only one Neville left the group's name was changed to The Meters, and after Allen Toussaint caught the group live the legendary producer started using them on sessions by Willie West, Lee Dorsey, Betty Harris, and others on his and Marshall Sehorn's Sansu label. Meanhile Cyril joined forces with Sam Henry (late of the Sam Henry trio, which included guitarist Leo Nocentelli!) to form the Soul Machine, and before long the group became hot in N.O. clubs, but never gained much attention outside the city. Meanwhile, during 1968 Josie Records signed The Meters.
By early 1969 The Meters were hitting the national charts. Allen Toussaint arranged for Sam & The Soul Machine to record an album at Cosimo Matassa's studio; shortly thereafter the IRS closed in on Matassa for tax evasion, confiscating assets and master tapes that included the unreleased Soul Machine album. Thirty-five years later, Funky Delicacies has restored and issued this legendary lost artifact in New Orleans' musical history.
Compared to the Meters - which is inevitable if not fair - these guys have a more langourous, laid back approach, and in Gary Brown a prominent and talented sax player (whiich leads one to guess it may be Brown who plays on the Meters' debut album bonus track called 'Soul Machine.'). For some reason, Cyril Neville, who drummed at gigs and appears on this CD's group cover photo, was replaced by Henry for these spring 1969 sessions by one Joseph Modeliste, whose style and virtuosity is unmistakeable. That was a fortuitous choice, for what better drummer could one hope for in a funk/soul band? Though the music doesn't emphasize the amazing syncopated rhythmic telepathy as the Meters' does, one can hear Modeliste catch fire on the J.B.'s-style workout "Meditation," and elsewhere. Henry himself is not as rhythmic an organ player as Art Neville - his sound more fully suffuses the music and his playing is less percussive than Neville's. Guitarist Eugene Sinegal is a more blues influenced player than Leo Modeliste - check out the title track. And though nobody competes with the Meters, comparisons - whatever these guys' origins - should end when you hear this long lost album. The tracks are indeed funky, laid back and if the sonics aren't up to Sundazed's state of the art remastering job on its Meters reissues, this band has its own identity and skills, and the music grooves along nicely. And there's no question they can play - the music is strong enough to make one wonder what might have happened if the S.M. had gotten its break instead of having this master lying around Sam's quarters all these years. Besides a terrific, jazz- and r & b- influenced funk set, bonus tracks are included (without annotation as to who's playing or singing), by an edition of the group that emphasized vocals more than the original, and that put out one or more singles (the cover states these recordings are from 1969 - 74). In the mid '70s, the S.M. moved to Nashville, played regularly at one of James Brown's clubs until 1978 when, live bands falling by the wayside with the ascendence of disco, Brown himself let the Soul Machine go and turned his club into a disco. Sam Henry later taught music in New Orleans' public school system. Cyril Neville, who had a Meters-backed solo single out on Josie in late '69, soon was playing congas with that bandand by the mid '70s was an official Meter.
Meters fans with copies of that group's debut on CD, take note of the track "Gospel Bird." Fans of N.O. r & b, or funk, check this set out and enjoy the inventive arrangements and raw power.
