5 out of 5 stars NAZARETH ROCKS WITH HAIR OF THE DOG........2007-02-03

Readers and reviewers, I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "HAIR OF THE DOG" by one of Rock's greatest legendary bands and one of Scotland's favorite sons, I give you NAZARETH. "HAIR OF THE DOG" was originally released in 1975 on vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the A & M Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

NAZARETH will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history as being one of the first Scotish bands to ever succeed in playing hard Rock n' Roll the American way. When lead vocalist and frontman Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton, bassist Pete Agnew and drummer Darrell Sweet joined forces, they would re-define how American Rock n' Roll would be played. However, since NAZARETH did hail from Scotland, they did mix their own special blend of Scotish Rock n' Roll with American hard Rock to give it a sound that the whole world could identify with. In my opinion, "HAIR OF THE DOG" should rank as one of Rock's all-time greatest albums.

[....] all of the song tracks which are extremely good, I will just list and review two songs which in my opinion tell the story of this album and displays the album's true personality. The two songs I am talking about are the popular songs "Hair Of The Dog" and "Love Hurts." These two songs should definitely qualify for Rock Anthems in the 1970's. Dan McCafferty sings "Love Hurts" with such power and emotion that you can't help but feel the song along with him. McCafferty also sings this song at such high vocal ranges that you would never think or imagine that a singer can sing like that. [...] Manny Charlton plays a mean guitar in this slow classic rocker. In my opinion, "Hair Of The Dog" is the classic rock stuff that is made of legend. "Hair Of The Dog" is the one great hard Rock song that will forever identify who NAZARETH really is. In "Hair Of The Dog," Dan McCafferty sings and sums up this song with one message in mind, "DON'T MESS WITH A SON-OF-A-BITCH." In "Hair Of The Dog," Manny Charlton plays some of the most vicious guitar chords in Rock history. In my opinion, "Hair Of The Dog" is NAZARETH'S finest hour. After hearing this song, it is also evident where Axl Rose copied his singing style from. Overall, "HAIR OF THE DOG" is one hell of a good album that is worth seeking out.

I highly recommend purchasing this album because it is not only one of NAZARETH'S best ever, but one of Rock n' Roll's best ever. This legendary album will stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, NAZARETH has continued to entertain us to this very day. With frequent personnel changes such as the current lineup comprising of frontman Dan McCafferty, Jimmy Murrison on guitar, Pete Agnew on bass and his son Lee Agnew on drums in place of the now deceased Darrell Sweet who passed away on 30 April 1999. With this new lineup, NAZARETH now has a fresh new youthful look with new added Rock power behind their music. The legend of NAZARETH is far from over and I get the feeling that this band is here to stay. [...] Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars Miss Misery.......2006-10-16

Nazareth really blew the roof off with this one. This album was an absolute masterpiece. This is much better then just the two tracks that everyone knows in Love Hurts and Hair Of The Dog. They were an amazing hard rock band and this album gives you everything you could want plus more.
Hair of the Dog- Outstanding song with great guitar and lyrics.

Miss Misery- My favorite song on this album just rocks the house down.

Love Hurts- In my opinion the weakest song but all bands had to have a power ballad so I don't discount this song at all because it is a good one just not a rocker.

Changin' Times- Another great rocker. Fits in perfect with the rest of the album.

Beggars Day- Nazareth keeps rocking and this one keeps the trend. Awesome song that gets no play.

Rose in the Heather- This is an instrmantal that shows another slower side to the band. Great sounds from this one. Slower then the others but is awesome.

Whiskey Drinkin' Woman- WOW!! This one really hits the spot as a classic. Everything about this song is amazing.

Please Don't Judas Me- This song brings a very intimate message. Perfect way to end this album.

All in all this is one of the best rock albums of the 70's and a must have for anyone who likes classic rock.

4 out of 5 stars More than just the two hits.......2006-07-20

Nazareth's Hair of the Dog is one of the best hard rock albums of the mid-1970's. Although the band is best known for their two hits, the power ballad "Love Hurts" and the title track, which contains one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in rock, Hair of The Dog is a stellar hard rock album from beginning to end. The tracks "Miss Misery" and "Beggars Day" boast both killer riffs and mean vocals from Dan McCafferty, whose voice is very similar to AC/DC's Brian Johnson. "Changin' Times" reminds you a little of Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog" before the long jam at the end while "Whiskey Drinkin' Woman" is a cool blues tune with a guitar sound similar to Lynyrd Skynyrd. The instrumental "Rose in the Heather" is very cool as the synthesizers and guitars blend very well. The epic "Please Don't Judas Me" is also pretty good although it if a couple of minutes were shaved off at the end, it would have been better. All told, Hair of the Dog is a very strong album and proves that Nazareth was more than just a two-hit wonder. Highly recommended to fans of great hard rock.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Rock Must Have--"Love Hurts" One of the First Rock Ballads.......2006-07-12

This is good music period. This has a bitty-bit of that southern flavor and driving licks that launched a thousand garage bands in the day. One of the best things about "Hair of the Dog" was the naughtiness you felt when you sang "..now your messin' with.. a son-of-a-*****..." as a kiddo. The ringing, gravelly vocals which are a cross between a growl and a whine, undoubtedly inspired many future artists of today. Although I always loved "Love Hurts", I really began to love it more when I got the sheet music and read the real words. This first of, if not THE FIRST, rock ballads once translated is one of the most touching, revealing and very moving songs of the era.

Metaldiva Sez: The entire album is basic and a standard for music lovers from any generation. It contains musician-only beloved favs like "Don't Judas Me" but most of all it is just good rock. Great taste of the 70's. Great buy here, too..

America's number one Irish folk band. Greg Haymes of The Albany, NY Times Union says "The new album recorded live at The Parting Glass in Saratoga Springs is the band's best effort to date, a rollicking, rousing 15-song collection that's so vibrant you can almost taste the Guinness".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This CD ROCKS.......2007-05-15

Now this is totally a matter of taste, but if you like Irish Bar Tunes, this CD is for you!!! I've been into traditional Irish music for eight years now, and this is the best CD I own to date!

5 out of 5 stars Foot tapping is infectious.......2003-07-16

Talk about a joyful noise!

OK, so Hair of the Dog isn't purely Irish in its sound or style. The band, based in the Empire State, has obvious Appalachian influences, a bit of rock 'n' roll and even a hint of western swing in its music. But wow, the energy these five boys put out would fill even the truest Irish soul with joy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music........2003-03-28

This CD is so easy flowing, yet at the same time fun to listen to. The vocals are great, and the instrumentals are even better. I listen to this CD everyday. My parents were a fan of them, and because of that I am now too.

Beleive it or not, I am not usually a fan of this genre of music. I am into punk rock but this is such a great CD that I still listen to it.

The banjo player and vocalist, John Haggarty is my highschool guidance counselor. He's a cool guy. And I think its funny he's in a band that I enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars At the Parting Glass..........2002-08-21

captures the fun of a live HOD show. It's a great mix of music showcasing each of the musician's talents.

Have been a fan of HOD for a few years now, and have seen them live several times. This is an excellent album, and has been a mainstay in my car's cd player since I bought it. They have a great sound, and sing with true emotion. Great musicians also. Release the Hounds is also excellent....

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!!!.......2007-05-15

This is my 2nd favorite CD of all time (my 1st being Hair of the Dog's Parting Glass). Being an avid traditional Irish music lover, I'd hear alot of the bar tunes before and they are done to perfection!! I have had only a slight exposure to the IRA songs before this CD, but Hair of the Dog definitely gave me an education with this CD. I have found some new favorite songs thanks to this CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Release the beast.......2007-01-20

This is a great collection of Irish pub fair that will have everyone in car the singing. This is the fourth copy of this I have purchased to give as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars A personal favorite.......2003-07-16

This 1997 release is packed to the gills with traditional Irish songs performed with enthusiasm and style.

Hair of the Dog is a fun band. That's the simplest way to say it. They're not out there breaking new ground, nor are they striving to reinvent themselves as something other than they are -- a fun, lively, pub band full of heart and oodles of talent.

Optimally, you'll see this band live. It's obvious from their recordings, both of which are largely recorded in live venues, that they shine with an audience to bounce their energy right back at them.

5 out of 5 stars Great Irish (-American) fun.......2003-04-28

Hair of the Dog is a wonderfully talented, technically skilled band musically, but it's really the energy they bring to performing that makes them so enticing. This album is a live collection, and represents some of the best-loved Irish songs, as well as some lesser-known tracks. It's hard to say who's having more fun, the band, or the audience...if you're Irish, step into the parlor, and bring your copy of "Release the Hounds!"

5 out of 5 stars STEPHEN FOSTER'S AMERICA.......2006-12-06

I am so happy that I discovered this CD! These interpretations take me back to another place and time when parlor music dominated America's musical culture. In the 19th century, trained singers sang beautiful ballads by the family piano. Douglas Jimerson presents a time capsule with carefully crafted interpretations. By the way, the sound samples on amazon appear to be from an earlier release of the album, and the new recordings are more lovely than I expected.

2 out of 5 stars Keep shopping for Stephen Foster!.......2002-06-05

If I may be blunt, I can't stand this album! Mr. Jimerson's voice is excellent. However, his operatic leanings undermine the spirit of Stephen Foster's music.

As for the arrangments, if Mr. Jimerson is going to keep the words "dere" (for "there") and "dat" (for "that") in the songs, then why exclude the word "darkies" in favor of "mama" and the like? My guess is that fans of Stephen Foster (who, when compared to other minstrel songwriters of his day, imbided the subjects of his songs with a great deal of dignity) are more interested in maintaining the purity of the songs than they are in achieving political correctness via 19th Century songs!

For my money, the Robert Shaw Chorale C.D. of Stephen Foster songs is much more enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Jimerson Not Half Bad.......2002-02-08

These are earnest and heartfelt renditions of Stephen Foster songs that really deliver a period flavor, and nail Foster's emotions on the head. I can't believe that anyone could object to Mr. Jimerson's elision of currently offensive racial terms. There's a difference between "Massa's in de Cold, Cold Ground," which establishes a dramatic situation, take it or leave it, and race-specific epithets that might hurt somebody's feelings in the here and now. My only problem with Mr. Jimerson is that he tends throw these bizarre songs into the mix that have nothing to do with the themes of his albums -- like "He's Got the Whole World." Still, we should be grateful that this sensitive singer (and his fine, period-conscious musicians) are recording great 19th Century sentimental songs. I'd like to see him go even deeper into the literature of the time.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless and Beautiful.......2001-08-01

Faithful renditons of great songs. Every American should know the words to at least half a dozen of these gems. I do not agree with reviewers who believe he should have included the original slurs....these "reviewers" should imagine themselves in Mr. Jimmerson's place, who was singing for a diverse crowd in our nation's capitol in 1990's America. Accuracy ("authenticity"?)is of course crucial, but it is absurd to demand that the performer sing these uncomfortable lines in this setting.

2 out of 5 stars Politally Correct or Stupid?.......2001-02-28

The major thing wrong with this recording is the editing out of the word "darkies" which is like eliminating "cowboy" from western songs. If this guy is so sensitive, why include "Massa" which is a tribute to a slave master. Also, He's Got The Whole World In His Hand is generally attributed to the modern age.

If you want to hear a much better rendition of Foster, and other music of the period, try and find Thomas Hampson, "American Dreamer" and "An Old Song Re-Sung".

5 out of 5 stars This is one of those classics.......2007-03-22

I am partial because I am a big, big Nazareth fan. Dan McAfferty, Pete Agnew and the rest have rocked and rocked since the seventies and they keep on rocking. I know, I saw them when they toured with the "No Mean City" album and then in 2002. Now to get to the review. "Hair..." put Nazareth over the top. None of their albums did as well as this one. Love Hurts is the song that started the selling of the album, but the title cut "Hair..." became an anthem. There is not one bad song on this CD. All of them are fast rocking except for "Please Don't Judas Me", which is a ballad that knocks your socks off. If you have never bought a Nazareth CD, this one is a great starting point (If you really are a hard rocker). Some other songs to look for when buying Naz's CDs are Razamanaz, Broken Down Angel, Bad Bad Boy, Star, Whats In It For Me, Just To Get Into It, This Flight Tonight,Go Down Fighting, Expect No Mercy, Gone Dead Train, Place in Your Heart, Holiday, Heart's Grown Cold, Carry Out Feelings, Mountain Dew,Love Leads To Madness, Shanghai'd In Shanghai, etc. I can keep on going. I love Naz!!!! I put them up there with Led Zep, Aerosmith, AC/DC, etc. They never got the recognition that they deserved. Dan, Pete, Lee, Jimmy, keep on rockin. We miss you Darrell Sweet. God Bless Your Rock and Roll Soul! For you younger rockers, look up Manny Charlton! He was the fourth founding member of Naz (Dan, Pete Manny and Darrell). Nazarerth rose from the ashes of the Shadettes in February 1970 in Dunfermline, Scotland and 37 years later Rock History is still being made! Buy this album and many more Naz CDs

5 out of 5 stars Historical Time Capsule.......2000-08-12

This is the most comprehensive recording I've found of songs popular during the Civil War period. The performances are a time capsule of Civil War music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Work.......2006-01-15

This group's energy and enthusiasm transfers from their live performances to their CDs. Great songs, good flow on the CDs. Overall, I would recommned this CD to anyone who enjoys Irish Pub Songs.

5 out of 5 stars Follow me up to the Parting Glass!.......2003-12-13

I was at one of the recording concerts, and every time I play this disc, memories come flooding back. Like almost spilling my hard cider during the "raise up your glasses and sing" line in "All of the hard days are gone" and the bruises I had on my hands from all that clapping. If you live in the Albany area and have never seen these guys live - SHAME ON YOU!! Those of you who love rowdy Irish music and can't get to a concert, buy this cd instead. Crank it up, pour a Guinness or 3, and you'll almost think you're there.

5 out of 5 stars Another Fine Album.......2003-03-28

These guys have put out yet another energetic, toe-tapping, wanna-sing-along, CD. This one is a good as their last two, however, it does have a few repeats from their previous recordings. All in all a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars Whiskey Makes Me Friskey.......2003-01-09

I was also at the recording, but don't remember them playing anything of these songs. The sauce hit me much earlier than I thought it would. Regardless, a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Jump Up.......2002-11-27

I was at this show as well, and it was great. This recording is just like being there again (minus the countless pints of Guiness).

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2003-06-01

I was looking for a Stephen Foster CD that was not "jazzed up" and maintained the closest fidelity to the old-time recordings. This CD did not disappoint. Most of the renditions of the lesser-known Foster classics are excellent. "Old Black Joe" is particularly moving.

My only problem is with the two old standards: Camptown Races and Oh! Susanna. I get the impression that the vocalist was trying to put his own "stamp" on these two very familiar tunes by accenting odd syllables or using strange intonations. At any rate, they ended up sounding cheesy so that my family members ended up making fun of the idiosyncracies introduced by the singer rather than singing along with the familiar words and melody. Oh! well...

5 out of 5 stars Gem of an Album.......2002-12-26

I have thoroughly enjoyed discovering the full scope of Foster's musical genius through this biography and album of popular Foster songs, choral gems, piano delights, and chamber music arrangements. Douglas Jimerson and Sheryl Cohen have the ideal voices for Foster's beautiful parlor songs.
