I am a fan of Ben Harpers. Have been since the '90's. I love his vision of music. His soulful vocals. The lyrics of this cd and the energy that went into it, make it my favorite all time of his albums. I even own his newer ones, they still do not compare. This is where it all started....

This terrific project's songs are nimble, soulful, catchy, and meaningful. I've heard Harper's entire (sometimes uneven) catalog, and this is his most inspired work.

If You only buy one "Ben Harper" album.......(buy This!!).......2005-01-27

For an artist such as Ben Harper, who's reflective blend of acoustic soul & organic stripped down blues and R&B, coupled with his emotional singer/songwriter approach gave his debut album "Welcome to the Cruel World" a great starting point, for those tired of music lacking any intellectual content. But it was this, his fiery politicised second album "Fight for your mind", that he was to truly make his mark on the musical landscape.

This is a intimate and deeply introspective record, that not only looks inwards, but frequently looks at the world from the perspective of a enraged musical poet (Harper's influences such as: Dylan, Hendrix, Bob Marley, are clear to see). Because for a track like "Another Lonely Day" which is largely minimal in its instrumentation, and relies mostly on Ben's soul-folk singing to carry the emotional impact of this song, (think stripped back folk, with some lovely slide guitar), it went some way to prove that Ben wanted people to hear what he had to say, rather than just purely focus on the music.

"Burn one Down" which is actually a Pro-weed song, with Harper brazenly declaring ""if you don't like my fire, then don't come around, yes I'm gonna burn one down.", shows that Ben like the protest songs of someone like Dylan, many years before him for instance, hasn't shy-ed away from controversial subject matters.

"Ground on Down" is unquestionably my favourite track, Ben hooks up the electric guitar for a occasionally feedback drenched throwdown, that has more place on a rock album, such is its explosive energy, with Harper assuming the lyrical stance of a righteous commentator over the energetic guitar that is probably the nearest he's come to sounding like an infuriated Jimi Hendrix, in this insistent, almost slightly aggressive rock-out.

There is an undeniable sense of Harper wanting to get a lot of his chest, as quite of few of the songs deal with social/racial injustice to some degree, as "Fight For your Mind" & "Oppression" immediately spring to mind, with unsettling guitar tones which range from poignant one minute, to curiously uplifting the next. Although none of this would mean anything without some inspired writing by Harper, that easily surpasses his debut in structure and musical dynamics. In fact Ben would never truly match (much less surpass what was achieved here), this level of articulation and poetic lyrical content, although with impressively strong musical arrangements.

If your looking for a Ben Harper Cd, and your not interested in collecting his albums, then without doubt Its widely known that this was his most significant effort on the album market, and although his other albums are certainly worth a look if you like his music. The combination of righteous finger pointing, consice lyrics and, cerebral blues-folk would never quite have the same bite, as this, his finest album.

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

Despite her roles in mainstream musicals such as Cats and Chicago, Ute Lemper has never been a typical Broadway baby. Her long association with the works of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, as well as her one-woman shows based on the repertoires of Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich, has always marked her as a maverick in a world overpopulated by bland belters and cute ingénues. Lemper's distinctive voice isn't an instrument for easy listening. At full tilt, it's dangerous and edgy. In subdued mode, it's dark, ironic, and despairing. The cruelty that runs through many of her interpretations is taken on the chin. Lemper deals in defiance rather than submission. With just one, edgily updated Weill song ("Tango Ballad") and a host of contributions from Nick Cave, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Philip Glass, and the Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon, Punishing Kiss is a modern, bleak look at love in the 21st century. At times the tone is murderous, even apocalyptic ("The Case Continues"). The duet "Split," sung with Hannon, is a grimly humorous riot of punches and counterpunches in a disintegrating relationship. There's fleeting, poignant beauty too, in tracks like Waits's "Purple Avenue." Essential listening for anyone who likes their torch songs blood-stained, not just dampened by a few tears. --Piers Ford

Oh so very good.......2003-03-06

I fell in love with Ute Lemper when I heard a recording of her singing Kurt Weill's "Bilbao Song." I know she has her detractors, all of whom argue that other people are better at performing Kurt Weill. These people are idiots.

This album came as a shock for me, as she truly stretches out farther than I had expected. Yes, there is a Kurt Weill song here, taken from the Threepenny Opera, but it's rearranged like you've never heard before - with a drum and bass loop churning underneath lush strings and keyboards (but not cheesy keyboards, mind you).

The rest of the album follows in a similar style, though the instrumentation does subtly change for different composers' songs - most notably the addition of a bandoneon for the two Tom Waits songs.

What is amazing about the album is the sense of continuity running through it, in spite its being a collection of songs of different people. The gem of the album, however, is Nick Cave's "Little Water Song," in which, over a beautiful string section, Ute Lemper lets her theatre training and singing mix freely - producing a performance that simply floors me.

What else is there to say? She's simply amazing

The Best CD of All.......2001-07-11

Simply stunning performance of unusual new songs written expressly for her, entirely captivating, imaginatively written and performed. May not appear to be a 'hit' first time round but you will play it again and again, hear more, find new meanings and so much depth.

It is performed dramatically (not as a routine studio tune and lyric) a most stimulating performance. In many ways it is a 'dark' album, not something you will be able to whistle in the bathroom, and all the better for that. If you are looking for real entertainment, look no further.

Ute has to be the most under-rated artist of the current era, wildly flexible in how she performs, in many ways outrageously kitsch. She has performed this album in a tour, which I was privileged to attend and this underlined just how good she - and the album - is. A 'must buy'. Just wish she had a video/DVD as well!

SWEET TORCH SONG TORTURE.......2001-06-03

The statuesque Ute is a beauty so monumental, she's almost architectural. And she's got a voice and delivery to match, plus on this album, a taste for superb material.

My favourites are the Nick Cave, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits songs, but what is really impressive is how her voice holds together the Scott Walker song Scope J (If one can call it a song).

Anyone who can sing along to, let alone intelligently interpret, such a bizarre and dark little symphony, deserves 5 stars just for the effort. I like my divas dark and brooding, like Nico of Velvet Underground, so Ute fits the bill. Investigate and enjoy!

She Is Never What You Expect.......2001-02-01

We all know Ute Lemper as the foremost interpreter of Weill and art songs, but who would have guessed that she is adept at popular tunes too? Well, let me re-phrase, these songs are not "standards", however, they are written by contemporaries that more people would have heard of than Weill. Nick Cave and tom Waits, for example, are two the lyricists whose music is given life on this album. Let's start with the voice: it has a timbre totally unlike any other that you would have come across in pedestrian music circles. It can be warm, it can be cool (with ice-cold precision), it can be smooth or rough. She does whatever she wants to with her voice and the listener sits there with open mouth, awed by the sheer sound of this woman. She doesn't treat her voice as if it is some precious antique, she slams it around and all for the sake of song. Which brings us to her interpretive gifts: they are ample. When I read some of the lyrics in the booklet, I asked myself how she was going to pull it off but she always did and in an approach at odds with whatever you were expecting. Her song selection is most interesting, the only one I was familiar with prior to my purchase was "Streets of Berlin" which I had heard in the movie BENT. In her version, she is very intimate and quiet at first in a way that out-shimmies Mick Jagger (who sang the song in the movie) but then she gets loud and audacious in a way that is totally in keeping with the song's intent and works with instead of against the melody. My only complaint is that occasionally Ms. Lemper lets her voice get the better of her and crosses *that* line into melodrama. Other than this one small quibble, I recommend this disc for listeners who want to be throttled rather than soothed, to think rather than be spoon-fed. Enjoy... I know I did!

Mellow take on the Lips........2007-03-24

This album is very interesting. I had been a skeptic of the string tributes for a long time. I'm a huge Flaming Lips fan, so when I found this for real cheap I picked it up. It is really quite soothing. Plus all the melodies are already familiar. Definately not an essential album but a nice one anyway.

This year Windsor For The Derby celebrates its tenth year with the release of its fifth full-length, We Fight Til Death. Over those ten years Dan Matz (newly relocated to Philadelphia) and Jason McNeely (from Austin) have managed to arduously maintain this project over many miles. Those years have seen many personnel changes and much help from their talented friends. Over the last few years, Timothy White and Ben Cissner have jumped on board to lend their invaluable assistance to WFTD and help create a solid quartet. We Fight Til Death finds WFTD in Bloomington with Dan Burton (Early Day Miners, Ativin) at the controls. This album was recorded and mixed over the last year at Grotto Home Studio with Burton and a few other locals sitting in. WFTD find a way to take each release to a wholly different trajectory while at the same time creating a progressive connection to the last. The skewed pop sensibilities of The Emotional Rescue are hinted at on We Fight Til Death, as well as the dark refrains of 1998's Minnie Greutzfeldt. By combining elements of previous releases and exploring new terrain, We Fight Til Death is Windsor For The Derby's most realized release to date.

We Fight Til Death, the latest release from Dan Matz (The Birdwatcher) and Jason McNeeley, is by far WFTD's most accessible work to date. The influence of Adam Wiltzie (Stars of the Lid, Bedhead), although he is absent from the current WFTD lineup, is still felt on this album. The opening track, "The Melody of a Fallen Tree," recalls an early Bedhead tooling around on top of the rhythm section from New Order's "Temptation." Anyone who has heard Bedhead's cover of "Disorder" can imagine this without taxing their imagination too much: just speed it up and add a melody. "For People Unknown" gives a nod to Can's "Mother Sky", but adds a certain emo feel to the oft-covered and oft-riffed tune. The organ on this track adds a nice dark touch. Imagine a ghostly couples-only song at a haunted high-school skate night, or any scene from Carnival of Lost Souls. "Black Coats" and "We Fight Til Death" are the most driving tracks on this album. Sombre, melancholy and raging at the same time, they represent a WFTD lineup that has found the right blend of rhythmic backbone and minor key introspection that have always been characteristics of WFTD, but rarely saw expression in the same track.

It's not too unusual these days for a new record to evoke the Factory Records sound, the washed thrashing timbres of Sonic Youth's alternate tunings, or the throbbing psychotropic dronings of a Kraut-rock dirge. What is rare, is for a record to distill the essential oils from each of these staples and combine them into a fresh, undated, non-derivative potion. Windsor for the Derby's latest album does just this.

Not As Bad As Alot Complain It To Be.......2006-11-14

While most people agree that Fight For The Rock is NOT Savatage's most well recieved album and is only for die-hard fans, I myself am not a die-hard fan but do like their music as well as this album. Fight For The Rock DOES have some great moments with song's such as Fight For The Rock, their version of the Badfinger Classic Day After Day, as well as Free's Wishing Well, Hyde and She's Only Rock 'N Roll. I remember buying this on Cassette (way way) back in 1986 at the ripe 'ol age of 19 (now 39). Ahhh those were the day's.

Fight for the Rock is widely considered by everyone (including the band) to be Savatage's worst album. Caving to record company pressure, the band abandoned their underground power metal sound and made an album of bland, derivative corporate rock, full of ballads and pop rock clichés.

Despite not living up to the standard set by the band's previous releases, Fight for the Rock does have its good points. Songs like Hyde, the Edge of Midnight, and the title track are closer to what you'd expect from Savatage, standing out like little islands of metal in a sea of love songs and uninspired covers (Badfinger and Free).

Fight for the Rock is an album for Savatage completists only, and is should be sought out only after you get every other Savatage release. Fortunately the band would rebound from this misstep with their metal masterpiece Hall of the Mountain King.

NOTE: While you can pick up the standard version of Fight for the Rock for just a couple bucks, you may want to spend a little more on the German import reissue by SPV. It hasn't been remastered, but the 2002 SPV reissue does have a few extras that make it a better buy. It features 2 additional tracks - live versions of Dungeons are Calling and City Beneath the Surface, but the real bonus is that the liner notes have been expanded to include several pages of very detailed information about the band during this particular stage of their career. When added to the chapters from the other SPV Savatage reissues, you'll get the real story behind one of the best (and most underrated) metal bands of all time.

Savatage's weakest album.......2003-07-21

For collectors only. This record is a conglomeration of uninteresting metal tunes weighed down by generic subject matter, boring instrumentation, and shallow lyrics. Uninspired covers of "Day After Day" and "Wishing Well" don't help. A major disappointment from a band that has done much better work.

Every great band has a less-than average album.......2002-05-23

Fight For The Rock was Savatage's attempt to reach a more main-stream audience and their music suffered accordingly. Normally, an exceptionally excellent metal band, this album is the one that only dedicated Savatage fans will "enjoy".

As other reviewers have noted, in spite of it's many weak moments a couple of the songs are quite good which makes the disc worthwhile if your aim is to collect every Savatage album (as I have).

Do not buy this if you are new to Savatage, instead allow me to recommend "The Wake Of Megellan", "Streets", or "Hall Of The Mountain King".

Fight For The Cheese.......2002-02-27

"Fight For The Cheddar"? Provolone? Swiss? Well, anyway, you get the point. Of course, the whole thing stinks like Limburger, but enough with the message from your local dairy council talk. Obviously a half-a**ed attempt to get a talent to jump thru hoops and into the mainstream, "Fight For The Rock" is simply disappointing. Of course, I can't be too terribly hard on the album, some songs actually gleem with a little Sava-magic. "Hyde" and "She's Only Rock And Roll" are pretty listenable (you can't tell me "She's Only Rock And Roll" is a title that the record company had nothing to do with), but they don't cover up the sloppy teary eyed ballads and other poor tracks. Of course, another version of "Out On The Streets" is found here. Boring. Next idea? Oh yeah, the two cover tunes. Fuh-git about it. Really mediocre and not worthy of being mentioned in the band's memoirs (at least I wouldn't think they would admit to it). Pretty much the only reason I reviewed the shameful mess was because it kept showing up as "We noticed you haven't reviewed this item yet..." Yeah. Thanks.

I love this damn cd!! I don't know why more people pay attention to this release from WARZONE?! It's the awesome NYHC sound of Warzone with great (but not overdone) production values!! "Fear of Regret", "murder in the first degree", "going psycho" are some of the best hardcore songs I've ever heard!! Simply brilliant!!

Not your typical Savatage, still a winner........2006-07-27

With everything that has been said negitively about this now 20 year old release, most new comers to the band would think this is garbage. Don't think this is garbage. It does have it low points, but tracks such as Hyde and Edge of Midnight may have been 2 of thier better songs of the 80's. This was also the debut of new Bassist Johnny Lee Middleton, who is better then original bassist Keith Collins.

The big problem here was that the record company forced alot of the songs to reach more then just the metal community. Jon Oliva told me that he doesn't hate this record like some of the fans have said. He did say he was upset that he didn't have as much control over the recording as he would have liked (savacon 99').

I wanted to give this record 4 stars, I think I'll go with 3 1/2.

The fight is won!.......2005-07-31

Savatage never ceases to amaze me, ever since I discovered them about a year and a half ago (yeah, I know, I'm an extreme latecomer).

This collection comprises one of the best albums I've heard in years. Absolutely beautiful work. For me, the standout piece is their cover of Badfinger's 'Day After Day.'

For the fans of the 'Tage, or even the casual listener, this album is a must have for your collection.
