You have to give props to Motorhead's founding member, bassist, and acid-coated-gravel-voiced singer, Lemmy Kilmister. The man basically invented biker-trash heavy-metal way back in 1975 and he's been playing it (with various line-ups) ever since. Snake Bite of Love has the sort of Energizer Bunny appeal of later Ramones albums. This collection of grinding, thudding tunes about sex, booze, dirty women, and damnation has a tendency to be overly cartoonish and lyrically cheesy ("Dogs of War" sounds like it was created by Motorhead wannabes rather than Motorhead), so those just starting to rev their heads should probably choose a classic like Ace of Spades before tackling Snake Bite. Nonetheless, the album boasts some soon-to-be concert-classics, like the woeful but sinister doomed-soul tale, "Joy of Labor," the anti-politician sing-along "Take the Blame," and the gloomy "Dead and Gone." --Megan O. Not a Clunker in the Lot.......2006-02-10
I first heard "One Kiss/coda: My French Blues (un Autre Baiser)" on SIRIUS. The next day, I went to iTunes, listened to the 30-second samples of each song, and could not download the whole thing fast enough. This recording is, simply, wonderful -- it will, variously, make you want to get up and dance, and cry. A "must-have" for anyone who appreciates virtuosity on display with every cut.
One of the best kept secrets in modern music.......2004-06-18
I first heard "Come On, Sheila" as a single on my local "progressive rock" station and promptly went out and bought the CD. What a wonderful surprise! In my opinion, this may be one of the most underrated disk in many years. Zach goes from strength to strength, from full-blown house rockers such as "Zydeco Jump" to gorgeous ballads such as "Sunset on Louisianne" which take you right to the Bayou. I was able to see him live about five years ago, and the entire club did not sit down from start to finish. If you like rock with a Cajun flair, get this disk!
I simply love this album........2004-05-11
I've read the above reviews and I also have to add that this album is not only one of Zack's best but is one of my all-time favorites. It was the first of his albums that I bought and I've never stopped listening to it since. It's rock & roll, it's cajun zydeco, it's kinda folksy and country, but it is quite simply an evocation of the essence of southern louisiana. I myself am not a cajun by birth, but after hearing this album as well the others I have since been a convert.
Merci mille fois Zach!
This Really Needs a Sixth Star.......2001-03-29
"Snakebite Love" graps you, and by "Burning" your on fire. Your feet will not stop moving for "Dancing at Double D's", and you will shed a tear for the lost purity of the bayou as you listen to "Sunset on Louisianne." Smell the "Crawfish" in the gumbo, your feel clothes cling to you in the humidity "Down in Congo Square", and as the album ends, you will want some one to share "One Kiss", and if you don't speak French Creole you will wish you did. This is a powerful album which tells a story about a a corner of the U.S. about which most people know little. I have been listening to this CD for years, and if it is possible to wear one out, this one that I will. This album is a treat, it doesn't get much better than this.

What about the heartbreakingly beautiful 'Cote Blanche Bay?' Or the combination of 'Sunset ...' and the grief-stricken 'Madame Sosthene' which makes John Prine's 'Paradise' seem pale? Or the guaranteed cripple-healers 'Dancin ...' and 'Crawfish?' I can't believe you didn't sample 'One Kiss' ("I always ask about you, to find if you're asking about me"). Don't you people want to sell this CD? It isn't bad enough that Zach's music will never get airplay on a commercial radio station, so you people have to hide some of his best work in plain sight? Don't just list them, LISTEN TO THEM!!!

Another great 90s Motorhead album.......2007-07-12
This album has a bit of a bluesier and more "feel good rock" to it than most Motorhead albums. There are parts of the more serious "metal" side of Motorhead in Dogs Of War, Night Side and Assassin, but overall this album has a healthy dose of the spontaneity that makes Motorhead such a classic act. Plenty of great guitar solos too!
Snake but no Boar..........2005-05-18
Okay I feel like someone needs to shape up this album's dignity. First of all I'd like to say to all those people who say this album is boring because it sticks to the same formula... in that case DON'T LISTEN TO ANY MOTORHEAD ALBUMS!
Granted it's every Motorhead songs you've heard in you life that's why Snake is overlooked. If Motorhead hadn't made so many albums in the past this would have been the classic.
The title-track is not the only descent song here. What about "Love for sale"? "Better off Dead"? The "Sacrifice" revisiting "Assassin"? And one of my personal favorite Motorsong, "Take The Blame".
If you are new to Motorhead and would like to discover their classics, then I wouldn't recomend this but it's still worth a listen.
Motorhead - 'Snake Bite Love' (CMC International).......2004-10-15
I think this MAY be the first 'new' Motorhead I've heard in awhile now.I've recently listened to '1916' and 'Snake...',I think is better.I know there are still several Motorhead CD's I have yet to check out.Of the eleven tracks here,it is said that some of these tunes are more 'radio friendly' than past Motorhead efforts.Turns out that I actually saw the band twice during their extended tour they did in support of this disc. The cuts that I thought deserved to include in the band's live set are the sizzling "Love For Sale",the title track "Snake Bite Love","Don't Lie To Me","Better Off Dead" and maybe if they'd consider it,the acoustically done "Dead And Gone".A decent catalog CD by Lemmy and crew.Much like AC/DC,The Cramps and Ted Nugent, this powerhouse trio simply REFUSES to change it's fomula.Like the old rule goes,if something works good, don't change it!
Motorhead's most diverse album to date.......2003-05-20
I've read many reviews of Snake Bite Love that were less than flattering. It does not appear to be a favorite- even among Motorhead diehards. Personally, I think it is an excellent album, and a very creative album. I suspect that one of the reasons it was not as well received is because of it's diversity. However, i find Motorhead's continued development and experimentation to be quite refreshing, and I feel that they are at their creative peak, despite 25+ years of churning out music.
The standout tracks are- Love For Sale, Dogs of War, Dead and Gone, and Joy of Labour. Love For Sale is just a great, basic rock and roll song with a contagious guitar riff. I think Dogs of War is a new style song for Motorhead, a song that relies more on a mid-paced tempo, and a hard driving, metallish guitar riff. I really like this style of song. Dead and Gone is a eerie song about loss that has a hypnotic clean guitar riff and uses dynamics to effectively build the song up. Joy of Labor starts off with a snarling, bluesy riff, that tries to tear your face off, not with speed or power, but pure meanness! "Woke up dead...you know I woke up dead..."- this song has great lyrics and Lemmy's vocal transition from the gruff verse to the melodic chorus is impressive.
Assassin is another song that veers a bit off Motorhead's beaten path. It is fast, which is nothing new, but the structure and the stuttering, choppy riffing make this one intersting. The title track, Snake Bite Love is a solid song as well. There are a couple of the standard r&b filler songs on here that could easily be interchanged with other similar songs on other Motorhead albums. For this reason I would rate the album a 9 on the one to ten scale, and a 4.5 on the 5 point scale. Since there is no 4.5 mark on here, I will reward Motorhead for the continued creativity, as they continue to expand their limits within the often constricting boundaries of rock and roll! These guys are never satisfied- which bodes well for us fans!
If my ears were eyes...I would poke them out!.......2003-04-23
I love Motörhead as much as the next headbanger but this album should be considered armed and dangerous! And don't get me wrong I like most of the later material as well as the classics but if you want to listen to this you might as well listen to a toilet flushing over and over again, which would be better.
This album is for diehards only(which I am by the way)! Do your self a favor and save the money to see them live when they come around. If you haven't seen them yet, don't wait because Lemmy's blood is slowy crystalizing into pure cocaine and he doesn't have long left. Besides it's always a good laugh to see Phil Campbell the "Human Blowfish"(If you've seen them you know what I'm talking about).
Long live Lemmy!
