2 out of 5 stars Whining 80's sounding vocals and decent music.......2005-06-01

Don't get this cd if you are looking for some nice traditional sounding music with a new edge. I am so glad I sampled some on Limewire first. The songs sound great until you get that whining cry baby in there yelling about things only 80's songs could accept. Tough lyrics for no reason just reminded me of what is now called arena rock. Its a shame because the music is pretty catchy with it's traditional feel, then it changes. If you aren't into songs like "The Final Countdown" for reasons other than it's novelty, don't grab this!

5 out of 5 stars Better than Rhapsody.......2004-10-27

This album is a triumph from start to finish. Using Rhapsody's groundbreaking debut "Legendary Tales" as a template, earlier ideas such as these are expanded upon and given much further scope here. In this way, the song structures are kept simple, thus avoiding the dangers of over experimentation, from which some of Rhapsody's later compositions tend to suffer.

I would strongly recommend this to anyone who appreciates powerful, yet uplifting music which enriches the very soul.

4 out of 5 stars Rhapsody on Ice.......2004-07-28

I have a rule about solo albums. If the band member is the "band leader" and/or the major songwriter, he or she shouldn't release a solo album unless the material is significantly different from what their main band is doing. Bruce Dickinson's decidedly un-Maiden-ish solo albums are the best example of this. So when Rhapsody founder Luca Turilli comes out with fantasy-themed solo album, I have to be a bit skeptical since there really wasn't any need for this album.
That being said, I sure am glad Luca released King of the Nordic Twilight. It may not be that original (aside from the logo, it's essentially a Rhapsody album), but it is as good as or better than anything Rhapsody has released. All of the Rhapsody trademarks are here - symphonic arrangements, Helloween-inspired guitars and keyboards, catchy vocal melodies, and of course those Dungeons & Dragons lyrics - but they just seem to sound better on this album. Much of the credit goes to vocalist Olaf Hayer (Dionysus), whose style and performance just seems more dynamic than Rhapsody vocalist Fabio Leone. Of course it doesn't hurt that the uber-cheesy narrator from the Rhapsody albums does not appear on this album. Songs like Ancient Forest of Elves and Legend of Steel are among the album's highlights, and the epic title track alone is worth the price of the album. The operatic Princess Aurora is the album's weak point, sounding out of place and just a bit too cheesy, even for a power metal album.
Overall, King of the Nordic Twilight is perhaps a perfect example of what a power metal album should sound like. It should easily appeal to fans of Rhapsody (obviously), Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Freedom Call, and other similar bands. Fans of traditional metal bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest should also find it quite enjoyable. If you're a die-hard death/black metal fan, then you should probably skip this one in favor of something more aggressive.

5 out of 5 stars Very good indeed.......2004-06-29

This allbum does indeed remind you a lot about rhapsody, but the symphonic elements aren't as apparent in the mix as in Rhapsody's. This album has the usual sing along choruses and all that. All in all, this album does partly sound like Rhapsody with hints of Nightwish (when Rannveig sings Princess Aurora), elsewise like Helloween, (Olaf Hayer being german explains that) but most of all it is Rhapsodyish (there's only one blues-style solo - Sascha Paeth plays in the intro of Where Heroes Lie).

My favourite epic track is on this CD. Kings of the Nordic Twilight starts with soft piano , then goes into this choir accompanied with guitars, before moving into this cheerful folkish theme. And that's before Olaf has sung one note....
This epic is so much better than Prophet of the last eclipse which gets a little messy I think.

Other good tracks are Legend of Steel (infectious main theme...) , Black Dragon, Princess Aurora. All songs are good, though I tend to skip the intro(1)/interlude(7)

Also look out for the unlisted track 11 .. Rannveig singing an traditional nordic lullaby in Icelandic.

5 out of 5 stars hail the king!.......2004-02-23

How very appropriate that this great man Luca Turilli should emerge from Italy, the source of so much that is fundamental to the western world and a place where the barbarity of modernism has been, on occasion, so stoutly opposed. The atmosphere of holy empire, king, blood, and soil permeates all Luca's works, as they do those of his countryman Julius Evola, that great Tolkienesque philosopher of empire and tradition that Turilli so marvelously upholds. The soaring, triumphant, mystical metal music of Luca Turilli and Rhapsody is god made flesh, god made steel, god with a vengenance against those who would work against Nature! As western civilization breathes its last, a new culture emerges from the ruins, and it seems, greatest of ironies, that it is in Italy that a new renaissance might begin, with great thinkers like Evola and great artists like Turilli to lead the way. For Turilli is the most traditional of musicians, and yet at the same time, the most cutting edge. In this album he praises the Nordic peoples, who happen to be my own forefathers. Know this! The hammers of Thor march behind the swords of Italy! Even here in the evil empire, the wolrd nerve center of mob rule, anti-spirituality and the rape of the natural environment, there are still those who keep the flame of our great Tradition alive. Doughty men stand with you against the tide of all those polluters, egalitarianists and money-worshippers who seek to overrun us with their base, callow and false ideals! Hail the Empire! Hail the King! Hail Rhapsody! And Hail Luca Turilli! (Oh, and by the way, this album is pretty much just a Rhapsody album, only the vocals are more typically pedestrian metal-style, and you can feel the loss of Starpoli's great classical compositions at times. Not that Turilli's aren't great, too).

5 out of 5 stars Every last note..........2006-06-14

A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous medieval fantasy metal.......2000-11-12

An incredible mix of heavy metal, classical, and renaissance, creating a fantasy type music. Luca Turrili's guitar and composer abilities are masterful. I can't stop playing this album. Just amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Epic!!.......2000-10-18

Luca turilli the founder of Rhapsody delivers this brilliant epical music cd,it's very good, great background orchestra and choirs give it power and an all medieval adventure feel. the cd like in Rhapsody develops a storyline in a fantastic medieval scenario that has elves, warriors and magic amidst it's universe. the music just like Rhapsody is powerfull with beautifull classical interludes and awesome violins, guitars, drums, and vocals that are perfectly supported by amazing keyboards and a very complete orchestra. this import version has a hidden video clip (ancient forest of elves) that you can see on your pc.

4 out of 5 stars a great fantasy metal album.......1999-10-22

Rhapsody's guitarists solo album is comparable to the 2 Rhapsody albums, bombastic metal with classical instuments, orchestras and operasingers. It's like a journey through fairytaleland with heavy guitar.I like this one very much.

Another important factor to consider is that this material has an altogether much lighter and less oppressive atmosphere than the 2nd Rhapsody album which preceeded it. 5 out of 5 stars Probably Turilli's best creation ever.......2003-09-18

Turilli's first solo is truly a masterpiece of symphony and mood. Since this he hasn't been able to keep balance between art and the cheesy pop metal he later concentrated on with Rhapsody. Note that Rhapsody's "Symphony of Enchanted Lands" Luca composed before this solo album is also a masterpiece, though a fairly different one.
"King of the Nordic Twilight" sounds fresh and airy, containing an amazing atmosphere suiting the album's theme and really enhancing the listener's experience of literally frozen castles, frosty winds, mountains, darkness, starlight and all the other fancy things Luca likes putting into his lyrics. It all just works excellently. This experience grows stronger song after song, you can almost feel the winds and the frost and see the smooth shift of colors like aurora borealis.
Luca Turilli is no doubt a master musician, making even the most clicheic of his songs sound somehow interesting. Actually, all his bad songs are far better than most band's average or even good songs.
This has been the case for now.

Luca Turilli is a guitar god.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2000-11-24

Lucca Turilli is the guitar player of Rhapsody and this is his solo album/project. This is Epic Metal and it sounds like a story that you never want to stop listening to. it sounds like a baroque and classical music with heavy metal with hymn-like melodies. i love it and i think you should buy this CD !

2 out of 5 stars YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.......2000-07-24

10 CD's of beautiful pieces of classical music, digitally recorded for only 20 bucks sounds very good. I decided to buy this CD set because of very good price. But, what you will get for your money? Noting special, believe me! I was very disappointed with some performances, but sound quality of some tracks is even worst. Disc No. 6 is one of the most poorly recorded and engineered CD's I have ever heard. I can't believe that this CD is digitally recorded. So, forgot price and look somewhere else. I can recommend this CD box set to absolutely beginners only.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Rhapsody.......2004-10-28

This album is a triumph from start to finish. Using Rhapsody's groundbreaking debut "Legendary Tales" as a template, earlier ideas such as these are expanded upon and given much further scope here. In this way, the song structures are kept simple, thus avoiding the dangers of over experimentation, from which some of Rhapsody's later compositions tend to suffer.

Another important factor to consider is that this material has an altogether much lighter and less oppressive atmosphere than the 2nd Rhapsody album which preceeded it. Even the music itself bridges the gap between what can be generally termed as Hard Rock and true Heavy Metal. The sound production on this album is also much clearer than on the two previous efforts.

Most of the melodies and hooks used here are of the happy singalong variety, as opposed to the main group, whose epic choruses tend inspire the listener into undertaking acts of great heroism! There is also much more emphasis placed on the interplay between individual musicians, such as the dueling lead guitar and violin solos which feature throughout.

Unfortunately not everything on here is quite up to scratch. It seems that Luca is unwilling to allow his rhythm section to experiment a little. This becomes most evident when the second full length track follows with almost exactly the same drum sequence as used by the first! Even some of the later ones are hardly much different, which really detracts from the genuine quality of the songs themselves.

Both male and female vocals are performed to a high standard, and really do provide the icing on the cake. However the foundations of this material without doubt are built upon the wealth of truly unforgettable choruses, which seem to welcome the listener with open arms when returning for another visit. I would strongly recommend this to anyone who appreciates powerful, yet uplifting music which enriches the very soul.

    5 out of 5 stars A great one.......1999-12-28

This album is one of the best metal album that I ever heard. When I first listen it, I tough it would be like Rhapsody, but I found out that is more than that. This album is better than any Rhapsody album, when I heard "to magic horizons"(the overture) I knew this was a more powerfull and more epic album. With this album Luca Turilli proof to be one of the great guitar players and one of the most creative contemporary composers that I ever heard.

His orchestral arrangements are amazing, with that epic feling that only Wagner could make me feel. The song "The Ancient forest of elves" is a great powerfull song and the video is good too.

For those who doesn't like Rhapsody even if you hate the group, but you love metal as I do, this is an album that you have, need to buy, this album soon will become a metal classic.
