Like their moniker suggests, Tortoise wield a thick exterior of styles while the essence of their sound smoothly beats on. They brazenly titled their latest endeavor TNT as if to signal a break from their former shell. But don't be deceived by explosive associations, for the acronym is meant to stand for "Tough-N-Tender." The album displays a tenacious level of technical proficiency and creative divergence from five Chicago guys doing what they love. Tortoise avoids the experimental minimalism displayed on earlier releases in favor of a more accessible and upbeat turn of the collective dial. Rooted in jazz structures, the dripping electronic treatments on most of the tracks further distinguish the sound. Because the thematic expressions jive with unassuming clarity, no vocal or lyrical elements are needed nor occur. While darker sides of psychedelic guitar emerge, the loungy low end sections evoke intrepid fantasies of isolation on the swankiest of desert islands. --Lucas Hilbert

After hearing Mogwai, Explosions, Sigur Rós..........2007-01-01

I decided it was time for me to look into post-rock roots. Tortoise caught my eye. This album blends rock, electronica and jazz flowing over an ambient soundscape. The difference between tracks is incredible. It's as if Aphex Twin, Do Make Say Think and Miles Davis got together and layered their source file tracks into one studio release. Look into this one.

Like finding gold........2006-10-17

A guy at a video store gave me this record, because I had given him a Brian Eno Album for free. From the moment I put it in, the first thought I had was.."now this is what I've been looking for". Having been burned on music for a while, this album filled the tank back up and lit the sucker on fire.
Simply one of the best albums I've heard in 2 years. This album and this group seem to never stick to one genre. ranging from abstract ambient to soft coffee shop jazz, it moves and drifts through a totally unique blend of music and sound.
I now own all the tortoise albums.
Every one with any sense of art and beauty in music should own this record.

Jazz, fusion, samples, post-rock... and then some -a masterpiece.......2006-06-05

I am a newcomer into Tortoise territory. However their sound fits in my mind as a blend between elements I could find in Godspeed You Black Emperor! (the post-rock samples), Brand X and Medeski Martin & Wood (the jazz and the fusion), Flaming Lips (the experimentation)... and then some. In a showcase of musicianship, they accomplish in TNT a magnificent album that eludes tags and typical paradigms. Take "I Set My Face To The Hillside", for example. This is a track where you can even hear influences from French music, making it one of the most beautiful tracks on the album. Still, it only stands out just a bit because the entire album is a masterpiece.

Exquisite four-and-half star Ambience.......2005-02-21

Where their debut had been a mixed and largely unstructured collection of leftfield soundscapes, followed by Millions Now Living's surprising love-letter to Krautrock, the third Tortoise release, the all instrumental TNT, was almost a lounge album - but lounge for thinkers. You certainly couldn't call this a rock album, any more than you could call it techno, acoustic, ambient or jazz, but Tortoise take all of those styles and more, building fabulously fat beds of bottom end, overlaid with gorgeous multi-layered guitars, vibes and sampled found sounds, and emerge with one of the last decade's most endlessly satisfying releases.

With it's frantic, sampled drum pattern, `Jetty' could almost be trip-hop, (in fact trip-hop is the lasting after-image of the album), `Swung From The Gutters' has a vague jazz structure to it, at the same time throwing in backward tape effects, `I Set My Face To The Hillside' combines - almost unbelievably - both Spaghetti Western and oriental themes¼ and so it goes, constantly bewildering, constantly enchanting. And then there's the divine beauty of the title track... (sigh)

And it gets better with every listen.

Solid all around.......2004-05-26

A very solid record, not a bad track found here. This is not music you would listen to with friends, but it is perfect for mornings or evenings alone as well as for driving at night. I think the song "the Equator" is the finest electronic song I have ever heard. I imagine this would be the music that would play in the background of a movie as someone ran through the rain forest at night. Very vibrant and imaginative textures. You won't be dissapointed.

Before Monty Python, before the Beatles, before "'Enery the Aigth Oi Am" there was the subtle, sweet, insdious humor of Flanders and Swann, and their lyrics remain part of the recognition rituals of Ivy Leaguers of the sixties. For any aging hippies or yuppies who find life WAY more stressful than we ever expected, and for whom the down side of alcohol, sex, and drugs has become apparent, I recommend listening several times to "In the Bath". It raises a cry for peace among the nations by inviting all the leaders to sit congenially steaming in a communal bathtub. And they reminding us of our essential self-interest when they add the proviso "as long as Swann and Flanders get the end without the taps." On those nights when we suspect that there isn't any point to it all, reach for the Flanders and Swann. They won't convince you there is any meaning to life, but they'll make it a lot easier to bear. Don't even try to do without it.

Have Some Madeira.......2005-07-06

Not every line in Flanders and Swann has become part of our 37-year marriage, but many have. As our turntables fail, we are pleased that we can relive all the fun stuff we used to collect. Nothing is like this duo, especially what you usually hear as French horn by Mozart converted into "I found that horn go(r)ne." And, of course,
"Have some Madeira, m'dear" is an all-time favorite.

British humour at its best.......2003-03-15

When I started out as a teacher of English, I had the most wonderful colleague as a mentor -- when she retired she gave me three LPs with much of what is on these CDs, and it must be one of the best gifts I have ever been given. Practically all of it makes me smile or laugh out loud (although I must admit that some, like The Armadillo and Slow Train, make me so melancholy that I can just feel my lower lip tremble and my eyes fill up). How can you beat lines like "Hail to thee, blithe Wompom", or "The English are moral, the English are good / And clever, and modest, and misunderstood"? I find they make great listening exercises for my teenaged students as well -- they consider it ancient, but incredibly funny!

If you haven't heard this..........2003-01-16

The great comedic pairing of the late Michael Flanders (vocals) and Donald Swann (piano and occasional vocals) must surely rank among the hall of fame of comic singers and songwriters. Descended from the British music hall tradition, these two men wrote and performed music which still sparkles with wit today, some 40 or more years since it was recorded.

After being told to take up singing as a means of strengthening his polio-weakened lungs, the wheelchair-bound Flanders teamed up with pianist Swann and proceeded to write such classic songs as "The Hippo Song (Mud Mud Glorious Mud)", "The Gasman Cometh", "The Gnu Song", "A Transport of Delight" and many others. As well as a gently satirical spirit, all these songs feature the sublime wordplay and interplay of both men.

The first two discs of this box set are actual concerts - "At The Drop Of A Hat" and its successor "At The Drop Of Another Hat". Recorded at the height of the duo's popularity and form, the sound quality is surprisingly good for recordings this old.

"At The Drop Of A Hat" opens with three of the Flanders and Swann classics. "Transport Of Delight", a song in praise of the "97 horsepower omnibus" features the wonderful harmonies of the duo on lines like "any more fares" and Flanders' dead-on impression of a London busdriver "Geddardait, we're full right up inside". "Song of Reproduction" deals with the new, as it was then, stereo technology and features Flanders delivering an incredible monologue using every conceivable piece of audiophile jargon. "The Gnu Song" (in which "gnu" is pronounced phonetically) is a real treat. The audience's reaction to the reappearance of the gnu is superb.
As well as this opening trio, the disc features Flanders' snippets of "Songs For Our Time" (in which he experiments with conventions of hit songs), "Song of the Weather" (a rundown of English weather throughout the year), "The Reluctant Cannibal" (featuring Swann in the tititular role and the chorus "I can't eat people/I won't eat people/eatin' people is wrong"), Swann's foray into Greek folksong "Kokraki" and the justifiably famous "Madeira M'Dear". The performance ends with a rousing version of "The Hippo Song".
Flanders is in fine voice throughout and his comments introducing each song are delivered with deadpan accuracy. The story behind "The Gnu Song" is an absolute masterpiece. Flanders' monologue about the creation of "Greensleeves" is also superb - "'Greenfleeves'. That's an interesting name for a fong" (referencing old English script) being just a taste.

"Another Hat" begins in equally fine form with "Gasman Cometh" and "Ill Wind". "Gasman", presaged as "a tale of unending domestic upheaval", is sure to have most people who've ever dealt with unreliable tradesmen nodding in agreement, while "Ill Wind" is Flanders' attempt at setting words to a French horn concerto featuring the immortal lines "I lost that horn/lost that horn/lost that horn/found that horn/gorn". The performance continues with Swann's Russian/English song "In The Desert", the ending of which is truly side-splitting. "All Gall" (a reinterpretation of "This Old Man" to fit then-French President Charles de Gaulle) is a little dated but very cleverly done. "Song of Patriotic Prejudice", with its introduction and opening lines grabbing the audience's attention is another triumph, while the "Hippo Encore" is a great end to the performance.
Again Flanders is at his peak. His loving description of the Spanish olive-stuffers ("Olividados") and his superb story about flying ("By Air") are both brilliant examples of the shaggy dog story.
My favourite from both of these discs would have to be "First and Second Law". Flanders decides to educate Swann in elementary science and picks on the first and second laws of thermodynamics ("heat is work and work is heat" and "heat cannot of itself pass from one body to a hotter body") and the repetition of these phrases in time to Swann's barely-there piano accompaniment is one of the finest moments in British comedy.

The third disc is largely forgettable. It begins with a series of animal-related songs performed in a studio and without much of Flanders' rambling introductions. "Warthog" has its moments, while the others were clearly not performed in front of an audience for a reason. "Wompom" is also mildly diverting, presenting a story about a made-up substance which is the answer to everything.
The rest of the disc is then filled out with much earlier material in a rather poorly-recorded concert. "20 Tons of TNT" (related to the calculation the pair had done which gave that as the amount of TNT per person on the planet at the time) provides food for thought, but little more.

Is this box set for everyone? No. Much of the humour both within and without the songs does require a bit of background knowledge to what was going on in Britain and Europe at the time (1960s), John Profumo is referenced a few times as well as Charles de Gaulle and the Common Market, while a smattering of classical music knowledge can help out a bit with Swann's work and "Ill Wind". The fact that my grandfather (who's in his late 70s) recalls hearing these songs and laughing may give an indication as to the age of some of the subject matter. Equally the fact that "First and Second Law" references an awful lot of physics might do the same.

Nevertheless, for anyone who loves British humour done in a gentle manner or who is interested in the source of "mud mud glorious mud/nothing quite like it for cooling the blood", give these CDs some serious consideration.

Gentle Satire.......2002-04-03

I've been singing Flanders and Swann every day In the Bath since I first heard them in 1964. If you don't know them, think Gilbert and Sullivan by way of English music hall and Noel Coward, with a bit of Tom Lehrer musical satire and classic Bob Newhart or Charlie Manna monologues. F&S commented gently on their times: "The purpose of satire, it has been rightly said, is to strip away the veneer of comfortable illusion and cozy half-truth. And our job, as I see it, is to put it back again." Quite simply the best comic songs and patter of the 20th century. Michael died in 1975, Donald in 1994. Goodnight, Mabel Figworthy, wherever you are.

Here are some samples of Michael's verbal wit.

Wordplay:
- "A Transport of Delight," their song of the pleasures of the double-decker bus "has recently been adopted as the theme song of the Underground resistance movement."
- Speculating that Henry VIII wrote Greensleeves: "and the royalties go to royalty."
- About a tennis referee late in the day: "the umpire upon whom the sun never sets."
- Explaining how he was hoisted in his wheelchair onto airliners by a fork lift: "Why they need a great machine like that to lift forks I do not know. Well, they're only plastic, now, aren't they?"
- On status symbols: "The object is to Gunga Din your neighbor: 'I'm a better man than you' is the acid test," and, "let's bang our status cymbals with the best."
- To a disenchanted cannibal: "You used to be a regular anthropophagi."
- Of a lecher: "And he said as he hastened to put out the cat, the wine, his cigar, and the lamps," while the girl "lowered her standards by raising her glass, her courage, her eyes, and his hopes."
- At the corrida d'olivas (the Andorran festival of olive stuffing, not to be confused with the Spanish corrida de toros, or bullfight): "And a great cry goes up of Ole! He has made an 'ol."
- "It's no good going up to a scientist and saying to him like you would to anybody else, 'Good morning, how are you, lend me a quid, and so on.' He'll just glare at you, or make a rude retort."

Throw-aways
- During the height of the cold war the Soviet Union sent the Moscow Ballet on a world tour. Donald sang one chorus of the Hippopotamus Song "mud, mud, glorious mud - nothing quite like it for cooling the blood" in Russian. Michael: "That should improve our cultural relations."
- During the 1963 Mandy Rice-Davies and Christine Keeler scandal: "None of that going around saying no smoke without fire. Nil cumbustibus, Profumo." Also, from "Friendly Duet," "such models of friendship are precious and rare, while the friendship of models is not."
- "Now if you're writing a musical, as I'm sure practically all of you are, . . ."
- Of Donald: "You know that no one has a higher regard for your music . . . than you do yourself. I merely meant that you are not great because you are not dead. If you wish to be great you must stop composing and start decomposing."
- "We never found a rhyme for (Soviet Premier Nikita) "Kruschev" until he was dead: Did he die or was he "pushed off"?"
- "We spent two dreadful, uh, delightful years, entertaining the Americans whose need, let's face it, is greater even than yours. Of course, when we're over there we say that the other way 'round."
- "No matter what you may say about the Germans, and who doesn't . . ."
- "Some of the songs that have made our names a household word, like slop-bucket . . ."
- "They've started testing cars now. They started at 10 years, then 5, now three. There's even some talk of having them tested before they leave the factory."

Absurdities
- "I'm delirious about our new oven fitted with the eye-level grill. This means that without my having to bend down the hot fat can squirt straight into my eye."
- A spectator during the construction of Stonehenge: "So, it's not going to be lived in. Well, that's something anyway. So what is it, then? It's a what?! A calendar?! A bit big for a calendar isn't it? You'd look pretty foolish with that on your desk."
- "Donald knocked himself out this morning. Got one of those new pop-up toasters. Nasty things."

Incredible multiple rhymes:
- "The fair hippoptama he aimed to entice from her seat on her hilltop above, as she hadn't got a ma to give her advice, went tip-toeing down to her love."
- Of Josephine: "Nonsense, said Bonaparte. She lives on her own, apart, in her own apartment."
- "Oh let us be married if our parents don't mind. We'd be happy and inseparable. Inextricably entwined. We'd live happily every after, said the Honeysuckle to the Bindweed."
- "And you'll always see a single lace-less left-hand leather boot. A bootless British river bank's a shock. We leave them there at midnight, you can track a member's route by the alternating print of boot and sock."

TNT never stop amazing me........2006-07-05

I love everything TNT has put out - from Tell No Tales to Intuition, and from My Religion to this new masterpiece. "All the Way to the Sun" isn't afraid of trying new things. There is even a cover of "What A Wonderful World" here. Granted, it is not as good as the original, but it is still a quality track.

Standout tracks: Too Late, Driving, Me and I, Sometimes, All the Way to the Sun, Ready to Fly.

Melodic Rock Craftsmen.......2006-03-05

I absolutely love TNT and have about every release on disc, with the exception of "Knights of the New Thunder", which I have on vinyl. These guys continue to put forth great melodic rock and continue to strive in today's world of "cookie-cutter" new rock bands who have no imagination nor any original ideas whatsoever. Tony Harnell -- explosive, yet melodic! Diesel Dahl -- dynamic drummer! Ronnie Le Tekro -- guitar virtuoso! Morty Black -- I will miss his bass playing!! This is yet another work of art from my favorite all-time melodic rock group!

While not exactly as hard hitting as "My religion", this new one is still an exceptional album with incredibly well crafted songs, exploding the envelope of conventional metal and covering old things in a very fresh and original way. I hope they will find a replacement for the excellent Morty Black. The album follows the format of its 2004 predecessor, but the songs are a little bit different here, keeping things fresh and exciting. TNT is a band that never gets old...

Not the real TNT.......2006-01-26

Intuition and Tell No Tales are flagship albums for most TNT fans. My Religion gave to the fans what they wanted. In contrast, All the Way to the Sun is a lot more diverse, so there are SOME trademark TNT sounds in there, but most songs feel too different to be as satisfying to listen to. The album doesn't flow as nicely either, because of too much diversity. I really hope they keep recording, but if they want to keep thier fan base they need to stick to thier sound. Some people would say thats boring and selling out, but not me - I will never get bored of thier classic albums.

These chicks SWING!!!.......2007-05-01

Chicks rule - especially those with a penchant for hard-swinging big-band jazz like this band! I thoroughly enjoyed every note of this CD, and the charts by Tommy Newsom are perfect for the talents of Sherrie Maricle and her killer lineup of musicians.

I write these words just as we learned of Tommy having just passed away, because he was a brilliant musical genius, and his arrangements for this group hit the spot (the Nat Cole medley was my favorite one of all the tracks). I hope that when they hit the studio next time, they get another first-rate chart man on board. Let's hear more!!!

If I didn't already own this CD, I would have bought it from reading that single review. I DID purchase another ("I Believe In You") through the
excellent srvices of cmessner --and wrote my own review on that one.
Yo... most hard-working musicians NEVER think in terms of "gender," but
that doesn't seem to influence the chauvinists who are always out to put
down and detract from the artistry of great players who "happen to be
women."
And, by the way, all of you bias-bathed gooblatrons out there: Why don't
you focus your negative assessments on some of the truly bad playing and
arrangements that come flooding out from over-rated MALE performers?
("Oh, no, that might be deemed "sexist" or "politically incorrect"!)
Stop seeing music through hose-colored glasses.

Powerful big band jazz played by great musicians who happen to be women!.......2007-01-23

In all fairness to the great musicians on this CD, you should really listen to it before reading anything about the band, the leader or the musicians. This is a great swinging album with first rate charts, great solos and tight ensemble playing. Clearly these musicians have been playing together for a long time and they together play as one. The leader, drummer Sherrie Maricle and the other musicians in the band are all women and I hope that someday it won't even need to be mentioned. If this was a review of the Basie band, the gender of the musicians wouldn't be mentioned and nobody would be surprised that the band sounded great. But we still have a lot of gender issues in the world of jazz and women jazz musicians are still very much in the minority. So it needs to be noted that this is indeed a jazz band of great musicians who happen to be women and that they swing, play hard and sound as good as or even better than the Basie band in my opinion. Why are there still so few women in jazz and why do they have to considered "women in jazz" instead of just jazz musicians? Hopefully, this is starting to change as the new generation of young women gets exposed to jazz in the school systems and are encouraged by their band instructors to play instruments other than the traditional female instruments of vocals and piano. I recently spent 4 days at the annual IAJE Jazz Educator's conference in New York City where there were wall to wall jazz musicians and educators on 3 floors of the Hilton and Sheraton Hotels. There were over 200 concerts, seminars and workshops over the course of 4 days and there were a lot of women and girls playing in bands and attending as students. Several women band leaders were given almost prime time slots for their concerts (Ingrid Jensen and Anita Brown to name two had concerts at 4 PM and 6 PM)and The IAJE Sisters in Jazz big band played for the closing night gala honoring Michel Legrand. While this is a great trend, we're not there yet. For instance, the only female Jazz Master in the Great Day in Jazz photo that was taken was vocalist Nancy Wilson and there was only one NEA Jazz Master award given to a woman this year, pianist/band leader Toshiko Akiyoshi. It's a start as there were no NEA Jazz Master awards given to women in 2006. So we have a long way to go but we're getting there slowly and bands like DIVA are one of the reasons. Back to the DIVA Band: This is a great CD and if you love the sounds of the big band, buy it and add it to your collection. 5 stars Marilynn Seits

Great Live Blues from one of Blues best dou's.......2006-10-12

Live from 1974 Montreaux jazz festival Buddy Guy and Junior Wells play with Pine Top Penkins and Bill Wyman. Sound quality is excellent, set selection is a nice combination of slow and fast tunes and Buddy and Junior do a nice job sharing the lime light. Buddy does a nice job of tone it down for Junior while still providing plenty of heat. Great rap with the crowd as well. If you get a chance to see Buddy live, please make the effort to see one of the last great blues men. This is a great CD for people who love live blues.

Definitely Smokin'!.......2006-07-03

This album captures two of the best blues masters at their best in the mid-seventies. Blues was not on the radar during those years, but Buddy Guy and Junior Wells show how the blues was kept alive to an appreciative audience in Europe. (They even mention how they are not appreciated at home!)

Since it was a live recording, the mix was not quite as balanced as I would have liked, since Terry Taylor and Pinetop Perkins play some tasty guitar and piano, respectively. But overall, the band cooks through an all-too-short set! A must-have, if for no other reason that it is a great representation of great blues in the mid-seventies.

What else can be said? Buddy and Junior at top form! A highlight is Buddy's heartfelt introduction to Ten Years Ago, thanking the European fans for making them feel more at home sometimes then they feel while on tour in the States.

One thing very relavatory about this album for some people, would be finding out that Wyman is a truly excellent blues bassist,maybe as good as there has been...

This is some serious blues people. Real American homegrown. Listen to "When you see tears"..Buddy Guy has lived this, and it pours out in this song..."I can't sleep at night because I'm nervous"....its so potent, its so honest, not some wanked out British imitation...not for casual listeners or kids...

A live masterpiece.......2002-03-06

This is certainly one the best live blues performance I have heard. I love the live version of Hoodoo man Blues - it is even better then the original studio classic from 10 years earlier. Checking on my Baby - is as good as this song ever got, even when Sonny Boy Williamson first did it.
Buddy Gut takes over the slower blues, such as "Ten years ago" - as only he can, while Wells is the master of the faster blues. Wells' rough vocals are offset by Guy's smoother delivery, and everything fits beautifully. The harmonica (Wells) and guitar (Guy) solos are all great, and the band sounds united and relaxed at the same time.
This is a CD for ALL those who want to listen to blues, performed live and exciting.

On his previous CD, In the Spur of the Moment, Turre used three different pianists to explore soul, modal, and Latin material. For his first quintet recording, the trombonist matches up with three front-ranking tenor saxophonists--James Carter, Dewey Redman, and David Sanchez--and goes even further afield, invoking influences and associates from Ray Charles to Roland Kirk and Eric Dolphy. Carter is present for four tracks and they cut the broadest swath. Stanley Turrentine's "Back in the Day" is soulful, medium-tempo, bop blues that climaxes in an improvised duet between Turre's restrained trombone and Carter's raucous tenor. "Hallelujah, I Love Her So" is a playful excursion in the world of Ray Charles's secular gospel, while "Eric the Great" has the band pressing the free-jazz envelope in tribute to Dolphy. Sanchez, in contrast, is booting and direct, whether invoking his Latin roots on "Puente of Soul" or playing straight-ahead on "E.J.," Turre's homage to Elvin Jones. The biggest surprise, though, is Dewey Redman. On "Stompin' at the Savoy," he and Turre take a long look at the Chick Webb anthem with the senior avant-gardist touching on early influences like Lester Young and Dexter Gordon. "Dewey's Dance," though, is driving, Spanish-tinged modal heat. For all the variety, tenor fireworks, and input from two excellent rhythm sections, it's Turre who makes the strongest impression, imparting consistent musical and emotional focus. He's a consummate trombonist, from vocalic mute work to crisp bop articulation and warm balladry, and he feels his material, seemingly concentrating all his attention on the phrase at hand. --Stuart Broomer

Turre does it again.......2001-08-23

Trombone and conch shell virtuoso Turre does it again on a wonderful collaboration with some of the finest jazz saxophonists around. Turre visits different genres, as always on this album, and again does a wonderful job. Turre can be heard sliding all over the changes with some gutbucket trombone, then switching over to a modern latin sound. I enjoyed this CD almost as much as "In the Spur of the Moment"(telarc 83484), and as a trombonist Turre's playing is, as always, greatly inspiring to me.

At their best........2001-08-19

This is one of the finest recordings of either artist. Buddy does not overplay-as he often does. Instead he pairs up with longtime running mate Junior to produce some down home delta blues. Pinetop Perkins leads an odd supporting cast which includes bassist Bill Wyman yet they manage to pull it off nicely. Classic cuts by some classic bluesmen whose egos had yet to derail their performances as they would later on in their careers. The sound quality is also quite good. This one's worth getting...Simon

One of the first kings of distortion........2007-01-29

Together with Albert Collins & Guitar Slim (Eddie Jones) Johnny Guitar Watson was an innovator and an advocate of the now famous "dirty tone".
That busted amp, overdrive distortion sound is now commonplace but JGW was using it long before Hendrix came on the scene.
Listen to "Hot Little Mama" and you'll hear how Watson influenced so many young white Blues singers/guitarists, among them Johnny Winter & Steve Miller. Winter tried hard to sound alot like Johnny G during his early years and did well.
Frank Zappa considered JGW to be the best ever. On this CD here there isn't one bad track. My favourite is the one that became famously connected to Johnny i.e. "Three Hours Past Midnight". Nobody does this song like him. This CD is beautifully presented with a cover that says it all and a good amount of useful info in the liner notes. Get this one before it becomes deleted which is commonplace with "ACE" CD's. Don't bother with any of the '70s funk compilations.

Jump blues, at it's rockinest!.......2004-06-14

Talk about rockin' jump blues, these sides feature Watson's hot guitar riffs, and hsi appealing rough vocals, that sound so hip and cool! Most of the tracks feature plenty solo space for Watson's unique and creative and even improvisational playing, all the tracks, or at least most have big band backing, or at least a few wailin' horns in the background. this is a rollicking set, and swing dancers will love the livlier tracks, and even the laid back ones rock! Exellent cd, buy thsi along with 2 Hours Past Midnight, and The Very best Of...

Johnny Watson's early records on Modern and RPM. Just some of the best damn blues music ever recorded. People like Kim Wilson, Robert Cray, Wolfman Washington and even young Sean Costello have recorded Johnny "Guitar" Watson. Not as much R&B or funk at this time but you could certainly see where he was going. A must for any traditonal blues lover!!!!!!!!

The correct description & song list for this cd is as follows:
Swedish Erotica has two previous CD's before this one. The first was Swedish Erotica - Swedish Erotica 1989 and the second cd was Swedish Erotica - Blindman's Justice 1995. They are similar to TNT, Treat, Poison, Di Vinci & Shy. The newest CD Too Daze Gone is in the same vein of party rock and also includes demos from the first CD.
