Album Description

“chasing the ghost” is haunting and captivating, with an essence that cuts to the core. Its hypnotic lull of orchestrated sounds and heartfelt emotion reveal a journey reaching deep into the psyche that will grab you and not let go. Recognized as innovators in sound, Collide prefer to cut their own path. This album, although decidedly different from their previous CDs, once again treads on new ground, combining new elements into a powerful whole.

Rarely in the darkwave genre do I find anybody that I consider to be interresting, however this time around, I'm satisfied. Collide is a collition of trip hop and goth that sounds like a terrible idea, but actually works out quite well. Collide will trip you out big time!

3 out of 5 stars OKAY BUT NOT STELLAR.......2007-05-18

I like songs 1, 2, 7 and the band's dance remake of White Rabbit. kaRin's voice is hauntingly similar to Kate Bush; although real heavy on the Vo-Coder. Some of the songs, instead of being entrancing tend to drone on and none of the tracks pop out as a really strong single. However, I am not sorry I bought the cd and would recommend it to others because it's easy on the ears (very melodic).

5 out of 5 stars Music for the Witching Hour.......2007-04-13

This album is so darkly ethereal and richly textured that I yearn for the poet's ability to paint a vivid word picture of its seductive sound. Sadly, I am not the world reknown poet any review of this album demands, but simply your average music lover, and after musing over it so long my brain cramps, the best I can come up with is something like. "Hey, what do you get when you cross a goth chick with a computer geek?" So you will just have to use your imagination.

Imagine the perfect song for a lovesick vampire. Imagine what moonlight peeking through gathering stormclouds sounds like. Imagine a Hammer horror movie with a Moby soundtrack. Imagine the distant music that haunts the dreams of some half-mad hero from an H.P. Lovecraft story. Imagine the perfect CD for your date with that fair-skinned lovely with the black lipstick and fingernail polish.
Imagine closing your eyes and feeling the sound sweep over you, setting you hair on end and your soul on fire.

Then stop imagining it and order this CD. Wait for a dark and stormy night and slip it in. Set your imagination free on midnite wings...

5 out of 5 stars Chasing the Ghost : one of Collide's best!.......2007-04-13

I highly recommend this Cd to anyone who loves to be swept away in imagination. I find all of Collide's music highly moving and inspiring, and Chasing the Ghost is one that truly grabs you and carries you away. I can't say enough about this cd really.. but it's definitely one of my all-time favorite cds. Dark and alluring.... perfection!

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizingly Hard!!.......2007-04-12

This album is definitely a haunting series of songs!! The bands ability to add that certain haunting nature to Karin's voice is, in my experience, rare!! Defintely a must have for your hard core gothic/industrial/electronica collection!!!

2 out of 5 stars Hallo-wha?.......2006-04-19

Let me start by saying I've never listened to Steamroller before picking this up. I am a big fan of Halloween and have quite a collection of music/sound fx so naturally, this was a must buy when I saw it.
Strictly from a Halloween fan's point of view, I can't recommend this except maybe for a kids party. The synth on the tracks really removes any spookiness from the tunes and makes them fall short of Halloween-worthiness. Tocatta and Hall of the Mountain King are some of my absolute favorite classical pieces and here they are given a royal treatment...if they were produced on a Commodore 64, or Casio keyboard for you younger folk.
The FX disc isn't horrible, but it's below the average generic sound fx you find in the bargain bin. Again, not much scary except for the fact that I spent money on this.
If possible, check it out before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars An interest take on the usual.......2005-11-06

I wasn't sure what I'd think of this from reading other reviews, but I really did like it. I'm not really familiar with Mannheim's other stuff (but if the rest of the Autumn cd is anything like Harvest Dance, I'm looking forward to getting it), so I didn't have any preconceived ideas. I have a lot of the classical pieces on other cds, but I like the different twist given to them here. And I did like the sound effect cd. Nicely spooky (I have enough other sound effects cds with screaming and muching ghouls, etc).

2 out of 5 stars Could have been great but . . ........2004-10-15

As a big Steamroller fan, perhaps my hopes were set a little too high. I envisioned more original music (perhaps a more scarier vibe than the silly one this CD has to it) and maybe a few covered tunes. Chips originals (from the Fresh Aire series)found on this CD outshine the weak efforts put forth on the covered and rearranged tracks. The sound effects disc sets a great(and creepy)mood, that should had been followed through with some new and equally scary compositions.

If you're a die hard Mannheim fan (as in 'I just have to own everything Chip puts out') I say go for it. But otherwise spend your Halloween money elsewhere. Overall this is a forced and lazy effort.

4 out of 5 stars It's not That bad..........2004-06-14

It's not scary. There, you have it, that's what it all boils down to. With a creepy cover like that, you'd think it would be terrifying! It's not, but it's not bad, either!

A lot of the songs sound kind of like low-budget MIDI tunes that are sometimes embedded in websites.. but I think that might have been what the Steamroller was going for. Kind of like a broken Music Box? Anyway, only a few sound low budget, the rest sound good, even a few are a little "eerie" but at the same time, there's a lot that pretty much remind me of something you would hear come out of sesame street toy. The sound effects are great, though.

There's a few songs that are bad. there's a few that are "babyish" but there's also Lots that really capture the mood of halloween and some of it's eerieness. I can't really recommend it for Halloween itself (maybe if you already have every halloween cd already) but I think any Chip Davis fan should give it a listen.

3 out of 5 stars Tries to please everyone.......2004-06-02

One of the neat things about the holiday of Halloween is that it is so versatile. Where Christmas has a very straightforward story (Santa or Jesus, take your pick), Halloween can be many things. Some people see it as a sort of Mardi Gras atmosphere, where any kind of costumed theme is suitable. Others see it as a dark holiday, only suited gothic castles, zombies, and monsters. Still others celebrate it in the style of gory slasher movies, complete with deranged serial killers and buckets of blood. And then there is the non-scary childrens Halloween, where the ghosts are cute and jack-o-lanterns all have goofy grins.

This CD covers all these aspects of Halloween, which virtually garantees that no one will like every song. However, I would suggest that you pick and choose the tracks you like from the CD, as part of your overall Halloween soundtrack. You will probably find at least several tracks you like. And of you like Mannheim Steamroller, you will like most of them.

The second volume of the master Warner Bros. cartoon composer's work downplays the head-spinning montage of the first in favor of just-as-head-spinning complete scores. They aren't from the studio's best-known cartoons but from some of Stalling's most impressive tempo-warping, all-systems-go pieces, augmented by a few mini-pieces that illustrate the way he could transform barely familiar show tunes and classical themes into wild, rubbery jokes. Even without images, Stalling could make an orchestra suggest a "Flea-Ridden Sheep Dog" in 24 seconds flat and run enough changes on Stephen Foster's "Camptown Races" to match every mood in a Foghorn Leghorn cartoon. The head-snapping reversals of his scores anticipate much later avant-garde music. --Douglas Wolk

Are the names Mel Blanc, I. Freleng or Chuck Jones familiar to you? Then you will get a charge out of these albums as they remind you of Warner Brothers cartoons you saw. I even used these albums instead of "spooky music" for the trick-or-treaters at Halloween, and got appreciative comments from the parents who recognized the music. Definitely worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Better Stalling's CD.......2006-05-09

As well as Stalling Project Part I, These recordings are more modern fidelity, less classic and more musical techniques. The improvisations appreciate me more than Part I. I like all tracks especially one from "Zoom and Bored" Salute Maestro!!!!

3 out of 5 stars The Carl Stalling Project Volume 2.......2005-09-12

More music from Warner Brother Cartoons 1936 to 1958.
Carl Stalling was one of the foremost composers of music for cartoons and wrote virtually all of the scores for Warner Brothers cartoons from 1936 to 1958. This is a compilation of some complete soundtracks and other snippets. In my opinion, this disk is not quite as well done as "The Carl Stalling Project Volume I."

4 out of 5 stars A nice follow up.......2003-03-09

I really did like the slice-and-dice format of the first disc : I think it helped keep that cartoon zaniness without the visuals. I would recommend both volumes - I listen to them alot while I'm programming!

5 out of 5 stars Now, every time I watch cartoons, I listen to the music!.......2001-08-07

Carl Stalling. We all know who he is, but we don't know that we know. Who is he? The guy who did cartoon background music for Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies for more than 20 years, that's who. Maybe you're thinking, "Oh, come on! Cartoon background music??! How good could something so trivial be?!" The answer to that question is.. VERY. Very entertaining. I just love Carl Stalling's great "scores". When you take away the context of it's being CARTOON music and just sit and listen to the damn thing, it's WONDERFUL music in and of itself! He goes from violins and a piano playing "agitato" simultaneously to a single oboe note and back again in five seconds. Not only that. He does that and, as random as it may sound, he mannages to segue it together beautifully. Now, every time I watch cartoons, the thing I pay most attention to is what aural miracles Mr. Stalling sneaked in. Maybe, after listening to this, you will too. If anything will change after you listen to this, it would be that you'll never think of cartoon music as trivial again........That's a GOOD thing.

3 out of 5 stars A bit inconsistent, but valuable for Cult fans........2006-04-11

"Ghost Dance" collects the EP of the same name by the Death Cult-- the band that would eventually become the Cult, along with the followup single -- "Gods Zoo", and four performances from a BBC radio show. Singer Ian Astbury, having grown disinterested in the music of the Southern Death CUlt, formed the band with guitarist Billy Duffy (then part of a group called Theatre of Hate) and recruited guitarist-turned-bassist Jamie Stewart and drummer Ray Mondo. It was this quartet that recorded the "Ghost Dance" EP, with Mondo being replaced by Nigel Preston for the rest of the material on here. What separates this band from Astbury's previous project is the presence of Billy Duffy-- Astbury's presence and charisma is offset by an instrumentalist able to hold his own in the face of such a strong personality-- in Southern Death Cult, the band felt lopsided, but here there's more balance, and while the name is different (the album is credited to Death Cult), make no mistake: this is the early Cult material.

The early EP is a superb progression over the previous material-- while still seeped in the notions of gothic, Duffy's muscular presence lends the music to a more purposeful stance, and Astbury's confident swagger gave the band a great edge-- an explosive "Horse Nation" is the highlight here, powerful and energetic and like the rest of the material, propelled by Mondo's tribal drumming patterns that were so prevelent in post-punk at the time. "Gods Zoo", however, shows a real improvement-- aggressive, angular and explosive, it brines over from its straight rock beat and driving guitar lines, with Astbury over the top (in more ways then one). A pity the b-side couldn't perform better, the b-side retake of "Gods Zoo" suffers from bizarre backing vocals.

The BBC sessions are a bit of a curiosity-- remarkably Astbury sounds a bit like he's not quite as confident as he is on the studio material, although Southern Death Cult piece "A Flower in the Desert" gets an intriguing and powerful reading, with Duffy the sole accompaniment for Astbury (and on acoustic guitar). Somehow, when more exposed, Astbury turns out a superb performance, but the rest of the pieces seem a bit shakey.

The band would very shortly go on to higher heights on "Dreamtime" (after dropping the 'Death'), but this EP is well worth investigation. Recommended for fans of the Cult.

5 out of 5 stars Exhilarating classic.......2006-04-07

In my opinion, the (Southern) (Death) Cult at their most energetic, creative and politically charged peak. As far as recordings, my favorite of Ian and Billy's studio work. Long Live Death Cult! That's badddd medicine.....

3 out of 5 stars Horse Nation.......2006-02-18

If for no other reason, get this for the Death Cult version of
"Horse Nation," since this version is at a slightly quicker tempo
and has more of an edge than the version on the first album by The
Cult, DREAMTIME. Death Cult's "Ghost Dance" is also very good,
and an early version of "Rider in the Snow" (listed as "Too
Young"), destined for the DREAMTIME album, is very interesting with
entirely different lyrics (much like some of The Sisters of Mercy's
early versions of songs were).

5 out of 5 stars Better than the remake..........1999-09-13

Okay, so when they changed their name to just The Cult, they pretty much remade this album as "Dreamtime" and changed some of the titles by extending them. To me, while "Dreamtime" is a great album, this is the superior incarnation. Ghost Dance is just a great, eerie, western-sounding rock song that makes me wanna dance with unseen spirits. "A Flower in the Desert," "Horse Nation," "Butterflies," and "Rider in the Sky (Too Young)," (I'm not sure since I don't have "Dreamtime" anymore, but I think is the earlier version of "Rider in the Snow"), are the best songs on the album, as well as "Gods Zoo" and "Brothers Grimm." This is a great album that is filled with danceable rock with a ghostly twist that is enjoyable and frightening at the same time. No wonder they are classified as goth rock these days.

3 out of 5 stars Early Ian Astbury for you Cult enthusiasts........1999-06-03

If you like old Cult/Southern Death Cult or early gothic rock, this CD is a good one. It is not quite refined, but that is what makes it enjoyable. I have been a Cult fan since the release of Electric and this one takes you back to raw Ian vocals in the days before Ian/Billy/et.al. released "Dreamtime" in the UK as The Cult. I believe that "God's Zoo" is what got the ball rolling for The Cult and if you haven't heard it...have a listen. I just wish that The Cult would have integrated more of their early sounds into their more recent releases. Highly recommended for true Cult fans!!

Though it's haunted by goblins, ghosts, and monsters, it is hard to find anything very satanic in much of this music, except its fiendishly difficult pyrotechnics. Its sole purpose is to display Gil Shaham's devilishly dazzling virtuosity, glorious tone, elegance, humor, and bewitching charm. The only substantial piece is Tartini's "Devil's Trill Sonata," in Kreisler's edition complete with his long, diabolically strenuous cadenza; Shaham plays it very beautifully, with genuine, moving expressiveness. Elsewhere, his tongue is never far from his cheek, whether he is tossing off Bazzini's "Rondo de Lutins" perfectly at top speed, or having fun with the fireworks of Korngold's "Caprice fantastique," Sarasate's "Faust Fantasie," Grieg's "Puck" arranged by Joseph Achron, Paganini's Caprice No. 13, with a piano part by Robert Schumann, and Saint-Saëns' "Dance macabre," in which the pianist doubles for a whole orchestra. There are also transcriptions of passionately romantic pieces by Brahms and Mendelssohn, and excursions into different styles: William Bolcom's "Graceful Ghost" rag; "Transylvanian Lullaby" from John Morris's soundtrack for "Young Frankenstein" transcribed by Shaham's pianist, Jonathan Feldman; and the title piece, "Devil's Dance" arranged by John Williams from his soundtrack for "The Witches of Eastwick." You can safely invite this devil of a violinist into your home--he is excellent company. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Halloween Violin.......2005-10-17

While not always frightening as much as classical music with a Halloween theme, this is a fine recording to play at parties if the guests fancy this kind of music. The title refers to the Devil's Dance, for violin & piano from the film Witches of Eastwick, a work composed by John Williams. It is followed by A Transylvanian Rhapsody from the comic film Young Frankeinstein. The most famous piece of all "Danse Macabre" was Saint Saens' ghoulish work that nearly caused his mother a heart attack at the premire. Using stage effects like smoke and mist, Saint Saens had dancing skeletons waltzing on stage. The Devil Trill Sonata by Tartini has a frightening story behind it. It was rumored that the composer dreamt that the Devil gave him the score to this violin piece. It is played at an impossible speed and is one of the most difficult violin pieces ever composed. Only few violinists take on this piece. The music on this album is however not as scary as some other classical Halloween CD's out there but violin afficionados will be quite delighted.

4 out of 5 stars Puzzling choices, and not all that devilish.......2004-10-21

I'll say right off that Shaham's technique is top-notch, which is what one expects from such an album. And this is fine playing, with the violin and piano generally blending well.

But while this was clearly intended to be a "concept album," the artists/producers made several puzzling (and frustrating) choices that left me wondering just what the concept was supposed to be. The music is "devilishly difficult" at some times (the Tartini, for example), "creepy and eerie" at others (the "Danse macabre", others). However, several of the pieces are neither dazzingly difficult nor all that creepy - the Brahms and the Mendelssohn, for example, fail both definitions and, frankly, just don't seem to fit on this album. And then, there's the Paganini B-flat caprice - a solo violin piece transcribed for violin and piano, weakening the focus on violin virtuosity - while the Ysaye is left as a solo piece . . . well, a **piece** of a piece - we're given only a part of one movement of a four-movement work that is both very difficult AND built around that ultimate "creepy" theme, the "Dies Irae." Why only part of a single movement?

The net effect of all this is an album that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. It's almost as if someone committed to an album concept without making sure there was enough material to fill the album. Further quibbles: the violin is placed somewhat too far back, for my taste; on a virtuoso album, I want to be "up close" to catch all the nuances of the performance. And the balance between violin and piano is less than ideal at times, at least to my ear.

As I said, the playing is fine; it's the concept execution that falls short of "as advertised."

5 out of 5 stars Watch Out Where You Play This CD.......2002-05-17

As everyone says this is an extremely enjoyable disc. While it played fine in my ordinary CD player, the one in my computer couldn't handle it. Not only wouldn't it play, but it crashed the whole machine. Real deviltry at work!

5 out of 5 stars ... the best music ever recorded!.......2002-05-07

Sometimes I forget to breathe-this CD is so mind-blowing! This is the type of CD that you can't help but wave your hands around pretending to conduct the song!........ Ok.... Deep breathes.......o-o...I have to calm down! Now this CD features not just the best musicians but the best composers. They are John Williams (simply the best), Camille Saint-Saens (who composed one of the most famous "spooky" songs: Danse macabre!) ,and John Morris, you know.... Composed the music for YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, the funniest movie EVER! And guess what the theme song is on the CD!.. The charming yet spooky.........'Young Frankenstein': A Transylvania Lullaby. Hexenlied, one of my favorites, is by MR. Felix Mendelssohn (no he's not Felix the cat!)..........So...many....good.....songs....so.....Little--t-t-time. OK. It's time to wrap things up.....BUY THIS CD, YOU WON'T REGRET IT! :)

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2002-01-23

This CD has pretty interesting selection. My only qualm about it is sometimes it seems that the piano is competing for volume with the soloist, especially in Dans Macabre. This rendition is definitely not my favourite version. But some other gems make up for this, like Devils Dance, and La Ronde des Lutins. Devils dance is really well arranged and performed, and thats my favourite track on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore those naysayers!.......2007-04-08

Just listen... York is a very good composer (would John Williams and so many others record his pieces otherwise?); and yes the Bach piece is great, but the rest are more of what I have come to love of Andrew York.

5 out of 5 stars modern master.......2006-11-10

Andrew is the man. He operates on a different plain than other gutiarists and many of us wish we were there! This is a great batch of tunes with a variety of moods. Most classical guitar discs get momotonous after 5 tracks, but andrew keeps it going till the end. If you're looking for a recording of "sunburst" it's here and worth the price of the disc alone, but check out clips of "marley's ghost" and "evening dance," his other more popular works. a bach cello suite arranged for guitar makes this the perfect cd if you are just looking for a classical guitar cd for your collection.

1 out of 5 stars Windom Hill and Bach.......2006-10-01

The Bach was okay, but I could have done without the Windom Hill Sampler. York is not a composer, and should stick to playing.

4 out of 5 stars Important Bach Performance.......2005-09-29

This is a fine cd, including many of Andrew's original compositions. York studied cello as a youth. His performance of the Bach cello suite is the only one of which I am aware that plays only the notes actually written by Bach rather than supplying bass notes and ornaments. It is a very distinct, concentrated, almost primal version of the piece that is in all likelihood truer to Bach's intentions.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing follow-up.......2004-07-19

Unfortunately, after a ten year hiatus from solo guitar composing, York copped out with this release which he shamelessly fills with 21 minutes of a Bach cello suite which everyone else has recorded; and, the cello suite, doesn't fit with the rest of the CD.

Check out Denouement to hear how good York used to be.

A whole disc of choral arrangements of folk tunes could be too much--except in this case, the choir is the excellent Cambridge Singers, and the well-chosen arrangements cover a variety of composers and styles. Among the arrangers are Rutter, Vaughan Williams, and Daryl Runswick; the repertoire includes a hauntingly gorgeous "She moved through the fair" and 23 other selections. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Typical of Cambridge Singers--A good thing.......2005-06-14

This is very typical of John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers. Superbly performed, meaning not too forceful or too delicate. Diction and tone excellent. The folk song is not necessairly as entertaining or enjoyable as some of their other repertoire, nor is it as meaningful, but it still a powerful listening experience. The money for this recording will be well spent. The arrangements, well chosen, showcase beautiful, evocative choral singing. Vaughan Williams' arrangements are best, and he is well known for his arrangements of folk songs. Rutter's are good, but his harmonies are too often predictable or saccharine.

Best are: Dashing away with the smoothing iron (5), The Dark Eyed Sailor (10), The Girl I Left Behind Me (12), Just as the tide was flowing (13), O waly, waly (15)

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Lyrical Folk Melodies a la Rutter.......2000-09-28

This is a collection of Irish, Scottish, and English folk songs beautifully caressed by The Cambridge Singers under the masterful direction of John Rutter. He seems to possess an uncanny ability to create a uniquely lush and lyrical sound with a choir.

In listening to these songs, I find that they have the capacity to simultaneously evoke feelings of melancholy and joy, and, ultimately leave me to conclude that I have been visited by sheer beauty.

5 out of 5 stars The Lark touches my own heart!.......2000-04-27

In this review I am going to be exceptionally candid! This CD is a wonderfully arranged and performed set of traditional songs that will be treasured by any lover of this delicate yet vigorous music. I was a child of post war England in a poor suburb of South East England and our music teacher used to make us sing these songs which came from The National Song Book and from the folk song collectors, notably Vaughan Williams who put so much of this national flavor into his two collections, 'The English Hymnal' and 'Songs of Praise'. Before our generation the BBC had set up a radio programme called 'Listen with Mother' which we followed the established tradition of listening to them in those years of austerity (its funny you know, but we did not seem to get bored like they do today) on November evenings when the pea souper fogs swirled around the blue mercury lamps as the coal glowed orange in the grate. This music transported us to May mornings, harvesting, landscapes peopled with grenadiers, young love sick swains tip toeing in forbidden rooms at night etc. from these bleak afternoons and gave us the promise of the return of the season when we will be able to walk the Downs under blue skies once more. They also made us think that we were part of a continuum of being young, loving, having children and growing old and dying on this misty offshore island as hundred of generations had done before us. This self-consciousness of these characteristics that made us English and in their understated passion they revealed to us the promises of adulthood together with its victories, disillusionments and inevitable tragedies. Alas, the powers that dictate the conventional wisdom today have consigned these songs to the trash basket of history in the name of multiculturalism and globalism. The songs are not sung today as they appear too ethnocentric in a pluralistic society for our contemporary captains of society. This is a shame for those of us with no real English blood could still participate and enjoy these lovely songs that summon up the freshness of a spring morning or the pangs of a spurned lover in a few lines of beautifully stated verse. These are universal feelings that just happened to be in an English setting, which was where we were! The arrangements here are sublime, particularly 'She moved through the Fair' which always moves me to tears. The subject 'What are the English?' is a current topic for the UK is still settling down after Devolution and finding its own identity. They could do worse than playing 'The Lark in the Clear Air' to answer this question tout court. Please buy, but be warned: this stuff can be dangerously upsetting in its waves of nostalgia. It is like meeting a long lost (and forgotten) friend. That is an (almost lost) part of yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Rolicking English folk music.......1999-06-13

Beautifully sung under Rutter's usual masterful directions. Dashing Away with the Smoothing Iron and the Dark Eyed Sailor were my favorites.
