5 out of 5 stars BLOW YOUR SPEAKERS!.......2007-04-14

Manowar's first and what a great album. It was awesome to hear this for the first time today. Dark Avenger and Battle Hymn are terrific. I loved hearing the two songs that set the foundation of Manowar's triumphant sound. I love the other songs on the album as well. It has a great 80's sound that I enjoy. Hail To The Kings Of Metal!

5 out of 5 stars the debut of the kings of metal!.......2007-04-04

this is a great album and paved the way for a long list of metal bands that now sing about epic wars and vikings, the best songs of the album are(the album does not have any bad song anyway);metal daze, manowar, and the master piece battle hymn! this is true metal,so whimps and posers(a.k.a.fans of linkin crab and metallica)dont buy this album, for fans of real metal this is a great album to buy!

5 out of 5 stars manowar battlehymns.......2006-10-23

manowar debut,1982 no one sounded like this, manowar embraced and took metal to a whole new level-they were young and cocky and supremely talented, they were metal and proud of it, musicianship wise they were untouchable-lyric wise they were original and now often imitated,at that time no one sang about metal and fantasy ,you could sense the beleif and confidence they had in themselves, manowar has always been original and you can hear a lot of things that no one else was doing at the time in battle hymns, this is the recording that started it all, over the top guitar soloing, vocals and screaming that made you standup and listen with disbeleif,a bass sound that was truly original and heavy, you could actually hear every bass note in this recording, the weak link musicianship wise was probably the drumming a little generic in comparison to the caliber of the other musicians, ive neve heard a better narraration in music than orson welles part in dark avenger just one of the many original things about manowar, another original thing was the bass solo and the subject matters of the songs,so buy this cd and hear how it all started and see why manowar has one of the most loyal fanbases ever, and why they are still around 25 years later, always believe.

5 out of 5 stars "There's no charge for the haircut, and the bullets come free. Uncle sam sent a letter 'said, he got a mission for me".......2006-06-26

Rolling Stone Magazine reviewed this CD by simply writing one word, "Comicbook-rock". Battle Hymns is also one of the great metal CDs of all time.

Every song on this CD is really good. Orson Wells himself narrarates 'Dark Avenger' one of the great metal songs of all time. 'Fast Taker', 'Shell Shock', 'Death Tone', 'Battle Hymns' and possibly my favorite, 'Metal Daze' - "Own-ly, one, thing, really sets me free, heavy metal, loud as it can be", fill up the rest of the CD. Orson Wells would also narrarate 'Defender' another great great Manowar song found on 'Fighting the World', their most commercial sounding CD.

Manowar were probably influenced by Black Sabbath (like evey metal band somewhere along the way) tho they play, generally, a little faster. Manowar hail from NYC tho most people think they are European (where they are considerably more popular). They've written some truly great songs over the years, 'Dark Avenger', 'Defender', 'Mountains'. . . long live true metal.

I'm a huge Manowar fan and I'm not sure I would be if it wasn't for Battle Hymns. I might have picked up one of their other CDs and thought to myself ~'There's one or two songs on here I like but that's it'. Thank goodness for Battle Hymns introducing me to this great band and making me a believer.

4 out of 5 stars Such a beginning for the true kings of metal.......2006-01-04

Isn't as sophisticated as the later albums...but you can feel the power and the attitude since the beginning. The power of Eric's voice is as thunder killing as the very best of the Manowar albums. It is very Heavy Metal. If you are a true heavy metal fan...this is a great way to start Manowar. Not for beginners...not for commercial music, only true dealers of the power metal in your head.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

5 out of 5 stars A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

1 out of 5 stars not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect starter CD!.......2005-02-12

I'm surprised that no one has reviewed this CD yet. Released in conjuction with the Nationally-released PBS documentary "America's Choir" - this album is a perfect starting place for people who wish to have a sampler of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Serving as both a latter-day "greatest hits" and a stand alone album, this CD gathers six tracks from the Choir's recently released albums "Consider The Lilies," "Spirit Of America" and "Peace Like A River" and adds TEN brand new tracks recorded specially for this project, creating a perfect sampler of both the Choir's magnificent history and it's current sound. It highlights the strengths of the Choir's repetoire, from well-known hymns ("Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing") to patriotic standards ("Battle Hymn Of The Republic") to folk songs ("Shenandoah," "Bound For The Promised Land") and even some surprises, like the traditional Welsh anthem "O Home Beloved" and the "Fugue In C Major (Jig)" for organ and orchestra. A wonderful, wonderful CD, with startling changes in mood and tempo, but with the unifying artistry of the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Sqare.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Album Description

Haysi Fantayzee were formed in 1981 by fashion photographer Kate Garner, former Animal Magnet member Paul Caplin and Jeremy Healy, a well-known face on London's club scene. Together they set about injecting a sense of fun and adventure into the music scene, wearing outlandish, self designed costumes and dreadlocks, and writing songs that married sexual subversion with deliberately disposable and cocksure dayglo pop. Their ''Dickensian Rasta'' look was an immediate hit and saw their debut single 'John Wayne Is Big Leggy' rise to #11 in the national charts. In their brief career they would also enjoy chart success with 'Holy Joe' and 'Shiny Shiny'. All three hits are reprised on this CD, as is their sole album, Battle Hymns For Children Singing. The package also features a host of bonus tracks, remixes, and sleevenotes written with the co-operation of both Healy and Garner. The former went on to become one of the UK's most successful DJs, while the latter is an accomplished and in-demand photographer for artists including Sinead O'Connor, Bjork, David Bowie and others.

5 out of 5 stars Haysi Fantayzee were the rarest flower that ever bloomed.......2007-07-15

For those of you that never heard of this short lived curiosity known as Haysi Fantayzee, they sound like a trio of cool cartoon-reggae-hillbillies performing in the French Quarter in New Orleans. Vocal swapping(nic nak patty wak)chants to very infectious quirky grooves.
A knee slapping, ho-down circus on pixie dust. Its too bad they disbanded after one album. They were 80's British Blitz Kids who created a look that that was supposedly stolen by Boy George. If you like Bananarama, Funboy Three, Bow Wow Wow, Aqua and the Beverly Hillbillies than you will probably like this also.

1 out of 5 stars ripped off yet again.......2007-07-07

OK so this is the second time I have ordered a Haysi Fantayzee CD thinking I would finally get the extended version of Shiny Shiny...but NOOOOO this CD contains another version made by some second rate tape editor who just fiddled a bit with the single version and added an extra minute of guff repeated over and over.....YECH!.....the only place so far I have found the real extended version is on an Aussie DVD called Countdown-The Wonder Years. So it looks like the real 12" of Shiny Shiny is lost to us all. Shame on the person who put this CD out, it is plastic landfill. Sad customer from OZ, Tom Wynn.

4 out of 5 stars Is this REALLY better than the 2000 release?.......2007-05-25

First off, about the sound- I never really had much complaint about the sound on the first release. It was so thrilling to hear these songs on CD for the first time I doubt anything could have made it less than exciting for me. Perhaps it's all relative to one's own tastes, but I really don't see that the original needed much improvement. But, neither does this one.

Secondly, I enjoyed the debut of the previously unheard demo-remix of Shiny Shiny. It would be nice to have included the original UK 12" mix of it as well, but this new release also does not feature that version. It's the US RCA company version which is actually just an exercise in tape editing and not really much of a remix. It disappointed on vinyl, so it can't be much more exciting on CD. This does have one extra song, though- the B-side of "Sister Friction" called "Jimmy Jive", which is a dub remix of the album track with a similar name.

The booklet of this version is very pretty, and I really enjoyed the updates on all members, as well as the track- by - track reminisces from Kate & Jeremy. The discography seems to have been lifted from the Culture Club "Chameleon Files" website without any credit given (or correction of errors). Two of the later 12" releases are not included in this discography- the promo only one-sided "In The Mix" 12" and the Italian only 12" of "Chizoola / Here Comes The Beast".

All in all, this is a great CD to have if you never found a copy of the 2000 release (and certainly a better buy than the near $100 price tags it was getting on ebay!), but if you have that release, this one offers few improvements, outside of the booklet. It's perfect for completists like myself, and any one who wishes the Haysi Fan Clubee was still around.

5 out of 5 stars Madness and insanity, presented the way it should be.......2007-04-21

Back in 2000 when the first CD issue of "Battle Hymns" was released, I was so disappointed at the poor quality that plagued the CD; improper song editing, incorrect versions, low fidelity on a number of tracks, etc, etc... Having done audio remastering as a hobby for a couple of years by that point, I thought how much I would have liked to remaster the CD properly for release. I had no expectation that 7 years later, I would have that opportunity.

It's surprising that a short lived near-novelty group could have such an enduring legacy. The classic singles "Shiny Shiny" and "John Wayne is Big Leggy" seem to have never been forgotten. These two singles were sizeable hits in the UK, though here in the U.S. they remained cult classics and old MTV memories. Regardless, the music has stayed alive for some reason.

"Battle Hymns for Children Singing" is a really entertaining album that people generally either love or absolutely hate, and I can understand both views to a degree. Obviously, I'm a fan of the music, but daily doses could drive one to insanity (which would be a short trip for this reviewer). Visually, Haysi Fantayzee looked like a slightly off kilter Boy George, where as musically they had more in common with Bow Wow Wow, yet still remained an entity all their own. While the original idea of the group sounded like fun and insanity was their goal, by the time of their final single, "Sister Friction", it was clear they were trying to be more serious and "professional". It didn't work and the single failed, followed by the demise of the group shortly there after. Thankfully, what was left behind was a wonderfully unique bit of fun and nonsense that still retains a strong fanbase a quarter of a century after its release.

When I was given the green light to begin remastering the album and bonus tracks to CD, I took great care in ensuring the songs would bang into one another as on the original album, as opposed to the bad fade out/in style done with the previous CD. And I was also pleased to finally offer the actual 12" mix of "Shiny Shiny" (regardless of what the previous reviewer incorrectly states), as the original CD had some unknown version that had more in common with the Bon Temps version of the song than the well known classic single. I chose to use the U.S. album track listing, as I preferred the minor alterations to it in comparison to the UK issue. Besides, the inner sleeve lyric scans I provided coincided with this running order.

I always love the concept of including original record sleeves for inclusion in the booklet, as I've done with the Mobiles and Artery CD's I worked on for Cherry Red, so I provided all four single picture covers, a selection of record labels, as well as the original LP cover. I would have included the picture discs as well, though I did not have them available to me. The 20 page booklet is extremely well done, complete with full discography, history of the band, as well as comments from both Healy and Garner. I was very satisfied with the final product, as I was able to correct all of the mistakes made the first time 'round. I expect this version should be available for some time.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Gospel Album by a Classical Singer!.......2005-11-07

I am SO happy that this has finally been re-released onto CD! I have known this album for the last 10 years, as a friend of ours gave us a copy, first on cassette tape, which we wore out, and then on CD. I have played it for just about anyone who will sit still long enough to listen, and I count it among my favorite recordings of all time! I have other classical gospel recordings by some of Ms. Quivar's colleagues, and while I also enjoy them, they simply are not in the same league as this recording!

Florence Quivar is, quite simply, perfect in this recording. She has the perfect mix of classical and traditional gospel technique, and performs every song on this album with an astonishing range of colors, ability and with so much feeling that I am moved every time I listen. I am a classical singer myself, and this album is a true inspiration to me. It is a document of what singing really can be about, a magical fusion of sound, word, emotion and soul! I can recommend this for both the classical and the gospel enthusiast, but know many people, who really are neither, who just recognize and respond to the powerful, emotional, fantastic singing in this album!

5 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect!.......2007-03-06

I find this CD so frustrating! The Lord's Prayer was the first LP I ever purchased, and it's impact and beauty have never left me. I had all but given-up every seeing it on CD until this reissue came along. Both LPs on one CD, how can you go wrong? You can't actually UNLESS you want the complete first LP. They left out ONE SELECTION ("O, My Father") - probaby a time consideration. In any event, two great LPs, the remastering isn't much. It pales against the original LPs, but its great to have most of the albums.

5 out of 5 stars Re-released at Last!!!.......1999-02-01

I have been waiting to find this on CD for years, and am so happy to have found it. One of the best albums of religious music ever. The interpretations are simple and exquisite, the phrasing clear, and each choice harmonious and moving.

Now if you'd just offer the sequel, "The Lord's Prayer II"...

5 out of 5 stars probably the best of the MTC recordings - A REAL CLASSIC.......1999-01-16

I have been listening to this recording in both its vinal and cd form since about 1966. I think it is the best of the MTC recordings of religious music with a good cross section of both Mormon and Mainline music.

2 out of 5 stars Oh crap...a mix I wanted is not here............2006-02-09

THIS CD WAS SOMETHING I THOUGHT I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE BECAUSE THE 12" MIX OF SHINY SHINY WAS A GREAT DANCE TRACK BACK IN 1983 WHEN I WAS A WORKING D.J.

BUT THE AUSTRALIAN 12" MIX WE HAD IS NOT ON THIS C.D. BUT THE INFERIOR AND LAME "DANCE MIX" WHICH DOESN'T REALLY RESEMBLE THE WONDERFUL CLIVE WHITSTANLEY/ALAN LANGER 12" REMIX WE HAD IN OZ.

I WAITED 4 YEARS TO GET THIS C.D. SECOND HAND AND IT HASN'T GOT THE ONE TRUE GENIUS 12" REMIX....WHAT WERE "RAZOR AND TIE" THINKING WHEN THEY COMPILED THIS C.D.????

"JOHN WAYNE IS BIG LEGGY" REMIX IS ALSO JUST A PALE REMIX OF THE ONE WE HAD IN AUSTRALIA BACK IN THE 1980S.

IF ANYONE CAN FIND THE "REAL REMIXES" OF SHINY SHINY ON A C.D. SOMWHERE IN THE WORLD PLEASE CONTACT ME AT: TOMWYNN007 HOTMAIL COM

I'M SO SAD, I PAID $82 AMERICAN DOLLARS FOR THIS PILE OF LESS TAHN AVERAGE FILLER.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good, for the most part.......2002-01-05

Only one album? They had enough craziness for at least several!

I'd admit it, this CD needs some getting used to, but once that is done, you'll like most of the songs. I still don't know about that "John Wayne" one and "Here Comes the Beast" though. However, Jeremy and Kate can rival other New Wave artists.

My favorites: "Holy Joe", "Sister Friction", "Jimmy Jive Jive", and of course, the one hit in the United States, "Shiny Shiny". Track 15 is funny to listen to at first, Jeremy and Kate can be very silly at the same time.

Recommend for big New Wave fans.

5 out of 5 stars Ahead of their time.......2001-08-29

No one really knew what to make of Haysi Fantayzee when they hit the airwaves in the early 1980s, and I'm not so sure we're any better off now. Take one part synth-pop, two parts new wave, and a dash of country thrown in here and there for good measure, and top it all off with some Buffalo Gal-esque duds, and that's Haysi Fantayzee.

Interestingly enough, I think most of this cd stands up reasonably well to the test of time. "Shiny Shiny" and "John Wayne is Big Leggy" are just plain fun, without a lot of to 80s musical trappings you find in, say, Duran Duran or OMD, that make you wince and wonder "Good lord, what were we thinking?"
Best of all, I can finally stop guarding my prized, very well-worn cassette version.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY! FANTAYZEE ON CD!!!.......2001-01-21

Thank you thank you thank you to whoever was responsible for getting this 80's masterpiece onto CD! I've been waiting for years for this. Listening to it today, it sounds like it could have been recorded last week..... just as fresh and new as it was in 1983! It's a quirky, trippy piece with an odd timeless quality about it. Totally unique, totally catchy..... you'll be singing "I Lost My Dodi" in the shower for sure!!!!

5 out of 5 stars No one got it back then. Here's another chance.......2000-05-24

For those who have stumbled onto this, you have been blessed. This album has been ridiculously difficult to find. Nobody in 1983, not even now has come close to the purple-punk-hillbilly mushroom trip that a beautiful, leggy, Black-Dreadlocked hair chic that ran around in a bikini and thigh high go-go boots with her nutty sidekick accompished 18 years ago. These guys experimented with turntable scratching, Dub, reggae, electronic and fiddles on a post-punk, nihilistic stage 18 years ago. I think they scared everybody back then with their bubbly-happy death dance. This album is must is you are at all curious of musicians that were unbelivably ahead of their time. would somebody email me what the hell happened to them? I heard one of them died. I gotta have the scoop : chris_ginsburg@hotmail.com -thanks

5 out of 5 stars True Hardcore.......2005-01-02

For those that seek true, old fashioned hardcore - buy this album along with anything else by Born Against.

The world has come to describing this crap that sounds like a mix between slayer (don't get me wrong, gotta love Slayer) and the cure 'hardcore'. I will not sit here and list all of the bands that now posses this label, but for those who are interested in what REAL hardcroe is, do yourself a favor and go back to the source of where it started, and buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars This is the greatest hardcore band, ever........2004-07-18

No, seriously.

I haven't paid attention to this music in 14 years or so, but I recently unearthed a tape with a few songs from Born Against on it and I forgot just how incredible it all was, all that time passed and chrous for "Mary and Child" still sets my blood to boiling.

I guess the only people who'll ever see this are other 30-something dinosaurs like myself, so I'm likely just preaching to the choir, but on the rare chance you're someone who wishes they could find some of the best tunes of true oldschool hardcore, you could do alot worse than starting off with Born Against.

5 out of 5 stars HAHAHA!.......2003-03-24

Before I review this, I want to point out something I find hilarious. On the top part where it says "other people who shopped for this, also bought these," they have a bunch of patriotic music compilations included. Can you imagine the look on those people's faces when they put in their new Born Against CD, looking forward to a few patriotic hymns, then they get this? Wöööööööööö!

Anyways, Born Against was a really good political hardcore punk band from New York. It's a great album. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars May come to some fans as a shock.......2004-02-16

Manowar, the band you either love or hate. I personally love Manowar and they are one of my most favorite bands. When I finally came around to buying Manowar's 1982 debut album Battle Hymns I had heard almost all of there latter albums. So initially Battle Hymns came as a shock to me. Not because its bad but because it was different. Though similar to their second album, Battle Hymns sounded very different from the Manowar I knew. Not near as fast, not nearly as well produced, and extremely dated sounding. Does it make it bad? Oh hell no. This is still Manowar all the way through, just at their young roughly produced best. Though they would go on to do better material, Battle Hymns still stands up to be a classic in their long catologue (This band is actually older than Metallica!). So if your a fan and haven't heard Battle Hymns yet, just don't expect Kings of Metal and you will end up loving it.

4 out of 5 stars Dated but oh so good.......2002-12-08

The only other Manowar album I own is Kings Of Metal, which I got before this one. I have to say that at first I was disappointed with this album. Kings Of Metal was faster and more refined, resembling power metal. The music here is significantly slower, resembling a cross between AC/DC and early Iron Maiden. Getting used to the sound was what was needed. However, I have now totally fallen for this album. Strong guitar and bass work, fantastic vocal delivery and quite simply memorable songs are what make this so good.

I now consider Eric Adams to be one of the finest vocalists I've ever heard. He was great on Kings Of Metal and he is great here. He has a fantastic range, a powerful delivery and a fierce passion. Joey DeMaio is also one of the finest bass players in metal, alongside Steve Harris, John Myung and Cliff Burton. His style and sound fits the music perfectly and he doesn't merely follow the guitar (listen to the sound of that bass at the beginning of Fast Taker). Not to mention guitarist Ross Friedman, AKA Ross The Boss. He not only has a good technical skill, but his solos also compliment the songs brilliantly. He has a very bluesy style that is not normally associated with hard rock/metal.

Further, the lyrics here are better than those on Kings Of Metal, dealing with Vietnam veterans rather than motorbikes, sex slaves and wars in the name of metal. Not to mention that this is on the whole less cheesy. Yes, it does sound dated and no, this isn't for every rock/metal fan (especially if you prefer power metal to traditional 80s heavy metal), but on the whole this is a strong debut.

5 out of 5 stars Gospel of Metal........2002-06-28

I got this album when it first came out and I've worshipped it ever since. Yes, Manowar are cheesy at times and even silly but they are great. They have played it straight for decades, never blinking and while they put out some horrid songs "Fighting the World and Blow Your Speakers" this first album is full of gems.

I think Manowar was better when R. Friedman aka Ross the Boss did more writing but we all know Joey DeMaio (the most underappreciated rock bassist) is a control freak egomaniac and limited Ross' input. Let's not forget Ross' great guitar work with the Dictators, where he shone even brighter.

Battle Hymns has never been surpassed by Manowar, nor most bands, it's an epic masterpiece which had their most intelligent lyrics (Death Tone, Shellshock) and set up the notch for fast fingers (William's Tale) and I was fortunate to see them on the Battle Hymns tour. They are ALWAYS great live.
HAIL HAIL HAIL!!!

2 out of 5 stars Well, what can be said about this band...?.......2002-04-20

THis band is just junk. Dressed like "warriors", arrogant and talentless, full of prejudice against everything.. BaTTLE>. is one of their worst albums ever.

4 out of 5 stars A good cd with a GREAT end.......2001-09-23

This cd is really a mixed bag. Songs like Death Tone, Fast Taker, and Shell Shock aren't bad, but they aren't all that special. But then songs like Dark Avenger, Manowar, and Battle Hymns are absolutely incredible. Highly advised for all fans of Manowar, newcomers may want to start with something else, Hail To England perhaps? (Its my favorite). In response to the review below that says too many songs were written by R. Freidman ands not the band, R. Friedman is Ross Friedman, a.k.a. Ross The Boss, Manowar's longtime guitarist. Anyway, Battle Hymns is a good album with 3 phenomenal songs at the end, hence the 4 stars.
