Classic Cali Punk-Metal Synthesis.......2006-06-01
Agent Orange (they came from Orange County) weren't punk, weren't metal, and weren't surf revival. Yet they had bleak near-metal outlook and riffage a bit above punk's two chord grind, speed like punk and attitude & angst like punks, and they dug classic surf instrumentals. This is Underground at its best. Agent Orange, for all the bleakness of their lyrics, were much lighter than other bands of the Hardcore Punk scene (that's the genre they were lumped in with, but like I said, they weren't punk). They had a typical dude persona that was covered by the anger of their singer/guitarist Mike Palm's songs.
Living In Darkness was originally an EP (tracks 2-9 on the curent CD). In '92, it was released with new tracks (some of them from the 1979 sessions that earned them their contract). "Bloodstains," with Mike's anger, its simple chaotic riff and the dread-surf solo made it a fine opener. "Everything Turns Grey" is classic punk style stuff with a quick, simple yet effective rapidfire solo by Mike. "No Such Thing" has an awesome metal riff (people need to hear this, its a heavy like Metallica riff), and "America" is classic "Americanan is gay" sentiment. Living In Darkness has three surf instrumentals from the sixties also. All are done with righteous agression and driving force. The songs are "Miserlou" by Dick Dale, "Pipeline" by The Chantays, and "Mr. Moto" by The Bel-Airs. A radio interview is also included. The boys sound like Average Joes on weed. Classic.
Agent Orange was a big influence on The Offspring, and you can tell. These fun but fierce Underground kings were pretty darn good, and need to be known more. Living In Darkness is fine food for your player. If you're 16 and you wanna bang your head....bang your head to this.
How underrated can a band be...........2006-04-21
when an album that is far better than anything from the 80's barely gets any recognition? Agent Orange is one of the best bands that never got the credit they deserved. Buy this album if you even kinda like surf-punk, such as that "Wipeout" song from the Surfaris (note that every song on this album is by far better than "Wipeout")
Oh, if you want a song-by-song for this album, simply give every song a 10. It's that good :)
So so.......2006-04-08
Not a bad album, but not all that great either. Bloodstains is a classic, but the rest of the album is listenable, but mediocre.
When I refer to Agent Orange, everyone assumes I'm talking about the stuff they used in 'Nam..........2006-02-10
I was fortunate to talk to Mike Palm at an Agent Orange show in Oklahoma City, and we got to discussing guitars. I won't divulge the secrets of his awesome surf-rock guitar sound, but I will say that he was very nice, introduced me and my friends to the rest of the band (the drummer let me sign the cast on his foot with which he proceeded to bang the holy sh*t out of his drums all night), and proceeded to put on a genuine punk rock show worthy of their legend. Viva Agent Orange!
P.S. This album is really grood. I mean, good. And great. Great and good.
EXCITING SEMINAL O.C. PUNK.......2005-06-03
I really didn't expect this album to sound this powerful !!! While it's true the music is surf-tinged,the overall sound is a storming punk/hc one with massive riffs and a skull splitting guitarwork, making this cd a nice addition to anyone fond of more ferocious punk rock.No resemblances to the Beach Boys as I was told, dude !!!!! The remastered sound is gorgeous except for the drums that are a lilttle muddled up,but hey, this is originally a low budget punk recording,so what the f@kk !!!!!.As bonus tracks 3 non album tracks from 91 have been added, along with some studio live songs, all very nice and coherent with the album.

You can do better.......2007-05-17
Don't get me wrong based on the title, I love this album, and everything Sodom recorded. Just like South of Heaven, Countdown to Extiction, Practice What you Preach and The Black Album, people thought this was the best album based on album sales, where in reality, it was the albums before these ones that were the great ones. Agent Orange is a fantastic album, but it is no Tapping the Vein, or Persecution Mania. Sodom is the greatest thrash band ever because they have never drastically changed their sound. Sure they got heavier for Tapping the Vein, and even slowed down a bit for Sodom, but don't be fooled by record sales. If you like thrash metal buy any Sodom album. If you like death metal, buy Tapping the Vein, Masquerade in Blood, or In the Sign of Evil/Obsessed by Cruelty. I f you like black metal, buy In the Sign of Evil/Obsessed by Cruelty. Sodom is the perfect band and this album is brilliant, but if its your first, get Persecution Mania, or Tapping the Vein. This band is great and all shall kneel before Sodom.
SODOM'S CRY OUT AGAINST WAR!!!.......2007-04-10
This my third Sodom album and once again they BLEW ME AWAY! Inside the CD sleeve are written the words "This album is dedicated to all pepole-soldiers and civilians-whom died by senseless aggressions of wars all over the world". That says it all folks!
Thanks Sodom but............2006-11-18
Sodom is one of the major contributors to the Thrash Metal scene of the 1980's, and is a major influence of many of todays younger Metal bands. Its funny because I had never gotten into thier material from the 1980's, and that is someone who only listened to Metal at that time. Hearing all that I did about the band, I decided to go with "Agent Orange" and I came away very dissapointed. Believe me, I love old Metal, with the likes of Kreator, Overkill, Venom, Possessed, and Slayer. I was expecting a hellva lot more from the band, and what I got was three solid songs, and the rest seems like it was to "Sissy" for the type of band that Sodom is. When you look at German Metal, such as Kreator, "Pleaure to Kill" Rips at you for the entire CD, and never slows up. "Agent Orange" seems to go into almost a "hair metal" type of sound after the first three songs, and that just doenst cut the mustard. I am sure that mayne some of thier other albums are better, but "Agent Orange" just isnt that good. Thanks Sodom for your musical contributions, but I have to say that "Agent Orange" is a below average album.
Well-Executed Thrash Classic.......2006-09-11
Agent Orange is not only one of the worst attack methods used in the Vietnam war, but also an imprint in the later 80's metal scene.
The 80's heavy metal scene had its share of less-known bands, and Sodom was one of them. "Agent Orange" is basically a thrasher's paradise. Much like Kreator and Destruction, Sodom is a band that plays head-on thrash metal from the country that basically screwed the Jewish community over during WWII. Angelripper is an agressive vocalist whose style fits the music well. Guitar work is great. Just pure thrash that fits the style of early Metallica and Exodus well.
If you love thrash, you need this album. Some of the most raw music that you'll ever hear is on this album.
Virtually perfect thrash album........2006-05-30
When I first started listening to metal, one of the bands that I was warned to stay away from was the German thrash trio Sodom. I was told that their music was too impossibly fast and extreme to be even mildly comprehensible. The first thing I did, of course, was listen to the first Sodom album I could find, which was 1989's "Agent Orange." In all fairness, I think the individual who warned me against Sodom was referring to the band's earlier works such as "In The Sign of Evil" and "Obsessed by Cruelty," since "Agent Orange" represents something of an aesthetic refinement of the German thrash movement that Sodom helped to create; the music is still fast enough to tear your face off, but the overall emphasis seems to have shifted from speed to fullness of sound as evidenced by a greater role for the bass and a reliance on powerchords in lieu of quickly jumping from one fret to another with insane tremolo picking (not to mention improved production values).
"Agent Orange" begins with the title track, which is one of Sodom's best songs as well as a thrash classic in its own right. In some superficial respects, it resembles the more commercialized style of mid-1980s speed metal (as exemplified by albums such as "Master of Puppets") with few of the same neoclassical pretensions of that era. The result is a simpler, more streamlined metal sound that is ironically less accessible than its American and British forebearers. The frentic thrash tempo only increases after the title track, moving into the panicked "Tired and Red" and the sexually inappropriate "Incest." The epic thrash ballad "Remember the Fallen" (also a classic track) slows things down a bit but the pace afterward is relentless with "Magic Dragon" and "Ausgebombt" being the highlights of the second half of the album. Tom Angelripper's gnarled voice is the perfect complement to the hellishly fast proceedings on "Agent Orange," riding above the music like a tactical bombing raid and more than slightly resembling Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead. The theme of the Vietnam War introduced on "Agent Orange" would be revisited on Sodom's 2001 album "M-16," although "Agent Orange" is the superior album in just about every way. This is an essential thrash album that no metal fan ought to be without.

OLD SCHOOL.......2005-12-23
I remember buying this album in the early 80's.
I liked to skate around the university district
(Seattle)and browse record stores.
I knew nothing about the band, but bought
the album anyway. I really liked the
album then, and now.
I guess these guys have moved up
in the world (Tony Hawk skate game).
Doesn't Hold Up Over Time.......2005-06-10
It pains me to say this, but this music just doesnt hold up over time. I first heard this album
as a 13 or 14 year old skater punk. 15+ years later I decided to take a stroll down memory lane
and got this CD. It just doesnt give me the same chills I remember it giving me as a young kid.
In its defense, I guess it is difficult, if not impossible, to relive those teenage years. Alas,
it is time to get back to reality.
Get your dates straight.......2004-12-15

Bitchin' Summer EP (Posh Boy) 1982
When You Least Expect It ... EP (Enigma) 1984

"Out of Limits" is amazing. If this cd had nothing but Celine Dion with "Out of Limits" as the secret track it would still be worth owning. Even better go look for the vinyl, spin it on your Close n' Play, and make your daddy proud.
A worthy return to the original sound.......2001-11-25
After monkeying around with a more contemporary sound on "This is Voice," Mike Palm and company returned to the studio and put out this EP that has a comparable sound to "Living in Darkness."
Clocking in at 15 minutes it's a shame that AO never returned to this sound in the studio with its original members.

This is a definate must-have, along w/This is the voice. While The "latest and greatest" is mostly rehashed stuff w/o Scott or James, do yourself a favor and listen to the originals.

Pulling in with AO.......2003-10-13
What a great 2 disc set !!!
This collection goes through the late part of Agent Orange's early days, plus the entire middle of the band's career. While not as rough as the stuff that you will find on the "Living In Darkness" disc, there is plenty of great material here and fun to listen to.
There is nothing new here, I had all these recordings on vinyl, but for me it is a great chance to get to listen to stuff that I haven't heard in years (since my last turn table blew up in the early '90's), and bring together my Agent Orange collection....
Disc 1 is the "This Is The Voice" LP recording, along with the "When You Least Expect It...." EP, and the very hard to find "Secret Agent Man/Shakin All Over" 7".
The second disc is the "Real Live Sound" recording, one of the few live recordings you will find of these guys, where they hit a bunch of the classics, plus some cool covers.
A definate "must have" for ANY Agent Orange fan.
3 for 1.......2003-07-14
what I can make of this it is all the restless recordings remastered which is great If you don't already have them disc one is when you least expect it ep and this is the voice disc two contains the live cd real live sound all three were excellent then and should sound great remastered especially the this is the voice album !!!!!I wish they would put out new music because I've always liked them but this is good for anyone who likes old school punk /surf

Amazing record, TERRIBLE SOUND QUALITY!.......2005-06-15
This is hands-down the best Agent Orange album. Unfortunatly, the label really screwed up on the mastering of this disc. It is almost unlistenable in it's current form on this CD. It's not the production,(I have it on LP and CASS as well) it's the mastering. I would recomend getting "Sonic Snake Sessions" instead. It has the original recordings from this disc all remastered. You will have to pay a higher price, and considering the mediocre bonus tracks (an EP and a not so hot live album) it does kinda feel like a rip-off. But hey, you have no choice.
This has power ... if you can stand volume at 10........2004-01-25
Living in Darkness has a raw power to it that leaves your ears and mind tired (a good thing).
This album would do the same if not for the poor sound quality. Same driving guitars and catchy sound. THe problem - the sound is distant. Similar to PJ Harvey's CD Chronology - Dry (raw, piercing sound, which rates a top 5 CD in my collection) to Rid of Me (which is so distant and non-motivating it makes you wonder what was going on in the studio).
This is still one of my favorite CD's (where Rid of Me is not). If you have a good sound system and can crank it up, it still rates as a great CD that is a classic of my collection.
Sak, you're a tool........2003-10-20
Great album, great band. Yes, it's old. That is a good thing.
Great music - Poor sound quality.......2001-09-05
I actually rate 5 stars to the band, but only 1 star to the CD quality. I bought this CD because I own the album (33RPM record (yeah, I'm old)) but I wanted to listen to it on CD. The music on this CD is great (the band is great), but the quality of the CD is very poor. You have to turn the volume way up and it still isn't very loud and/or clear - obviously not a fault of Agent Orange. I think the producers could have done a better job re-releasing this on CD. Buy it to listen to Agent Orange, but beware of the poor quality recording.
DUDE, THEY JAMMED!!.......2000-08-16
They were the ultimate skater band back then!! I wish they made more music!!!

Nice snapshot of a great local band.......2006-11-18
I saw Agent Orange about 3-4 times in 1986-87, and while this is more power pop than what I remember...IT DOES still have the feeling/guitar sound of what I recall. It does sound like there might be audience track here-but who cares. The band sounds great. Compare with Bloostained Hitz-much more pure Agent Orange. I'd love to see Mike release a live recording from The Music Machine in that later 80's period---Gibson SG and Marshall amps!!!!!!
Major Label screws up again.......2003-12-08
I'll have to agree with the previous reviewer. I'm not intimately familiar with Agent Orange, but this is anything but "Real Live Sound". From the faked roadie intro to the added screaming to the studio recorded between song banter, this is a prime example of how major record labels manipulate perfectly good bands. Given that is was recorded in 1991, during the heyday of the cocaine and glam fueled pop metal era (in L.A., no less) it's a wonder that it isn't worse. Some of the songs are good, however, but to put them into rotation on my pirate radio station I had to do some pretty heavy editing. Is Restless Records still in business? They shouldn't be.
Raw, but with lots of emotion........2002-11-30
OK, yes this album is raw and yes Mike's vocals are a little harsh in some places, but it is a great live album for the diehard fan of old school punk. In fact, a lot of the songs are different versions then the studio ones, and sound very cool. For you old schoolers out there Social Distortions Mommy's Little Monster was not that great a recording and Ness was a sloppy guitar player back then, but the album is a punk rock classic. I'm not saying this is a classic but it IS an album to be appreciated and well worth four stars.
I'd hate to see real fake sound.......2002-03-21
Agent Orange's only live album "Real Live Sound" is a sign of the times it was recorded in. 1990. L.A. The Roxy....The first thing that came to my mind just by looking at the cover and liner notes was the pop sound of the moment in 1990...pop heavy metal. And guess what? This is Agent Orange doing its best impersonation of a pop metal act.
All the classic elements are here. A Drum solo. Cheerleading by Mike Palm. Half-assed guitar playing. What seems to be lots of fake sounding female screams. And an intro by a deep-voiced roadie. As a former recovering metal junkie...I was thinkin' gawd I'm not listening to W.A.S.P. Live in the Raw..Am I? But as I listened more and more I could tell that this was not the band that laid down one of the best albums I have ever heard at the beginning of the 80s. This was something KISS would do...lie down some tracks live and polish them up. The first studio album with warts and all was more "live" than this mess.

Don't let a little re-recording scare you: BUY IT!.......2006-08-03
Okay, the purists are correct in that re-recording your old hits is nothing but a shameless money-making scheme and "tampers" with the greatness of the originals.
Further, this is basically the main guy from the original Agent Orange with two new guys playing--you guessed it--new recordings of some of their best known songs.
Don't let those facts stop you from buying a fantastic album.
Sure, the songs are new studio versions of Agent Orange originals, but that doesn't mean they aren't great in their own right. The album rocks from start to finish, and almost has a "live in the studio" sound for those that like raw, unadorned surf-punk style tunes.
So, okay, for the guilty...yes, you will have to buy Living in Darkness and Sonic Snake Session just so you have the originals.
These two CD's pretty much cover the "original" Agent Orange's best known releases.
Then I suppose you won't have to feel guilty for loving Blood Stained Hitz.
The rest of us who long for new Agent Orange material will be more than satisfied with this collection of rawer, less polished versions of Agent Orange's best songs.
Highlight: Bite the Hand that Feeds (instrumental) is a much more rocking and less "produced" version than the original.

Just plain AWESOME!.......2004-06-23
Blood stained hitz is a perfect collection of re-recorded Agent Orange songs. The new Everything Turns Grey is easily one of the best songs ive heard in years. If you're new to Agent Orange buy this cd first then buy Living in Darkness.
Buy the originals.......2004-05-17
While containing a couple of new songs...All the re-recordings of their past hits are a little on the self-indulgent side. I love Agent Orange's old albums. Upon reciept of this, I was disipointed that the once great songwriting and musicianship had fallen into a pattern of living in the glory of the past. Save your hard earned money, and buy the originals.

The Review for The Lost Album.......2006-12-31
Imagine taking Living in Darkness and mixing it with both metal and surf revival. it's an excellent album, it's not as good as LID and SOnic Snake Session. Try to aviod getting this with beastly prices. the most you should spend is $30. It's a classic.
Product Description
Very rare European CD pressing featuring Todd Rundgren, TSOL, Wednesday Week, Agent Orange and Passionel.

Don't Buy This for the Rare Todd Tracks.......2005-09-01
This one is a headscratcher, mostly noodling by Todd which served as a soundtrack to a regrettable/forgettable high school crime flick (redeemed only slightly by Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance). The style employed by Todd here could best be described as "Beverly Hills Cop Meets Tiny Demons," foreshadowing some of the electronics he would later develop further in No World Order, but without the same direction or energy. As a clue to the direction he would later fully embrace in that landmark album, I suppose it's listenable, but only barely.
As for the other tracks, I'm not familiar with these artists, but the songs come off generally as Pretty in Pink leftovers. Not bad, but not great either.
Take it from someone who spent the time to hunt this one down, I would recommend you move on to more fertile Todd oddities......
