Still is relevant after all of these years.......2005-03-11

Well, I got to tell you that this album will ALWAYS be a favorite of mine. My uncle was a metal head and he gave me this on cassette right after it was released, my freshman year in high school. I didn't know what power metal was, and my whole metal world was composed of Ozzy, Metallica, Megadeth (Rust in Peace is still one of the best metal albums of all time, period), and Helloween. This album blew me away from the very first listen. Seventeen years later and it still sounds relevant, never outdated, and just plain good.

It truly is a work of art. There is just something about the atmosphere that the whole album produces. It's hard to put my spiderfingers on it, but it is different than anything that you will hear.

I have since gotten my hands on each of their releases, post and pre Transcendence. Each is worth listening, but this truly was their high point. I hope that Drenning and the gang continue to put out music in the future. Thanks guys for a great album, one that has been a pretty big part of over half of my life. Cheers!!

When I was young, I used to purchase metal albums just because the album cover looked cool. I was a fan of metal, but not very experimental. It turned out that cover art turned me onto a lot of talented artists that I never would've experienced. This was one of those purchases. Sci-fi cover art. Astrological symbols. Musicians with metal masks. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was left stunned by the power and grace of "Transcendence". It was a beautiful mistake and is still one of my favorite albums of all time. It's hard to believe that the album is over 15 years old now and still as relevant and powerful as it was then. I honestly still get chills every time I listen to "In Dark Places". My interest in music has changed and evolved as I have aged, but "Transcendence" will forever be an ageless treasure.

Transcendence (1988). Crimson Glory's second studio album.

While progressive rock has been around for quite some time, progressive metal actually didn't really start to take off until the mid-80s when bands like Queensryche, Fates Warning, and Crimson Glory arrived on the scene. All three of these bands could've easily taken the 80s hair metal path that was all the rage during that time, but instead opted to make the wise choice and sign themselves to lesser known labels, thus enabling them to have more control over their music production and develop as music artists. This was years before prog metal bands like Dream Theater entered the scene, resulting in the genre literally EXPLODING with many bands throughout the 90s. Queensryche started off well with The Warning(1984) and Rage For Order(1986), while Fates Warning had the awesome The Spectre Within(1985) and Awakening The Guardian(1986). Crimson Glory also started strong with their debut album(1987), but unfortunately the band didn't have nearly as long of a career as their peers, and they broke up after their third album.

But in between the debut and their breakup album, Crimson Glory managed to release an OVERLOOKED 80s PROG METAL MASTERPIECE. Though they never achieved the popularity that Queensryche had received, they did acquire a massive cult following with Transcendence. This is one of those albums that I'd been wanting to get for a long time, but kept putting it off for a year in favor of other things, and now that I have it, I wish I'd bought it sooner! As a little insight on how I found this album, I first heard their music from the song samples on their website, and repeatedly played them again and again because they sounded so good. Well, I finally listened to the actual album and at first it sounded different from what I was used to, but then I realized that the sound clips WERE JUST DEMO OUTTAKES! This was a pleasant surprise to me because the finished album sounds even better than those clips. Anyways, Crimson Glory's sound falls between Iron Maiden and the aforementioned Queensryche and Fates Warning. The lead vocalist "Midnight" pulls off the singing in a very Geoff Tate-esque vocal style, but he does it very well, so I'm not complaining. Guitarists Jon Drenning and Ben Jackson make a suitable lead pair and generate lots of Maiden-like melodies. Bassist Jeff Lords and drummer Dana Burnell play their parts respectably too. Judging by the band's photos, you'd think that the bandmembers were just a bunch of hair metal guys, but the poofy hair and facepaint conceals the fact that underneath they actually write some great song lyrics about topics other than partying and girls.

Crimson Glory doesn't really try anything too over-the-top with their music and they aren't exactly the most talented players in their league. Perhaps my 5 star ranking of the album comes from the fact that on Transcendence the band KNOWS how to write excellent memorable songs. What we have here are 10 filler-free tracks of pure 80s-brand prog metal. 'Lady Of Winter' kicks things off, sounding much like early Queensryche. 'Painted Skies' and 'Burning Bridges' are the album's gloomy ballads, and they are quite good to boot. 'Where Dragons Rule' and 'Eternal World' are pulse pounding rockers that are catchy as well as technically proficient. My favorite tracks are the blazing 'Red Sharks' and 'Masque Of Red Death' as well as the grand epic 'In Dark Places'. The title track is sort of a haunting accoustic number that rounds off the album nicely.

All in all, Transcendence is a fine album and much better than I expected it to be. Honestly, I can't see any fan of early Queensryche and Fates Warning being disappointed at all with this album. It captures the band in its brief prime, just before fading away into obscurity. They did reunite briefly in 1998 with the album Astronomica, but without vocalist Midnight the band could never be what it once was. Though Transcendence doesn't quite top Queensryche's Rage For Order or Dream Theater's Images & Words(1992) as my favorite prog metal albums, it definitely ranks up there close enough. It certainly belongs in every metal collection. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Perfection.......2003-09-27

Midnight is the greatest Heavy Metal vocalist ever. Apart from that, the music on this album really sets this class act apart from the seemingly millions of boring power metal bands around. The album has great power rockers like "Red Sharks" but it is the slower, more heart felt songs that really steal the show. "Painted Skies" and the title track are examples of how a Heavy Metal band can make Ballads that would make hair bands cry. All in all, the unique voice will have you hypnotized, rewinding over and over again those seemingly impossible falsettos. Crimson Glory is light years ahead than any other Power Metal band on the planet. You will love this album.

Wildeyed Southern Boy.......2003-05-21

I went into this CD expecting greatness but all I got from it was mediocrity. It has its moments, but for all the hype I was a little dissappointed. For them to be compared to Queensryche and Dream Theater in the progressive metal genre is a farce. Yes musically they're pretty good, but they sound way too hair bandish vocally for my taste.

Originally I purchased Robin Millers Transcendence after hearing a selection played from the CD on a satellite music producer called "Soundscapes". I was captivated by the flow and meter of the music which engendered a sort of celestial quality about itself allowing the listener to genuinely escape into its uncluttered, melodic embrace. Listening to Millers music exacts a sort of esoteric release from the hum drum and noise of life and transports one into a pure, sweet surreal essence of mind, which revitalizes and renews ones spirit. Millers music is addictive. I could similarly elaborate on "In the Company of Angels". Surprising stuff which kindles a feeling of total surrender to its beguiling [lyrics] notes. Magnetic music, more of which I am purchasing in his CD entitled "Nightfall in Paradise".

Another stellar keyboard performance by Robin Miller. An album that should not be dismissed as just another new age mellow music excercise, but one that needs to be listened to over and over. Some of the best music I have ever heard.

Goes good with your Enya collection. More moving than nature sounds, and no lyrics to distract from the enjoyment you will find. There are other albums, they are hard to find!

Where some artists find a new point in the phase space of music, Robin Miller discovers whole new dimensions and constructs new forms within.

An artist that truly deserves more wide spread recognition.

Turn it up and close your eyes.......2002-09-24

This music is all piano and synth and flows so smoothly its what I have been looking for a long time.
It seems that this musician it Kind of like Yanni in the way that he can come up with melodies that you can feel with your heart. Some are so beautifull I have never heard anything like it. If you find his Christmas Cd. Get it. The first song is an original and gave me tingles the first time I heard it, the others are beautifully rendered traditionals in a way that brings respect back for the season.

Robin Miller's music seems to skip the ears and go straight to the soul. I first heard him in person in Sedona, Arizona. A beautiful sound caught my ear as I strolled through a shopping area. I followed the music and was stunned to see just one man sitting behind a keyboard. I couldn't believe all that music didn't require much more to be made. I had never seen a person so much at peace with themselves and their trade. His truly genuine grin from ear to ear as he played showed an inner peace that would sell for millions if it could be bottled. His music is probably the closest thing to capturing it. I can't describe the peaceful feeling his music invokes. You really have to hear it yourself. I don't know anyone that doesn't like it. I bought 6 of his cd's on the spot and love every one of them. I highly recommend them all and even more highly recommend seeing him in person if you ever have the chance!

In Transcendence, as with his other albums, the music is ethereal, inspirational, and heavenly. I don't know how else to describe it. In trying to pick a favorite song from this CD, I could only narrow it down to six, and I like all the rest very much too. Forever One, Tears of Joy, Touching, The Love That We Are, Visions, and A Romance of Life all compete strongly with each other for the best in my opinion. I challenge you to listen to this music and try to have a bad day.

Nothing short of brilliant.......2005-05-03

The new Transcendence album Nothing Is Cohesive, their third release, is my own personal throwback to what is sacred, the music of the 60s and 70s. Ok, its 2005, I know, but you have to hear this band to understand the entire picture. They rock, no doubt about it, and they do it in such a way that you cannot resist them; you will like this band's sound. Ed Hale is a superb vocalist, sounding very much like the enigmatic U2 front man Bono at times throughout the recording.

Transcendence said a mouthful when they titled their new CD Nothing Is Cohesive. In the world we live in, one never knows what is going to happen from one minute to the next. As we become more and more unpredictable as a human race, the world that surrounds us becomes less
cohesive. Look at the CD cover; it is swirling masses of color traveling in different directions, which is not exactly an image that projects cohesiveness.

I found it interesting how they ended the album with the title track. It is an instrumental highlighted by some tasteful avant-garde keyboards. The entire album rolls right along with evocative lyrics ("Somebody Kill the DJ" & "Bored") then ends in an unusual fashion with a track like that. Proving once again that Nothing Is Cohesive, just when you expect a certain outcome, it all changes, viola! There is the concept of the album. Transcendence is one of the unsung rock bands of our generation, grinding it out day after day, and releasing quality music consistently every time they get together to record.

I love this band; their name is perfect because they transcend time and the barriers we throw up for protection. Just listen to one song and you are theirs, well at least for 45-60 minutes you are. The Beatles are an obvious influence in their sound, and that is but one element found in their sound and approach. The production aspects are notable in this
fine effort as well. This is a band with one foot in the past musically and the other is right in today. They are on top of their game in today's ultra competitive independent music scene. The "Revolution In Me" makes me want to hear this CD again and again.

A 2005 Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.......2005-04-24

This CD by Transcendence was just given to me by a friend who keeps up on all the latest underground and soon to be next big thing trends. I cannot believe this band. Just bought a real copy from amazon. From beginning to end I am amazed at what I am hearing. I am initially reminded of the Beatles or U2, or maybe U2 jamming with the beatles, hence the peppers reference above. Songs like Caetano and Cleopatra Ecstasy have a Beatles sound to them, but heavier. (Tomorrow is actually an old McCartney song from early seventies, but the band modernizes it. Sounds more like Coldplay now.)

Other songs are off the map entirely. There are numerous odd musical interludes interspersed within the other songs which help set a tone that you are travelling to other worlds. I wanna know ya rocks, though the lyrics are imperceptable at times and the cover gives no lyrics for it. Revolution in me is the most modern sounding track on the CD, and it could be the best except for the ballads which i will get to in a moment. This song really rocks! The vocals at the end are somewhere between Metallica and Dave Grohl, but again with the beatles backing them. Come on you will swear is from a long lost never released David Bowie album.

And then there are the ballads. Exquisite vocals, piano, guitar lines, slithering bass lines, beatlesqe drum fills, and lyrics that are so real that you will swear it is a resuscitated John Lennon doing the writing. All this is beginning and Softening are heart-wrenching.

The CD artwork is excellent by the way. More to it than meets the eye at first. You have to look a few times. Although the band will not tour for this CD from what I have read, the lead singer travels a lot and uses his own photos for the band's CD covers. I heard that this CD was recorded in Italy in a garage. This is hard to beleive it was recorded in a garage. There are pictures of Italy throughout the cover though.

If you like classic rock and pop music with an edge, I would say this is a soon to be classic.

Transcending the garage.......2005-04-09

With the sounds that the Transcedence collective get out of a soundproofed garage filled with antique equiptment, new computer technology and walls plastered with the idols of their inspiration, I see no reason why anyone should ever step foot into a $250 an hour studio again. To break down each song and explain it away would not do justice to Nothing Is Cohesive. This is a CD to 'rock out' to and feel the emotions that no record executive could squash. Lets hope the inspiration that fueled this music lives on in future releases because as great as this CD is, I see it as just the beginning. I hear the new CD these prolific guys are currently recording is another huge step forward. Lets hope they can get themselves on the road and see if the live set lives up to the recorded masterpiece. Favorite track, Revolution in Me.

PERFECT!!!.......2005-04-06

Ed Hale (lead singer) and Transcendence have created another perfected blend of ear candy to intoxicate the mind, move the body, open the heart, and heal the soul. Fans will certainly be satisfied with another album with the "Transcendence Trademark" of an album with styles to fit all who listen. That is exactly what makes this album and the Transcendence prior albums so unique and exciting to listen to. You initially don't know what to expect going into the next song.... could be Rock n Roll, a romantic poem sung in many languages, or could be a tripy instrumental masterpiece. Another amazing feature on Nothing is Cohesive is the tremendous female vocals. These always add even greater depth to the already great sounds of the lead vocals and instruments on all of their albums. (Wish more music released these days had more of this element....The vibe these vocals gives reminds me of the music created by greats such as Pink Floyd, Sting, and Prince). If you listen to music by Radiohead, U2, Beck, Rufus Wainwright, David Bowie, George Harrison or John Lennon, or are into any great music from other countries, you are sure to like Nothing is cohesive, and maybe their other two albums as well. This is a sure hit and now everyone is writing about Transcendence being the next 'in band' but before they become the next 'was in band' there are plenty of fans who knew long before how great they were.

An Empowering conbination of Jazz,Eastern spirituality and The Black Church.......2006-04-12

So very many have wanted to define jazz music. But being one of
the most important roots of America jazz has blossomed into so many forms of expression as far as sound is concerned. Alice Coltrane threads into her sound that which is ancient,other worldly,historical and divine. Each of her albums like any
artist's piece of work is a seperate experience not quite like
the album before or after. One cannot go into Alice Coltrane's
music only to expect sameness as the other works.If you are
willing to expand yourself just as jazz music has over time
you will appreciate what Coltrane has contributed to this piece
of music.

Another eclectic album from Alice Coltrane........2005-11-08

1977's "Transcendence" was Alice Coltrane's last jazz studio album until her pleasantly surprising return in 2004. Coltrane's Warner Brothers years are marked by a decidingly diverse bent, with orchestral arrangements being common. This album features both a string quartet on several tracks and a vocal choir on several others.

What would have been the first side of the disc is all instrumetnal-- "Radhe-Shyam" and "Transcedence" feature Coltrane's harp augmented by strings. Both pieces are intriguing, the former is deeply meditative before breaking open into a positively swirling and ecstatic arrangement, the latter succeeds a bit less, building to a head from a quiet and restrained beginning. Sandwiched in between these, "Vrindavana Sanchara" features Coltrane's harp interleaved with droning tamboura and percussion in a cascading piece that, unfortunately, doesn't go anywhere.

The seocnd side is four vocal pieces that are all fairly indistinct-- Coltrane works on organ the whole time and is backed by several percussionists. The pieces have a bizarre India-meets-gospel bent to them; all of them are quite listenable, none of them really stand out.

Invariably, that's the summation of the album-- it's all decent enough stuff, but little of it stands out. If you're sold on Alice Coltrane, this is the one to get, if you're looking to be sold, either "Journey in Satchidananda" or "Translinear Light" is the place to start.

Jazzless ambience for mediatation.......2002-10-21

This is practically not a jazz record, but Coltrane's take on spiritualizations of jazz means. It's a pretty hardcore meditation record with a little jazz bite (track 2's occassional jarring strums here and there, for instance), so I can't safely recommend it for even fans of her earlier, more straight-ahead work. Take the spacey ruminations of, say, "Journey To...", take out the saxes and semi-traditional rhythms, add soem strings and pump up the harp and you're left with this record.
I think world music or ambient heads would get more out of this than the average jazz cat.

Shawn, if you're out there..........2004-02-18

I don't actually consider this my favorite Shawn Phillips album musically-- I have favorite bits and pieces from a number of different albums, and "Rumplestiltskin's Resolve" (which is currently out of print) is probably my favorite complete album of Shawn's overall. But this one does hold a very special place for me. Not only is it a beautiful album in its own right, but (at the risk of sounding melodramatic), it may have saved my sanity one night back in 1979-- if not conceivably my life (though I'll always want to believe that I wouldn't have resorted to that).

It was a really difficult time for me. A failed business venture (due to a dishonest business partner and my own naive, overly trusting nature at the time), a depleted savings account, mounting bills, rent overdue, a lease I couldn't break, wolves at the door, and a general, overwhelming sense of desperation, all compounded by the empty loneliness of a lack of female companionship (or any companionship-- I was many miles from family and friends). One evening, while sitting in the dark in a really serious funk, wondering how the hell I was ever going to get out of the mess I was in... something told me to put on this album. I had played it many times before, of course. But somehow, this time was different. When it started, I was feeling as low as I had ever felt in my life. Less than an hour later, when the stylus tracked away from the final cut "Ease Your Mind", I found that I had an incredible sense of peace and serenity, and-- what was this?-- optimism! My entire mindset had changed. For the first time in many weeks, I suddenly felt that everything was going to be alright. It sounds corny, but had I not chosen (or did I really choose?) to listen to "Transcendence" that night, I really can't say where I might be today.

I will forever owe you a sincere debt of appreciation, Shawn, for whatever magic it was that you and your music wove for me that evening. I know, without question, that it changed my life. And if that sounds corny and melodramatic, so be it.

I had a old LP of this recording. I got this because I had been blown off by his masterpiece, Second contribution. Just try Julia's letters. You will be surprised. Strongly recommended. BTW, did he know he looked like Jesus?

This set is a fine introduction to Beethoven for a certain class of listeners. It is much too long, detailed, and serious for children. It is not for advanced musicologists, either. Author-narrator Jeremy Siepmann avoids musical analysis altogether, concentrating instead on biographical material about Beethoven and his friends and providing historical and social background. Siepmann's text is absorbing and is frequently illustrated with substantial music examples (usually complete movements) from the Naxos catalog. Unfortunately, the first such example (from the Seventh Symphony) sounds regrettably mushy, but otherwise, the performances are consistently rewarding. If Naxos has put together this set, with its very large booklet, partly to promote its catalog of Beethoven recordings, the company may well find listeners attracted by the examples offered. The complete reproduction of the spoken text seems like a waste of space and paper, but the remaining material in the booklet is intelligently written and useful. Even people generally familiar with Beethoven are sure to find something new and interesting here. --Leslie Gerber

Aweasome artist and personal friend. She is great. None of her cds will disappoint you. This one is one of my favs and her fourth cd is even better. Her fifth cd comes out in 2007. Catching her live is a must and the only way to get her first cd.
