One Kill Wonder
One Kill Wonder

Given that the Haunted features ex-members of the acclaimed At the Gates, one expects superior heavy metal. But the follow-up to 2000's excellent The Haunted Made Me Do It is simply superb. Only 38 minutes long, it's free of filler and perfectly formed. More than a simple, adrenalin-fuelled rush, One Kill Wonder's tracks blend into one another--piercing guitars meld beautifully with vocal shrieks, and grand melodies dominate the awe-inspiring charge. The Haunted claim to be inspired by old-school thrashers like Testament, but their influences clearly stretch back to Rainbow and the Scorpions (though they eschew the showy vocals of Dio and Klaus Meine). The Eastern-tinged dual-guitar assaults of "Shadow World" and "DOA" recall the Schenker brothers at their most brutal, while the dramatic instrumental "Demon Eyes" fades out with a medieval swing worthy of Ritchie Blackmore. Naturally, One Kill Wonder is righteously heavy. Few bands can match the intensity and power of "Urban Predator," "Downward Spiral," and "Bloodletting." --Dominic Wills

To Me, It Is The Most Haunted (4.5).......2006-04-04
The Haunted stormed out of the gates in 1998 with their stellar self-titled debut and their year 2000 sophomore release iced that thrash cake with a new vocalist and a big heap of more-of-the-same. It brings forth thirty-eight minutes of bruising, bashing Swedish Thrash like one expects. Usually anything Jensen touches is considered guitar genius. Sure the production and playing is up to snuff but not a crowning achievement doth that make.
"Godpuppet" and "Shadow World" are crushing and offer up some great lyrics and choruses. There are hints of the guitar I am looking for in "D.O.A" and the song itself is pretty cool. "Privation" and "Demon Eyes" get a good kick out of the listener, I preferring the latter. Most of the rest is above average Swedish Trash. I think Mark Aro has a great voice, which many would agree and disagree to.
Because of such a CD the anticipation for rEVOLVEr was too high, which caused it to collapse a little more than expected. Ofcourse I'm not saying I hate the fact that Dolving is back or anything, but, it just doesn't match up to One Kill Wonder. I wouldn't have minded Marco for staying, but The Haunted are moving on, and they aren't doing a bad job releasing what they do best at doing.
They were called "The Haunted" when Peter Dolving sang for them too, you know..........2006-02-15
And um... well... He sounded less intense than Marco.
And if you ask me, they are called The Haunted for they are the bards of Sickness, their music illustrating a world wrought with hate and violence... A cesspool of deviants in a self-indulgent society.
More importantly, they don't glorify it for it haunts them.
I suppose since Peter Dolving has returned, a few of these ... gentlemen ... would be glad to hear he's back.
But for them to honestly say they are better now... Shows you a thing or two about their taste.
Right from the end of the intro, as Godpuppet rolls in with a few quick drumrolls and a blaring riff "One Kill Wonder" wraps it's gloved hands around your throat and relentlessly keeps you in it's stranglehold until the end...
Heights of the listening experience include "Everlasting" and "Urban Predator."
Now we are to do without the haunted passion of Marco...
They're Called "The Haunted" for a Reason.......2005-12-03
And the reason has to do with the band being haunted by bad vocals on this album (though some scientists theorize they're called this because the band decided to pick a stupid name for themselves.)
Nonetheless, this is stellar musicianship. The guitars are beautiful, fast, stimulating. The drums are fast, interesting and with newly added complexity over their previous work.
Unfortunately, the vocals on this suck, as this guy just doesn't compare to Peter Dovling. Heck, he's not even in the right genre. He's doing death metal vocal work for a band whose sound should be hardcore. If I wanted death metal, I'd throw in Cryptopsy.
If you can get an audio filter to ignore this vocalist's unwarranted death grunts, then this album is worth it. Otherwise, you'll have to put up with it if you want to listen to the awesome instrumental work.
This new guy owns!.......2005-07-05
I dont know what you people are talking about. This guy is way better than peter. He can actually death growl and have a consistant scream that is alot deeper than peter's. Maybe its just taste but i like this guy alot more. Nonetheless, the Haunted are the gods of death/thrash. If you like the more metalcore stuff, go for their newest release. Other than that if you like any kind of thrash like darkane, get this one.
Violence comes to mind.......2005-06-08
If you like Slayer you need to check this out. If you like the gothenberg sound, you need to check this out, and if you are just a fan of violence in general you need to purchase this album immediately! One Kill Wonder may not be ground breaking musically (although these guys are extremely talented musicians) but what this album has is a vibe that can only be described as "unabashed violence". The speed, precision and aggression that is displayed on this album is just for lack of a better word AWESOME. The guitarwork is spectacular and dynamic, the drumming is possessed and tight as hell. What really brings this album together is Marco Aro's vocals, the guy is a beast and his gutteral yells truly complete this symphony of slaughter. The lyrics are sharp, and the subject matter perfectly fits the mold of the music, absolutely sick! So please for the love of all that is unholy, buy this masterpiece of madness and enjoy metal the way it was meant to sound.

One heavy metal wonder..........2004-12-25
The Haunted redefined the words "Heavy Metal" with this album. They took their sound a little further to create a storm of metal, with a strenghtened sound (guitars and drums) and killer riffing. Thrash metal, death metal? Who cares?. The band delivered a great album, with the typical fast and furious The Haunted songs and left some room for some experimentation as well. "One Kill Wonder" is more death metal than the thrashy selftitled debut album, with a blasting production and Marco Aro's intense growling. I prefer Peter Dolving, their original singer, who gave the band a more thrashier approach.
Overall, with the drumming, the guitar riffing, proper melodies and cool solos, The Haunted created a violent album, but clear, polished, sounding fresh and innovative at the same time (which is hard in a genre where almost everything seems to be invented) , and , to my opinion, an album totally worth listening to, if you're into tharsh, death, speed or any kinds of metal. Personally I had some At The Gates' memories with songs such as "One Kill Wonder" or "Sh+thead", but their ATG' past is a burden that the Bjorler bros will have to carry forever. The album has lots of highlights such as the before mentioned, and songs like "Shadow World", which is 100% speed metal and a song that'll make you shake your head, or the slow "Bloodletting", with a punishing solo and riffing.
If you want to listen to some of the best heavy metal, The Haunted is probably one of the best offers nowadays. Play it loud and enjoy the fury of The Haunted.
ps: Try to get the edition with bonus material, that features 3 extra songs, like my favorite "Ritual", and a Candlemass cover "Well of souls", different from the usual The Haunted stuff. If I was you, I'd purchase this edition with bonus.
