David Lee Roth at his best solo.......2007-04-14
Dont misunderstand this review. Nothing will ever be the same for Van Halen without Diamond Dave. A little Aint enough is an excellent album. Full of talented songs. That bring back some of "Diamond Daves" true life experiences. I would rate this at a 8.5 out of 10. ( still alittle biasis) against any music that isnt by the group. Rolling Stone say the album is a 5 out of 5 and spine puts it at a 4 out of 5. AudioSl put it at a 5 out of 5 and said "Truely a rebirth of daves real music"
Had the misfortune of coming out in 1991........2006-09-13
David Lee Roth in 1991 had already done 2 (well 3 if you count 1985's Crazy from the Heat E.P.) solo albums in the form of 1986's Eat 'em & Smile (which went double platinum) and 1988's Skyscraper (which barely went platinum).
During the time between 1988 and 1991 would see Dave completely lose his backing band on those 2 releases. Enter uber producer Bob Rock who along with Roth assembled a new collection of young talents mainly in the form of guitarist Jason Becker (who would be diagnosed with ALS shortly after recording commenced and was unable to tour).
Due to Skyscraper only selling half the # of records compared to Eat 'em & Smile, 1991's A Little Ain't Enough was hopefully going to put Dave back in multi platinum territory.
The album ended up barely going gold and was pretty much universally panned by critics. The subsequent tour also saw Dave playing to mostly empty (as well as smaller) venues as well. I guess you could say that this album was the death knell to his solo career.
So, now 15 years later, is the album really that bad as critics made it out to be? Not even close.
I think what caused most people to savage the album is that it was pretty much a square arena rock album for the most part and lacked the gonzo over-the-top musicianship of Eat 'em & Smile or the synthesizer drenched soundscapes of the somewhat experimental Skyscraper.
But although it is a straigt up no frills rock album, that doesn't make it bad in and of itself.
Dave is in top form vocally on this release and the extra production sheen from producer Bob Rock shows in terms of the amount of extra female backing vocals and extra instruments in terms of horns and even a passing harmonica or two.
Some people said the album was way overproduced, but I think it's just a casualty of being released in 1991 after Nirvana's Nevermind had hit, pretty much singledhandedly killing off most if not all of 80's musical acts in the process. Grunge was taking over and people weren't interested in the feel-good rock that Dave is known for.
Jason Becker brings an almost at times southern rock feel to his leads as well as bringing some really thick rhythm guitar work to the table as well. It really sucks that he was diagnosed with ALS as this guy was a true prodigy IMO.
The album has a bit of filler on it in terms of the goofy Hammerhead Shark and 40 Below and as a whole it doesn't gel quite as well as it should.
But there is still a ton of good music on here and anyone who got put out with Van Hagar and want to hear DLR in his element would do wise to pick this up.
While it doesn't quite compare to his prior 2 releases (or even to his 1998 DLR Band CD), it is still a very solid release that is a very enjoyable listen.
David Lee Braves The World Without His Hired Guns Backing Him Up.......2006-03-29
By the time A Little Ain't Enough came out, the David Lee Roth versus Van Halen war was over. Rockers' attention-spans just aren't that long to bear the weight of years. You had your pop-loving Van Hagar crowd and you had your DLR stick-to-your-guns crowd and you had people that would listen to both or neither. Steve Vai was a free agent. Billy Sheehan was hamming it up with Paul Gilbert in Mr. Big. Who knows where Greg Bissonette went? DLR is naked. Left alone. Fighting to survive. Skyscraper was okay, but not nearly as radical as Eat 'Em And Smile. Van Halen proved that they could survive a lead singer transplant. Previously underrated Shrapnel Records guitarist Jason Becker joins DLR for A Little Ain't Enough. Dio's Craig Goldie helps pen a tune. DLR is fishing for song doctors. The truly cool thing about A Little Ain't Enough is that although it is the beginning of the end for Diamond Dave's career, it is pure DLR and it f*cking rocks! The first few tunes are filler extraordiaire and a very unwise choice for the beginning of the album, but there are some really cool tunes on this album. Perhaps the masses were done with DLR as the excess of the 80s was dying away. Who knows? "Hammerhead Shark" is a straight-up rocker and a catchy tune. Oh yeah. That is DLR. "Tell The Truth" is slow-down sleaze rock. DLR specific. "Baby's On Fire" is a kewel shredder. "40 Below" feels like it should have been on Eat 'Em & Smile. "Sensible Shoes" rocks. I can't explain it, but this is DLR personified and it absolutely rocks. Attitude? That's it. "Last Call" tongue-in-cheek rocker. Hilarious. This could have been a VH tune from 1984 or Diver Down. "The Dogtown Shuffle" probably my personal favorite from this entire album. Smooth and easy and fulla 'tude. Great. Dave can write pop-culture lyrics better than anyone around. Don't f*ck with the master. This is the shizzit! "It's Showtime" & "Drop In The Bucket" are filler but they're DLR filler as opposed to the first few songs and that makes them entertaining to listen to. Soundz like castaways from the Crazy From The Heat EP. Cool.
A Little Ain't Enough was not a popular DLR album nor was it considered more than a mild success. It went Gold, not Platnium. Bummer. There are a lot of killer tunes here and this is one of the most underrated albums of all time. DLR is being honest here while VH was pushing out "Poundcake" and all that other pop-oriented bullsh*t. But where VH was still selling a ton of albums, DLR was floundering. Too bad. At least he was staying true to himself and his music while his former bandmates were whoring themselves out purely for the Benjamins. Buy A Little Ain't Enough, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Dig it!
A Pretty Good Album, by David Lee Roth.......2005-01-20
I'm a big Van Halen fan and due to the fact that the 1st song I ever heard from them was "Jump" it solidified my status as a David Lee Roth fan. Therefore, I had to listen to his solo albums. This is only the second, album i've heard from DLR (the other being "Skyscraper" and while this one has better lyrics, I think in the music department, I think they are kind of a tie.). Here are the tracks and my thoughs and oppinions:
A Little Ain't Enough:Really good title track, some of the best solo DLR lyrics.
Shoot It:Very good beat and lyrics too it. I really like this song.
Lady Luck: This isn't a terrific song, it's kind of...Boring really isn't the word, but it's the best I can come up with.
Hammerhead Shark:This is a pretty cool song actually. It's very catchy
Tell the Truth:It's allright. It's not the best song on the album
Baby's On Fire: This is better than the Van Halen song "On Fire". It's a really good song.
40 Below:This is a good song and the lyrics are kind of funny.
Sensible Shoes:The harmonica work is pretty good but the song itself just isn't terrific.
Last Call:This song has a pretty good chorus, except the verses are kind of dumb
The Dogtown Shuffle:It's semi-good. It's nowhere near being the best song on the album,
It's Showtime:The guitar in the beginning is great, and it's a pretty good song the rest of the way through as well
Drop in the Bucket:Guitar sounds spectacular. This is one of the better songs on the album.
So, all in all, this is a pretty good DLR album. A must for Van Halen fans. B+.
When Hard Rock was near-dead, along came Roth.......2004-07-18
I was impressed with previous reviews, this album is arguably the best post-Van Halen album, dished up at a time when the bottom was falling out of the hard rock scene. Dave's lyrics make the album, but unfortunately those less gifted failed to understand the Diamond One. His wit, charm, attitute, positive vibe, and creative know-how shine on, and even today the album sounds as fresh as could be. It was a kick in the guts to Eddie Van Halen and his cronies. Sam was always an average talent anyway. ALAE introduced Jason Becker, a phenominal talent, who's musical influences stretched far beyond the regular 'Eddie-rip-off' guitarist.
A great album, a great feel, from the emotionally strong Tell The Truth, to the nostalgic, smoking, epic Drop In The Bucket. And who can forget the title track! What a blast, Dave style. "Was vaccinated with a phonograph needle one summer break..."
Dave lives his life the way we all should, as if it were our last day on earth.

Album Description
The nineties continued to be groundbreaking years for David Lee Roth, as his platinum plus rocking effort A Little Ain't Enough raced up the charts. Armed with 12 new songs, a great production from Bob Rock, and a band that only Roth could pull together, A Little Ain't Enough has gone on to become one of his most highly regarded albums in his legendary career.
However, like a couple of his other significant fan favorites from his coveted discography, they have been out of print for many years, until now.
The veteran rock label Friday Music does this magnificent album justice once again, and this time it is remastered by Joe Reagoso, plus it includes the original artwork elements, song lyrics, etc. A truly pristine recording which has stood the test of time, is now within your reach once again.
The album goes into overdrive with a play on the title "A Lil' Ain't Enough" and continues breaking new territory with smashes like "Shoot It" and radio favorite "Hammerhead Shark". With help from his killer band Steve Hunter (guitar), Jason Becker (lead guitar), Brett Tuggle (keyboards and vocal) ,Gregg Bissonette returns on drums from the Eat `Em and Smile band, and Matt Bissonette on follows up on bass and vocals, it's no wonder this album raced to the top rungs of the album and rock charts in 1991.
Twelve solid performances are what you get on this amazing collection. No home should be without out this album, and if you are truly looking for a good time, no frills rock and roll DLR-style masterpiece, then A Little Ain't Enough is the answer.

3 stars? cmon, it's better than Skyscraper.......2007-07-02
This is a great album if you like David Lee Roth.
It deserves more than 3 stars so I gave it 5 - but it isnt quite that great. About a 50% mix between good rock and David's reccommended minimum of silly songs with cute lyrics.
Rate the album not the version.......2007-05-18
and not the "re-mastered"ness of this edition. It's probably not remastered, and they just slapped it on there instead of saying rereleased. Basically, this album had been out of print for a long time, and now you can get it new again. It's been available cheap used for awile, but used copies run out eventually. Order it now new if you missed it before, but if you already have it, why would you bother getting it again anyway?
This is easily Roth's 2nd best album, behind his debut. It may not have had hit singles, but is very solid through-out. Better as an album than any of the VH releases after Roth left. Had Billy Sheehan's health not faltered, this line-up could have done so much more. You can probably find it dirt cheap used, but if your looking for a new copy to give as a present, or are one of those people who just don't like buying anything used (I don't get it, but I saw it alot working at a used CD store), then don't let the lower rating this has fool you because that is whining about technicalities and not the quality of the album itself.
No better than a hack bootleg.......2007-04-11
This is one of Diamond Dave's best albums, too bad this new "remastered" version is no better than a hack bootleg all the way around. Don't waste your money if you have the original. And if you don't have the original, buy the original Warner one here or on ebay for cheap.

Little Feat ain't failed us yet as the revived institution returns ever closer to its Dixie-fried roots. The musicianship is predictably superb and Paul Barrere again keeps the spirit of Lowell George alive with his singing and slide guitar (namely, "Blue Jean Blues" and "Cajun Rage"). Yet it's newcomer Shaun Murphy who could put the band's 13th album on the map. Her superb, Bonnie Raitt-like vocals make "Big Bang Theory" and the swamp gumbo "Romance Without Finance" gritty winners. --Jeff Bateman

'WALL TO WALL' FEAT PLUS SHAUN MURPHY FOR GOOD MEASURE.......2007-03-25
THE MUSIC : This is LF doing what they do best. There are no excursions into pop-rock balladry or experiments with elaborate arrangements and jazz-rock fusions. The music is predominantly boogie-rock spiced up with shuffling rhythms, accordion and horns to give a strong 'New Orleans/Zydeco' flavour. The first 60 minutes or so is unrelenting funk-rock-boogie music with only some occasional respite.
THE VOCALS : I really like Shaun Murphy on lead vocals - her singing is both soulful and gritty (at times, sounding like a 'super-charged' Bonnie Raitt). Paul Barrere also makes a significant contribution and sometimes, there is a hint of Lowell about his singing ('keeping the embers burning', I guess).
THE SONGS : Lowell George wrote some great songs, so comparisons are inevitable. Most of the songs here are good; they may lack some of the poignancy and melody associated with Lowell's writing but, it seems to me that the songs are written, as much as anything, to be vehicles for showcasing the band's extraordinary musicianship and, in this sense, they are highly effective.
If you grew up listening to LF's early albums, it is tempting to feel that no one could replace Lowell; but things move on and I think Shaun Murphy does a superb job on lead vocals (however, I am not so enthusiastic about Craig Fuller's vocal style - pleasant enough, but out of place with the LF sound). Judged on its own merits, this is a fine LF album and comparisons with LF's 70's output serve only to detract from this.
Some brief comments about selected tracks :
BLUE JEAN BLUES - mid-tempo song, a 'classic' LF sound, vocals by Paul Barrere, great slide guitar.
CADILLAC HOTEL - jazz-funk sound, soulful vocals by Shaun Murphy, more slide guitar.
ROMANCE WITHOUT FINANCE - strong 'New Orleans' rhythm, great vocals by Shaun Murphy.
BIG BANG THEORY - straight 'in your face' boogie-rock; has a similar sound to 'Tripe Face Boogie', Shaun Murphy/Paul Barrere on vocals, searing slide guitar.
ALL THAT YOU CAN STAND - moody and sultry sound, LF's take on swamp-rock, Shaun Murphy on vocals.
BORDERLINE BLUES - atmospheric and haunting song played mainly at a slow pace, mellow guitar (dobro ?) solo, acoustic guitar and accordion accompaniment, Paul Barrere and Shaun Murphy duetting.
AIN'T HAD ENOUGH FUN - simple song with a gospel feel, features piano, accordion and acoustic guitar, no drums, Paul Barrere on vocals.
As with 'Under the Radar', you get a lot of music for you money - just under 70 minutes worth and (to borrow a quote from 'Uncut' magazine) it's 'all killer no filler'. Great music from a great band; if some of the music, on this album, doesn't 'boogie your speakers away', then nothing will.
This CD can be difficult to obtain (at a realistic price), but persevere - it will be worth the effort !
Big shoes to fill.......2003-08-16
As a fan from this bands first steps, I consider this the best, song-for-song, overall LF album. All the energy and jam-time of the live albums and songs that live up to the always great musicianship.
My favorite Feat studio CD.......2003-04-07
This Feat album is pure boogie-woogie, blues, and rock 'n' roll - and I love it for that. It does not have the jazz-fusion songs that you find on "Representing the Mambo," "Time Loves A Hero" or "Down on the Farm."
On this album, the band also wisely brought back-up singer Shawn Murphy up to the forefront - making her a full-fledged member of the band, and letting her sing more than 1/2 of the songs. Her voice is fantastic! (she also gets songwriting credit on some of the tunes.)
If you like to rock or boogie - get this album!
If you like 12-bar blues - get this album!
If you prefer jazz instead, get the aformentioned albums.

Just Wonderful.......2000-07-22
Here is the fourth (and current) incarnation of the Feat. By dropping Craig Fuller (or by Fuller dropping Feat) the group was able to really stretch out and rock. By moving loud and brassy back-up vocalist Shaun Murphy to the forefront (a move that was not surprising in light of her involvement on the previous album, "Let it Roll") makes the Feat turn into something they haven't been before. It gives them the opportunity to take a broader scope with their songs and gives Paul Barerre and Bill Payne more room for vocal interplay. This album has moments as good as any that the Feat ever had and they seem really comfortable with their role as good time roadhouse rock band. All of the songs are very good (some, like Cajun Rage and the title track, are downright awesome) but Little Feat has less become about its songwriting and more about its sound. And while Murphy sometimes gives the band a dubious hayseed sheen with her carousing Bingo at midnight, drinks at three and divorce in the morning voice, Little Feat still rocks your socks and this album, warts and all, is brilliant.

Dave, as always surrounds himself with hugely talented players, rehearses them to a fine edge and then lets loose with full force.
underated rocker.......2003-01-02
In 1991 David Lee Roth released his third solo album A little Ain't Enough. This was Dave's first album without Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan for a backup band. The album was a commercial disappointment and only went gold. The album also got overall bad reviews. All of this is unfortunate, because, this is a really good CD! Today a lot of fans regard this as Dave's best solo album. The backup band on this album was awesome. It featured Jason Becker on guitar. He is a killer guitarist who may have been the next Eddie Van Halen, had he not tragically developed ALS. Steve Hunter was the second guitarist. The rhythm section on this CD was stellar, with Gregg Bissonette on drums, and Matt Bissonette on bass. The album was produced by Bob Rock, so it has a big arena-rock sound. This CD is best played LOUD! Overall, a majority of the tracks are straight ahead rockers--such as "A lil Ain't Enough" "Shoot It" "Drop in the Bucket" "Lady Luck" and "40 Below." There is a touch of blues to the album with "Tell the Truth" and Sensible Shoes." The only filler on this album is "Hammerhead Shark" which is a dud. The album would have been meaner and leaner without it. The overall vibe of the album is very upbeat, with screeching guitar solo's that would impress Eddie.
Play It Loud, Play It Again and Again.......2001-11-08
Most of my CD favorites are live recordings, recordings that capture the energies both of the performers and of the audience. David Lee Roth's "A Little Ain't Enough", a favorite exception, is a studio recording overflowing with energy. Jason Becker's lead guitar and Gregg Bissonette's drums and percussion strut hard while David Lee Roth's vocals depict life after midnight: women, drugs, alcohol, fast cars, and violence. David's lyrics portray both the shine and the cruelty of nightlife (the CD insert is *very* worth reading), while David's brash performance depicts 'walking the line'.
Outstanding tracks include 'Shoot It' [fast talk lookin' down the barrel]; 'Hammerhead Shark' [this *should* be the fight song of the San Jose Sharks hockey team]; 'Tell The Truth' [after cheating, a relationship staggers to a halt]; 'Baby's On Fire' [Daddy raves on]; '40 Below' [Daddy is icy and hot -- *very* hot vocals and percussion]; 'Sensible Shoes' [struttin' with the well-accessorized man]; 'It's Showtime' [got it in one take]; and 'Drop In The Bucket' [*really* hot rock].
Like the Rolling Stones' classic LP "Let It Bleed" ('turn me over ... play me again') "A Little Ain't Enough" is best played again and again at loud volumes. Highly recommended as a substitute when you can't afford a night on the town.
New band, same attitude........2001-07-16
Classy American Hard Rock - nobody does it better than Diamond Dave, even without VH. This album sees young gunslinger Jason Becker take over from 'Screamin Steve Vai'...He fills his boots with ease, adding a more bluesy feel to Roth's material - partnered by Lou Reed's former guitarist Steve Hunter. Roth's new band deliver an album that is somewhere in between 'Eat 'Em and Smile' and 'Skyscraper', less flashy than the former, and more soulful than the latter. The songs are excellent and very well produced by Bob Rock. Unfortunately Becker couldn't tour with Roth due to Lou Gherig's Disease. If he had, it would have been the dawn of a new guitar hero, even in the grunge-filled '90's this combo would have survived with ease.
By far, Diamond Dave's BEST solo album to date!!.......2001-07-15
If you're looking for a fast-paced, super-sonic, bombastic, over-the-top, in-your-face, hard-rockin', fun-lovin' Diamond Dave album that's all about guns, guitars, bikinis, and fast cars, then look no further!! This is the album for you, ladies and gentlemen. As hard rock's favorite gigolo swaggers his way through the SMASH HIT title track, he gives us fans a taste of that familiar, flamboyant, big 80's sound with a hint of synthesizers mixed with big guitars that will make you truly soar! From typical-sounding, hard-rockin', head-bangin' tracks like "Lady Luck", "40 Below", and "It's Showtime!" to tunes with a little bit of that synthesized Dave-like experimentation that sound very laid-back and totally cool such as "Tell The Truth" (which makes you wanna ease back, kick your feet up, light up, and enjoy a smooth drink on the rocks), this album has it all. With producer Bob Rock at the battleship console, Diamond Dave at the helm, and a group of phenomenally fantastic musicians including guitar-whiz Jason Becker on lead guitar (this guy can really move air, man!!), Steve Hunter on rhythm guitar & slide, Brett Tuggle on keyboards, Matt Bissonette on Bass, and Gregg Bissonette on drums, this polished, tough, professional-sounding album combined with Diamond Dave's signature screeching definitely delivers the goods and will have you raving and raging for more!! Definitely Diamond Dave's best solo album to date!!
