New York nu-metal quartet Dry Kill Logic spew anger out through every pore. Their debut album is the latest in a long line of nu-metal records that rests on the axis between violent, angst-ridden rock, and sample-ridden, mechanical metal grind. But beyond the nifty call-and-response opener, "Nightmare," Dry Kill Logic too often stray along a well-worn path; the likes of "Pain" and "Weight" pound out the lyrical clichés for all they're worth. It's only when Dry Kill Logic sound genuinely unhinged that they really come together, as on the wild-eyed "Rot," which nods toward the deranged hyper-metal of System of a Down, and on "Give Up, Give In, Lie Down," which recalls the bolt-tight dynamic of stunning British metal hopes Raging Speedhorn. That anger? Perhaps it's frustration, because Dry Kill Logic have almost turned out a great rock debut. --Louis Pattison

4 out of 5 stars Catchy yet immature offering from DKL.......2007-04-13

I had the opportunity to see these guys when they were still called Hinge. They were opening for Fear Factory, along with Switched and American Head Charge.
I think they made a good name change choice, cause Hinge just doesn't have a very good ring to it.
Anyway, I really enjoyed their live show. Lots of energy. But I give them 3.5 stars for this because of the level of immaturity in the songs. Compared to their 2nd and 3rd releases, this one is the rawest, most random album in their catalog.
But even so, it has it's share of awesome mosh-inducing songs. If I was just getting into these guys, I would start with The Dead and Dreaming or Of Vengeance and Violence.

5 out of 5 stars I'm keeping you alive and yet it's killing me.......2006-09-03

Dry Kill Logic is one of the few Nu Metal-ish bands that just has a sound all their own. Play me a song of theirs and I'll know it within a few seconds. That is due in part to the terrific vocals of Cliff. Solid singing voice? Yup. Distinctive yelling/screaming voice? Oh yeah. As good as Cliff is though, the band helps him out tremendously by giving him some huge riffs and excellent breakdowns. As much as I love DKL I still have to admit that they have their faults. A few times throughout, the Nu Metal stamp is slammed right on their foreheads. They grew a lot from this release though and had they not released this they wouldn't have grown from it. So while The Darker Side Of Nonsense isn't perfect it's definitely close.

How I found out about Dry Kill Logic I'll never know but with a CD this good it doesn't really matter. I heard Track 13 prior to buying this and instantly was floored. Track 13 acts as the true highlight as it's one of the few times you're introduced to pure melody until the final track, aptly titled Goodnight. Anyone who's heard the follow-up to TDSoN surely knows they experiment a lot more with melody but on this release they stick to the heavy stuff. So if you've read any reviews before mine you can easily tell that if you're angry this is a great listen.

If you're considering buying this but you're not entirely sure I'd say to listen to Pain. That song accurately depicts how this CD comes together. Always heavy, spiteful lyrics, intense vocals, great riffs, and attitude to spare, The Darker Side... really does show you a darker side of things.

This CD isn't without highlights. Nightmare opens up on a positively corny chorus yet is completely effective. Assfault is nothing but in your face. Weight explores the singing aspect a bit more but is no less heavy than the other songs and does contain some good lyrics. Rot is the epitome of angst with a song angry teenagers the world over are sure to love. Track 13 has become a classic in my eyes. I've heard it countless times and I love it more each time. The singing verses/screaming choruses aspect, while not new, is an interesting direction for DKL. Give Up, Give In, Lie Down has an eery build up to a chorus that just blasts. And then there's the often talked about Goodnight. An acoustic song doesn't seem like it'd fit but I'll be damned if it's not a great way to end.

My favorite songs are Feel The Break, Weight, Track 13, Give Up, Give In, Lie Down, and Goodnight. The Darker Side Of Nonsense may not be the most original thing ever but in a sea of imitators it's nice to see a band have a sound all their own. They have a new CD coming out soon so we'll see if they continue to better themselves. Until then though, they've built a strong enough catalog already to tide us over. The Darker Side Of Nonsense is highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Nu-Metal.......2005-01-24

Are you an angry person? then hey, you'll probably love this CD. Very angry lyrics and drivingly heavy instrumentals comprise 11 out of 12 of these tracks with a nice acoustic mellow out track to finish it off. The instrumentals seem a bit lacking in imagination at times and the lyrics are fairly one dimensional, but on the whole this is a very intense album to listen to. Parts of the songs are rhythmic enough to be called rap metal while other parts are just straight up heavy metal. Despite the tendency towards generic-ness, this is a very good CD. Best song: Feel the Break

5 out of 5 stars Got Anger?.......2004-06-04

I found out about Dry Kill Logic through a Bonus CD that came with Rob Zombie's the Sinister Urge titled Calling all Maniacs. The song featured on it was Rot. That song alone convinced me to buy their album. Pleasantly I was not disappointed. Cliff's vocals are great. Some people compare Cliff to Corey from Slipknot, because he can scream (most of the songs) and sing (Goodnight). This is one of the CD's that perfectly expresses my anger. DKL are basically one of the bands that are pissed off about how many stupid people there are in the world. (I have met a lot of them) I wouldn't classify DKL as nu metal. There isn't any rap influence and they aren't about putting singles on the radio.

The bands name itself strikes curiosity. Originally they were Hinge. They released a 3 song EP called Cause Moshin' is Good fun and a 9 song record called Elemental Evil. Those 2 records have been out of print for a long time and most likely they will not be re-released because they had a different guitarist on those records as well as other reasons. From the opening of Nightmare, you can tell that you are in for a ride. The song I mentioned before; Rot is one of those songs that just keeps getting heavier and heavier (the last 40 seconds is the best part). The CD closes with one of my favorite acoustic songs, Goodnight. After that we are treated to the hidden track known as SAB, It sounds like something that they were just goofing around in the studio with.

Cliff sounds pissed on the entire record with the exception of Goodnight and Track 13. Scott's Guitar is relatively simple, so don't expect solos but it still sounds really good. The Bassist Dave, actually scratch built his Bass, so that shows he knows his stuff and the Drummer Phil is very good at what he does. A few of the reviews that gave a low rating said that he was the most talented of the group. If you're pissed off at the world and you need some to blow some steam, pick up a copy of the Darker Side of Nonsense today.

5 out of 5 stars F#@KING AWESOME!!.......2004-05-05

A lot of my friends who are so called Metal fans have not even heard of this band or album because they are so used to what the mainstream feeds them as "Metal". But I have not heard anything out there as brutal, powerful and goddamn intelligent as this album in the Metal mainstream for a long time.

It has reaffirmed my faith that some muso's out there still choose to have their balls securely attached.

Cheers on a great album guys!
