5 out of 5 stars stealers wheel .......2007-01-08

its great you can get this on cd ...but the tracks should be re-master so the sound could sound better...you can hear better sound off gerry raffertys 2006 cd call days gone down ''the best of'' its a import most of stealers wheel hits are there.

3 out of 5 stars There's a better Stealers Wheel collection available.......2004-12-02

This "Best Of" is the NOT the definitive Stealers Wheel collection. You may want to steer yourself to "Stuck in the Middle with You," the 2000 Polygram International release that is the first to include "Stuck In The Middle With You," "Star" and "Everyone's Agreed That Everything Will Turn Out Fine," Stealers Wheel's three charting American Singles. (Note that "Fine" is not on this particular set.)

Also worth noting, both the debut "Stealers Wheel" and "Ferguslie Park" are back in print, on CD for the first time.

4 out of 5 stars Made me feel good again!.......2004-11-20

I didn't give it 5 stars only because I tend to skip around the CD when in my car to get to songs I prefer (or skip back to them). I suppose we all have different tracks we like and a few that really make us feel inspired when we hear them. I bought this album for "Stuck in The Middle With You" but "Star" and "Steamboat Row" really work for me. Of course "Late Again", "Wheelin'", "Nothing's Gonna Change My Mind" are really good too. I do agree with another reviewer who said that "Stuck in The Middle" kind of moved to the rear. There are songs that are better than "Stuck" (hard to believe but true) on this disc. If you feel a little misty for the past this is an album you should have!

4 out of 5 stars The best Stealers Wheel collection.......2004-06-23

This is the best (and only) Stealers Wheel collection available. It includes their only two top 40 hits, the top 5 classic Stuck In The Middle With You and Star. It also includes strong selections from their 3 albums. My only complaint is that it is missing the minor hit Everyone's Agreed That Everything Will Turn Out Fine, which just missed the top 40. Considering it was their 3rd biggest hit, there is really no excuse not to include it on any Stealers Wheel compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection But By Default.......2002-11-01

Gerry Rafferty went solo with the critically acclaimed "Can I Have My Money Back" album after he dissolved his partnership with Bill Connolly in the Humblebums. In 1972 Rafferty hooked up with another partner Joe Egan in Stealers Wheel.
Here, Rafferty hit his stride with a more worthwhile songwriting partner in Joe Egan. With 'Stuck In the Middle With You', it seemed like they were on to great fortune in releasing three solid albums in "Stealers Wheel", "Ferguslie Park" and "Right Or Wrong" with production from Lieber and Stoller ( of Coasters fame) on the first two albums and Mentor Williams (Dobie Gray's 'Drift Away') on the last. Unfortunately the hits dropped off dramatically after 'Stuck In the Middle' with their three album legacy tragically destilled (or hacked) down to this pleasing fourteen track compilation.
From the harmonium driven 'Late Again' to the haunting, surreal ballad 'Next To Me'(both from the "Stealer's Wheel" album 1972), from rockin' 'Wheelin'' and lively Brewer and Shipley styled hit 'Star' (both from "Fergulie Park" 1973) and from the power pop of 'Go As You Please' to the strange mix of Gregorian chant and Celtic waltz melody in 'Benediction'(both songs from "Right Or Wrong" 1975)you can't lose. Great folk CSN&Y harmonies abound sometimes set accessible pop melodies, or to haunting celtic arrangements and even some power pop sensibilities.
It is with a bit of trepidation that I am giving this compilation a five star. It is only by default because this seems to be the only release available by Stealer's Wheel and it is easy to have a good listening experience from a collection that came from already solid releases.
This Collection should be only a starting point. If you can find the original albums on CD then go for it (I was only able to obtain 'Ferguslie Park' on CD as a Japanese import about ten years ago) or otherwise seek out vinyl copies of "Stealers Wheel", "Ferguslie Park" and "Right Or Wrong". Or better yet, we all ought to petition the reissue labels to issue these original three on compact disc.
"Baker's Street" would actually be anti-climactic.

5 out of 5 stars Stealers Wheel- Who knew?.......2007-07-13

I had heard the song Stuck in the Middle with You on the radio for years, but never knew who performed it. Someone told me it was Bob Dylan, so I did some research and found out that it was Stealers Wheel. So I purchased the cd just because I loved Stuck in the Middle with You. But, there are so many other songs on the cd that I enjoy as well. I like to listen to the cd when I am exercising or cleaning the house. Most of the songs have a good beat and I can keep a good pace. I would definitely recommend this cd. I have listened to it non-stop since purchasing it.

4 out of 5 stars Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right.......2004-12-02

It may have taken a decade for Gerry Rafferty to come to terms with his past (his classic "Baker Street" was about meeting Joe Egan several years post-Wheel breakdown), but "The Best Of Stealers Wheel" will rekindle the flame for anyone who puzzled over originally hearing "Stuck In The Middle With You." Thanks to some more obsessive fans (Quentin Tarrentino has used both "Stuck" and "Star" in his movies), Stealers Wheel has held on to their cult audience. This "Best Of" is the definitive collection, being the first to include "Stuck In The Middle With You," "Star" and "Everyone's Agreed That Everything Will Turn Out Fine," Stealers Wheel's three charting American Singles.

The US got tricked by the Wheel back in 1973. A single with a lyric that sounded torn from Bob Dylan's back pages and harmonies that mirrored CSN&Y climbed into the Top Ten. "Stuck In The Middle With You" was an immediate classic, and the brains behind Stealers Wheel suddenly found themselves turned into overnight success stories. Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan had been kicking about England for several years (Rafferty had cut a solo album and recorded with folk rockers the Humblebums before forming Stealers Wheel), and the group had already been signed, broken up and reformed before the first album came out.

That debut, a delicious mix of English folk harmony and Beatlesque pop, contained several great songs. These included "You Put Something Better Inside Of Me" and "I Get By." Produced by the legendary Lieber/Stoller team (writers and producers for the likes of Elvis Presley, Ben E King and The Coasters), the album had a clean and uncanny sense of craft. Unfortunately, Rafferty and Egan were a volatile pair. They had broken up again before starting the second album, then reformed and promptly fired the then current Wheel line-up to proceed as a Steely Dan like studio entity, recording "Ferguslie Park" with session hands.

Another pair of minor hits came off that album, the deceptively disillusioned "Star" and the more optimistic "Everyone's Agreed That Everything Will Turn Out Fine," and the FM radio staple "Good Businessman." But the tension between the two escalated. It led to a terrific and unheralded third album, "Right Or Wrong," before the duo splintered for good. That swan song yielded a couple great tunes here, in particular the title track and "Benediction," as well as the music hall sound of "Found My Way To You."

Also worth noting, both the debut and "Ferguslie Park" are back in print, on CD for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars Classic first rate band!!.......2004-10-08

"Stealers wheel" may not be a name recognised by the general public..but if given a listen-there are some clear cut gems here! 'stuck in the middle' is the hit of this cd-but its just the beginning of a great polished sound! other highlites include-'star', right or wrong', walltz, stealin', steamboat row, ect..this band also featured the talents of GERRY RAFFERTY(who later on recorded "baker street' and right down the line. AMAZING harmonies, musicianship and craft(joe eagan) and other quality musicians.

4 out of 5 stars More than a One Hit Wonder.......2001-12-27

Compiled from their three albums of the early 70's, this actually turned out to be quite a fine piece of pop music. I purchased this CD based on my appreciation for "Stuck in the Middle with You" but soon found that it turned out to be one of the weaker numbers on the compilation. Complete with slide guitar, harmonica, violins, jangly piano, this is certainly a band that has the rock-country-folk sound down to a science. Virtually every song is a winner. Some of the standouts, in my opinion, include "This Morning", "Star", "Steamboat Row" and "Go As You Please". It's mellow, but also includes a couple tunes that can get you up and dancing. Gerry Rafferty has never really broken through as a big talent and it's a bit curious as to why he hasn't. Certain alt-country bands of the 90's sound quite a bit derivative. It's easy now to see where some of their influences have come from. If you're a fan of Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo, or Slobberbone, you might want to give this disc a spin.

5 out of 5 stars Beatlesque melodies galore!.......2007-05-04

What a superb, little-known "lost" classic album! If you enjoy Beatles music and wish there was more, look no further than this excellent, highly melodic masterpiece by Stealers Wheel. If all you know is "Stuck in the Middle With You", then you're in for a treat. Gerry Rafferty was at his peak as a songwriter at this time; most of his later stuff pales by comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Stealers Wheel- Stealers Wheel.......2007-01-09

My favorite album from this band. Classic thoughtful 1970's rock... great instrumentation, catchy songwriting.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent debut album finally reissued on CD!.......2004-11-28

Awesome pop/rock debut with the gorgeous harmonies & awesome songwriting/melody composing of Gerry Rafferty & Joe Egan.

While "Stuck In the Middle With You" was the obvious huge-hit from this album, there is no filler what-so-ever. Every song is just as much a gem, and so many songs from these talented guys should have also been hits. Easily one of the greatest pop/rock debut albums of the 70's.

Even if you're only familiar with "Stuck In the Middle" (which most are), this is a highly recommended pop/rock masterpiece to add to your music collection. (Along with their only other 2 albums "Ferguslie Park" and "Right Or Wrong", which are equally, and if not better.. than this terrific album).

4 out of 5 stars Good..........2004-09-27

What first turned me on to Stealers Wheel was when I first saw Resevoir Dogs a few years ago. Tarantino's use of the hit "Stuck In The Middle With You" I thought was great. I figured after listening to this album that they would come across as just a "One hit...", but I thought that the album wasn't half bad. The bassist comes through with some surprisingly good rifts here and there and, vocally, the album is pretty tight. So have a listen or just watch the infamous "ear scene" in Resevoir Dogs, it's great.

5 out of 5 stars A Rafferty/Egan Masterpiece.......2006-01-13

The sad thing is that Stealers Wheel here in America usually means "Stuck in the Middle with You," which is what the "oldies" stations seem to play ad nauseam, as if that were the only song they ever recorded.

For my money, just about any track on Ferguslie Park eclipses "Stuck in the Middle" (perhaps that is because I've heard it hundreds of times beyond endurance).

Something else should also be said: Joe Egan is all the singer-songwriter that Gerry Rafferty is, though he never went on to the same illustrious post Stealers career as did Rafferty. Listen to "Star" and "Wheelin'," or "Nothing's Gonna Change My Mind." Why Egan didn't go on to better things boggles the mind.

I know that "timeless" is an overused phrase, but this album (yes, I still think of these records as albums) is just that. Buy it, even if you've never heard of Stealers Wheel before.

And for the fans, the Lemon reissue is a well put together package, with very good artwork and liner notes including full lyrics.

Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Everything Didn't Work Out Fine.......2005-02-13

I had a similar experience as "Coon from Alabama" did when I played my CD copy of "Ferguslie Park," and found that it did not contain single version of "Everyone's Agreed Everything will Turn Out Fine" as advertised. So I reccommend you update that description. That being said, it was good to finally hear this album again after so many years, especially "Steamboat Row." When Universal finally gets around to re-issuing Stealer's Wheel in U.S., hopefully they will include the complete catalogue.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest pop/rock albums.......2004-11-28

Gerry Rafferty & Joe Egan made some beautiful, clever & fun music in their sadly short run as Stealers Wheel. While I personally rank all 3 albums pretty much on the same level, this one pokes out a bit ahead since it has 2 more songs than the other 2 ten-track albums. =)

Gorgeous harmonies, sweet & catchy melodies.. and fun joy-for-the-ears arrangements.. it is a tremendous shock that this album has been unavailable on CD for a decade (and previously only on a Japanese-only CD which was impossible to find).. and this group continues to be overlooked.

From the Beatlesque "Star" to the beautiful "Over My Head", and chilling "Who Cares?"... all the way to the awesome finale "Everyone's Agreed That Everything Will Turn Out Fine".. EVERY song is a pop/rock gem. If you love Gerry Rafferty's music, or Stealers Wheel's hit "Stuck In the Middle With You", then you can't go wrong with this album.

HIGHLY recommended!

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM!!.......2004-10-03

Woo Hoo! Finally, 31 years later, this obscure release sees the light of digital day. And had these tracks been the ones on the first Stealers album...backing up their smash hit "Stuck In The Middle With You", the future would surely have been a lot brighter for the Wheel. As it was, there was considerable disappointment for buyers expecting more on the debut and most weren't willing to take a chance on the sophomore. What a shame, because even without a big hit - Cut for cut, Ferguslie Park totally dukes the debut and is LOADED with top drawer Brit bop.
All 12 songs make the grade and the tempo balances weaving their way thru the collection makes for a superb listening experience with a sweet aftertaste.
Highlights include Joe Egan's "Star", a minor hit that should have been major, "Blind Faith", the rocker "What More Could You Want?", "Wheelin'" and the soft Rafferty folk tale "Steamboat Row". The only letdown here is the inclusion of a re-recorded version of "Everyone's Agreed That Everything Will Turn Out Fine" that doesn't measure up to the original single version.
If you think you already possess all the great "lost" classics from the 70's and you don't have "Ferguslie Park" by STEALERS WHEEL, get your credit card number ready. This is it.

5 out of 5 stars I believe there's some false advertising here.......2004-10-02

The description for this album states that it includes 'one bonus track 'Everything Will Turn Out Fine' (7 inch edit).'. This led me to believe that the original version of this song, recorded with the original lineup of the band or at least a form of the band that didn't exist by the time the second album was recorded, would finally be available on CD. I had purchased a Best of Stealers Wheel and a Best of Gerry Rafferty and both of them included the 'Ferguslie Park' version of the song. I ordered the album, received it today, and there is NO bonus track, nothing other than the original album. The description here is totally untrue. Having said that, the rest of the album was superior to the first in my opinion. This was the kind of approach that I would have expected John Lennon to take in his solo work based on his best moments in the Beatles. As Badfinger, one of the other major Beatles-influenced bands of the early seventies, was primarily dominated by the McCartneyesque Pete Ham, Egan and Rafferty both had Lennonesque vocal inflections and many of their songs had similar melodic constructions to some of John's. They also had their share of management and promotional difficulties as well as interpersonal instability although neither of them went the suicide route of Pete Ham or Tom Evans. Aside from the mistake of rerecording 'Everything Will Turn Out Fine' or at least departing from the original arrangement, one of the most fascinating and inventive pop singles I've ever heard, Ferguslie Park is one of the more memorable albums of the seventies for me, unjustly negelected while dozens of critics' darlings bask in their glow of praise. Don't simply write these fellows off as second rate Beatles ripoffs. This kind of pop craftsmanship is a rare breed these days.

4 out of 5 stars Stealers Wheel- Right or Wrong.......2007-01-09

1970's classic rock- great melodies and harmonies. Opening song "Benediction" is one of my all time favorites.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three.......2005-03-28

I just ordered this CD this morning, so I'm not reviewing the CD so much as I am the album itself. This was the third and last Stealers Wheel album, and in my opinion, the best of the three.
By this time the hit singles had dried up and the group was on the verge of splitting, but they somehow gathered enough good will and energy to produce a wonderful album. If you are Catholic, and easily offended, don't listen to Benediction. It's not flattering in the least. But the next song, "Found my way to you" is as upbeat and positive a love song as you could ask for.
All in all, this is a great album and I am so glad it's finally on CD. My vinyl album is still in good shape, but my record player died long ago. Buy the other two albums, "Stealers Wheel", and "Ferguslie Park", and revel in the pure joy that was Stealers Wheel!!

For the benefit of others who may be interested in this disc, I'm going to start off by listing the proper tracks that are on the disc and not the erroneous product description that Amazon, true to form, has put out. The tracks are:

        Disc 1:

Bennie and the Jets - Elton John
Show Me the Way - Peter Frampton
Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry
Rich Girl - Hall & Oates
        YMCA - Village People
Rock the Boat - The Hues Corporation
You're So Vain - Carly Simon
Two Out of Three Ain't Bad - Meat Loaf
I Think I Love You - The Partridge Family
Stuck In the Middle With You - Stealers Wheel
I'll Take You There - The Staple Singers
Love Will Keep Us Together - Captain & Tennille
Turn the Beat Around - Vicki Sue Robinson
Say You Love Me - Fleetwood Mac
Kung Fu Fighting - Carl Douglas
December 1963 - The Four Seasons
        Lady Marmalade - LaBelle
Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren
I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash
Ramblin' Man - Allman Brothers Band
I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor

        Disc 2

Joy to the World - Three Dog Night
        Le Freak - Chic
        Shadow Dancing - Andy Gibb
        My Sharona - The Knack
        Brick House - Commodores
What a Fool Believes - Doobie Brothers
That's the Way I Like It - K C and the Sunshine Band
Theme from Shaft - Isaac Hayes
        Dream Weaver - Gary Wright
        American Pie - Don McLean
Don't Leave Me This Way - Thelma Houston
Best of My Love - The Emotions
        Back Stabbers - The O'Jays
Don't Bring Me Down - ELO
You're No Good - Linda Ronstadt
Don't Pull Your Love - Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds
        I'm Not In Love - 10cc
Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe - Barry White
Let's Stay Together - Al Green

I'd say all the tracks are very representative of the 70's and so the track selections are impeccable. The sound qualiy is okay but given the quality of what's out there at the moment, it would be ideal if this whole album could be given a proper remastering treatment to clean up the sound.

        Recommended.
