Usually people buy the single first, since the actual album hasn't come out yet. But with "Mein Teil" here is an example of a single that is so good that you should really consider buying the single even AFTER the actual album (Reise, Reise) has already come out. Sure, you could buy the album and hear "Mein Teil", but OOH BOY! would you be missing out! Here's why:

MEIN TEIL: This is the original version (+ 15 or 20 seconds) that you hear on "Reise, Reise". At the very beginning of this version you'll hear a German voice say the following as an introduction to the song . . .

"Suche gut gebauten Achtzehn- bis Dreißigjährigen zum Schlachten
Der Metzgermeister"

Translated (loosely) means: "Seeks good-figured 18 to 30 year-old to butcher. --The Butchermaster"

And then the rest of the song is exactly like the version on "Reise, Reise". If you love hard, heavy music that has coherent lyrics that you can even follow along with, you'll love this song!

MEIN TEIL (YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT EDIT) (REMIXED BY THE PET SHOP BOYS):
WOW!!! This is what makes me have to have this single! It's my belief that a good remix should make the original song sound "new" while still capturing the spirit of the original. This remix wastes no time whatsoever getting to the point. There is definitely more of a techno feel here and the heavy bass does an outstanding job of counteracting it, making this a very well-balanced remix. Once again, WOW!

MEIN TEIL (RETURN TO NEW YORK BUFFET MIX) (REMIXED BY A. BAKER):
Blah. This one sounds like they tried to make it club-friendly but it is waaaaay too repetitive to enjoy. Just say to yourself "Denn du bist, denn du bist, denn du bist" on and on and on for about 5 minutes and you get an idea of what this remix is like.

MEIN TEIL (THERE ARE NO GUITARS ON THIS MIX) (REMIXED BY THE PET SHOP BOYS): Almost as good as the first Pet Shop Boys remix, but not quite. The two are very similar, of course this one has no guitars.

MEIN TEIL VIDEO: Not all the singles will have this video I think. I got my single from Amazon.de the day "Mein Teil" came out and it came with it. The video is shown on a special player with a screen size roughly that of a post-it note. But I think there is also an option to go online and maybe see a larger screen version of it (something I never was able to do, lacking internet). The video itself is okay, but not great and will probably offend some of us (especially if you like angels). It's no wonder they didn't show this video much (if at all) on VIVA or MTV in Germany when I was there.

RECOMMENDED: If you like the hard-hitting sound of "Mein Teil", you'll like "Zerstoeren" from Rammsteins latest album "Rosenrot". Outside of Rammstein you might want to try Oomph! "Wahrheit oder Pflicht"

4 out of 5 stars I've never had so much fun listening to a macabre dinner!.......2004-12-06

"Mein Teil" (or "My Part/My Thing") is a GREAT song that is actally the hardest on Rammstein's new album (number one in most of europe) "Reise, Reise" (or "Voyage, Voyage" or even "Arise, Arise"). This CD actually has really good mixes on it. A lot of times you pick up a single and after the origanal song the rest is techno garbage- but not here! The origanal Mein Teil is great alone, but the moment you move on the "You Are What You Eat!" remix the fun begins again. Faster than the origanal (and with really good mixed in back up voices speaking gibberish like "You are what you eat!") this song is a party by itself. The "Return to New York Buffet" mix is really good once you get past the lengthy beginning (all DJ's believe it is healthy to play at LEAST 2 mins of looped music before the song begins). This one is really more of a rave song, so that's why only 4 stars. It's really repetative- but really good despite that. The people who mixed it did a really good job. Last the "There Are No Guitars On This Mix" version is also really good. I like this mix alot because it was handled very well (being without guitars and all) Especially during the chorus parts! =D Try it! If you love hard music you've GOT to love it!

5 out of 5 stars Achetez-le!!!!!!!.......2004-08-10

5 out of 5 stars whoa..........2004-08-10

The story behind this is gross enough, but now the song comes out and tells the story itself..I love it.. Rammstein recreates a scene in Germany where a cannibal posts an ad in public wanting someone to eat, someone answers the ad and gets eaten alive. If your a heavy Rammstein fan, this song reminds me alot of "Herzeleid" and "Rein Raus" combined, it is very heavy, filled with a driven sound throughout the whole song, and like the old school Rammstein style, it does not let up.
Seeing as how it is new, a lot controversy has been raised about the song, but doing some searching, I have found and downloaded 4 different versions. Seeing as how they are still new and I have not found the proper names for them, I am describing them by how the songs are different from each other.
Mein Teil (original): the power driven ballad, straight up in your face Rammstein, pounding guitars, and a scary voice to fit.
Mein Teil (Electronics version): this version is completely different from the original, using electronics to add an upbeat emotion to the song, the words are different, this might be the Reise Reise version, so I am not clear. But this song has a killer guitar riff, and pounding drums, great song, you need to listen to it a few times, though.
Mein Teil (5 minute version): this version is very much like the original, just 30 seconds longer, and some words are taken out, and some words are added. Same guitars and drums, voice sounds the same, but its still a great song to listen to.
Mein Teil (Instrumental): no words, just a calm kickback between each version of the song, it sounds like a computer generated guitar in the background, but I dont know, a great relaxing yet suspicious song.
All in all, these four versions are in some ways different, but in most ways the same. Rammstein really picked a hell of a subject to write a song about, and I look forward to purchasing the cd and getting everything straight. If your a first timer Rammstein fan, I strongly recommend any version of this song except the instrumental, not to be rude in anyway, but that version was kind of a let down. To end this on a good note, I look forward to the new material from these guys, and I hope they keep rockin the German way, straight up in your face rock.

5 out of 5 stars Rammstein are back!.......2004-08-10

Rammstein are back - with a vengeance! "Mein Teil" is the first single from their long anticipated forthcoming album, tentatively titled "Reise, Reise". If you can't tell by hearing "Mein Teil", the new album will be quite a bit different from what Rammstein have done in the past. They wanted to find a "new" sound, and by god I think they have! "Mein Teil" is an awesome song. I love how Rammstein have mixed choir voices and what sound like percussion drum beats (in the background) with hard pounding rifs. I would expect the choir element to be present througout the new album. Their second single from the album will be called "Amerika" and will feature lyrics sung by Till in English. But more about "Amerika" some other time. If you are a fan of Rammstein, you will most definitely enjoy "Mein Teil". It is good to see that the boys are back with a strong, poweful number. I can only expect excellent things in the future and from the forthcoming new album.

Long live Rammstein!

4 out of 5 stars Delightful vocal music.......2000-06-11

Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) lived his entire life in North German and Denmark. He held a position as an organist in Lübeck and Helsingør. A postion that never required him to compose vocal music, yet he left over 120 vokal works in a wide range of compositional styles and texts almost entirely sacred. The beautifully soprano Emma Kirkby sings these songs with infectious charm and with great attachment to the music. Accompaniments are stylish and well balanced, and the recording is altogether first rate.

5 out of 5 stars Placido Domingo's EMI 30 Year Anniversary.......2005-12-02

This expensive box set is a collection of scenes from full-length recordings starring tenor Placido Domingo under the EMI record label, a label that championed him. This is unquestionably Domingo's most extensive compilation album. He is in fine voice as he sang under EMI throughout the years, but mostly in the 80's and 90's. Here we find him singing his most celebrated roles- Verdi's Otello, still his signature Italian role, Alfredo from Traviata, Mario Cavaradossi from Tosca, Lieutenant Pinkerton from Madame Butterfly, Dick Johnson from La Fanciualla Del West, Rodolfo from La Boheme, Don Carlos- the role that earned him a place in the EMI catalog. The Giulini Don Carlos is still a hot item and here we hear excerpts from that legendary recording. If you are the biggest fan of Placido Domingo, and you have the money for it, this is for you. It's hours and hours of beautiful singing in the tenor key, and moments of dramatic intensity in opera. Get this before it sells out fast!

2 out of 5 stars A dreary performance with inferior sound........2005-09-10

The music of Heinrich Schuetz is grounded not only in solid counterpoint but also in the natural rhythms of the German language (and, somewhat less pointedly, Latin). As a result, a good and godly performance, even in a Lutheran Church before a solemn congregation, demonstrates clarity among the various voices as they move over, under, and against one another in delicious polyphony and yet also expresses the emotions behind the words, the shifting of feeling and mood within a piece and among the pieces in a collection.

The Dresdener Kreuzchor sang this music for decades under the direction of Rudolf Mauersberger, from 1930 until his death in 1971. They established (or passed along) a tradition of how Schuetz's music should sound. To my ears, this tradition as presented to us on these CDs is one of stolid, heavyhanded, unmoving, and quite mind-dulling music-making.

These performances are sung, one composition after the other, in the same heavy tempo and the same unyielding mezzo-forte dynamic. The choir's intonation is fine but the vocal quality is a bit raw and unforgiving. The 1994 digital remastering of the 1972 edition of these performances from 1962 is poorly done. One hears distortion in the treble voices and the orchestral ensemble and organ are barely audible.

What should the music of Schuetz sound like? I direct your attention to recordings by three different groups, each of which performs Schuetz somewhat differently from the others but each of which reveals the life and spirit inherent in the music:

1. John Eliot Gardiner's recording of 4 Motets and the German funeral music with the Monteverdi Choir, the Englilsh Baroque Soloists, and His Majesties Sagbutts and Cornetts on DG Archiv, 1988.

2. Paul McCreesh's imaginative and loving attempt with the Gabrieli Consort and Players to recreate Christmas Vespers as it might have been sung in Dresden about 1664, including Schuetz's version of the Christmas Story as well as three related motets, DG Archiv, 1999.

3. Craig Smith's generous recording with Emmanuel Music of Boston of twenty-one motets and Psalm settings in both German and Latin, Koch, 1991.

I'm a soft-hearted fellow. I hate to write a negative review. I try to say as many positive things as I can about a performance. This time, however, with all due respect for my fellow reviewers, the most positive comments I can make are about alternatives to this set of CDs.

4 out of 5 stars Good solid performance, conveys message of the biblical text.......1999-03-25

Mauersberger has the ability to impart strength to his performances without overwhelming the listener. I like prefer his use of orchestra vs. a capella choruses better than the way Ehmann did. His "Sehet an die Feigenbaum" shows the power side of Schütz typical of all great German composers (something that some "authentic" performers have a hard time coming to grips with). I like "Was mein Gott will" which uses trombones and string bass masterfully (one of my favorite instrumental textures). His "Selig sind die toten" is indescribably beautiful and an expression of his Lutheran faith. Although I understand German, I wish Berlin Classics would print an English translation for those not blessed with such.

3 out of 5 stars Venerable early Schutz recording.......1998-09-26

Rudolf Mauersberger (1889-1971) did a great deal to rediscover Schutz for modern audiences. Amongst the reissues on Berlin Classics this 2CD set of the complete Geistliche Chormusik of 1648 is one of the most valuable. For those wanting the traditional cathedral choir sound this is the recording to go for. For those wanting a more modern "authentic performance" sound the set by Hennig (if available) or the 1998 Cordes performance on CPO will be preferred.

5 out of 5 stars Can we just put a sixth star?.......2004-09-01

I'm usually no big fan about singles, because singles always find the way to because heavily rebarbative... I guess you know what i mean.

But! Surprise Surprise! I might have become crazy, but that single is totally awesome!!

The song, itself, is probably the harder song Rammstein ever created, with THE subject: The Cannibal of Rotenburg (to resume for those who doesn't know much about this story: there was a man, in germany, that wrote a quote on the ent, searching for: a man between 18 and 30, to be sexually abused (SadoMasochism), then being eaten, alive... So i figure you can probably imagine the rest)

Once again, Rammstein provocates us with poetically-chocking lyrics, and make us reflect about how the line between men and animals can be thin (for those who haven't seen the Clip about the song, we see the band members fighting each others (at the end), then being chained down as dogs... Pretty evocative...)

This single is a must, as much as it is for Rammstein fans or for anybody that loves dark poetry or music. I now realise that you CANNOT be disapointed after you buy any of Rammstein's merchandise :D!

5 out of 5 stars WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-08-16

These guys have never failed to impress. Mein Teil is one of the songs that you can feel tumping in your head, even thou its about a cannibal the song is so beautifully composed. I can't wait until the whole ablum comes out, way to go guys!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Rammstein is back and more powerful than ever!.......2004-08-03

After 3 years, the new Rammstein single is finally here. No one knew which song from their new album, entitled "Reise Reise" (Voyage Voyage), would be chosen as the first single. Earlier this year, the choice seemed to be "Rosenrot" (Rose Red). Not too long after, the group chose "Mein Teil" (My Thing/Share).

Look at "Mein Teil" as the equivalent to "Feuer Frei!" from the Mutter album. Both are harder and heavier than most tracks. The song "Mein Teil" tells the story of an accident in Germany in which a cannibal posted an ad for someone to eat. Someone actually replied and he was eaten. Literally. The text from the actual ad is included in the song:

"Suche gut gebauten 18 bis 30-Jährigen zum Schlachten
- Der Metzgermeister"

Given the text of the song, "Mein Teil"'s tone fits right along. The song opens with the sound of knives being sharpen. Till Lindemann's voice changes from his normal deep tone to an almost haunting scrawl. The entire song seems haunting in a way, making the song even better. Till's new voice continues until he finally yells: "Denn! Du Bist... Was! Du Isst...", similar to "Tier" which was on the Sehnsucht album. The chorus is just as eerie as the chorus due to the distant "Nein..." in the background.

With this being said, "Mein Teil" is explosive and shows that the next album will be nothing short of genius. Amazing.
