4 out of 5 stars "It Won't Be Long" until you'll want this gem from 1968/69.......2007-06-18

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

To most, the self-titled record by Gun in 1968 came and went. To a few that were intrigued with the work of the Gurvitz brothers- Adrian (Guitar) and Paul (Ginger Baker-Gurvitz Army) and fully explored the diversity of songs on the LP, this recording is a trophy in their music collection.

Along with drummer Louis Farrell, the Gurvitz brothers formed what many consider a power trio but that is not entirely correct. While the music at times is in your face quality rock and roll, the songs travel all over the musical spectrum. One moment you will hear psychedelia and then all of a sudden a sprinkle of progressive sounds. There is even a track "Rupert's Travels" that sounds in part like Mason Williams 1968 hit "Classical Gas."

The tune that opens the album "Race With The Devil" actually received radio play as a single in Europe and on some of the progressive rock outlets in the USA.

What you may find surprising is excluding the final cut "Take Off"" which clocks in at 11 minutes the rest of the compositions are not overly long. This shows that there was a lot of thought behind the direction of the recording sessions. The mission was not to improvise and extend for the sake of doing. The goal all along was to put out a record and make every note count.

At soon to be age 40 "Gun" has held up rather well. Actually it is better with age!

The CD pressing is well mixed. There isn't any ego getting in the way of the final results. Drummer Louis Farrell is well represented and not reduced to the background.

Not convinced yet? As an added bonus this edition contains the second album "Gunsight."

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

5 out of 5 stars hard rocking trio's career on a disc.......2000-06-13

Led by brothers, Adrian and Paul Curtis nee Gurvitz, Gun was a shortlived hard rock trio in the vein of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Comprised of guitarist/songwriter Adrian, bassist/lead vocalist Paul, and drummer Louis Farrell, Gun recorded only two albums in their short career-span of 1968-69, and Beat Goes On Records has compiled both lps onto this single 18 track, 75 minute disc. Opening with the band's UK hit 'Race With The Devil' the disc immediately lets the listener know that they are in for an all out assault on their auditory senses. Ranging from straight-out rock and roll to rather reserved ballads, and filled with plenty of psychedelic tinges, Gun's recordings are never boring, and through the entire 75 minutes, Adrian's guitar work remains crisp and interesting. The highlight of the disc may well be "Yellow Cab Man" from the group's debut album, while the extended jam "Take Off" has lots of tasty bits from Adrian. The group's second album may be somewhat less inspired than the debut, but it still contains loads of interesting guitar work. The Curtis brothers began using their birthname Gurvitz not long after the demise of Gun, and went on to record 3 albums as the Three Man Army and later an additional 3 lps with former Cream drummer Ginger Baker, as the Baker Gurvitz Army. While the Gun albums may not be the work of the most original band, the guitar work of Adrian Curtis (Gurvitz) alone makes for enough listening pleasure to make the purchase of this disc worthwhile.

fans of cream and hendrix in particular should enjoy both of this british bands late 60s albums. gun were hardly the most original ensemble , but adrian gurvitz was a pretty fine guitar player in his own right, if not quite at the genius level of the aforementioned influences. the first albums highlights include "yellow cab man", "race with the devil"( a u.k. hit) , it won't be long( heartbeat),'sunshine' , a corny , but somehow good track verging on flower power, rat race , a heavily orchestrated number, and the 11 minute 'freak out' number take off which begins with a countdown from various languages. drummer louis farrell and adrian's bass / vocals brother, paul, provide great contributions to this recording. one would have probably said that they were a young band headed for better things. gun also performed ballads and gurvitz is also notable on both lps for some fine flamenco guitar , they weren't just a cream-esque', psychedelic proto- metal power trio . the 2nd lp gunsight isnt as strong but 'head in the clouds', 'drown yourself in the river'( with great, addictive delta blues guitar playing), the very heavy 'dreams and screams' and the soft almost cocktail lounge ballad ' angeline' are all high points of the disc. it's too bad that like so many other groups of the era they remain unheard and underappreciated .

5 out of 5 stars A Band of Brothers and the Birth of the Power Trio.......2006-07-09

This second effort from the Gurvitz brothers shines. The opening track, Head In The Clouds, stuck me at the time to be one of the most effective uses of stereo recording - try it with headphones. Angeline was the song I listened to the most - a Stairway To Heaven type construction with a ripping break. This Repertoire release also contains two non-LP singles, Don't Look Back and Runnin Wild, both evidence that the band was working on refining its style, mixing power trio riffing with tight radio friendly tracks. They perfected this with their next band, Three Man Army. Get Three Man Army's Soldiers of Rock anthology. Although nothing on this CD quite hits the originality and power of Race With The Devil from their debut LP, Gun remain one of the most original power trios to emerge.

Before Gun, there was the Knack & Londoners, more pop & mod than power and gives you some insight into the Gurvitz boys and things to come. Look for their transitional track, Lights On The Wall, that stands up there with period classics like 14 Hour Technicolor Dream etc. Paul Gurvitz subsequently did a couple of solo LPs out but his very best, Gurvitz-Parrish remains unreleased, a great collaboration with guitarist Brian Parrish (Badger). Adrian Gurvitz, post Baker Gurvitz Army headed for LA, wrote songs for REO and Whitney Huston and put out a series of solid solo efforts, the most balanced of which remains Classic - a mix of ballads and a couple of almost Gunlike rockers with riffs that take you back to the power trio days.

This band of brothers is worth exploring further.

5 out of 5 stars go down to the river,,,,,.......2005-08-25

after reviewing the onset of british blues ,,,,, 62 -71 its a pleasant change to listen to adrian gurvitz and and other rockers of that era for the new sound , excellent riffs and heavier approach to rock, i would include wishbone ash, nazareth and three man army in that elite group,
in particular adrian , plays acoustic and hard rock ,,,, long haired wild man is a great cut, situation vacant as well ,,,, this was missed along the way but still quite innovative 30 some years past,,,,, and in reality , i think he was better than clapton in most of the early 70s stuff esp rainbow concert.....

4 out of 5 stars Heavy late-60s psychedelic rock.......2005-05-31

Before joining with Cream's Ginger Baker to form The Baker-Gurvitz Army, the Gurvitz brothers (Adrian and Paul), working under their real last name (Curtis) teamed with drummer Louis Farrell in this late-60's heavy-psych-metal band. This second (and last LP) for Epic was waxed in 1969 and mostly stripped away the string section of the debut. What's left is a roaring power-trio (not unlike Cream, actually) with Gurvitz's guitar skittering all over, around and through the heavy rhythm section. Ten original compositions include the dobro-meets-Marshall-amp blues "Drown Yourself in the River," the Flamenco-tinged "Lady Link," and the acoustic "Oh Lady You." A little known, but highly listenable artifact of 1969.

4 out of 5 stars English power trio w/psychedelic touch.......1998-12-14

This CD features the band Gun, a trio led by a vastly underrated guitarist, Adrian Curtis (real last name: Gurvitz). The music is good melodic hard rock with a touch of psychedelia. If you like guitar driven older rock, you won't be disappointed in the tasty licks on this CD. You can see how this band's sound matured and improved when they later resurfaced as Three Man Army. Enjoy!
