One of 2006's Better New Releases.......2007-01-23

If you're looking for a great album from start to finish, look no further than the Rakes' Capture/Release. One of the albums to be in constant rotation on my 06 playlist, Capture/Release is pure rock'n roll. From the ridiculous guitar riff on "22 Grand Job" to the Clash-esque chorus of "Violent," the Rakes will have you pounding off solos on the ol' air guitar and wondering why all debuts can't be this much fun.

I just listened to the cd, about five times in a row. They have some really good stuff here. The lyrics are fresh and smart, the sound is their own and infectious.

Here are some songs evaluated randomly in no particular order.
22 Grand Job repeates "22 Grand Job, in the city that's alright" over and over, a low point for me.
Strasbourg is sweet! Spy's in germany, vodka, fast rocking guitar, powerfull lyrics, I think there spies anyway... maybe revolutionaries. Have to give it more listens.
Terror! is funny and unerving.
We Are All Animals, Pub Club Sleep, and Open Book are songs that I listen to obsessively... I downloaded them months ago.
The Guilt is funny stuff, but by the end it has morphed into something else.

The personas the lead singer takes on can be funny, profound, icy, vulnerable, anxious, depressed, fun, helpless, jaded, any combination of those things, and other stuff too.

The album is about modern life. It's like the report from the street (by a really smart guy), not the view from a ivory tower. Moreover you get to spend some time in the really smart guy's life. It feels like you are *there*. Alan Donohue writes the words, and sings. They all sing actully.

I'm not going to attempt to describe the music. It's pretty clean and minimalist, I guess. I leave further description to people who are better qualified.

I like these guys about as much as Arcade Fire- don't know if that means anything, but there it is.

The Rakes are one of the best recent British bands. They blitzed into LA late last year and took the city by storm. They have brilliant songs like "Strasbourg" and "22 Grand Job." Their songs are about everyday and ordinary things. One of the best songs here is "Retreat." The remix is amazing too. There are some intense songs like "Open Book" and "The Guilt." They have some more dub reggae moments like in "Violent." The Rakes are hard to pin down. The mix all the best genres of music and create their own deal. This record has been released in England a while ago. They have conquered Europe. They are one of the bands ready to take over in America. This new American release includes the new song "All Too Human."

Ok, this is just dumb........2006-10-18

The creepy feeling and overall gloom that pervaded through Things Viral is completly lost here. The main problem being that is that the vocals are brought up too high in the mix. This was fine on Viral, but when the music isn't that interesting (It seems now that O'Malley is just hitting random chords), and Alan tries too hard to sound like Gollum (Feel me eat. Yeah, great lyrics there, pal!), it makes for a laughable mess. Perhaps I'm just not into this band as much as I used to.

Khanate some years ago was a revelation. I consider O'Malley one of the most creative musicians in the genre. His work has always set a new standard and a breed of inspiration regardless of the variety of collaborations he is involved with. Reviewing his output is like watching where the head of the snake is pointing. My only problem with Khanate so far has been a certain degree of inconsistency. Their approach of exploring the possibilities of modern doom tendencies is truly admirable in its stylistic span, but the price paid for being the pioneers is evident - some ups and some downs. C&R on the other hand is thier most coherent work to date. A solid session indeed, utilizing all the best Khanate can do from the blazing noise oppression to the quiet-before-the-storm introspection. Once you come to terms with thier sophisticated spooky vibe (especially lyrics-wise) prepare for a very special bizzare club experience. The scary surprise factor of thier previous work gives way to a more concentrated meditative note. That's evolution. Pleased to see that, cos "scared" too much turns into "bored" as you get older...

if you don't know khanate, just think of oxbow drowned in a bathtub of robitussin, stood up, and forcefed downers. but you probably wouldnt know who oxbow was.

Disappointing!.......2005-09-01

After the behemoth Things Viral, this album/EP (or as O'Malley would refer to it, single) seems terribly underdeveloped for the band who put together my all-time favorite doom release several years ago. This is undeniably a Khanate album, but the open, three-dimensional production of Things Viral is no longer present -- and unfortunately, in a genre of music such as this, production is key. The production on Capture and Release feels very flat. For those who preferred the presence of Khanate's s/t album, this disc is certainly a far more up-close, uncomfortable listen, but the transient dynamics of the last disc are absent altogether.

Dubin's vocals are fairly strong, but not nearly as captivating as before.

On the plus side, I feel Release is a far more satisfying than the opener, Capture, but it falls quite short of anything on the near-perfect Things Viral. Still a good listen, but very disappointing in light of what this group has done in years past.

Everyone in music is an amalgam of their influences. For the Rakes, this means they're a lot like a meeting where Wire and Gang of Four get together and play melodies that less are less astringent and angular and more, well, melodic. Luckily, they exceed the shadows of the past exuberantly. It's tight art-punk, tense and a little furious. Then, though, the backing vocals on "Open Book," bending "aws" and "ohs," are just fantastic, measured pop set against minimal guitar jangles that propel the song effortlessly and simply. Elsewhere, on "Binary Love" for example, there's an insistent, classic vocal choppines that's so 1977-78 - with choked guitar tones that fully jar the memory. "Violent" is a perfect past-and-present brew, with dub bass lines and old school guitar riffs that ultimately burst into a completely "now" throwdown, shaking off the obvious Entertainment-era Dave Allen nod. So these guys don't just genuflect to forbears: They know enough to mete out pop hooks and singable choruses and not just blast "12XU." Would that be such a bad thing, though? --Andrew Bartlett

I just found this band by accident. I can say that is worth every cent. Most of the songs sound 80-British music. I highly recommend Work, Work, Work, Retreat and 22 Grand Job. Great album.

This album is a riotous and &*%#ing brilliant rock trip from start to finish. These blokes make rock cool again! Remember when The Strokes did it? YA, it's like THAT!

Another Import Worth Importing (4.5 stars).......2005-11-15

I'll make this quick. if you like the Bloc Party record - you'll like the Rakes. The Rakes have more in common with early punk than say, Franz Ferdinand, but the true calling is the current climate of post punk freshness that seems to be sweeping the BBC airwaves. A bit tidier than The Others, less polished than Maximo Park, The Rakes find a nice home with their smooth, yet crunchy, punk-dance-rock.

Everyone talks about how this is a good record with 4 great singles on it, and little else. I couldn't disagree more. Personally, I find the song Binary Love one of the best, non-singles of the year. The 4 singles to date (Retreat, Strausborg, Work Work Work, 22 Grand Job) are truely great and really bring up a record that basically doesn't have a weak moment on it. So if you park your car in the Garage next to the Kaiser Chiefs and Maximo Park, enjoy the ride the Rakes will give you.

stop the comparisons already..........2005-11-12

Yes, there are a lot of British bands that have come about as of late that have many of the same influences. Every generation of bands has its influences and they all borrow from those influences. So what... The Rakes are a great band. I don't care what their influences are and I can guarantee they are not sitting around thinking about who they want to sound like. They write songs and good ones at that.

I think that this album is one of the best albums of this year. It took forever for it to come out here in the US but thankfully the band streamed it on their website. I bought the album through Napster 3 or 4 months before it came out in the US and was glad I did. Being of a typical working class upbringing this album speaks volumes to me. Lyrically, I find myself saying "Yeah, that's how I feel..." as I sing along to the tunes. The guitar playing is great - thoughtful, sparse and right on. The driving simplicity of the bass lines has caused me to take out my bass and pluck along. The drumming is also top notch. Many times I have plugged the headphones into the ipod and played my drums along with the album. Seriously, these guys will only get better. I can't wait until they release new material.

I had the opportunity to see The Rakes live at the Troubadour in LA as they opened for some silly indie band. I have not been to a gig with that much energy coming from a band in a long time. Their set was tight - too bad the vast majority of the audience had no idea who they were... They were able to convert a lot of people by the end of their set though.

Yep... the songs are short and the album is short. So what... My life is not an epic. These guys write about normal people living normal lives. Save the epics for the progressive rock folks. The Rakes deliver a great song, period...
